"International Committee of the Red Cross 150th anniversary" ATM stamp on postcard from Portugal

Timbre de distributeur "150 ans du Comité International de la Croix-Rouge" sur carte du Portugal

Plusieurs nombreuses administrations postales (Allemagne, Hong Kong, Serbie, Monaco, Lituanie, Indonésie...) ont émis des timbres en 2013 pour commémorer le 150ème anniversaire de la création du Comité International de la Croix-Rouge (CICR).
La poste portugaise CTT a quant à elle mis en circulation, le 1er novembre 2013, un timbre de distributeur avec mention du CICR et le slogan "150 ans d'action humanitaire".
4 types de timbres ont été en fait émis : Crouzet, Amiel, SMD et E-Post, correspondant à différents formats, machines et polices d'impression de la valeur faciale.
Sauf erreur, un exemplaire de type SMD (0,70€) a été utilisé sur cette carte postale envoyée le 7 mars 2014 depuis Funchal, chef-lieu de l'île de Madère. Merci beaucoup Luis !
Several postal administrations (Germany, Hong Kong, Serbia, Monaco, Lithuania, Indonesia ...) issued stamps in 2013 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
On 1 November 2013, the Portuguese Post CTT put into circulation an ATM stamp mentioning the ICRC and with the slogan "150 years of humanitarian action".
Four types of ATM stamps were actually issued: Crouzet, Amiel, SMD and E-Post, corresponding to different formats, machines and fonts for printing nominal value.
Unless I am mistaken, an SMD-type copy (€ 0.70) was used on this postcard sent on March 7, 2014 from Funchal, capital of the island of Madeira. Thank you very much Luis!

A noter cette oblitération mécanique illustrée (facteur) et son slogan "Sobrescritos normalizados evitam demoras e sobretaxas" ("Les enveloppes standardisées évitent les retards et les surtaxes").
Ce type d'oblitération est utilisée par la poste portugaise depuis 1974 !
Pour rappel, le Comité International de la Croix-Rouge (CICR) a été créé en 1863, il y a 150 ans (ce qui en fait la plus ancienne organisation humanitaire existante) sous l'impulsion d'Henry Dunant (Prix Nobel de la paix en 1901) et de Gustave Moynier entre autres.
Trois fois Prix Nobel de la paix, le CICR est une organisation impartiale, neutre et indépendante, avec une mission exclusivement humanitaire visant à protéger la vie et la dignité des victimes de conflits armés et d'autres situations de violence et à leur fournir une assistance.
To note this illustrated mechanical cancellation (postman) and its slogan "Sobrescritos normalizados evitam demoras e sobretaxas" ("Standardized envelopes avoid delays and surcharges").
This type of cancellation has been used by the Portuguese Post since 1974!

Un court message pour évoquer cette lettre envoyée en recommandé le 18 septembre 2019 depuis Nicosie (Lefkosia en grec) par le service philatélique de la poste chypriote.
Comme encore quelques administrations postales (Groenland, îles Féroé, Islande, Portugal...), la poste chypriote utilise encore de vrais timbres pour communiquer avec ses clients !
Le timbre à droite fait partie d'une jolie série (4 timbres, conception : Melani Efstathiadou) émise le 16 février 2017, consacrée à différentes fleurs sauvages endémiques (142 espèces et sous-espèces recensées), très rares et menacées, encore observées uniquement dans certaines parties isolées de l'île (y compris la partie administrée par la République turque de Chypre du Nord).
A short message to speak about this letter sent by registered mail on September 18, 2019 from Nicosia (Lefkosia in Greek) by the Cypriot Post Philatelic Service.
Like still some postal administrations (Greenland, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Portugal ...), the Cypriot Post still uses real stamps to communicate with its customers!
The stamp on the right is part of a nice series (4 stamps, design: Melani Efstathiadou) issued on February 16, 2017, devoted to different endemic wild flowers (142 listed species and subspecies), very rare and endangered, still observed only in isolated parts of the island (including the part administered by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus).

