"Pope Francis' visit" stamp on FDC from Bulgaria

For his 28th apostolic journey, Pope Francis visited Bulgaria and North Macedonia from 5 to 7 May 2019, under the sign of the ecumenical and interreligious meeting.
17 years after John Paul II, the first pope to visit Bulgaria, Pope Francis landed in Sofia on May 5, 2019 for two days of visit in this Eastern European country where Catholics represent less than 1% of the population (80% of Bulgarians are Orthodox).
In particular, Pope Francis visited the predominantly Catholic city of Rakovski, 160 kilometers south-east of Sofia, where the Sacred Heart Church is considered as the second largest in the Balkans, after the Cathedral of Zagreb.

On May 3, 2019, the Bulgarian Post issued a special stamp (2 leva, print run: 16,500) designed by Petar Chuchuligov, dedicated to this visit of Pope Francis to Bulgaria.
That stamp was printed in a sheetlet consisting of 3 stamps + 1 label such as the one on the First Day cover above, sent by registered mail on May 9, 2019 from Sofia. Thank you very much Borislav!
This label represents a globe with the Bulgarian flag, supported by two hands, with the mention "Pacem in Terris" ("Peace on Earth") in Latin.
I love the First Day cancellation from Sofia, fish-shaped (Ichthus), one of the major symbols used by early Christians as a sign of recognition, an acronym for Jesus Christ in Greek.
To note on this envelope the mark "Таxe perçue" in French and the associated value (4.30 leva) in order to reach the tariff in force (6.30 leva) for a priority registered shipment up to 20g to France.
The North Macedonia Post has also issued a stamp about the visit of Pope Francis to this country.

Tribute to great Korean scientists - Science in Korea (5th part)

Merci beaucoup Ji-Ho !
After 4 previous series (3 stamps issued each time) issued in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, the Korean Post has put into circulation, on April 19, 2019, a fifth series (3 stamps also) devoted to the theme of "Science in Korea".
Three scientists from different periods of the country's history, Yi Soon-ji, Choi Seok-jeong and Ahn Dong-hyuk are in the spotlight this year, all inductees of the Korea Science and Technology Hall of Fame, three "distinguished scientists and engineers who brought honor to Korea"...
I was lucky enough to receive the two First Day covers below regarding this series, with postmarks from Nambusan. Thank you very much Ji-Ho!

These 3 stamps (330 won, print run: 234,000 each) were printed by Cartor Security Printing in a unique sheet of 18 stamps (6 of each).
Designed by Shin, Jae-yong, these stamps include, as for previous series, some pictograms (printed with a blue metallic ink) referring to the works of these scientists, also featured on the postmark.
Yi Soon-ji (1406-1465) was an astronomer who raised the level of astronomy from the Joseon period to world standards, especially with his book "Cheonmunyucho". Yi participated in the creation of the astronomical calendar system directed by King Sejong the Great and published the Chiljeongsan Naepion and Chiljeongsan Oepion, astronomical calendars that were reorganized according to the extensive research of Chinese and Islamic calendars. With Jang Yeong-sil and Yi Cheon, he also participated in the invention of many astronomical instruments.
Choi Seok-jeong (1646-1715) was a top government official and mathematician of the Joseon period, who invented the wold's first magic square. He wrote a mathematical book entitled "Gusuryak" (1700) that summarizes the mathematical theories of China and Joseon on the basis of the oriental theory of dynamics, applying the philosophical ideas set out in the Chinese book "Yi Jing" (Classic of Changes).
In this book, Choi used the orthogonal Latin squares of the order 9 to construct a magic square, several decades before the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler, considered as the main contributor to the invention of combinatorial mathematics ...

Ahn Dong-hyuk (1907-2004) is a chemical engineer who laid the foundation for Korea's industrial development immediately after liberation. During the Japanese colonial period, he worked as a researcher at the Central Research Laboratory where he had studied water for industrial purposes at the national level.
After the liberation, he served as the director of the National Industry Research Laboratory under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. He became Minister of Trade and Industry in 1953 and pursued the "3F" policy to lay the foundations for industrialization in the 1960s.
"3F" refers to "Force & Fuel, Fertilizer, and Fund" which are necessary for operating industrial facilities and increasing agricultural productivity.

