"50 years of first moon landing" stamp set on cover from Liechtenstein

Merci beaucoup Jens !
Like many other postal administrations (Australia, Moldova, France, Faroe Islands, USA, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Sweden, Gibraltar, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, North Macedonia, Brazil, Niue, Monaco, Kyrgyzstan (KEP), Tokelau, Canada, New Zealand, Austria ...), the Post of the Principality of Liechtenstein put into circulation, on June 3, 2019, a series (2 stamps) dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

These two stamps were each printed in a sheetlet of 8 stamps by Gutenberg AG in Schaan from where this beautiful letter was sent on June 3, 2019. Many thanks Jens!

This letter is franked with the two stamps of this "50 years of the first moon landing" stamp set, respectively representing an astronaut (CHF 1.80) and the lunar module LEM (CHF 2.00) used in the context of the American Apollo space program (between 1961 and 1972) to land men on the Moon.
On July 21, 1969, for the first time in the history of humanity, two American astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, walked on the moon.
Five days earlier, as part of the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins took off aboard a Saturn V rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, entering lunar orbit on July 19, 1969.
After a stay of barely 22 hours, the lunar module took off from the surface of the Moon to return to the mother ship. In total, twelve astronauts (all Americans) walked on the Moon, the last time in 1972 ... The next one will be a Chinese astronaut it seems.

"Red Book - Threatened wildlife" stamp set on cover from Mongolia

Thank you very much Tristan for this nice letter sent on April 21, 2019 from Mongolia, stamped with the series (4 stamps) issued on May 16, 2014 dedicated to the Red Book of Mongolia, especially to two threatened species of birds and 2 species of mammals.
To note this red TAD with the mention "Mongol Post" in Mongolian ("Монгол Шуудан") as well as the initials of Ulaanbaatar (Уб), the capital of the country.
This Red Book of Mongolia lists 30 species of mammals, 30 species of birds, 5 species of reptiles, 4 species of amphibians, 6 species of fish, 19 insects, 2 crustaceans and 4 species of molluscs, as endangered, vulnerable or rare.
The main threats to Mongolian wildlife are illegal hunting, climate change, prairie (steppe) and forest fire, harsh winter and drought.

A marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna), a species considered vulnerable by IUCN due to the destruction of its habitat, living in the semi-desert to desert areas and the steppes of central Eurasia, is featured on the stamp at the top right (500 ₮).
This animal also appeared on a stamp of the series "Red Book of Kyrgyzstan" issued on December 7, 2018 by the Kyrgyz Express Post.
The stamp on the bottom right (200 ₮) represents curiously an Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus), a species living only in the south of Spain and Portugal!
I suppose that this stamp should have rather depicted an Eurasian lynx or a Turkestan lynx, one of its subspecies ...
The other two stamps in this series are devoted to the Common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus - 400 ₮) and to the Henderson's ground jay (Podoces hendersoni).
Finally to note the presence on these four stamps of the Soyombo, an old Mongol symbol representing, from top to bottom, fire, earth, water, sun, moon and yin-yang (a star symbolizing communism was removed in 1992), present on the flag and coat of arms of the country. This symbol was added on the Mongolian stamps in 1997.

EUROPA 2019 (National birds) stamp set on cover from Ukraine

A big thank you Roman for this nice letter sent from Lviv on June 1, 2019, stamped with the splendid EUROPA series, issued on May 22, 2019, dedicated this year to the theme of the national birds.
These two stamps (tariff "Z" - UAH 13.20), designed by Natalia Kokhal, are dedicated respectively to the thrush nightingale and the white stork, considered as the Ukrainian national bird (also in Lithuania, Poland and Belarus) without any official status.
These two stamps (print run: 130,000 each) were printed in a sheetlet of 8 stamps + 1 label as well as in a booklet composed of two souvenir sheets (with these 2 smaller size stamps), printed in 12,000 copies.

Roman completed his postage with 2 identical stamps being part of the new definitive series issued from 2017 by the Ukrainian Post, dedicated to the coat of arms of towns and villages of the country, Lokachi ("D") here.
The stamp on the right represents a white stork (Ciconia ciconia) in flight, another one being in its nest in the foreground, on the background of the Ukrainian countryside (traditional house on the right).
The other stamp shows a thrush nightingale (Luscinia luscinia), whose nesting area is north and east of Europe where it replaces the common nightingale. This species, which winters in southern Africa, is known for its melodious and complex song.
The nightingale sings at night to attract females and during the day to drive away male rivals. It is thus the first bird that is known to differentiate the hours of the day when he sings according to the goal pursued!

