My first cover from Austria !
I'm very pleased to show you today my first cover received from Austria !
Florian thank you very much :-)
This is more precisely a Postal Stationery put on sale on May 16 2003 to commemorate the 1,100 years of the Austrian town of Pram located in Upper Austria near the German border.
The illustration on the left shows on foreground this village's Church located in a castle and a fountain on the right. The parish of this church contains a remarkable piece : the "Stephanus altar" created by Johann Peter Schwanthaler the elder. I suppose that it's a part of this altar that is reproduced on the pre-printed €0.55 stamp ?
The St. Nicolas Church also appears in the background.
Florian has completed the postage with a €1.00 stamp issued on September 21 2008 during the WIPA08 Philatelic Exhibition in Vienna in tribute to actress Romy Schneider (1938-1982).
This beautiful portrait by pop-art artist Andreas Reimann was chosen to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the birth of the actress, the eternal Sissi, so beloved in France where she performed in numerous movies, including "The important thing is to love" and "A simple story" for which she received the French César Award for best actress.
Her career was marked by many tragic family events.
The postal administrations of Gibraltar, Germany or France had already paid tribute to her.
The special cancellation was issued on October 5 2008 in Wies in Styria (Deutschlandsberg, south-east of Austria) to celebrate the 135 years of the "Wieserbahn" railway line, started in 1873.
This 50 km line, managed by the GKB (Graz Köflacher Bahn) connects the cities of Lieboch to Wies-Eibiswald. For amateurs, the postmark shows an old locomotive Dampflok 56.3115 represented under a mysterious building (where is it located ?).
To be complete, the "MeineMarke" (the equivalent of "MonTimbreàMoi" in France) service of the Austrian Post proposes since August 25 2008 the € 0.55 personalized stamp above celebrating the same anniversary.
Hi Eric!
RépondreSupprimerThe "mysterious building" of the cancellation is Burgstall Castle, a renaissance castle, which was first mentioned in 1280. Today it is a school for domestic economy and agriculture.
Nice greetings from Austria,
Florian
Thanks Florian for these usefull details about this castle !
RépondreSupprimerI didn't notice when I wrote this post today but I believe that this is this same castle that appears on the personalized stamp, right ?
Could you tell us where is precisely located this castle ? I suppose somewhere on this railway line...
Bye
Eric
The castle is located in Wies, a village of 2400 inhabitants in Western Styria. It was initially a fortress, but then was rebuilt to a Rennaissance castle by Veith Georg of Eibiswalder in the 16th century. It was owned by many nobilities, for example by the Knights of Eibiswalder, the Counts of Schrottenbach, the Counts of Stubenberg, and the Counts of Herberstein.
RépondreSupprimerThe first record of Wies dates back to 1170. Since 1797 there was coal mining, which lead to an economic boost of the region. The Wieserbahn was established in 1873. This event was commemorated by the issue of the personalised stamp on October 5, 2008. You can see the date and location on the cancellation too.
Finally I can say, that Wies is a nice village, worth a visit! ;-)
Nice greetings from Styria,
Florian
Thanks Florian !
RépondreSupprimerI'll maybe visit Austria and Styria one day :-)
Eric