Ji-Ho was also kind enough to send me the 3 maxicards above regarding these 3 stamps.

EUROPA 2019 (National birds) stamp set on cover from Switzerland

Thank you very much Jürgen for this nice letter, sent on May 2, 2019 (the first day of issue!) from Geneva (post office "Filiale 1200 Genève 21 Les Pâquis"), stamped with the EUROPA 2019 set (2 stamps) devoted this year to the theme of national birds!
These 2 stamps (CHF 1.00 each), designed by Claude Luethi, were printed by Gutenberg AG in Liechtenstein, in a unique sheet of 16 stamps (8 of each) with in particular the names of the birds featured on this series (in German, French, Italian and English) in the lower margin.
This is the case for the two se-tenant stamps used on this letter, illustrating a golden eagle and a sanderling in flight.
The EUROPA logo on these stamps was correct last year but again non-compliant on this 2019 series (inadequate font for the letter R)!

Switzerland does not have any official national bird although the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is one of the majestic emblems of the Alpine region, representing 61% of the territory.
Between 350 and 400 breeding pairs have been recorded in the country, with its distribution area included on a map of Switzerland (silver ink), at the bottom right on the stamp.
This bird has also been chosen to be featured on EUROPA 2019 stamps issued in Moldova, Liechtenstein, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republika Srpska) and Romania.
The other stamp depicts a sanderling (Calidris alba), a small, lesser-known migratory bird, native to the Arctic tundra, observed around Swiss lakes (mainly in the northern part of Switzerland, see also the map on the stamp) during its migration to southern Europe and Africa, between the months of April and June.
Lastly, about half (25) of the countries or territories issuing EUROPA stamps this year, including Switzerland, are participating in the "Europa Bird Stamps 2019" project consisting in scanning the stamps (via a free CEE-Application) to listen to the birds singing.

Joint souvenir sheet with Israel "Birds & Flowers" on FDC from Singapore

On May 8, 2019, the Singapore Post officially unveiled, in the presence of Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and the Ambassador of the State of Israel in Singapore, Simona Halperin, the two stamps jointly issued with the Post of Israel to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The two countries enjoy good relations today, particularly in the fields of economy and defense, which has not always been the case in the past, as Singapore is located in a geo-political environment dominated by Malaysia and Indonesia, both supporting the Palestinian cause.
The two stamps of this joint issue show flowers and birds from both countries, symbolizing the common values and friendship between the two young nations.

The Singapore Post has issued these 2 stamps each in a sheet of 10 stamps as well as in the souvenir sheet present on the very elegant official FDC above. Thank you very much Terence!
These two stamps have been designed by Agnes Tan for Singapore and Tuvia Kurtz / Osnat Eshel for Israel.
The stamp devoted to Singapore depicts flowers commonly found in Singapore's streets and parks, including the orchid Dendrobium crumenatum, bougainvillea and Jarum-jarum (Ixora congesta). This design is a nod to Singapore's unique reputation as a garden city.
A bird, the crimson sunbird (Aethopyga siparaja), the (unofficial) national bird of Singapore, is also present on this stamp, facing a hoopoe (Upupa epops), the national bird of Israel.
These two birds are also featured on the other stamp, with various common flowers in Israel, including anemone, cyclamen, senecio and narcissus.
According to the Singapore Post, these stamps "reflect the diversity of each country and their ability to flourish internationally despite their small sizes, as embodied by these two birds".

"Poisonous Mushrooms" stamp set on FDC from Kyrgyzstan (KEP)

After a "Edible mushrooms" series (4 stamps) in 2017, the Kyrgyz Express Post (KEP), the 2nd designated postal operator (the other one being the Kyrgyz Post) of Kyrgyzstan, dedicated its 2nd issue of the year (4 stamps issued on March 14, 2019) to different species of poisonous mushrooms, rather common in the country.
This series was designed in collaboration with scientists from the Institute of Biology and Soil Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, in particular the Laboratory of Mycology and Phytopathology.
As for the 2017 series, KEP wanted to remind us through this new issue that mushrooms (edible or not), requiring constant protection, are a very important part of our ecosystem.