Le timbre ci-dessus (1€, tirage : 440000) représente une plante de la famille des tulipes, Tulipa cypria (floraison en mars-avril), poussant dans les cultures céréalières et les pâturages, limitées à la péninsule d'Akamas (nord-ouest de l'île) et dans des régions isolées de la partie turque (village de Myrtou et péninsule de Karpas).
A noter également ce 2ème timbre (0,02€, émission de 2019) avec mention "Refugee Stamp" (en grec, anglais et turc), réémis régulièrement, apposé en complément sur toutes les lettres et cartes postales postées sur l'île afin de financer un fond pour les réfugiés grecs ayant fui le nord de l'île après l'invasion turque de 1974.
The stamp above (€ 1.00, print run: 440,000) represents a plant of the tulip family, Tulipa cypria (flowering in March-April), growing in cereal fields and pastures, limited to the Akamas peninsula (north-west of the island) and in isolated regions of the Turkish side (Myrtou village and Karpas peninsula). 
To note also this 2nd stamp (€ 0.02, issue of 2019) with "Refugee Stamp" mention (in Greek, English and Turkish), reissued regularly, affixed in complement on all the letters and postcards mailed from the island in order to finance the fund for the Greek refugees who fled the north after the Turkish invasion in 1974.

Chemise hawaïenne Aloha et décorations de Noël sur lettre des USA

Le 19 janvier 2012, l'USPS a mis en circulation une jolie série (5 timbres) consacrée à la célèbre chemise Aloha, une chemise à manches courtes et col évasé, très colorée, originaire des îles Hawaï, qui a connu son heure de gloire après la 2ème guerre mondiale puis dans les années 1980.
Cette série, très populaire, a été émise à nouveau le 2 juin 2012 en carnet de 10 timbres autocollants (2 de chaque).
Un de ces timbres (32c) figure sur la lettre ci-dessous envoyée le 12 décembre 2012 (12/12/12 !) depuis la ville de Minot (Dakota du Nord), plus précisément de la Minot Air Force Base (Minot AFB), une importante base militaire de l'US Air Force et l'un des principaux dépôts d'armes nucléaires dans le pays. Merci beaucoup Ria !
On January 19, 2012, the USPS put into circulation a nice series (5 stamps) dedicated to the famous Aloha shirt, a short-sleeved shirt with flared collar, very colorful, from the Hawaiian Islands, which had its heyday after the 2nd world war then in the 1980s.
This very popular series was reissued on June 2, 2012 in a booklet of 10 self-adhesive stamps (2 of each).
One of these stamps (32c) was used on the cover below sent on December 12, 2012 (12/12/12!) from the city of Minot (North Dakota), more specifically from the Minot Air Force Base (Minot AFB), a major military base of the US Air Force and one of the main nuclear weapons depots in the country. Thank you very much Ria!

Deux des cinq chemises Aloha représentées dans cette série évoquent des surfeurs, une autre montre des poissons fossiles, des coquillages et des étoiles de mer, une autre montre une fleur tropicale et la 5ème (timbre ci-dessus) est consacré au Kilauea, un volcan (l'un des plus actifs dans le monde) situé à l'extrémité sud-est de la grande île d'Hawaï.
Les 2 autres timbres ci-dessus (tarif permanent domestique "Forever" - 0,55$ actuellement) font partie d'une série (4 timbres) émise le 13 octobre 2011 pour annoncer les festivités de Noël.
Ces 4 timbres autocollants (illustrations par Linda Fountain) représentent différentes décorations utilisées sur les arbres de Noël. Le même jour, un 5ème timbre reproduisant une madone peinte vers 1513 par Raphaël, "Vierge aux candélabres" (Walters Art Museum, Baltimore), a été émis.
L'USPS a émis ses premiers timbres consacrés à Noël en 1962 et cette série émise en 2011 était la première émise au tarif "Forever".
Two of the five Aloha shirts depicted in this series evoke surfers, another one shows fossil fish, shells and starfish, another one a tropical flower and the 5th (stamp above) is dedicated to Kilauea, a volcano (one of the most active in the world) located at the southeast end of the biggest island of Hawaii.
The other two stamps above (permanent domestic rate "Forever" - $ 0.55 currently) are part of a series (4 stamps) issued on October 13, 2011 to announce the Christmas festivities.
These 4 self-adhesive stamps (illustrations by Linda Fountain) represent different ornaments used on Christmas trees. On the same day, a 5th stamp reproducing a Madonna painted around 1513 by Raphael, "Madonna of the Candelabra" (Walters Art Museum, Baltimore), was issued.
The USPS issued its first Christmas stamps in 1962 and this series issued in 2011 was the first one issued at the "Forever" rate.

