Merci beaucoup Niall (IMPS - The International Moldovan Philatelic Society) et Ala pour cette très intéressante lettre, envoyée tardivement, le 24 juin 2020 depuis Chișinău (MD-2012), à cause de la crise sanitaire liée à la Covid-19 et à l'arrêt des échanges postaux dans la plupart des pays.
Cette lettre concerne en effet le TAD spécial mis en circulation le 20 mars 2020 pour commémorer le 200ème anniversaire (jour pour jour) de la naissance d'Alexandru Ioan Cuza (1820-1873), qui fut Prince souverain (Domnitor) de Moldavie et de Valachie entre 1859 et 1862 puis le 1er souverain de Roumanie (suite à l'union des Principautés de Moldavie et de Valachie) entre 1862 et 1866.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza est à l'honneur sur le bloc-feuillet (6,20 L, tirage : 10000) utilisé à droite sur cette enveloppe, émis le 14 novembre 2008, dans la série (débutée en 1993 !) consacrée aux Princes de Moldavie.
Thank you very much Niall (IMPS - The International Moldovan Philatelic Society) and Ala for this very interesting letter, sent late, on June 24, 2020 from Chișinău (MD-2012), due to the health crisis linked to Covid-19 and to the stopping of postal exchanges in most countries.
This letter indeed concerns the special postmark put into circulation on March 20, 2020 to commemorate the 200th anniversary (day to day) of the birth of Alexandru Ioan Cuza (1820-1873), who was Sovereign Prince (Domnitor) of Moldavia and Wallachia between 1859 and 1862 then the 1st sovereign of Romania (following the union of the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia) between 1862 and 1866.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza is in the spotlight on the souvenir sheet (6.20 L, print run: 10,000) used on the right on this envelope, issued on November 14, 2008, in the series (started in 1993!) devoted to the Princes of Moldavia.
Le terme Moldavie est souvent source de confusion dans l'histoire, Alexandru Ioan Cuza ayant été souverain des Principautés unies de Moldavie et de Valachie, la Principauté de Moldavie désignant à cette époque, la partie orientale de la Roumanie actuelle, à ne pas confondre avec la République de Moldavie telle que nous la connaissons aujourd'hui qui faisait alors partie de la Bessarabie...
Cette série "Princes de Moldavie" initiée par la poste moldave prête donc également à confusion puisque Alexandru Ioan Cuza n'a pas été souverain de Bessarabie, sauf erreur de ma part.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza a été toutefois une figure importante de la Révolution de 1848 en Principauté de Moldavie et a lancé une série de réformes qui ont contribué à la modernisation de la société roumaine et de ses structures étatiques.
Le fond de ce bloc-feuillet ci-dessus le représente arrivant au Dealul Mitropoliei à Bucarest pour être élu Prince de Moldavie et de Valachie (les armoiries des 2 Principautés sont représentées en haut à droite).
L'autre timbre (15,50 L), émis le le 9 octobre 2019, est consacré au 145ème anniversaire de la création de l'Union Postale Universelle (UPU).
The term Moldova (especially in French, a unique term Moldova being used for Moldavia and Moldova) is often a source of confusion in history, Alexandru Ioan Cuza having been sovereign of the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, the Principality of Moldavia designating at that time, the eastern part of present-day Romania, not to be confused with the Republic of Moldova as we know it today which was then part of Bessarabia ...
This "Princes of Moldavia" stamp set initiated by the Post of Moldova is therefore also confusing since Alexandru Ioan Cuza was not ruler of Bessarabia or Moldova, unless I am mistaken.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza was, however, an important figure in the Revolution of 1848 in the Principality of Moldavia and initiated a series of reforms which contributed to the modernization of Romanian society and its state structures.
The background of this souvenir sheet above represents him arriving at the Dealul Mitropoliei in Bucharest to be elected Prince of Moldavia and Wallachia (the coats of arms of the 2 Principalities are featured at the top right).
The other stamp (15.50 L), issued on October 9, 2019, is dedicated to the 145th anniversary of the creation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
Ce TAD (monogramme du prince) évoquant les 200 ans de la naissance d'Alexandru Ioan Cuza, a été appliqué sur l'enveloppe spéciale ci-dessus, à tirage très limité, conçue par Niall !
Le timbre personnalisé (1,75 L) ci-dessus a été spécialement créé pour l'occasion, conçu à partir d'un portrait du prince et d'une médaille (ou sceau ?) datant de 1859 mentionnant son nom et ces Principautés unies de Moldavie et de Valachie (reproduite également sur l'enveloppe à gauche).
La mention "dernier souverain de Moldavie" figure également sur cette enveloppe, sans doute en référence à la création des Principautés unies de Roumanie à partir de 1862.
This postmark (Prince's monogram) evoking the 200th anniversary of the birth of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, has been applied to the special envelope above, issued in very limited edition, designed by Niall!
The personalized stamp (1.75 L) above was specially created for the occasion, designed from a portrait of the prince and a medal (or seal?) dating from 1859 mentioning the Prince's name and these United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (also reproduced on the envelope on the left).
The mention "last ruler of Moldavia" (not to be confused with "last ruler of Moldova") also appears on this envelope, probably in reference to the creation of the Romanian United Principalities from 1862.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza sera destitué en 1866, remplacé par Carol Ier, et passera le reste de sa vie en exil à Paris, Vienne et Wiesbaden.
L'année 2009 était une année de jubilé en République de Moldavie avec toute une série de manifestations culturelles, et philatéliques (!), consacrées aux célébrations du 650ème anniversaire de la fondation de la Principauté de Moldavie en 1359.
A cette occasion, des cartes postales représentant des portraits de princes de Moldavie ont été éditées par la poste moldave en 2009 comme celle ci-dessus (tirage : 1000), avec le même portrait d'Alexandru Ioan Cuza que celui figurant sur le bloc-feuillet émis en 2008.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza was dismissed in 1866, replaced by Carol I, and spent the rest of his life in exile in Paris, Vienna and Wiesbaden.
The year 2009 was a jubilee year in the Republic of Moldova with a whole series of cultural and philatelic (!) events dedicated to the celebrations of the 650th anniversary of the founding of the Principality of Moldova (or Moldavia) in 1359.
On this occasion, postcards representing portraits of Princes of Moldavia were published by the Post of Moldova in 2009 such as the one above (print run: 1,000), with the same portrait of Alexandru Ioan Cuza as the one on the souvenir sheet issued in 2008.