I'm very happy to have received this very nice official FDC above (print run: 200, selling price: 435 KGS, design: Oleg Cojocari), with cancellations from Bishkek, about this complete series!
The 4 species of mushrooms in the spotlight in this series (print run: 7,000 for each stamp): Ivory Funnel (50 KGS, Clitocybe dealbata), Yellow-staining mushroom (75 KGS, Agaricus xanthodermus), Sulfur Tuft (100 KGS, Hypholoma fasciculare) and Deadly Dapperling (150 KGS, Lepiota brunneoincarnata).
These 4 species contain toxic substances at different levels, such as muscarine (which can lead to severe forms of poisoning), amatoxins, cyanide or nitriles.
Unless I am mistaken, a death cap (Amanita phalloides) is featured to the left on this envelope.

The Kyrgyz Express Post has also put into circulation the four maxicards above (print run: 200 each) regarding respectively the four stamps in this series, with the FDC cancellation.
These four cards (selling price of the lot : 495 KGS), numbered from MC-40 to MC-43, were designed from original drawings by Oleg Cojocari.

These 4 stamps have also been put into circulation in the nice souvenir sheet above (print run : 2,000 souvenir sheets), with the mention "Poisonous Mushrooms of Kyrgyzstan" in the margins, in English as well as in Kyrgyz and Russian (the two official languages of the country).

EUROPA 2019 (National birds) stamp on FDC from Czech Republic

On April 24, 2019, the Czech Post issued a unique EUROPA stamp (as usual) devoted this year to the theme of "National birds" ("Národní ptáci" in Czech), to the common kingfisher in particular.
This stamp (permanent tariff "E" for a priority shipment up to 50g in Europe - 39 CZK), designed by Libuše and Jaromír Knotek, is present on the nice official FDC below (print run: 3200) with postmarks from Prague. Thank you very much Bret!
This stamp shows a combined view of a winter landscape with two common kingfishers in the foreground.

The common kingfishers (Alcedo atthis) are brightly colored birds, with a turquoise blue head and wings and an orange belly, a brown and white band extending from the long dark bill to the back of the head.
Common kingfishers, weighing about 40g and measuring between 15 and 17 cm, live not only in Europe, but also in South Asia and North Africa.
Common kingfishers often have a solitary life spent mainly on the banks of streams with calm and clear waters, where they are protected from the wind and can catch fish (this bird needs to eat its body weight in fish each day).
This species is threatened by the destruction of wetlands and pollution of surface waters.
This bird was also featured on one of the EUROPA 2019 stamps issued by Jersey and was already depicted on one of the Czech stamps of the souvenir sheet "Trebonko Biosphere Reserve" issued in 2008.

Bret was kind enough to also send me the sheetlet of 6 stamps above in which that stamp was printed.
To note this small part in the center of the bottom margin, consisting of a hologram in order to limit the illegal reproduction of this sheetlet.

Sepac 2018 (Spectacular Views) stamp on cover from Guernsey

As a reminder, the Small European Postal Administration Cooperation (SEPAC) is an association of small European postal administrations, created in 1999, in order to discuss various philatelic and postal issues specific to these small structures.
Since 2007 (theme : landscapes), stamps having a common theme are issued by some members and an election of the most beautiful Sepac stamp has been organized for the first time in 2010.
The Post of Guernsey has participated in these Sepac stamp issues since 2007 and put into circulation, on August 1, 2018, its 9th Sepac stamp, whose theme this year was devoted to spectacular views (local handcrafts in 2017).
This stamp (76p), designed by Mark Totty, including the Sepac logo, was used (to the right) to stamp the letter below, sent from Guernsey on April 1, 2019.