Merci beaucoup Nicolae pour cette intéressante enveloppe pré-timbrée mise en circulation le 13 mars 2020 par la poste de Moldavie, consacrée au poète, essayiste et traducteur Liviu Damian (1935-1986), à l'occasion du 85ème anniversaire (jour pour jour) de sa naissance.
Cette enveloppe (tirage : 10000, prix de vente : 3 L), conçue par Oleg Cojocari, a été envoyée le Premier Jour d'émission depuis Chișinău (MD-2012).
Liviu Damian a étudié à la Faculté d'histoire et de philologie de l'Université d'État de Moldavie entre 1955 et 1960 puis a travaillé pour le journal "Le jeune léniniste" avant d'être rédacteur en chef adjoint du magazine "Nistru" (1963-1968) et rédacteur en chef du Comité d'État pour l'édition, l'imprimerie et le commerce du livre (1968-1971). Entre 1971 à 1986, il a été membre de l'Union des écrivains de Moldavie.
Liviu Damian a publié ses premiers poèmes au début des années 1950. 
Thank you very much Nicolae for this interesting prepaid envelope put into circulation on March 13, 2020 by the Post of Moldova, dedicated to the poet, essayist and translator Liviu Damian (1935-1986), on the occasion of the 85th anniversary (day for day) of his birth.
This envelope (print run: 10,000, sale price: 3 L), designed by Oleg Cojocari, was sent on the First Day of issue from Chișinău (MD-2012).
Liviu Damian studied at the Faculty of History and Philology of the State University of Moldova between 1955 and 1960 then worked for the newspaper "The young Leninist" before being deputy editor of the magazine "Nistru" (1963-1968) and editor-in-chief of the State Committee for Publishing, Printing and the Book Trade (1968-1971). Between 1971 and 1986, he was a member of the Writers' Union of Moldova.
Liviu Damian published his first poems in the early 1950s.

