EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on cover from Faroe Islands

Très heureux de partager avec vous cette lettre envoyée le 27 août 2020 depuis Tórshavn, la capitale de cet archipel des îles Féroé (situé dans l'océan Atlantique nord), affranchie avec, à mon avis, une des plus belles séries EUROPA émises en 2020. Merci beaucoup Roland !
Pour rappel, le thème choisi par l'association PostEurop pour les timbres EUROPA 2020 est consacré aux anciennes routes postales et la poste des îles Féroé (Posta) a choisi d'illustrer le fait que pour pour distribuer le courrier dans ces îles, il fallait vaincre des montagnes escarpées et des détroits, au risque parfois d'y perdre la vie...
Ces 2 timbres, émis le 27 avril 2020, conçus par Anker eli Petersen et imprimés chacun (par Cartor Security Printing) en feuillet de 10 timbres, sont ludiques et rappellent le style des bandes dessinées, avec le trajet évoqué dans la partie gauche et une illustration du moyen de transport postal associé, dans la partie droite. 
Very happy to share with you this letter sent on August 27, 2020 from Tórshavn, the capital of this archipelago of the Faroe Islands (located in the North Atlantic Ocean), stamped with, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful EUROPA series issued in 2020. Thank you very much Roland!
As a reminder, the theme chosen by the PostEurop association for the EUROPA 2020 stamps is devoted to the ancient postal routes and the Faroe Islands Post (Posta) has chosen to illustrate the fact that in order to distribute mail in these islands, steep mountains had to be climbed and deceptive straits crossed, sometimes at the risk of losing your life ...
These two stamps, issued on April 27, 2020, designed by Anker eli Petersen and each printed (by Cartor Security Printing) in sheetlet of 10 stamps, are playful and recall the style of comics, with the route mentioned in the left part and an illustration of the associated means of postal transport, on the right.

 

Le timbre à gauche (17 DKK) est consacré à l'une des pires route postale reliant les villes de Klaksvík (île de Borðoy) à Viðareiði (île de Viðoy), qui obligeait à franchir l'un des massifs montagneux les plus impraticables de ces îles du nord de l"archipel.
Le 24 novembre 1887, Jacob Eliassen, le premier facteur de ces îles septentrionales, partit effectuer cette route postale mais il n'arriva jamais à destination, retrouvé mort après une chute sur le flanc escarpé de la montagne au nord du fjord de Árnafjørður (tracé en jaune sur la carte). Le tracé rouge sur cette même carte évoque la route empruntée quelques décennies plus tard par 2 facteurs de montagne, rescapés après une violente tempête de neige.
L'autre timbre (20 DKK) évoque la route postale entre Vestmanna (île de Streymoy) et l'île voisine de Vágar. Au début du siècle dernier, la distribution du courrier était assurée par le facteur Ólavur Olsen qui se rendait à pied de Vestmanna à Tórshavn pour récupérer le courrier, puis, de retour à Vestmanna, traversait le détroit à la rame pour emmener le courrier à destination de Vágar.
Ce détroit de Vestmannasund, réputé pour son courant puissant, était particulièrement difficile à traverser et de nombreux accidents ont eu lieu, comme le naufrage d'un bateau postal ("seksmannafar") en 1920 (les 4 passagers perdirent la vie).
The stamp on the left (17 DKK) is dedicated to one of the worst postal routes connecting the towns of Klaksvík (island of Borðoy) to Viðareiði (island of Viðoy), which required crossing one of the most impassable mountain ranges of these islands in the north of the archipelago.

On November 24, 1887, Jacob Eliassen, the first postman of these northern islands, set out on this postal route but he never reached his destination, found dead after a fall on the steep side of the mountain north of the Árnafjørður fjord (traced in yellow on the map). The red route on this same map evokes the route taken a few decades later by two mountain postmen, survivors after a violent snowstorm.

The other stamp (20 DKK) mentions the postal route between Vestmanna (island of Streymoy) and the neighboring island of Vágar. At the beginning of the last century, mail delivery was handled by the postman Ólavur Olsen who walked from Vestmanna to Tórshavn to collect the mail, then, back in Vestmanna, rowed across the strait to take the mail to its destination in Vágar.

This Straits of Vestmannasund, famous for its strong current, was particularly difficult to cross and many accidents took place, such as the sinking of a postal boat ("seksmannafar") in 1920 (the 4 passengers lost their lives).