This stamp is part of a series of 6 stamps (each printed by Cartor Security Printing in a sheetlet of 10 stamps) devoted to aerial views of different parts of this Anglo-Norman island.
Elliott Cockett, a young photographer based in Guernsey, known as "The Drone Ranger", captured these views from a drone.
The "Sepac" stamp above shows a view of the St Saviour's Reservoir, located in western Guernsey, which supplies drinking water to the entire island. The construction of this reservoir in the St Saviour's valley was decided in 1936, the work began in 1938 and was interrupted during the 2nd World War. The dam was sealed in January 1947, and by April, the reservoir was full to overflowing.
The other stamp above (63p), issued in the same series, shows a view of the Church of the Torteval parish (southwestern tip of the island).
The bell tower of this church built in 1818 is peculiar, consisting of a crenellated tower surmounted by a spire, the highest on the island, which makes it a remarkable sea mark.

"Science Day" (or "Knowledge Day" ?) souvenir sheet on FDC from Algeria

Merci beaucoup Zine !
Established in 1976, the Knowledge Day is celebrated every year in Algeria on April 16th to "celebrate the memory of the great Ulemas who have contributed significantly to the dissemination of knowledge, and thus to the prosperity and progress of the homeland".
April 16th coincides with the death on April 16, 1940, of Sheikh Abdelhamid Ben Badis (born in 1889), an emblematic figure of the Muslim reform movement in Algeria and founder of the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulemas.
Through his books or teachings, he helped to popularize the concepts of nationalism, Arabism and fidelity to Islam.
Sheikh Abdelhamid Ben Badis is represented on the right on the souvenir sheet (50 dinars, design: Ali Mechta) present on this First Day cover of April 16, 2019 sent from Jijel. Thank you very much Zine!

This souvenir sheet is special since it is not perforated and includes the English mention "Science Day" rather than "Knowledge Day" ...
Algerian humanist thinker, Malek Bennabi (1905-1973), whose portrait is also on the right on this sheet, produced a prolific work often marked by French colonial rule. Promoter of the revival of the Muslim civilization, he conceptualized the principle of "colonizability", endogenous cause of the colonization according to him.
To note that Malek Bennabi was already featured on a stamp of a series (Algerian writers) issued in 2008.
Sheikh Abdelkrim El Maghili (1425-1504), in the middle on this sheet, was an Algerian scholar and reformer who lived at the end of the Zianid kingdom era and played a major role in spreading Islam and in the fight against the Jews ...
Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430), Christian philosopher and theologian with Berber origins and Lucius Apuleius (125-170), Platonist writer, speaker and philosopher known for his masterpiece "Metamorphoses", are finally present to the left on this souvenir sheet.

EUROPA 2019 (National birds) stamp on cover from Slovakia

The Slovak Post has put into circulation, on May 3, 2019, a very nice EUROPA stamp illustrating this year the theme of "national birds" (the eagle seems to be considered as the national bird in Slovakia), transformed into "rare birds" through this European roller (Coracias garrulus), wings spread.
Designed by Rudolf Cigánik, this stamp (€ 1.70, print run: 200,000), printed in a sheetlet of 8 stamps, was used on the letter below sent on the first day of issue from Bratislava. Thank you very much Milos!
To note that this stamp was also issued in a booklet (print run: 15,000) consisting of 6 self-adhesive stamps.

The choice of this European roller is not a coincidence in Slovakia since it is at the heart of the book "Zbojnícka mladosť" ("Outlaw's youth") and the character of Jerguš Lapin, by the poet and writer Ľudo Ondrejov (1901-1962).
The European roller, with its turquoise colors and the size of a turtle dove, is the only representative of its species (Coraciidae) in Europe.
Its presence in Europe where it breeds began to decline in the 1950s, the last breeding pair hatching their chicks in Slovakia having been observed near Komárno in 2010 ...
The causes for this decrease include persecution, a lack of food, but mainly the removal and disposal of old trees with hollows and intense large-scale agriculture.