Pour les jeunes lecteurs, Liviu Damian a écrit des livres créés avec le dévouement et l'amour des enfants, comme "Comoara" (1964), "De-a  baba-oarba" (1972) ou "Inima şi tunetul" (1981).
En 1988, une sélection posthume de poèmes pour enfants "Aştept un arici" ("J'attends un hérisson") a été éditée, dont la couverture figure sur l'illustration à gauche sur l'enveloppe ci-dessus, ainsi que 2 autres œuvres, "Din rană creşte ramul" ("La branche pousse hors de la plaie") et "Mândrie și răbdare" ("Fierté et patience").
Liviu Damian a également traduit de grands poètes comme P. Neruda, V. Solouhin, N. Hikmet ou I. Ziedonis.
En 2014, à l'initiative de l'Union des écrivains de Moldavie, le Festival "Liviu Damian et les énigmes du verbe" a été inauguré.
Nicolae a complété son affranchissement, pour atteindre le tarif en vigueur pour un envoi prioritaire de moins de 20g vers la France (11 L actuellement) avec 2 autres timbres.
Le timbre à gauche (1 rouble) fait partie de la 1ère série courante moldave (5 timbres) émise le 24 mai 1992, représentant les armoiries du pays. Les timbres de cette série ont été remis en circulation à partir du 1er février 2006 (1 rouble = 1 Leu).
Le timbre à 8,50 roubles (puis 8,50 L depuis le 1er février 2006) fait partie d'une série de 4 timbres émise le 20 juillet 1992, représentant un même motif d'avion supersonique, avec des couleurs différentes.
For young readers, Liviu Damian has written books created with the dedication and love of children, such as "Comoara" (1964), "De-a baba-oarba" (1972) or "Inima şi tunetul" (1981) .
In 1988, a posthumous selection of poems for children "Aştept un arici" ("I am waiting for a hedgehog") was published, the cover of which being featured in the illustration on the left on the envelope above, as well as two others works, "Din rană creşte ramul" ("The branch grows out of the wound") and "Mândrie și răbdare" ("Pride and patience").
Liviu Damian has also translated great poets like P. Neruda, V. Solouhin, N. Hikmet or I. Ziedonis.
In 2014, on the initiative of the Writers Union of Moldova, the Festival "Liviu Damian and the enigmas of the verb" was inaugurated.
Nicolae completed his postage, to reach the postal rate for a priority shipment (up to 20g) to France (11 L currently) with two other stamps.
The stamp on the left (1 ruble) is part of the first Moldovan definitive series (5 stamps) issued on May 24, 1992, representing the country's coat of arms. These stamps were put back into circulation from February 1, 2006 (1 ruble = 1 Leu). 
The 8.50-ruble stamp (then 8.50 L since February 1, 2006) is part of a series of 4 stamps issued on July 20, 1992, representing the same supersonic aircraft, with different colors. 
 

Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and Year of the Tiger stamps on cover from the USA

A noter ce timbre du Venezuela en bas à gauche, avec cachet du club philatélique de Carabobo, un état situé sur la côte nord-ouest du pays (capitale : Valencia).
Ce timbre (2 bolivars) fait partie d'un feuillet composé de 10 timbres différents, émis le 20 juin 1988 à l'occasion de la journée de l'armée (Día del Ejército), représentant différents uniformes militaires, comme cet uniforme (grade : Alférez) utilisé lors de parades militaires en 1988 ici.
Le timbre en haut à droite (44c, conception : Ethel Kessler) a été émis par l'USPS le 14 janvier 2010 pour célébrer la nouvelle année lunaire chinoise du tigre (du 14 février 2010 au 2 février 2011).
Ce timbre représente des fleurs de narcisses, considérées comme propices à tout moment de l'année, avec un tigre doré en haut à gauche (dessin découpé sur papier, par Clarence Lee).

To note this stamp from Venezuela in the lower left, with the cachet of the philatelic club of Carabobo, a state located on the northwest coast of the country (capital: Valencia).
This stamp (2 bolivars) is part of a sheet composed of 10 different stamps, issued on June 20, 1988 on the occasion of the Army Day (Día del Ejército), representing different military uniforms, like this uniform (rank : Alférez) used during military parades in 1988 here.
The stamp on the top right (44c, design: Ethel Kessler) was issued by the USPS on January 14, 2010 to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Tiger (from February 14, 2010 to February 2, 2011).
This stamp is featuring narcissus flowers, considered auspicious at any time of the year, with a golden tiger in the top left (intricate paper-cut design, by Clarence Lee).