"International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements" stamp on FDC from Kyrgyzstan (KEP)

On December 20, 2017, the United Nations General Assembly, jointly with UNESCO, proclaimed 2019, the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements ("IYPT 2019").
This "IYPT2019" aims to "recognize the importance of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements as one of the most important and influential achievements of modern science reflecting the essence not only of chemistry, but also of physics, biology and other basic science disciplines".
The year 2019 was chosen to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of this Periodic Table of Chemical Elements by the Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907), considered one of the fathers of modern chemistry.
In 1869, Mendeleev made a decisive breakthrough by predicting the properties of five chemical elements and their compounds. He also left in the periodic table the necessary place for the elements which would be discovered later (118 elements today).

Many postal administrations have issued or will issue stamps in 2019 devoted to this international year (Algeria, Portugal, Moldova, Spain ...), such as the Kyrgyz Express Post (KEP), the 2nd designated postal operator (the other one being the Kyrgyz Post) of Kyrgyzstan, with this stamp (100 KGS) put into circulation on April 12, 2019, present on the official FDC above (print run: 250) with postmarks from Bishkek.
This postmark represents the official logo of this international year, with the portrait of Mendeleev in front of a terrestrial globe which includes the element Mendelevium (Md, atomic number 101), thus named in 1955 by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) in tribute to Mendeleev. The elements Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N), Oxygen (O) and Hydrogen (H) are also present on this globe.
In the illustration on the left on this envelope, a reproduction of the first handwritten version of this "periodic system" published in 1869 by Mendeleev, very different from the current table, mentioning only 63 elements.

This stamp (print run: 5,000), designed by Daria Maier from a drawing by Dmitri Murahovschi, was printed in Moldova by "Nova Imprim" in the beautiful sheetlet (4 stamps) above, with a view of the current periodic table of chemical elements in the background.
A portrait of Mendeleev is featured on the left on this stamp, with also different chemical elements (including Mendelevium), the logo of this international year and the emblem of UNESCO.

The Kyrgyz Express Post has also put into circulation the maxicard above (print run: 200) regarding that stamp, with the FDC cancellation.
This card (selling price: 130 KGS), numbered MC-47, was designed from the original drawing by Dmitri Murahovschi.

Council of Europe's 2019 stamps on cover from France

On May 6, 2019, two new stamps (€ 1.30, print run: 300,000 each) of the Council of Europe were put into circulation in order to respectively celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe and the 60th anniversary of the creation of the European Court of Human Rights.
These two stamps, designed by Bruno Ghiringhelli (based on Louise Chevalier's graphic designs), are present on the letter below sent on May 31, 2019 from Lyon.
As a reminder, the Council of Europe has (since 1958) its own so-called "service" stamps, including the mention "France" (and printed by Phil@poste), normally used only from the headquarters of this institution in Strasbourg ...
The stamp on the left, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe, represents a composition around the number 70 with colors reminiscent of the EU flag (identical to the Council of Europe's flag).

The official logo of this 70th anniversary is discreetly present on the bottom right of that stamp, including its associated slogan "Our rights, our freedoms, our Europe".
The stamp on the right is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), a jurisdiction created in 1959 by the Council of Europe, whose mission is to ensure compliance with the commitments entered into by the signatory states of the European Convention on Human Rights. The purpose of this Convention is to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms by enabling judicial review of respect for these individual rights, with reference to the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Human Rights Building (architect: Richard Rogers) in Strasbourg, where the European Court of Human Rights has been sitting since 1998, is represented in the blue background on this stamp.
Several postal administrations have issued stamps, postal stationeries or special cancellations this year devoted to these anniversaries: Spain, Malta, Moldova, Ukraine, Monaco, San Marino, Bulgaria, Croatia ...

EUROPA 2019 (National birds) stamp set on cover from North Macedonia

Following the Prespa agreement signed on June 12, 2018 between the Macedonian Government and the Greek Government, the conflict between the two countries, in particular about the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, has been resolved and the country is officially named "Republic of North Macedonia" since February 12, 2019, after approval of the parliaments of both countries.
I'm happy to share with you this letter, franked with two stamps of the EUROPA series, issued on May 2, 2019, bearing this new mention "Republic of North Macedonia", in Macedonian, Albanian and English.
Thank you very much Jens for this nice cover sent by registered mail on May 15, 2019 from Skopje, the capital!

