Olympics and Birds in Belgium

Depuis 2 jours, les 29èmes jeux olympiques de Pékin/Beijing ont enfin débuté !
Après une journée blanche hier, la France a remporté aujourd'hui ses 3 premières médailles (en escrime, judo et tir à l'arc)...
Il est également question des ces JO sur la jolie enveloppe ci-dessous, postée le 2 août 2008 de Ieper (Ypres en français), située en Flandre-Occidentale, dans le nord-ouest de la Belgique.

Comme me l'a expliqué Thomas dans ce courrier, les lettres postées à Ieper transitent systématiquement par le centre de tri de Gent (Gand) où une oblitération automatique et ses vagues disgracieuses est apposée, et ce même si les timbres ont déjà été oblitérés, comme ce fut le cas pour les 4 timbres ci-dessous... Quel dommage :-(
Two days ago, the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing have finally begun !
After a day off yesterday, France has won today its three first medals (in fencing, judo and archery)...
Let's speak also about Olympics thanks to the pretty cover below, mailed on August 2, 2008 from Ieper (Ypres in French), located in West Flanders in the north-west Belgium.

As Thomas explained me in his mail, all the letters posted in Ieper are systematically conveyed to a sorting center in Gent (Gand in French), where an automatic cancellation and its unsightly waves is affixed, even if stamps have already been cancelled, as it was the case for the four stamps below... What a pity :-(

Mais venons en maintenant à ces 4 timbres. Les 2 petits timbres de droite font partie de la série courante belges des "Oiseaux de Buzin", du nom du peintre belge spécialisé dans les représentations de fleurs et d'animaux, en particulier d'oiseaux donc !
Cette série, débutée le 30 septembre 1985 et toujours en cours (!), est, à juste titre, souvent considérée comme la plus jolie série courante au monde !
Près de 90 timbres ont été émis depuis plus de 20 ans, avec des timbres avec faciales en francs belges, en euros ou avec les 2 monnaies et avec certains timbres de format horizontal.
Chaque timbre de la série comporte le nom de l'oiseau représenté en français et en flamand, comme sur les 2 timbres ci-dessus : le rossignol philomèle (0,01€, émis le 19 avril 2004) et la bécassine des marais (0,02€, émis le 9 août 2003).
But let's speak now about these four stamps. The two small stamps on the right are part of the Belgian definitive series entitled "Birds of Buzin", named after the Belgian painter specialized in depictions of flowers and animals, especially birds then !
This series, which began on September 30, 1985 and still in progress (!) is, rightly, often regarded as the most beautiful definitive stamp set in the world !
About 90 stamps were issued for more than 20 years, with stamps with values in Belgian francs, euros or with the two currencies and also stamps with horizontal format.
Each stamp of this series includes the name of the represented bird in French and Flemish, as on the two stamps above : the Nightingale (€0.01, issued on April 19, 2004) and Common Snipe (€0.02, issued on August 9, 2003).
Les 2 timbres de gauche font partie de la série, émise le 14 juillet 2008, consacrée donc aux JO de Beijing.
Le timbre au tarif "1" (0,54€ actuellement) illustre l'épreuve cycliste du BMX, inscrite pour la 1ère fois aux JO cette année. Ce sport extrême spectaculaire, né aux USA dans les années 60, est pratiqué sur un circuit bosselé semblable à ceux du motocross.
Les postes chinoises et suisses (sur timbre de service du CIO) ont également émis un timbre "olympique" consacré au BMX. Y en a-t-il d'autres ?
Le 2ème timbre à 0,90€ représente l'épreuve du relais féminin 4x100m, en athlétisme. La poste belge a sans doute voulu rappelé que l'équipe belge a termine 3ème dans cette épreuve lors des championnats du monde en 2007 !
Elle a voulu surtout rappelé que la Belgique a de grandes chances de médailles en athlétisme à ces JO grâce à Kim Gevaert (100m, 200m et 4x100m) ou Tia Hellebaut (saut en hauteur)...
A noter que la poste belge a fait figurer sur ces timbre les anneaux olympiques (normal !) et Peking (flamand) et Pékin (français), et non Beijing comme sur le bloc émis cette année par la France...
Dans cette même série, la poste belge a également émis un bloc-feuillet consacré au tennis. Je devrais vous en dire plus très prochainement !
The two stamps on the left are part of the series, issued on July 14, 2008, therefore devoted to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The stamp with the "1" rate (€0.54 currently) illustrates the BMX cycling event, for the first time at the Olympic Games this year. This extreme and spectacular sport, born in the USA in the 60's, is practised on a bumpy circuit similar to those used for motocross.
The Chinese and Swiss (on an IOC official stamp) Posts also issued an "Olympic" stamps depicting BMX this year. But maybe some others postal administrations too ?
The second €0.90 stamp represents the women's 4x100m relay in athletics. The Belgian Post has undoubtedly wanted to remind us that the Belgian team has finished third in this event at the 2007 World Championships !
But they wanted especially to remind that Belgium had great chances to win medals in athletics at these Olympics thanks to Kim Gevaert (100m, 200m and 4x100m) or Tia Hellebaut (high jump)...
Note that the Belgian Post has included, on these 2 stamps, the Olympic rings (normal !) and Peking (Flemish) and Beijing (French), and not Beijing like on the sheet issued this year by France...
In the same series, Belgium has also issued a souvenir sheet devoted to tennis. I should tell you more about this issue soon !