L'USPS a émis ses premiers timbres consacrés à la nouvelle année lunaire chinoise en 1992 et le timbre ci-dessus appartient à une série débutée en 2008 intitulée "Celebrating Lunar New Year".
L'autre timbre à 44c ci-dessus, émis le 22 janvier 2010, est consacré aux jeux olympiques d'hiver organisés à Vancouver (Canada).
Conçu par Steven McCracken, ce timbre représente un athlète dans une épreuve de snowboard, un sport populaire aux USA, avec 5 médailles remportées lors de ces jeux dont 2 en or (Seth Wescott en snowboard cross et Shaun White en halfpipe).
Lors de ces jeux, l'équipe américaine a remporté 37 médailles (dont 9 en or) et terminé au 3ème rang des nations.
A noter que l'USPS n'a plus émis aucun timbre consacré aux jeux olympiques (été ou hiver) après ce timbre, refusant de payer les droits de licence imposés par le CIO pour reproduire les 5 anneaux olympiques ou le logo des jeux...
Le dernier timbre ci-dessus (10c), émis le 24 janvier 2003 puis réémis en 2006, est le 2ème timbre de l'USPS consacré au Design américain, représentant ici une horloge créée vers 1805 par un certain Willard, du Massachusetts. Le cadran est en fer peint et la caisse en acajou surmontée par un aigle en laiton.
The USPS issued its first stamps dedicated to the Chinese Lunar New Year in 1992 and the stamp above is from a series started in 2008 entitled "Celebrating Lunar New Year".
The other 44c stamp above, issued on January 22, 2010, is dedicated to the Winter Olympic games organized in Vancouver, Canada.
Designed by Steven McCracken, this stamp represents an athlete in a snowboarding event, a popular sport in the USA, with 5 medals won during these games including 2 in gold (Seth Wescott in snowboard cross and Shaun White in halfpipe).
During these games, the American team won 37 medals (including 9 in gold) and finished 3rd among the nations. 
To note that the USPS no longer issued any stamp dedicated to the Olympic games (summer or winter) after this stamp, refusing to pay the license fees imposed by the IOC to reproduce the 5 Olympic rings or the logo of the games... 
The last stamp above (10c), issued on January 24, 2003 then reissued in 2006, is the 2nd stamp of the USPS dedicated to American Design, here representing a clock designed around 1805 by a certain Willard, from Massachusetts. The dial is in painted iron and the case in mahogany crowned by a brass eagle.

"Birds around us" stamps on FDCs from Czech Republic

Avant 2 autres émissions en juin et septembre 2020 (2 timbres à chaque fois), la poste tchèque a mis en circulation, le 11 mars 2020, les 2 premiers timbres d'une très jolie série consacrée à différentes espèces d'oiseaux vivant autour de nous, en ville ou à la campagne.
Ces 2 timbres (tarifs "B" - envoi domestique standard jusqu'à 50g en mode économique - 19 CZK actuellement), conçus par Libuše et Jaromír Knotek, sont en particulier respectivement consacrés à des espèces de passereaux de la famille des fringillidés (pinson des arbres, chardonneret élégant, gros-bec casse-noyaux) et des paridés (mésanges).
J'ai eu la chance de recevoir les 2 FDCs officiels ci-dessous (tirage : 3000 chacun) concernant ces 2 timbres, avec TADs de Prague. Merci beaucoup Bret !
Before two other issues in June and September 2020 (2 stamps each time), the Czech Post released, on March 11, 2020, the first two stamps of a very nice series devoted to different species of birds living around us, in town or in the countryside.
These two stamps ("B" rates - standard domestic item up to 50g in economy service - 19 CZK currently), designed by Libuše and Jaromír Knotek, are in particular respectively devoted to passerine species of the fringillidae family (chaffinch, goldfinch, hawfinch) and paridae family (tits).
I was lucky enough to receive the two official FDCs below (print run: 3,000 each) regarding these two stamps, with postmarks from Prague. Thank you very much Bret!

Le premier timbre ci-dessus représente différentes espèces de mésanges appartenant à la famille des paridés ("Sýkorovití" en tchèque), de petits oiseaux actifs, au bec court, de forme assez trapue.
Les mésanges sont arboricoles, insectivores et granivores, le mâle et la femelle sont semblables. Elles nichent dans des trous d'arbres, mais utilisent souvent les nichoirs dans les jardins et sont très sociables.
Les 4 espèces représentées sur ce timbre : mésange nonnette (Poecile palustris), mésange huppée (Lophophanes cristatus), mésange charbonnière (Parus major) et mésange bleue (Cyanistes caeruleus).
The first stamp above is featuring different species of tits belonging to the paridae family ("Sýkorovití" in Czech), small active birds, with short beaks, of rather stocky shape.
Tits are arboreal, insectivorous and granivorous, the male and the female are similar. They nest in tree holes, but often use nest boxes in gardens and are very sociable.
The four species represented on this stamp: marsh tit (Poecile palustris), European crested tit (Lophophanes cristatus), great tit (Parus major) and Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus).

