450th Anniversary of the Polish Post

Le 18 octobre 1558, le roi Sigismond II Auguste (1520-1572) mettait en place la première liaison postale entre les villes de Cracovie et Venise en Italie, via Vienne.
Cracovie fut la capitale du royaume de Pologne jusqu'en 1596, remplacée alors par Varsovie.
Le 1er système postal en Pologne était ainsi né il y a 450 ans. La poste polonaise a commémoré cet anniversaire avec l'émission d'un splendide bloc-feuillet de 3 timbres, émis le 15 septembre 2008.
Ce bloc numéroté, imprimé en héliogravure et taille-douce (personnages) figure sur la lettre ci-dessous postée le 2 avril 2009 de la ville de Tarnobrzeg.

On 18th of October 1558, King Sigismund II Augustus (1520-1572) set up the first postal route between the cities of Krakow and Venice in Italy, via Vienna.
Krakow was the capital of the Kingdom of Poland until 1596, then replaced by Warsaw.
The fisrt postal system in Poland was then born 450 years ago. The Post of Poland has of course commemorated this anniversary with the issue of a beautiful souvenir sheet of three stamps, issued on 15th of September 2008.
This numbered sheet, printed in rotogravure and steel engraving (characters) is included on the cover below mailed on April 2, 2009 from the city of Tarnobrzeg.

Le roi de Pologne et Grand-Duc de Lituanie, Sigismond II Auguste, est représenté sur le timbre du milieu avec sans doute la lettre instituant cette liaison postale entre Cracovie et Venise. Cette lettre mentionne également le nom de Prosper Provana, que le roi chargea de diriger la poste royale de Pologne en 1558.
Prosper Provana figure sur le timbre à gauche. Le dernier timbre à droite évoque Sebastian Montelupi, originaire de Florence, qui fut chargé en 1583, sous le règne du roi Étienne Báthory, successeur du roi Sigismond II et puis d'Henri de Valois, de développer ce système postal en Pologne et envers l'étranger.
La partie supérieure de ce bloc reproduit une vue d'époque de Cracovie alors que la ville de Venise figure dans la marge inférieure.
The King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, Sigismund II Augustus, is depicted on the stamp in the middle with probably the letter establishing the postal link between Krakow and Venice. This letter also mentions the name of Prosper Provana, commissioned by the King to lead the Poland's Royal Post in 1558.
Prosper Provana is represented on the stamp on the left. The third stamp on the right refers to Sebastian Montelupi, a native of Florence, who was charged in 1583 under the reign of King Stephen Báthory, the successor of King Sigismund II and then of Henri de Valois, to develop the postal system in Poland and abroad.
The upper part of this sheet includes an old view (16th century) of Krakow and the city of Venice appears in the lower margin.

Cette lettre est très spéciale car elle est affranchie avec un timbre de très grand format, imprimé sur un support en soie par la société Cartor Security Printing, adepte des techniques d'impressions originales :-)
Ce timbre, émis le 19 décembre 2008, commémore également les 450 ans de la poste polonaise, avec une reproduction d'un messager de la poste (avec le symbole du cor) à cheval devant un panorama Renaissance de la ville de Cracovie.
A noter la forte valeur faciale, 20 złotych (environ 4,62€) de ce timbre.
La poste polonaise avait déjà émis un 1er timbre en soie (véritable ?) en 1958, pour célébrer alors les 400 ans de la poste.
Peu d'administrations postales ont osé émettre des figurines sur support en soie : le Bhoutan en 1969 (peintures religieuses), l'Italie en 2001 (enveloppe pré-timbrée, industrie de la soie dans la ville de Côme) ou la Mongolie en 2006 (Gengis Khan)...

This letter is very special because it is franked with a very large format stamp, printed on a silk support by the Cartor Security Printing company, which is often using some very special printing technologies :-)
This stamp, issued on 19th of December 2008, also commemorates the 450th anniversary of the Polish Post, with a reproduction of a postal messenger (with the symbol of the horn) on horseback in front of a panorama of the Renaissance city of Krakow.
Note the high nominal value, 20.00 złotych (about € 4.62) of this stamp.
The Polish Post had already issued a first stamp on silk (veritable ?) in 1958, then to celebrate the 400 years of the Post.
Very few postal administrations have yet issued silk stamps : Bhutan in 1969 (religious paintings), Italy in 2001 (pre-stamped envelope, silk industry in the city of Como) and Mongolia in 2006 (Genghis Khan)...
