Au cours d'une réunion bilatérale organisée le 4 septembre 2019 à Vladivostok, le président russe Vladimir Poutine a officiellement dévoilé le timbre consacré au 150ème anniversaire de la naissance du Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), en présence du premier ministre indien, Narandra Modi.
Ce timbre (40 roubles), imprimé en feuille de 15 timbres, a été conçu par O. Savina à partir d'un des nombreux portraits de Gandhi, sur fond de drapeau indien.

During a bilateral meeting on September 4, 2019 in Vladivostok, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially unveiled the stamp dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narandra Modi.
This stamp (40 rubles), printed in a sheet of 15 stamps, was designed by O. Savina from one of Gandhi's many portraits, on an Indian flag background.

Le Mahatma Gandhi, né en 1869 à Pordanbar (état du Gujarat), surnommé le "Père de la Nation" en Inde, fut un des pionniers du mouvement d'indépendance du pays, prônant la désobéissance, la non-violence et le concept du "swaraj" (autodétermination).
Le 30 janvier 1948, en chemin vers une réunion de prière, Gandhi est assassiné à New Delhi par un hindou nationaliste.
Hors Inde, il semble qu'une centaine d'administrations postales ont émis ou vont mettre en circulation cette année des timbres consacrés au 150ème anniversaire de la naissance de Gandhi, un record !