As in previous years, the Post of North Macedonia has put into circulation this year its EUROPA series in two stamps (printed in sheetlets of 9 stamps each, print run: 10,000 each), in a souvenir sheet (consisting of a 144 MKD stamp, print run: 7,000) and in a booklet composed of a sheet of 4 different stamps (50 MKD each, print run: 5,000 booklets), all for a nominal value of € 8.00!
As a reminder, the PostEurop's theme chosen for EUROPA stamps in 2019 is devoted to national birds.
North Macedonia does not have any official national bird and the 7 stamps of this EUROPA set are featuring different species of birds of prey such as the Montagu's harrier (Circus pygargus) and the Western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus) on the two stamps above (MKD 72 each).
A long-legged buzzard (Buteo rufinus) is featured on the souvenir sheet while four species of hawks are represented on the four stamps of the booklet.

"Albanian fauna - fish" stamp set on cover from Tirana

On December 19, 2018, the Albanian Post issued an interesting series (2 stamps) entitled "Albanian Fauna", devoted in particular to two species of fish, the European sea sturgeon and the brown trout.
Designed by Rigels Lulo, these two se-tenant stamps were used to stamp the letter below sent on May 22, 2019 from Tirana, the capital. Thank you very much Sabri!
The stamp on the right (190 lëke, print run: 54,000) represents a brown trout (Salmo trutta - "trofta" in Albanian), recorded in particular in the rivers Cijevna and Valbona, in the mountainous region of the north of the country.

The other stamp of this series (5 lëke, print run: 24,000) is devoted to the European sea sturgeon (Acipenser sturio - "blini" in Albanian), an endangered species in a large part of Europe.
I do not know its conservation status in Albania where a population of Adriatic sturgeons (Acipenser naccarii) has been recorded in Lake Skadar, located in the north-west of the country, on the border with Montenegro.

On April 1, 2019, the Guernsey Post issued a series of 6 stamps devoted to different bird species, 2 of them including the EUROPA logo (this year's theme: national birds).

The two stamps bearing the EUROPA logo were also put into circulation in a souvenir sheet, used to stamp the letter below sent from Guernsey on April 1st, 2019.

Tribute to Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King on cover from Ireland

On April 5, 2018, the Irish Post "An Post" put into circulation a series (2 se-tenant stamps) entitled "International Statesmen", dedicated in particular to the South African Nelson Mandela (100th anniversary of his birth) and to the American Martin Luther King (50th anniversary of his death), two of the most prominent civil rights advocates in the world in the 20th century.
Created by the design studio Aad (based in Dublin), these two stamps (international rate up to 100g "W" - € 1.70 currently, print run: 120,000 for each stamp) were printed in France by Cartor Security Printing in the same sheet made up of 16 stamps (8 of each).
These two stamps were used on the letter below sent on April 26, 2019 from "Tír an Iúir", the name of a district of Dublin where is located a main sorting center, the other mention" BÁC "on the postmark referring to the Gaelic name of Dublin ("Baile Átha Cliath").
These two stamps were designed from photographs of Nelson Mandela (in Soweto in September 1990) and Martin Luther King (during the March on Washington in August 1963).

Martin Luther King (1929-1968) is best known for his militant and humanitarian activities, which advanced the cause of African-American civil rights.
He remains world famous for his speech "I have a dream" pronounced in front of 250,000 demonstrators during the March on Washington in 1963.
The following year, US President Johnson signed laws prohibiting racial discrimination and Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent campaign against racism. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis.
South Africa's first black president, Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) studied law to become one of the first black lawyers of South Africa.
In the 1950s, he was elected head of the youth wing of the African National Congress (ANC) and arrested in 1962 and then sentenced to life imprisonment for high treason and conspiracy against the state.
He was released in 1990 and served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, when his government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through reconciliation.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, shared with former President Frederik Willem de Klerk.

