Cette année marque le 175ème anniversaire de l'émission du célèbre Penny Black, le 1er timbre-poste de l'histoire et de nombreuses administrations postales l'ont déjà commémoré en émettant des timbres spéciaux : Azerbaïdjan, Malte, Autriche, Isle de Man, Guernesey, Montserrat, Gibraltar, Togo...
La Royal Mail (logique !) et la poste malaisienne ont également émis des timbres représentant ce Penny Black ainsi que le Two Pence Blue.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of the issue of the famous Penny Black, the first postage stamp of history and many postal administrations have already commemorated it by issuing special stamps : Azerbaijan, Malta, Austria, Isle of Man, Guernsey, Montserrat, Gibraltar, Togo...
The Royal Mail (of course !) and the Malaysian Post have also issued stamps featuring this Penny Black as well as the Two Pence Blue.

Petit rappel historique : c'est en effet le 6 mai 1840 que le Royaume-Uni a émis ce timbre noir à 1 Penny représentant le profil de la reine Victoria. Ce timbre, introduit après une réforme postale initiée par Rowland Hill, permettait ainsi de ne plus faire payer (en fonction du poids de la lettre et non de la distance) le destinataire, mais uniquement l'expéditeur.
2 exemplaires du Penny Black et 2 exemplaires du Two Pence Blue (émis 2 jours après le Penny Black) figurent sur ce bloc-feuillet ci-dessus (chacun incluant le profil de la reine Elisabeth II en haut à droite), avec, dans la marge à droite, une évocation d'un atelier où les presses Jacob Perkins imprimaient ces premiers timbres.
A noter le TAD Premier Jour rouge émis dans la ville de Bath, mentionnant la date du 2 mai 1840...
As a reminder : it was actually on May 1840 that UK issued this black (One Penny) stamp depicting the profile of Queen Victoria. That stamp, introduced after a postal reform initiated by Rowland Hill, then allowed not to charge (depending on the weight of the letter, not the distance) the recipient, but only the sender.
Two copies of the Penny Black and two copies of the Two Pence Blue (issued two days after the Penny Black) are featured on this souvenir sheet above (each including the profile of Queen Elizabeth II at the top right), with, in the right margin, an evocation of a workshop where Jacob Perkins' presses printed these first stamps.
To note the red FDC cancellation issued in the city of Bath, referring to the date of May 2, 1840...
Même s'il fut émis officiellement le 6 mai 1840, la première utilisation sur une enveloppe du Penny Black fut en effet réalisée le 2 mai 1840 à Bath, le postier local ayant dérogé aux instructions des autorités quant à la date prescrite d'usage du timbre...
David m'avait envoyé en 2014 la carte postale ci-dessus montrant cette lettre historique du 2 mai 1840, le 1er document ayant été posté dans le monde en utilisant un timbre-poste (avec un cachet rond noir de Bath identique à celui figurant sur le pli Premier Jour du 6 mai 2015) !
Although it was officially issued on May 6, 1840, the first use of the Penny Black to frank an envelope indeed happened on May 2, 1840 in Bath, the local postman having not respected the instructions from the authorities about the official date of use of that stamp...
David had sent me in 2014 the postcard above showing this historic letter of May 2 1840, the first document having been posted in the world using a stamp (with a black round postmark from Bath, identical to the one used on the first day cover of May 6, 2015) !
La poste de Malaisie a également célébré ce 175ème anniversaire en émettant, le 30 avril 2015, un bloc-feuillet composé d'un timbre (3 RM) reproduisant également le Penny Black et le Two Pence Blue.

Le portrait de Rowland Hill ainsi que la médaille (oeuvre de William Wyon) frappée à l'occasion de la visite de la reine Victoria à la City de Londres en 1837, figurent dans les marges de ce bloc.
Le profil de la reine Victoria figurant sur ces 2 timbres historiques, a en effet été réalisé par Henry Corbould à partir de cette médaille.
A noter enfin le TAD Premier Jour spécial (évoquant les 1ères oblitérations en forme de croix de Malte utilisées sur ces timbres) et plusieurs timbres faisant partie de l'histoire postale de la Malaisie, illustrés sur cette enveloppe à gauche.
The Post of Malaysia also celebrated this 175th anniversary by issuing on April 30, 2015 a souvenir sheet consisting of one stamp (RM 3) also reproducing the Penny Black and the Two Pence Blue.

The portrait of Rowland Hill as well as the medal (by William Wyon) minted on the occasion of the visit of Queen Victoria to the City of London in 1837, appear in the margins of this sheet.
Queen Victoria's profile included on those two historic stamps, was actually drawn by Henry Corbould from this medal.
Finally, to note the special FDC cancellation (evoking the Maltese cross-shaped first postmarks used on these stamps) and several stamps being part of postal history of Malaysia, illustrated on this envelope on the left.
