Governor Macquarie in Australia

Il y a 200 ans, le général britannique Lachlan Macquarie (1762-1824) débarquait en Nouvelle-Galles-du-sud pour devenir gouverneur de cette colonie jusqu'en 1821.
Il mis à profit ces 11 ans de mandat pour transformer et développer fondamentalement la colonie anglaise, alors base pénitentiaire, qui deviendra une nouvelle base de peuplement civil.
Aujourd'hui, cet état d'Australie le plus peuplé lui doit encore beaucoup, lui qui joua un rôle important dans son développement social, économique et architectural.
La poste australienne a souhaité rendre hommage à celui parfois surnommé "le père de l'Australie" en commémorant le bicentenaire du début de son mandat de gouverneur avec l'émission de 4 timbres émis se-tenant en bloc.
200 years ago, the British General Lachlan Macquarie (1762-1824) landed in New South Wales to become governor of this colony until 1821.
He used these 11 years in office to fundamentally transform and develop the British colony, then penitentiary based, which became a new base of civilian settlements.
This nowadays State is certainly the most populous and prosperous of Australia thanks to Macquarie's important role in its initial social, economic and architectural development.
Australia Post has wanted to honor this sometimes nicknamed "Father of Australia" by commemorating the bicentennial of the beginning of his term as governor with the issue of four se-tenant stamps.

Comme de coutume, la poste australienne a judicieusement choisi le lieu d'émission "1er jour" de cette série : le Macquarie Centre, un centre commercial situé proche de Macquarie Park, dans la banlieue nord de la ville de Sydney, capitale de l'état de Nouvelle-Galles-du-sud!
Le campus principal de l'université Macquarie est également tout proche...
Le portrait (auteur inconnu) du gouverneur Macquarie, reproduit sur l'enveloppe et un des timbres, est conservé à la bibliothèque d'état de Nouvelle-Galles-du-sud.
Les 3 autres timbres évoquent les caractéristiques principales de son mandat de gouverneur, le visionnaire, l'émancipateur et le constructeur, à travers des vues d'époque.
Macquarie favorisa en effet l'émancipation et le réinsertion des anciens forçats, fit construire des bâtiments publics (conçus pour la plupart par l'architecte Francis Greenway), fonda une banque, encouragea l'exploration du continent et l'élevage, introduisit la monnaie et stimula l'expansion de la colonie.

As usual, Australia Post has wisely chosen the place of issue of this series : the Macquarie Centre, a shopping center near Macquarie Park, a suburb in northern Sydney, capital of the State of New South Wales !

The portrait (unknown artist) of Governor Macquarie, reproduced on the envelope and one of the stamps, is kept at the State Library of New South Wales.
The other three stamps evoke the main characteristics of Macquarie's governorship, the visionary, the emancipator and the builder, through different views of this time.
Macquarie indeed favored the emancipation and rehabilitation of former convicts, built public buildings (mostly designed by architect Francis Greenway), founded a bank, encouraged the exploration of the continent and livestock farming, introduced the currency and stimulated the expansion of the colony.