Joint stamp issue with Thailand, Mandela and Year of the Pig on cover from Vietnam

A big thank you Pierre for this nice letter sent on April 12, 2019 from the city of Đồng Hới located in the center of Vietnam, on the edge of the South China Sea!
The stamp on the left (10500 dongs) is part of a joint series (2 stamps) with Thailand, issued on August 5, 2016 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
This joint set is devoted to the theme of traditional puppetry of Vietnam and Thailand, especially the folk puppet theater Hun Krabok (puppets made from bamboo sticks), initiated at the end of the 19th century in Thailand during the reign of King Rama V.

This Hun Krabok theater often evokes the Ramakian, the Thai national epic (initiated under the reign of King Rama I), a variant of the Indian epic of Ramayana.
The stamp in the center above (4000 dongs) was issued on December 5, 2018 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of "Madiba", Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), probably the most prominent political figure of the last century in the world, freedom fighter, reconciler and model for several generations of South Africans.
Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1993 for jointly and peacefully ending the apartheid regime and laying the foundation for a new democratic South Africa, Nelson Mandela was elected in 1994 as the first black president of South Africa.
The last stamp above (15000 dongs) is part of a series (2 stamps) issued on December 1, 2018, devoted to the Year of the Earth Pig (from February 5, 2019 to January 24, 2020).

A big thank you Nicolae for sending this card with its associated First Day cancellation from Chişinău (MD-2012)!

This orthodox church with a very simple and sober style (Neoclassical and Baroque) was originally built (in only 6 months) by and for the Bulgarian community, who then came to take refuge in this region following persecutions of the Ottoman troops.
An exterior view of this church (beginning of construction on May 2, 1819, ending on November 3, 1819) with a unique architecture in Moldova, is shown on the pre-printed stamp, the left side of this card showing a part of the inside of the building.
Nicolae completed his postage to reach the current rate for a priority shipment up to 20g to France (11 L) with two other stamps above.
The 7.75-ruble stamp (then 7.75 L since February 1, 2006) is part of a series of 4 stamps issued on July 20, 1992, representing the same supersonic aircraft, with different colors.
The other stamp (2 L) is part of a series (4 stamps) issued on December 29, 2004, devoted to different shrub flowers, small-flowered Black Hawthorn (Crataegus pentagyna) flowers here

Another view of the main facade of this church is featured on the other side of this card above, with, at the top left, one of the many icons (Saint George) present inside this religious building.

EUROPA 2019 (National birds) stamp on FDCs from Germany

On May 2, 2019, the Deutsche Post has put into circulation a very nice EUROPA stamp illustrating the theme of "national birds" chosen by PostEurop this year.
On the occasion of the 29th edition of the international philatelic exhibition ("Internationale Briefmarken-Messe") held in Essen from 9 to 11 May 2019, a special prepaid envelope ("Messebriefumschlag", selling price: € 0.90) was edited, with the visual of this pre-printed EUROPA stamp.
To note that, as in previous years, this stamp was curiously issued at the domestic rate (€ 0.70 for a standard shipment up to 20g).
A big thank you to Jens for sending this special envelope with cancellation from this stamp exhibition in Essen dated May 9, 2019 (Europe Day) including the mention "Presentation of the EUROPA stamp")!

This stamp contains the words "Heimische Vögel" ("Local Birds") and represents a couple of yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella), as in the illustration on the left on the envelope.
Through this issue, the German Post wanted to remind us that even these singing passerines, formerly common in our countryside in Europe, are today threatened and in decline.
This stamp was created by the design agency "nexd" (Düsseldorf) from an illustration of the book "Birds of Europe" (1837) by the famous British ornithologist and naturalist John Gould (1804-1881).
To reach the current rate for a shipment in Europe (€ 0.90), Jens also used one of the stamps of the definitive series "flowers" in progress (started in 2005), "Hyacinthoides non-scripta" blue flowers (€ 0.20, issued on June 8, 2017) here.

