Le 3 décembre 1967, le chirurgien sud-africain Christiaan Barnard (1922-2001) est devenu une célébrité mondiale après avoir réalisé la 1ère transplantation cardiaque orthotopique d'homme à homme (le patient s'appelait Louis Washkansky, âgé de 55 ans et souffrant de diabète et d'insuffisance cardiaque).
Le patient a survécu pendant 18 jours avant de succomber à une pneumonie massive induite par son traitement immunitaire.
Entre 1967 et 1973, Christiaan Barnard effectua 10 transplantations orthotopiques et, avec son équipe, 48 transplantations hétérotopiques (entre 1975 et 1983).
La poste sud-africaine avait célébré cet exploit médical avec une série de 2 timbres émise le 7 juillet 1969, de nombreuses autres administrations postales à travers le monde ayant fait de même ces 50 dernières années.

The South African Post had celebrated this medical feat with a series of 2 stamps issued on July 7, 1969, many other postal administrations around the world having done the same in the past 50 years.
La 1ère greffe de coeur en France (et en Europe) a eu lieu le 27 avril 1968 (par l'équipe du professeur Christian Cabrol), un timbre française avait été émis en 2008 pour rappeler cet exploit.
Le 1er décembre 2017, la poste sud-africaine a émis un timbre autocollant (tarif "B4" pour un envoi domestique, grande enveloppe - 11,15 rands actuellement, couvrant l'envoi d'une lettre standard en France - 10,70 rands) consacré au 50ème anniversaire de cette 1ère transplantation cardiaque, ayant eu lieu dans l'hôpital Groote Schuur au Cap.
Ce timbre (tirage : 100000, conception : Thea Clemons) figure sur la lettre ci-dessus envoyée le 22 décembre 2019 depuis le bureau postal situé dans l'aéroport international Oliver Reginald Tambo à Johannesburg, le plus grand du pays, portant le nom (depuis 2006) d'un ancien militant de la cause anti-apartheid et président de l'ANC.
