Le roi Rama V ou Chulalongkorn, qui régna sur le royaume de Siam entre 1868 et 1910, est connu pour avoir fortement modernisé son pays et pour avoir introduit d'importantes mesures sociales (abolition de l'esclavage en 1895...), éducatives et économiques envers son peuple, ce qui lui valut d'être très aimé de son vivant et d'être encore l'objet aujourd'hui d'un culte pour beaucoup de thaïlandais.
Rama V ouvra également son pays sur le monde en effectuant pour la 1ère fois plusieurs voyages à l'étranger et en particulier en Europe à deux reprises en 1897 et en 1907.
C'est pendant son 1er voyage en 1897 que Rama V visita plusieurs pays dont la France, la Russie, l'Italie, le Royaume-Uni, la Suisse ou l'Autriche.
King Rama V or Chulalongkorn, who reigned on the Kingdom of Siam from 1868 to 1910, is known to have highly modernized his country and for having introduced important social (abolition of slavery in 1895...), educational and economic measures to his people, explaining why he was so beloved in his lifetime and why he is still today the subject of a cult for many Thai.
Rama V also opened his country to the world by doing for the first time several trips abroad, in particular in Europe on two occasions in 1897 and 1907.
It was during his first voyage in 1897 that Rama V visited several countries including France, Russia, Italy, United Kingdom, Switzerland or Austria.
En juillet 1897, Rama V était ainsi reçu à Saint-Pétersbourg par le Tsar Nicolas II, marquant le début des relations diplomatiques entre les 2 pays.
Le Siam, le seul pays d'Asie du sud-est à n'avoir jamais été officiellement colonisé, souhaitait que la Russie devienne son allié et soutienne le pays dans une région indochinoise marquée en particulier par les velléités d'expansion coloniale de la Grande-Bretagne ou de la France.
Le 3 juillet 2017, les administrations postales de Russie et de Thaïlande ont mis en circulation un timbre commun reproduisant la photographie de cette rencontre entre les 2 dirigeants en 1897, marquant le 120ème anniversaire des relations diplomatiques entre les 2 pays.
La version russe de ce timbre (conception : R. Komsa, tirage : 420000), imprimé dans un feuillet composé de 14 timbres + 1 vignette centrale, a été utilisée en 2 exemplaires sur la lettre ci-dessus envoyée le 5 juillet 2017 de Saint-Pétersbourg. Merci beaucoup Youri !
A noter qu'une émission commune Autriche-Thaïlande en 2012 commémorait également cette visite du roi Rama V à Vienne en 1897 et qu'un timbre suisse avait été émis en 1997 à l'occasion des 100 ans de la visite du roi de Siam dans ce pays (photo de la rencontre entre Rama V et le président Adolf Deucher).
In July 1897, Rama V was thus received in St. Petersburg by Tsar Nicholas II, marking the beginning of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Siam, the only Southeast Asian state to officially avoid European colonial rule, wanted Russia to become its ally and support the country in an Indochinese region marked in particular by the inclinations of colonial expansion by Great Britain or France.
On July 3, 2017, the postal administrations of Russia and Thailand put into circulation a joint stamp reproducing the photograph of this meeting between the two leaders in 1897, marking the 120th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The Russian version of that stamp (design : R. Komsa, print run: 420,000), printed in a sheetlet composed of 14 stamps + 1 central vignette, was used in two copies on the letter above sent on July 5, 2017 from Saint -Petersburg. Thank you very much Yuri!
To note that a joint issue between Austria and Thailand in 2012 also commemorated this visit of King Rama V to Vienna in 1897 and that a Swiss stamp was issued in 1997 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the visit of the King of Siam in this country (a photo of the meeting between Rama V and President Adolf Deucher).
