Timbre "Président Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (1926-2020)" sur FDC de France
Comme de coutume depuis 1971 en France après le décès d'un Président de la
République, un timbre a été émis le 19 novembre 2021 (vente générale le
22 novembre 2021), un an après la disparition de Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (1926-2020), Président de la République entre 1974 et 1981.
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing est donc le 5ème président de la Vème République à avoir droit à cet hommage philatélique, après le Général de Gaulle, George Pompidou, François Mitterrand et Jacques Chirac l'année dernière.
Ce
timbre (1,28€, tirage : 495000), dessiné et gravé par Sophie Beaujard, figure sur le pli Premier Jour ci-dessous, avec TAD de Chamalières (63).

As usual since 1971 in France after the death of a President of the Republic, a stamp was issued on November 19, 2021 (general sale on November 22, 2021), one year after the death of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (1926-2020), President of the Republic between 1974 and 1981.
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing is therefore the 5th President of the Fifth Republic to have this philatelic tribute, after General de Gaulle, George Pompidou, François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac last year.
This stamp (€1.28, print run: 495,000), designed and engraved by Sophie Beaujard, is present on the First Day Cover below, with postmark from Chamalières (63). Thank you very much Jean-Claude!
This stamp, representing a portrait of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing with a French flag in the background, was indeed unveiled by his son, Louis Giscard d'Estaing, current mayor of Chamalières.
Le TAD, également créé par Sophie Beaujard, a été conçu à partir d'éléments des armoiries officieuses de la République française (RF), en particulier un faisceau de licteur et des branches d'olivier (?).
Malheureusement, cette lettre a été ouverte avant d'arriver dans ma boîte postale et un vilain coup de crayon appliqué sur le timbre...
Le mandat de président de VGE a été marqué par sa volonté de modernisation de la société, de la démocratie et de responsabilisation des citoyens.
Il fut ensuite réélu à l'Assemblée nationale, fut président du conseil régional d'Auvergne. Fervent partisan de l'Union européenne, il fut aussi député européen puis président de la Convention sur l'avenir de l'Europe.
Il se retire en 2004 de la vie politique pour siéger au Conseil constitutionnel français, dont il est membre de droit en tant qu'ancien président de la République.
Auteur de plusieurs essais et romans, il est élu en 2003 à l'Académie française.
This town of Chamalières, of which Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (VGE) was also mayor from 1967 to 1974, is remembered when VGE declared his candidacy for the Presidency of the French Republic from the balcony of the town hall.
The postmark, also created by Sophie Beaujard, was designed from elements of the unofficial coat of arms of the French Republic (RF), in particular a lictor's fasces and olive branches (?).
Unfortunately, this letter was opened before arriving in my post box and a nasty pencil mark applied to the stamp...
VGE's mandate as president was marked by his desire to modernize society, democracy and empowerment of citizens.
He was then re-elected to the National Assembly, was president of the regional council of Auvergne. A fervent supporter of the European Union, he was also a Member of the European Parliament and then President of the Convention on the Future of Europe.
He retired from political life in 2004 to sit on the French Constitutional Council, of which he is a member by right as former President of the Republic.
Author of several essays and novels, he was elected in 2003 to the French Academy.