EUROPA 2019 (National Birds) souvenir sheet on FDC from Bulgaria

Thank you very much Borislav for this very nice official FDC of April 24, 2019 (with postmark from Sofia), regarding the souvenir sheet (2 stamps) issued as part of the series EUROPA having for theme this year the national birds!
As in previous years, the Bulgarian Post has put into circulation this EUROPA set (design: Victor Paunov) in several versions: sheet consisting of 5 stamps + 1 label (print run: 3,400 sheets for each stamp), booklet of 8 stamps (4 of each with only one-side left vertical perforation, print run: 4,500 booklets), a postal stationary (concerning the 0.95 leva stamp but with a nominal value of 0.65 leva) and a souvenir sheet with the 2 stamps (prinr run: 9,500).
To note on this envelope sent by registered mail from Sofia on May 9, 2019, the mark "Таxe perçue" in French and the associated value (3.35 leva) in order to reach the tariff in force (6.30 leva) for a priority registered shipment up to 20g to France.

Like many other European countries, Bulgaria has not officially designated a national bird and has chosen to feature on this series a raptor, the lanner falcon (Falco biarmicus, 0.95 leva) and the hazel grouse (Bonasa bonasia, 2.00 leva).
The lanner falcon is a species that breeds mainly in much of eastern and southeastern Europe and has been declining since the 1960s due to increased pesticide use in the fields, destruction of nests or hunting.
This bird is on the list of protected species in the EU, as I suppose the hazel grouse whose population also decreases sharply in Europe.
It should be noted that in 2016, the European Commission has taking Bulgaria to the EU Court of Justice over its failure to protect unique habitats and important bird species in the Rila Mountains (south-west of the country), especially the hazel grouse ...
The North Macedonia Post also issued a stamp depicting a lanner falcon in its EUROPA 2019 series.

"50 years of Diplomatic Relations with the Philippines" miniature sheet on FDC from Singapore

After a joint series ("bridges") issued in 2009 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and the Philippines, the postal administrations of the two countries have again put into circulation, on May 16, 2019, a joint set (2 stamps) dedicated this time to the 50th anniversary of these relations.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries officially began on May 16, 1969 when the Consulate General of the Philippines in Singapore was elevated to the rank of embassy.
The two countries now have respective embassies and maintain good economic relations (Singapore is today the leading investor in the Philippines) but also in the field of defense, particularly within ASEAN.
In addition, about 200,000 Filipinos live in Singapore.

The theme of this new joint series is devoted to butterflies, with, for Singapore, two stamps ($ 1.30 each) printed in a sheet of 10 stamps but also in the beautiful miniature sheet present on the official FDC above. Thank you very much Terence!
To note this unusual mechanical cancellation (blue ink) applied on the top of this miniature sheet ...
The stamps issued in sheets and those issued in this miniature sheet have a different perforation.
The two butterflies in the spotlight are respectively the Common rose butterfly (Pachliopta aristolochlae), designed by Sonny Lee for the Singapore Post, and the Luzon lacewing butterfly (Cethosia luzonica), designed by Rodine C. Teodoro for the Philippine Post.
The Common rose butterfly, widespread in South and Southeast Asia, was declared a national butterfly of Singapore in 2015, while the Luzon lacewing butterfly is an endemic species of the Philippines.
These two butterflies were chosen because they have similarities in the colors and patterns of the wings.

470 years of the Zikmund bell - special postmark on cover from Czech Republic

On the eve of St. Zikmund, a Day of the Bells ("Den zvoníků") is organized every year by the Archdiocese of Prague.
This day is one of the rare occasions to hear the Zikmund bell, located in the south tower of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.
This bell Zikmund was cast in 1549 in Prague and weighs about 15 tons, making it the biggest bell in the country and one of the largest in Europe.
On April 30, 2019, the post office No. 12 located in the Prague Castle (Hrad) put into circulation a special postmark (design : Miloslav Bláha) devoted to this Day of the bells and the 470th anniversary of the Zikmund bell.