Jens was kind enough to also send me the letter above, including this EUROPA stamp, with First Day postmark of May 2, 2019 from Berlin!
In Germany, this bird is known for its song sometimes similar to the phrase "Wie, wie, wie hab ich Dich lieb!" ("How, how, how do I love you!")!
Lastly, about half (25) of the countries or territories issuing EUROPA stamps this year, including Germany, are participating in the "Europa Bird Stamps 2019" project consisting in scanning the stamps (via a free CEE-Application) to listen to the birds singing.

"Sir Walter Raleigh, Governor" stamps on cover from Jersey

On February 5, 2019, the Jersey Post put into circulation an interesting series (6 stamps + 1 miniature sheet) devoted to Sir Walter Raleigh (1552 or 1554-1618), an English writer, poet, courtier and explorer.
This series, created by the design studio "True North" and printed in the Netherlands by Joh. Enschedé Security Print, recalls that Sir Walter Raleigh was also Governor of Jersey between 1600 and 1603.
Two stamps of this series were used on the letter below sent in April 2019 (date not readable) since the slogan to the left on this mechanical cancellation evokes the "Bowel Cancer Awareness Month", organized every year in April in the United Kingdom. Thank you very much François!

The different stamps in this series illustrate Raleigh's varied career and in particular the positive impacts of his (short) governorship on the island of Jersey.
A prominent figure in the Elizabethan era, Sir Walter Raleigh was Governor of Jersey from 1600 to 1603 and appears to have been a governor "on the ground", improving the island's militia and defenses, encouraging trade and attending sittings of the court.
The construction of Elizabeth Castle in St Aubin Bay, in the south of the island, started in 1594 and it was named after Queen Elizabeth I, using the Latin words "Fort Isabella Bellissima" ("Elizabeth the most beautiful").
The stamp above on the right (50p) evokes this mention in Latin.
Raleigh also saved from destruction the iconic Mont Orgueil, located on the east coast of Jersey.
The other stamp above (65p) shows a hand writing the words "Soldier, sailor, author, poet and adventurer" characterizing Raleigh.
Under King James I, he lost all his credit and was accused of taking part in a conspiracy against the king, was thrown into a prison for 12 years and was sentenced to death and executed in 1618.

"Six postcards" exhibition and EUROPA 2008 stamp in Czech Republic

From April 3 to July 7, 2019, the Prague Postal Museum is organizing a new exhibition entitled "Šest pohlednic" ("Six Postcards"), dedicated to Czech artist, photographer, filmmaker and lecturer Jolana Havelková (born in 1966).
Through this exhibition, her work is represented by only one and at the same time, many postcards, which have lost their original meaning so that the author becomes a stimulus, an inspiration, an orientation and a basis for the emergence of new artifacts ...
Jolana Havelková had begun a spontaneous action at the beginning, handing her own "useless" postcards to the passers-by in a square of Kolín then became over the years a unique artistic achievement of an unexpected magnitude.
This exhibition lists all the answers of friends, artists and neighbors to six of the same black and white postcards received since the beginning of the event, 24 years ago ...

On the occasion of this exhibition, the Czech Post put into circulation in Prague, on April 6, 2019, a special postmark (design: Beata Šafková), including a black and white composition of these 6 postcards and the title of this manifestation.
This postmark was applied on the nice letter above, franked in particular with two copies of the EUROPA stamp (17 CZK) issued on May 7, 2008, illustrating that year the theme of the letter. Thank you very much Slavek!
The Czech Post had chosen, with this excerpt from a handwritten letter ("My love! I miss you, and therefore I am writing this letter... The time flows slowly and I...") by writer Božena Němcová (1820-1862), to remind us that a letter written by hand was the expression of a special attention for the one who receives it, in the era of SMS or other impersonal emails ...
Božena Němcová gave Czech literature her fundamental book "Babička" ("Grandmother"), at the crossroads of romanticism and realism, published in 1853 and inspired by her own childhood.

