Le 28 juillet 1980 à Moscou, dans un contexte de boycott des USA, l'italien Pietro Mennea (1952-2013) devenait champion olympique du 200 mètres, battant en finale, en 20 s 19, le favori britannique, Allan Wells.
Le 9 novembre 2020, la poste italienne a mis en circulation un timbre (tarif domestique "B" - 1,25€ pour un envoi jusqu'à 20g, tirage : 400000, conception : Fabio Abbati) à l'occasion du 40ème anniversaire de cette médaille d'or remportée par Pietro Mennea.
Ce timbre, représentant Mennea franchissant la ligne d'arrivée, a été utilisé au centre sur la lettre ci-dessous envoyée le 7 novembre 2024 depuis Rome. 
Lors de ces jeux olympiques de Moscou, l'Italie a terminé en 5ème position dans le classement des médailles avec 15 médailles dont 8 en or, l'URSS et la RDA remportant 321 médailles dont 127 en or (plus de 60% des titres olympiques).
On July 28, 1980, in Moscow, amid a US boycott, Italian Pietro Mennea (1952-2013) became the Olympic 200-meter champion, beating British favorite Allan Wells in the final in 20.19 seconds.
On November 9, 2020, the Italian Post issued a stamp (domestic rate "B" - €1.25 for items up to 20g, print run: 400,000, design: Fabio Abbati) to mark the 40th anniversary of Pietro Mennea's gold medal win.
This stamp, depicting Mennea crossing the finish line, was used in the center on the cover below, sent from Rome on November 7, 2024.
At these Moscow Olympic Games, Italy finished 5th in the medal standings with 15 medals, including 8 gold, while the USSR and the GDR won 321 medals, including 127 gold (more than 60% of the Olympic titles). 

Pietro Mennea a remporté 2 autres médailles olympiques (bronze, en 1972 et 1980), a été 3 fois champion d'Europe et a détenu le record du monde du 200 mètres (19 s 72) pendant 17 ans (c'est toujours le record d'Europe actuellement !).
Le timbre à droite (tarif "B zone 1" - 1,30€ pour un envoi jusqu'à 20g vers les pays européens et du bassin méditerranéen - tirage : 300000), émis le 11 août 2022, est consacré au championnat d'Europe de natation (36ème édition), organisé du 11 au 21 août 2022 à Rome (Foro Italico).
Avec 67 médailles (dont 24 en or), l'Italie a largement dominé cette compétition (devant la Grande-Bretagne et l'Ukraine), qui concernait la natation (en bassin et en eau libre) ainsi que la natation artistique et le plongeon.
Le 3ème timbre ci-dessus (tarif "B zone 1", tirage : 350010), conçu par Luca Leonardi, émis le 5 août 2023, rappelle que l'Italie organisait (avec 6 autres pays) cette année-là le championnat d'Europe masculin (demi-finales et finale à Rome) et féminin (huitièmes et quarts de finale à Florence) de volley-ball.
Chez les hommes, l'Italie a été battue en finale contre la Pologne, les italiennes perdant le match pour la 3ème place contre les Pays-Bas (la Turquie étant sacrée championne d'Europe pour la 1ère fois).
Pietro Mennea won two more Olympic medals (bronze, in 1972 and 1980), was a three-time European champion, and held the 200-meter world record (19.72 seconds) for 17 years (it still stands today in Europe!).
The stamp on the right (rate "B zone 1" - €1.30 for a shipment up to 20g to European and Mediterranean countries - print run: 300,000), issued on August 11, 2022, is dedicated to the 36th European Acquatics Championships, held from August 11 to 21, 2022, in Rome (Foro Italico).
With 67 medals (including 24 gold), Italy largely dominated this competition (ahead of Great Britain and Ukraine), which featured swimming (pool and open water) as well as artistic swimming and diving. The third stamp above (rate "B zone 1", print run: 350,010), designed by Luca Leonardi, issued on August 5, 2023, recalls that Italy hosted (along with six other countries) the European Volleyball Championship for men (semi-finals and final in Rome) and women (round of 16 and quarter-finals in Florence) that year.
In the men's competition, Italy lost to Poland in the final, with the Italian women losing the third-place match to the Netherlands (Turkey being crowned European champion for the first time).