Le 2ème timbre ci-dessus est consacré à 3 oiseaux appartenant à la famille des fringillidés ("Pěnkavovití" en tchèque), constituée de plus de 52 genres et de près de 220 espèces.
Les 3 espèces représentées sur ce timbre : pinson des arbres (Fringilla coelebs), chardonneret élégant (Carduelis carduelis) et gros-bec casse-noyaux (Coccothraustes coccothraustes).
Les populations de passereaux (+ de 9000 espèces recensées dans le monde) sont en déclin dans toute l'Europe, les experts ayant constaté que leur nombre a diminué jusqu'à 90% en 20 ans...
The 2nd stamp above is dedicated to three birds belonging to the fringillidae family ("Pěnkavovití" in Czech), made up of more than 52 genera and nearly 220 species.
The 3 species depicted on this stamp: chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) and hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes).
The populations of passerines (more than 9,000 listed species in the world) are in decline in all Europe, experts having noted that their number decreased by 90% in 20 years ...

Le même jour, la poste tchèque a mis en circulation ces 2 splendides cartes maximum ci-dessus (tirage : 1950 chacun) concernant ces 2 timbres.
The same day, the Czech Post put into circulation these two splendid maxicards above (print run: 1,950 each) regarding these two stamps.
 

"Jewish Contribution to World Culture in the Modern Era" m/s on FDC from Israel

Bloc-feuillet "Contribution juive à la culture mondiale" sur FDC d'Israël

A partir de la fin du 18ème siècle (France post-Révolution et États-Unis), les juifs ont connu une émancipation leur permettant d'obtenir un statut juridique comparable à celui de tous les autres citoyens.
Un nombre toujours croissant de juifs a commencé à jouer un rôle important dans les sciences, les arts et la vie sociale et politique.
En 1998, la poste israélienne a débuté une série intitulée "Contribution juive à la culture mondiale dans la période moderne" (bloc-feuillet de 6 timbres rendant hommage à Albert Einstein ou Léon Blum en particulier) afin de souligner la nature multiforme de la contribution juive à la culture générale.
Le 18 avril 1999, un 2ème bloc-feuillet similaire (6 timbres) a été mis en circulation sur le même thème, présent sur cet intéressant FDC officiel ci-dessous, avec TAD de la ville de Rehovot, qui doit son essor à la science et à l'agriculture.
From the end of the 18th century (post-Revolution France and the United States), the Jews experienced an emancipation allowing them to obtain a legal status comparable to that of all other citizens.
An ever-increasing number of Jews began to play an important role in science, arts and social and political life.
In 1998, the Israeli Post started a series entitled "Jewish Contribution to World Culture in the Modern Era" (souvenir sheet of 6 stamps paying tribute to Albert Einstein or Léon Blum in particular) in order to highlight the multifaceted nature of Jewish contribution to general culture.
On April 18, 1999, a second similar souvenir sheet (6 stamps) was put into circulation on the same theme, present on this interesting official FDC below, with postmarks from the city of Rehovot, which owes its development to science and agriculture.

A noter que ce bloc-feuillet est numéroté (303411 ici, tirage total inconnu) et que les 6 timbres (0,90 shekel) comportent une vignette attenante (tab) incluant un portrait ainsi que les fonctions (en hébreu, anglais et arabe) et les dates de naissance et de mort des personnalités à l'honneur.
Une seule femme figure dans cette série, Rosa Luxembourg (1871-1919), qui fut une juive allemande, née polonaise de l'Empire russe, militante socialiste et communiste et une théoricienne marxiste, assassinée à Berlin pendant la Révolution allemande.

