La poste française vient de consacrer sa 4ème série de timbres, en 18 ans, à Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510), un des plus grands peintres du Quattrocento italien.
L'émission de ce bloc-feuillet de 2 timbres, le 4 novembre 2010, coïncide avec le 500ème anniversaire de la mort du peintre, à Florence en 1510.
C'est son oeuvre intitulée "Le Printemps", peinte vers 1482 et conservée à la galerie des Offices à Florence, qui est reproduite pour la 1ère fois sur ce nouveau bloc-feuillet français. Cette peinture est sans doute, avec "La naissance de Vénus" (timbre émis en 2008), l'un de ses plus grands chefs-d'oeuvre...
The French Post has just devoted its fourth series of stamps, in 18 years, to Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510), one of the greatest painters of the Italian Quattrocento.
The issue of this souvenir sheet of two stamps, on November 4, 2010, coincides with the 500th anniversary of the painter's death in Florence in 1510.
It's his work entitled "Primavera", painted around 1482 and kept at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, which is reproduced for the first time on this new French souvenir sheet. This painting is without doubt, with "The Birth of Venus" (stamp issued in 2008), one of his greatest masterpieces...

C'est ce bloc qui figure sur l'enveloppe ci-dessus avec oblitération "1er jour" (initiales du peintre) émise le jour d'ouverture du Salon Philatélique d'Automne à Paris.
Cette peinture très complexe, commandée à Botticelli par la famille de Médicis, serait une allégorie mythologique inspirée des Métamorphoses d'Ovide (La Primavera) et était réservée à un public intellectuel et érudit de cette période de la Première Renaissance italienne.
Mercure, le messager des dieux, est représenté à gauche à côté des trois Grâces (timbre à 1,40€), filles de Zeus. Vénus est au centre, vêtue d'une toge rouge, avec son fils Cupidon au-dessus d'elle tirant une flèche vers les Grâces.
Le 2ème timbre à droite (0,87€) représente Flora, déesse de la beauté et divinité des fleurs et du printemps, poussée à droite par la nymphe Chloris poursuivie par Zéphyr, le dieu du vent...
This sheet is included on the cover above with a FDC cancellation (initials of the painter) issued on the opening day of the "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris.
This very complex painting, commissioned by the Medici family, would be a mythology allegory inspired by the Ovid's Metamorphoses (La Primavera) and was restricted to an intellectual and scholar public of this period of the First Italian Renaissance.
Mercury, messenger of the gods, is featured on the left side in front of the three Graces (€ 1.40 stamp), daughters of Zeus. Venus is at the center, dressed in a red toga, with her son Cupid at her top shooting an arrow to the Graces.
The second stamp (€ 0.87) is featuring Flora, goddess of beauty and divinity of flowers and spring, pushed to the right by the nymph Chloris pursued by Zephyrus, the god of the wind...

Flora et sa robe fleurie à droite serait aussi une allégorie de la ville de Florence...

To note that the Three Graces on the left were reproduced on a splendid large format stamp, issued in 1995 in Monaco at the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the artist's birth.
