"Gabrovo Carnival" souvenir sheet on FDC from Bulgaria

Bloc-feuillet "Carnaval de Gabrovo" sur FDC de Bulgarie

Un grand merci Borislav pour ce splendide FDC envoyé en recommandé, concernant le bloc-feuillet mis en circulation le 11 novembre 2020, consacré au carnaval de Gabrovo.
Il n'existe pas de preuves écrites ni de publications indiquant quand a eu lieu le premier carnaval de masse dans cette ville de Gabrovo, située non loin du centre géographique de la Bulgarie et connue pour être la capitale internationale de l'humour et de la satire.
La première procession bruyante et joyeuse de personnes déguisées, connue sous le nom d'Oleliynya, aurait eu lieu au 19ème siècle, sans interruption depuis, à l'exception de la 2ème guerre mondiale et du début des années 1990 après la chute du communisme.
Depuis 1998, ce carnaval de Gabrovo est à nouveau une des manifestations culturelles les plus importantes du pays, organisée chaque année au mois de mai traditionnellement.

There is no written evidence or publications indicating when the first mass carnival took place in this town of Gabrovo, located not far from the geographic center of Bulgaria and known to be the international capital of humour and satire.
The first loud and joyful procession of disguised peopl, known as the Oleliynya, is said to have taken place in the 19th century, without interruption since, with the exception of WWII and the early 1990s after the fall of communism.
Since 1998, this Gabrovo Carnival is once again one of the most important cultural events in the country, traditionally organized every year in May.

 

Le programme de ce carnaval comprend des défilés, des marionnettes de rue et des spectacles d'acrobatie, des concerts, des spectacles de cirque...
Une attention particulière est portée au chat, symbole de la ville de Gabrovo, où une blague populaire dit que les habitants sont si frugaux qu'ils coupent la queue de leurs chats pour que la porte se ferme plus vite après eux et que la chaleur ne s'échappe pas en hiver !
C’est pourquoi la mascotte du carnaval est un chat noir géant avec une queue coupée, ce qu'illustre en partie le TAD Premier Jour et ce bloc-feuillet (3 leva, tirage inconnu) conçu par Pepa Markova, qui a signé en bas sur cette enveloppe. A noter qu'une version non-dentelée de ce bloc-feuillet a également été imprimée.
Ce carnaval est également populaire pour son utilisation de chansons traditionnelles des Balkans, de chorégraphies folkloriques et de manifestations mettant en avant l'humour particulier des habitants de Gabrovo, où existe une Maison de l'humour et de la satire ("Дом на Хумора и Сатирата"), mentionnée sur le cachet appliqué en haut à gauche sur cette enveloppe.
Cette maison est à la fois un musée et une galerie d'art, consacrée à cet humour local, comprenant des dessins animés, des photographies, des peintures ou des sculptures. Cette maison illustre également la devise de Gabrovo, capitale de l'humour : "Le monde dure parce qu'il rit" !
The program of this carnival includes parades, street puppets and acrobatic shows, concerts, circus shows ...
Particular attention is paid to the cat, a symbol of the town of Gabrovo, where a popular joke says that inhabitants are so frugal that they cut off the tails of their cats so the door closes faster after them and the heat doesn't escape in wintertime.
That's why the carnival mascot is a giant black cat with a cut-off tail, which is partly illustrated by the First Day postmark and this souvenir sheet (3 leva, unknown print run) designed by Pepa Markova, who signed on this envelope. To note that an imperforated version of this souvenir sheet has also been printed.
This carnival is also popular for its use of traditional Balkan songs, folk choreographies and events highlighting the particular humour of the inhabitants of Gabrovo, where there is a House of Humour and Satire ("Дом на Хумора и Сатирата"), mentioned on the cachet applied at the top left on this envelope.
This house is both a museum and an art gallery, devoted to this local humor, including cartoons, photographs, paintings or sculptures. This house also illustrates the motto of Gabrovo, capital of humour: "The world lasts because it laughs"!
