Le 28 février 2022 (vente générale), la poste française a mis en circulation un timbre reproduisant une œuvre de l'artiste peintre Séraphine Louis (1864-1942) à l'occasion du 80ème anniversaire de sa disparition.
Ce timbre (2,86€, tirage : 612000) figure sur ce pli Premier Jour avec TAD de Senlis (60 - Oise), reproduisant la signature de l'artiste, du 25 février 2022. Merci beaucoup Axel !
Séraphine Louis, alors femme de ménage, commence à peindre au début du 20ème siècle. Indemne de culture artistique et autodidacte, son œuvre est ainsi qualifiée d'art brut ou d'art naïf.
Elle s'inspire d'images pieuses de tradition catholique et ses motifs décoratifs répétés inspirés du monde végétal, ses tableaux gorgés de lumière et de couleurs, sont parfois interprétés comme le reflet de son état psychique.
Le collectionneur et marchand d'art allemand Wilhelm Uhde, installé à Senlis, découvre ses peintures en 1912 et les expose, sortant "Séraphine de Senlis" de l'anonymat et révélant son talent au public.
On February 28, 2022 (general sale), the French Post put into circulation a stamp reproducing a work by the painter Séraphine Louis (1864-1942) on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of her death.
This stamp (€2.86, print run: 612,000) is present on this First Day Cover with postmark from Senlis (60 - Oise), reproducing the artist's signature, of February 25, 2022. Thank you very much Axel!
Séraphine Louis, then a cleaning lady, began to paint at the beginning of the 20th century. Unaffected by artistic culture and self-taught, her work is thus qualified as brut art or naive art.
She is inspired by pious images from the Catholic tradition and her repeated decorative motifs inspired by the plant world, her paintings bursting with light and color, are sometimes interpreted as a reflection of her psychic state.
The German collector and art dealer Wilhelm Uhde, based in Senlis, discovered her paintings in 1912 and exhibited them, taking "Séraphine de Senlis" out of anonymity and revealing her talent to the public.

 

Séraphine Louis meurt de faim dans un hôpital psychiatrique en 1942, dans l'indifférence générale.
Ce timbre redonne ainsi vie à cette femme à travers cette œuvre caractéristique intitulée "L'Arbre du Paradis" peinte vers 1930 et conservée dans le musée d'art et d'archéologie de Senlis.
Ses tableaux comportent presque tous, dans le quart inférieur, une zone qui semble représenter un autre ordre que le reste de l'image : les fruits et les fleurs continuent à s'épanouir dans cette région mais d'autres éléments, des herbes ou des feuilles plus sombres, invitent à interpréter cet espace comme une sorte de souterrain inconscient où tout s'enracine.
"L'Arbre du Paradis", comme la plupart de ses œuvres de cette période, se présente sous la forme d'une grande toile foisonnante au thème botanique et très colorée, sur la base d'une technique mixte complexe qui utilise la peinture industrielle dite Ripolin. On peut observer au centre de ce tableau, la présence d'un œil, entouré par le feuillage lumineux et coloré de l'arbre, élément assez récurrent des tableaux de cette artiste.

Séraphine Louis died of starvation in a psychiatric hospital in 1942, amid general indifference.

This stamp thus brings this woman back to life through this characteristic work entitled "Tree of Paradise" painted around 1930 and kept in the museum of art and archeology of Senlis.

Her paintings almost all include, in the lower quarter, an area which seems to represent another order than the rest of the image: the fruits and flowers continue to bloom in this region but other elements, herbs or darker leaves, invite us to interpret this space as a kind of unconscious underground where everything is rooted.

"Tree of Paradise", like most of her works from this period, is presented in the form of a large abundant canvas with a botanical theme and very colorful, on the basis of a complex mixed technique which uses industrial paint called Ripolin. One can observe in the center of this painting, the presence of an eye, surrounded by the luminous and colorful foliage of the tree, a fairly recurrent element in the paintings of this artist.
