Gagarin and Shepard on stamps from San Marino

Comme de nombreuses administrations postales (Moldavie, Italie, Autriche, Russie, Belarus, Ukraine, Azerbaïdjan, Roumanie, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedoine, Hongrie...), l'AASFN de Saint-Marin a commémoré cette année le 50ème anniversaire du 1er homme dans l'espace.
Deux timbres (0,50€ et 2,40€) ont en fait été émis le 5 avril 2011, consacrés à ce 1er vol du cosmonaute soviétique Youri Gagarine le 12 avril 1961 mais aussi à Alan B. Shepard, le 1er astronaute américain dans l'espace, le 5 mai 1961.
As many postal administrations (Moldova, Italy, Austria, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Romania, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Hungary...), the AASFN of San Marino has commemorated this year the 50th anniversary of the first man in space.
Two stamps (€ 0.50 and € 2.40) have in fact been issued on April 5, 2011, devoted to this first space flight by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961 but also to Alan B. Shepard, the first American astronaut in space, on May 5, 1961.

Ces 2 timbres figurent sur la jolie lettre illustrée ci-dessus postée le 30 juin 2011 de la municipalité (castello) de Fiorentino, située dans le sud de la petite république de Saint-Marin. Merci beaucoup Matteo :-)
Youri Gagarine (1934-1968) fut donc le 1er homme à effectuer une orbite autour de la terre à bord de la capsule Vostok 1.
23 jours plus tard, l'américain Alan Bartlett Shepard (1923-1998) fera de même à bord de la capsule Mercury.
Federico Sarti, le concepteur de cette série, a choisi de représenter les portraits d'époque des deux pionniers sur fond de drapeau de l'URSS et des USA.
Sauf erreur, seule la Moldavie a également émis cette année des timbres consacrés à Gagarine mais aussi à Shepard. L'USPS américaine n'a rendu hommage qu'à Shepard et la poste russe a émis un unique timbre (émission commune avec le Belarus) consacré à Gagarine...
These two stamps appear on the nice illustrated cover above mailed on June 30, 2011 from the municipality (castello) of Fiorentino, located in the south of the small Republic of San Marino. Thank you very much Matteo :-)
Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) made thus the first orbital flight around the Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spaceship.
23 days later, the American Alan Bartlett Shepard (1923-1998) will do the same on board the Mercury capsule.
Federico Sarti, the designer of this series, has chosen to feature the portraits of this period of the two pioneers with the flags of USSR and USA in background.
If I'm not wrong, only Moldova has also issued stamps this year devoted both to Gagarin and Shepard. The USPS has paid tribute only to Shepard and the Russian Post has issued a single stamp (a joint issue with Belarus) devoted to Gagarin...

L' administration postale de Saint-Marin, la plus petite et plus ancienne république au monde, participe chaque année à de nombreuses expositions philatéliques.
De jolies oblitérations spéciales sont émises à ces occasions, comme celles figurant sur les 2 plis ci-dessous, postés depuis le 64ème "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" à Paris et la 28ème "Internationale Briefmarken Börse" à Sindelfingen !
J'aime beaucoup l'oblitération spéciale ci-dessous (en date du 4 novembre 2010, jour d'ouverture du Salon Philatélique d'Automne), évoquant le célèbre musée parisien du Louvre et sa pyramide de verre !
The postal administration of San Marino, the smallest and oldest Republic in the world, participates every year at many philatelic exhibitions.
Some rather nice special cancellations are issued on these occasions, like those on the two covers below, posted since the 64th "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris and the 28th "Internationale Briefmarken Börse" in Sindelfingen !
I really like the special postmark below (dated November 4, 2010, the opening day of the "Salon Philatélique d'Automne"), referring to the famous Parisian Louvre Museum and its glass pyramid !

Les 2 timbres EUROPA ci-dessus ont été conçus par la même artiste, la jeune illustratrice italienne Nicoletta Ceccoli, auteur de nombreux livres pour enfants (thème EUROPA 2010). J'aime beaucoup son style unique mettant en scènes des enfants dans des mondes imaginaires, une jeune fille volant dans le ciel avec des ailes en forme de pages de livre (timbre EUROPA 2010 à 0,60€, émis le 17 mars 2010) à gauche ou cette autre jeune fille marchant sur la terre et ces colombes ayant des lettres pour ailes (timbre EUROPA 2008 (La lettre) à 0,65€, émis le 13 juin 2008) à droite.
A noter également la présence des armoiries de la république de Saint-Marin sur ces 2 enveloppes en haut à gauche.
The two EUROPA stamps above were both designed by the same artist, the young Italian illustrator Nicoletta Ceccoli, author of many children's books (the EUROPA theme in 2010).
I appreciate her unique style featuring children in imaginary worlds, a girl flying in the sky with wings representing the pages of an open book (€ 0.60 EUROPA 2010 stamp, issued on March 17, 2010) to the left or this other girl walking on the Earth and these doves with letter-shaped wings (€ 0.65 EUROPA 2008 stamp (The letter), issued on June 13, 2008) to the right.
To note also the presence of the arms of the Republic of San Marino on these two envelopes in the top left.

