"250th birth anniversary of Beethoven" m/s on cover from Faroe Islands

Bloc-feuillet "250ème anniversaire de la naissance de Beethoven" sur lettre des îles Féroé

Parmi la vingtaine d'administrations postales (Allemagne, Ukraine, France, Jersey, Guernesey, République serbe de Bosnie, Monaco, Vatican, Moldavie, Portugal, Macédoine du Nord, Bulgarie, Liban, Roumanie, SMOM, Gibraltar, Autriche, Hongrie...) ayant émis cette année des timbres commémorant le 250ème anniversaire de la naissance du compositeur et pianiste allemand Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), la poste des îles Féroé (Posta) a sans doute mis en circulation le bloc-feuillet le plus original consacré à l'un des musiciens les plus connus à travers le monde.
C'est ce bloc-feuillet (44 DKK), conçu par l'artiste et musicien Heiðrik á Heygum (né en 1983), qui figure sur la lettre ci-dessous envoyée le 8 octobre 2020 depuis Tórshavn, la capitale de cet archipel situé dans l'océan Atlantique nord.
D'après le communiqué de la poste féroïenne : "Il arrive que l'art vole de ses propres ailes, vive sa propre vie et se déploie bien au-delà de l'univers de l'artiste et de son époque. Ceci est particulièrement vrai dans le monde de la musique et plus particulièrement parmi les œuvres des grands compositeurs classiques".  
Among the twenty postal administrations (Germany, Ukraine, France, Jersey, Guernsey, Serbian Republic of Bosnia, Monaco, Vatican, Moldova, Portugal, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Lebanon, Romania, SMOM, Gibraltar, Austria, Hungary ...) having issued this year stamps commemorating the 250th anniversary of the birth of the German composer and pianist Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), the Faroe Islands Post (Posta) has undoubtedly put into circulation the most original souvenir sheet dedicated to one of the most famous musicians around the world.
It is this souvenir sheet (44 DKK), designed by artist and musician Heiðrik á Heygum (born in 1983), which was used on the letter below sent on October 8, 2020 from Tórshavn, the capital of this archipelago located in the North Atlantic Ocean.
According to the Faroese postal statement: "Occasionally, art is created which takes on its own existence and wings its flight beyond the artist's universe and the confines of his earthly life. This is especially true of the world of music and, most eminently for the works of the great classical composers".

 

C'est ce que Heiðrik á Heygum a voulu illustrer sur ce bloc-feuillet, montrant Beethoven habillé du costume national, avec des paysages féroïens emblématiques dans le fond et entouré d'exemples tout aussi symboliques de la vie animale et végétale locale.
L'allemand Beethoven, qui passa la majeure partie de sa vie à Vienne, en Autriche, et qui ne connaissait peut-être même pas l'existence des îles Féroé, fait ici tout naturellement partie de la culture féroïenne.

Ce bloc-feuillet a été conçu à partir d'un célèbre portrait du musicien (en train de composer la Missa solemnis) datant de 1820, par le peintre allemand Joseph Karl Stieler, exposé dans sa maison natale à Bonn.
A noter en haut à gauche sur le timbre, la présence du logo officiel des célébrations de ce 250ème anniversaire, "BTHVN2020" (rappelant que Beethoven signait parfois certaines de ses partitions et lettres avec uniquement les 5 consonnes de son nom).
Avec sa musique immortelle, Beethoven est considéré comme un artiste radical et un visionnaire créatif, ayant défendu passionnément les idéaux de liberté et de fraternité, en particulier à travers sa Symphonie n°9 composée entre 1822 et 1824, ayant profondément influencé l'histoire de la musique au 19ème et 20ème siècle. 
This is what Heiðrik á Heygum wanted to illustrate on this souvenir sheet, showing Beethoven dressed in the national costume, with emblematic Faroese landscapes in the background and surrounded by equally iconic examples of local fauna and flora.
The German-born Beethoven, who spent most of his life in Vienna, Austria, and who may not even have known about the Faroe Islands, is a natural part of Faroese culture here.
This souvenir sheet was based on a famous portrait of the musician (while composing the Missa solemnis) dating from 1820, by the German painter Joseph Karl Stieler, exhibited in his birthplace in Bonn
To note at the top left on the stamp, the presence of the official logo of the celebrations of this 250th anniversary, "BTHVN2020" (reminding that Beethoven sometimes signed some of his scores and letters with only the 5 consonants of his name). 
With his immortal music, Beethoven is considered a radical artist and a creative visionary, having passionately defended the ideals of freedom and brotherhood, in particular through his Symphony No. 9 composed between 1822 and 1824, having deeply influenced the history of music in the 19th and 20th century.