This cancellation, applied on the nice letter above, represents a religious motif (The Annunciation made to Mary by the archangel Gabriel ?) featured on that same Zikmund bell. Thank you very much Slavek!
4 to 6 people are mobilized to ring this bell and to move its imposing clapper (400 kg, 3 meters long). According to a legend, when this clapper is broken, a disaster affects the country. This was the case in 2002 and, a few months later, terrible floods hit Prague and other regions of Bohemia...
This Zikmund bell is one of the 4 bells of the Prague's cathedral, with Václav (1542), John the Baptist (1546) and Josef (1602).
Slavek franked this letter with a stamp (12 CZK), issued on June 16, 2010, dedicated to the city of Klatovy with some of its main monuments: the fortifications, the White Tower of the Gothic church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary, the Black Tower of the Renaissance town hall and the Jesuit church of the Immaculate Conception and St. Ignatius.
The other 3 identical stamps (9 CZK) are part of a series of 3 stamps, issued on September 7, 2005, also about the theme of the country's historic bells, the two bells (dating from 1561 and 1596) of the Church of St. John and St. Paul in the village of Dobrš here.

EUROPA 2019 (National Birds) stamp set on FDC from Malta

The Maltese Post has chosen this year May 9, 2019 (the Europe Day), to put into circulation its EUROPA series, whose theme chosen this year by PostEurop is dedicated to the national birds.
This set of two stamps (print run: 30,000 for each stamp) is present on the beautiful official illustrated FDC below with cancellations from the Malta Postal Museum in Valletta. Thank you very much Silvan!
These two stamps (€ 0.59 and € 2.00), designed from photographs by Joe Sultana (BirdLife Malta association), were each printed in a numbered sheet of 11 stamps + 1 label (including the EUROPA logo and the mention " National Birds").
The € 0.59 stamp was also issued in a booklet of 5 stamps + 1 label.
To illustrate this theme of the national birds, the Maltese Post has chosen to feature the blue rock thrush (called "il-Merill" in Malta).

This bird (Monticola solitarius) was chosen as a national bird of the Maltese Islands in 1970 without this having an official character. This choice was made by the International Council for Bird Preservation Malta, which had representatives of the Natural History Society, the Malta Ornithological Society and the Malta Geographical Society.
Measuring between 21 and 23 cm, this bird (the male in particular) has a vibrant blue color with darker wings and tail.
This species, known for its melodious song, lives a solitary life and is seen in Malta along the cliffs of the western and northern coast and nests in cracks along inaccessible cliffs.
For a time, the species has been threatened but now seems to be adapting to the urbanization of the Maltese Islands.
This bird has already been featured on Maltese stamps issued in 1971, 2001 and 2007 as well as on Maltese lira coins (1 lira and 20 lira).

These relations were formalized in 1919 a few months after Poland regained its independence (Second Republic), the two countries exchanging ambassadors from 1922.
After the Greek civil war and the defeat of the Communists in 1949, more than 14,000 Greeks emigrated to Poland, in Wrocław in particular.
Since Poland became a member of the EU in 2004, more than 20,000 Poles have emigrated to Greece for employment. Many of them returned to Poland after the Greek crisis of 2009.

Both countries have good relations within the EU, OECD or NATO, in the fields of defense, agriculture, economics or science.
The Polish version of this joint stamp (PLN 3.30, print run: 216,000) is present on the very nice official FDC above, with postmark from Warsaw, sent on May 11, 2019 from the city of Łosice (center-east of the country). Thank you very much Grzegorz!
Designed by Eleni Apostolou and printed in sheet of 12 stamps, this stamp represents some emblematic landmarks of the two countries, with in the background a number "100" bearing the colors of the flags of Poland and Greece.
Among these monuments, the Parthenon located on the Acropolis of Athens, the Royal Palace of Warsaw or the statue of the Warsaw Mermaid ("Syrenka Warszawska"), one of the symbols of the Polish capital, erected in 1939 on the edge of the Vistula river.

Grzegorz has also used 4 other stamps on the back of this envelope above, in particular 3 identical stamps (PLN 0.50), issued on January 20, 2016 (with 2015 vintage) being part of the nice definitive "flowers and fruits" series, blueberry flowers here.
The other stamp (PLN 0.20), issued on October 3, 2018, is devoted to the Via Carpatia, this planned transnational road built to connect Klaipėda in Lithuania to Thessaloniki in Greece, via Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

A big thank you to the Polish Post for sending this document (inside part above with a copy of the stamp, cover below) regarding this joint Poland-Greece stamp, with mentions in Polish, Greek and English!
It seems that the Polish Post (Poczta Polska S.A.) regularly publishes this kind of document, not only for joint issues ...
On the Greek side, a booklet made up of 10 self-adhesive stamps (print run: 5,000 booklets) has been put into circulation.