Le 2ème souvenir de Saint-Marin ci-dessus a été posté depuis l'Expo philatélique internationale organisée du 29 au 31 octobre 2010 à Sindelfingen en Allemagne (Land du Bade-Wurtemberg). Merci beaucoup Olivier :-)
L'oblitération (en date du 29 octobre) évoque une célèbre sculpture, datant de 1927, située dans la vieille ville de Sindelfingen. Elle représente deux vieilles dames faisant des commérages...
Le timbre (0,65€) fait partie de la série de 2 timbres EUROPA émis le 8 mai 2009 (thème : l'astronomie).
Ce timbre, qui fait référence à l'année mondiale de l'astronomie, représente 6 planètes de notre système solaire, en orbite autour du soleil. L'auteur du timbre, Cristian Ceccaroni, a également représenté les 12 étoiles du drapeau européen dans le ciel ainsi que la silhouette du mont Titano, point culminant de Saint-Marin (739 mètres).

The special postmark (dated October 29) refers to a famous sculpture, dating from 1927, situated in the old town of Sindelfingen. It represents two old ladies gossips...
The stamp (€ 0.65) is part of set of two EUROPA stamps issued on May 8, 2009 (theme : Astronomy).
This stamp, refering to the International Year of Astronomy, is featuring six planets of our solar system, orbiting the sun. The designer of this stamp, Cristian Ceccaroni, has also depicted the twelve stars of the European flag in the sky and also the silhouette of Mount Titano, the highest peak of San Marino (739 meters).

Étant français, je trouve intéressant de découvrir un nouveau pays sur ce blog à travers ses vins !
Merci beaucoup Jean-Pierre pour cette très jolie lettre postée le 12 avril 2010 de la ville de Saint-Marin, capitale de cette petite république (la plus ancienne république au monde, fondée il y a plus de 1700 ans !) du même nom, enclavée dans le territoire italien :-)
Guaita, la plus ancienne des 3 tours (avec Cesta et Montale) qui assuraient autrefois la défense de cette cité fortifiée sur le mont Titano, est représentée sur la jolie oblitération ci-dessous.
L'économie de Saint-Marin est basée essentiellement sur le tourisme mais aussi l'artisanat, l'agriculture et...la philatélie (la vente de timbres représente près de 10% du PIB) !
As a Frenchman, I find it interesting to discover a new country on this blog through its wines !

Guaita, the oldest of the 3 towers (with Cesta and Montale) that asserted in the past the defense of this fortress city on Mount Titano, is featured on the nice postmarks below.
The economy of San Marino is based primarily on tourism, but also on handicrafts, agriculture and... philately (stamp sales represent nearly 10% of GDP) !

La poste de Saint-Marin a donc émis, le 16 juin 2009, un intéressant bloc-feuillet composé de 6 timbres (0,60€ chacun) consacrés à des vins produits dans la république.
La bande inférieure de ce bloc (3 timbres) figure sur la lettre ci-dessus, avec 3 vins blancs à l'honneur : Caldese, Roncale et Moscato Spumante (vin pétillant).
Les premiers vignobles seraient apparus à Saint-Marin entre le 5ème et le 8ème siècle après JC.
Un consortium des vins traditionnels de Saint-Marin a été créé en 1976 afin de redonner du prestige aux différents vignobles du territoire et d'élaborer une charte de qualité de la production du vin, en particulier avec une loi de 1986 instituant une identification d'origine.
Deux vins ci-dessus (Roncale et Moscato) bénéficient de cette identification d'origine avec une étiquette spéciale apposée sur le goulot des bouteilles.
Près de 574 vignobles, représentant une surface totale de 200 hectares, ont été répertoriés sur le petit territoire de Saint-Marin. 2200 tonnes de raisins sont produits chaque année avec 65% de raisins rouges et 28% de raisins blancs.
Ces vignobles sont principalement situés sur les flancs orientaux du mont Titano, sur les communes de Serravalle, Domagnano et Faetano.
The Post of San Marino has so issued on June 16, 2009, an interesting souvenir sheet consisting of 6 stamps (€ 0.60 each) devoted to wines produced in the Republic.
The lower band of this sheet (3 stamps) is included on the letter above, with 3 white wines in the spotlight : Caldese, Roncale and Moscato Spumante (sparkling wine).
The first vineyards appeared in San Marino between the 5th and the 8th century AD.
A consortium of traditional wines of San Marino was founded in 1976 to give renewed prestige to the different vineyards of the area and to develop a charter of quality concerning wine's production, in particular with a law, dating from 1986, establishing an identification of origin.
Two wines above (Roncale and Moscato) benefit from this identification of origin with a special label affixed to the neck of bottles.
Nearly 574 vineyards, occupying a total area of 200 hectares, have been listed on the small territory of San Marino. 2.200 tons of grapes are produced annually with 65% red grapes and 28% white grapes.
These vineyards are mainly located on the eastern slopes of Mount Titano, on the municipalities of Serravalle, Domagnano and Faetano.
