200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln

2009 est décidément une année philatélique riche en commémoration !
Après Louis Braille ou Felix Mendelssohn, nous célébrons aussi les 200 ans de la naissance d'Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865).
Cette célébration a lieu l'année où Barack Obama est devenu président des Etats-Unis, lui qui voue une véritable admiration envers Lincoln, dont le nom reste à jamais associé à la guerre de Sécession et à l'abolition de l'esclavage...
La poste américaine a émis le 9 février 2009 une série de 4 timbres à 42c consacrés à la vie de Lincoln. La vente "1er jour" de ces timbres a eu lieu dans le Capitole de Springfield (Illinois), ville où Lincoln vécu entre 1837 et 1861.

This celebration takes place the year when Barack Obama is elected president of the United States. Obama dedicates a genuine admiration for Lincoln, whose name remains forever associated with the American Civil War and the abolition of slavery...
The American Post has issued on February 9 2009 a series of four 42c stamps dedicated to Lincoln's life. The First Day of issue of these stamps was held in the Old State Capitol in Springfield (Illinois), where Lincoln lived between 1837 and 1861.

A noter malheureusement la disgracieuse oblitération mécanique apposée lors du transit de la lettre par Charlotte, la plus grande ville de l'état :-(
Chacun des 4 timbres évoquent une période importante de la vie de Lincoln. Les deux ci-dessus sont consacrés aux débuts avec, à droite, une reproduction de la toute 1ère photographie (1846) le représentant en train de fendre une bûche pour construire une barrière ferroviaire. Cette photo fut utilisée par le parti républicain lors de la candidature de Lincoln à la présidentielle en 1860, pour mettre en valeur son côté travailleur !
L'autre timbre ci-dessus évoque la période où Lincoln fut avocat avec une reproduction d'une photo datant de 1858 le montrant dans un tribunal de l'Illinois, l'état dans lequel il fut avocat pendant 25 ans.
Les 2 autres timbres de la série le montrent en campagne électorale puis en président des Etats-Unis.
Abraham Lincoln a été le 16ème président des Etats-Unis entre 1861 et 1865. Il fut assassiné le 15 avril 1865 par un sympathisant sudiste. Il reste l'un des présidents les plus admirés de l'histoire américaine.
Two of these four stamps are included on the nice letter above, mailed on February 14 2009 from the city of Etowah, North Carolina.

Each of the four stamps evoke a period in the life of Lincoln. The above two one are devoted to the earliest years with on the right, a reproduction of the very first photograph (1846) representing him splitting a log to build a fence rail. This picture was used by the Republican Party for the Lincoln's presidential campaign in 1860 in order to enhance his appeal to the working man !
The other stamp above refers to the period when Lincoln was a lawyer with a reproduction of a photograph dating from 1858 depicting him in a courtroom of Illinois, the state in which he was attornay for 25 years.
The other two stamps in the series are showing him during an election campaign and then as president of the United States.
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States between 1861 and 1865. He was assassinated on April 15 1865 by a Confederate sympathizer. He remains one of the most admired presidents of the American history.

Jean-Claude a eu la gentillesse de joindre à sa lettre deux intéressantes cartes pré-timbrées émises par l'USPS.
Celle ci-dessus, émise le 26 avril 2008, est consacrée aux 200 ans de la fondation de l'université du mont Sainte-Marie à Emmitsburg, dans le Maryland. Il s'agit de la 2ème plus ancienne université catholique des Etats-Unis.
Le timbre reproduit une aquarelle montrant "The Terrace", un des lieux typiques du vaste campus.
Jean-Claude was kind enough to include in his letter two interesting stamped cards issued by the USPS.
The one above, issued on April 26 2008, is devoted to the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This is the 2nd oldest Catholic University in the USA.
The stamp reproduces a watercolor painting showing "The Terrace", a typical place of the vast campus.

La 2ème carte ci-dessus a été émise le 12 mai 2008 à Washington DC. Le timbre évoque un détail d'un chapiteau de style corinthien d'une des colonnes du Capitole à Washington.
Il s'agit à l'origine d'un dessin de Thomas U. Walter, datant de 1854, réalisé lors des travaux d'agrandissement du Capitole.
Le Capitole des Etats-Unis est le coeur du pouvoir législatif. Dans chaque aile siègent le Sénat et la chambre des représentants.
The second card above was issued on May 12 2008 in Washington DC. The stamp evokes a detail of a Corinthian style capital from one of the columns of the United States Capitol in Washington.
It is originally a drawing by Thomas U. Walter, dating from 1854, made during the enlargement of the Capitol's building.
The US Capitol is the American heart of legislative power. The Senate and the House of Representatives are in session in each wing of the building.