The postal stationary above (unknown print run, permanent rate "E" for a shipment in Europe up to 50g - 39 CZK currently) was also put into circulation on the occasion of this "Šest pohlednic" exhibition. Thanks again Slavek for sending it, with this same cancellation!
The left side of this postal stationary represents a joint work (a collage) by Jolana Havelková and Luboš Plný (born in 1961), a czech painter and conceptual artist, known for his works related to the art brut.

"Lascaux Cave - Dordogne" stamp on FDC from France

Nearly 50 years after a first stamp (issued in 1968), the French Post has put into circulation, on April 29, 2019 (general sale), a stamp again devoted to the Lascaux Cave, located in the town of Montignac (Dordogne, southwestern France), considered as one of the most important decorated caves of the Paleolithic period, by the number and the aesthetic quality of its paintings and carvings (old from 18000 to 17000 years).
This splendid stamp (€ 0.88, print run: 700,050), designed and engraved by Elsa Catelin, represents in particular one of the great bulls of the Rotunda (Hall of the Bulls) followed by a horse.
This stamp is present on the First Day cover below, with cancellation from Paris of April 26, 2019, depicting the bull normally facing the other one on the stamp. Thank you very much Joël!

The preview sale of that stamp also took place on April 26 and 27, 2019 in Montignac, on the site of "Lascaux 4", the international center of the parietal art presenting an integral facsimile of all the decorated parts of this Lascaux Cave, inaugurated in December 2016.
Discovered in 1940, this cave was indeed closed to the public in 1963 following various degradations (molds, stains ...) related to the human presence in this closed space.
Joël had the good idea to illustrate this envelope with the stamp issued in 1968, representing another fresco of this Lascaux Cave, showing a part of the cows of the Axial Gallery.

The Lascaux Cave, sometimes nicknamed the "Sistine Chapel of the parietal art", is one of 15 prehistoric sites and decorated caves of the Vézère Valley, inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
The same day, the French Post has put into circulation a "philatelic souvenir" (print run: 30,000, sale price: € 4.00) including the engraved leaflet above, with the same stamp on the top left.
This leaflet represents one of the four groups of figures of the Nave, with in particular this impressive "Great black cow".

EUROPA 2013 (postman's van) souvenir sheet on cover from Guernsey

The EUROPA theme of postal vehicles, symbols of mail delivery in cities and the countryside, was chosen specifically in 2013 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the association of European postal operators PostEurop which manages the issue of these EUROPA stamps.
The two EUROPA stamps issued on May 8, 2013 by the Guernsey Post, are part of a series of 6 stamps, designed by the British illustrator Robin Carter, printed (in France by Cartor Security Printing) also in the form of a souvenir sheet.
This series represents different postal vehicles, more or less old, operated in Guernsey but also in five other countries.
This souvenir sheet, including a margin on the right depicting a recent vehicle (Fiat) bearing the logo of the Guernsey Post, was used on the letter below sent on April 1, 2019.

The two stamps in the center of this souvenir sheet, bearing the EUROPA logo, respectively represent a "Morris 6cwt O" vehicle of the British Royal Mail ("UK Letter" rate - 65p) with a Lake District landscape in the background, and a VW (Beetle) vehicle of the Deutsche Post ("International Letter 20g" rate - 90p) with apparently, a village of Bavaria in the background.
The two stamps at the top feature a postal vehicle of the Diahatsu brand ("Domestic Letter" rate - 48p) operated in Guernsey, in a street of St-Peter-Port (with the bell tower of St John's Church in the background) and a Citroën 2CV vehicle of the French Post ("Domestic Large Letter" rate - 66p) in a Paris street, in the Tuileries district.
The last two stamps above represent a DAF Kalmar Tjorven vehicle ("UK Large Letter" rate - 98p) operated by the Swedish Post Posten AB (replaced by PostNord in 2009) on Stortorget Square in Stockholm, and a Studebaker Zip van of the USPS ("International Letter 40g" rate) in a non-identifiable American city ...
To note that this "International Letter 40g" rate no longer exists in Guernsey but only the "Letter Europe 20g to 100g" and "Letter World 20g to 100g" rates.