"19th Commonwealth Games - Delhi 2010" stamp set on FDC from India

Série "19èmes jeux du Commonwealth - Delhi 2010" sur FDC d'Inde

L'Inde et la ville de Delhi en particulier ont organisé pour la 1ère fois dans l'histoire du pays, la 19ème édition des jeux du Commonwealth, du 3 au 14 octobre 2010.
La poste indienne a mis en circulation plusieurs séries de timbres consacrées à cette compétition (1ère édition en 1930) et en particulier 4 timbres le 3 octobre 2010, jour de la cérémonie d'ouverture de ces jeux.
Ces 4 timbres (500p, tirage : 400000 chacun), conçus par Sankha Samantha, figurent sur le joli FDC officiel ci-dessous, avec TAD de Bangalore.
Le TAD représente la mascotte de ces jeux, Shera (un tigre du Bengale), lors du Queen's Baton (parcours dans les 71 pays participants uu travers d'un relais de 170000 kilomètres), l'équivalent du parcours de la flamme pour les jeux olympiques.
India and the city of Delhi in particular organized for the first time in the history of the country, the 19th edition of the Commonwealth Games, from October 3 to 14, 2010.
The Indian Post put ino circulation several series of stamps dedicated to this competition (1st edition in 1930) and in particular 4 stamps on October 3, 2010, the day of the opening ceremony of these games.
These 4 stamps (500p, print run: 400,000 each), designed by Sankha Samantha, are present on the nice official FDC below, with cancellations from Bangalore.
The postmark is featuring the mascot of these games, Shera (a Bengal tiger), during the Queen's Baton (a course in the 71 participating countries through a relay of 170,000 kilometers), the equivalent of the Olympic torch relay.

Les médailles remises lors de ces jeux du Commonwealth à Delhi sont représentées sur l'enveloppe ainsi que le logo de cette compétititon et sa devise : "Come out and play" ("Sortez et jouez").
Ce même logo, conçu à partir de l'Ashoka Chakra, symbole du pays (présent sur le drapeau national), est présent sur ces 4 timbres, représentant 4 des 21 sports au programme de ces jeux : badminton, tir à l'arc, hockey sur gazon et athlétisme.
La 19ème édition de ces jeux (organisés tous les 4 ans) à concerné près de 4500 athlètes venant des 53 pays membres du Commonwealth (tous sauf Fidji) mais aussi des 18 territoires associés (tous sauf Tokelau).
Lors de ces jeux à domicile, l'Inde a connu le meilleur résultat de son histoire avec 101 médailles remportées (en tir et en lutte en particulier) et une 2ème place au classement des nations, derrière l'Australie mais devant l'Angleterre.
The medals awarded during these Commonwealth Games in Delhi are represented on the envelope as well as the logo of this competition and its motto: "Come out and play".
This same logo, designed from the Ashoka Chakra, symbol of the country (present on the national flag), is present on these 4 stamps, depicting 4 of the 21 sports on the program of these games: badminton, archery, field hockey and athletics.
The 19th edition of these games (organized every 4 years) involved nearly 4,500 athletes coming from 53 Commonwealth member countries (all except Fiji) but also from the 18 associated territories (all except Tokelau).

Mais Selçuk est également connue pour son lieu de pèlerinage, la maison de la Vierge Marie ("Meryemana Evi" en turc), évoquée sur le TAD illustré ci-dessous. Selon la tradition, la Vierge Marie aurait été emmenée dans ce lieu par Jean l'évangéliste après la crucifixion du Christ. Elle y resta jusqu'à son Assomption.
Le timbre à gauche (bus, échangeur routier et 1er ou 2nd pont du Bosphore à Istanbul) fait partie d'une série de 5 timbres, émise le 27 mai 2009, commémorant le 70ème anniversaire de la création du ministère turc des transports et des communications.

But Selçuk is also well-known for its shrine, the House of the Virgin Mary ("Meryemana Evi" in Turkish), featured on the illustrated postmark below. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary was taken in this place by John the Evangelist after the crucifixion of the Christ. She remained there until her Assumption into heaven. 
The stamp on the left (bus, road interchange and 1st or 2nd Bosphorus bridge in Istanbul) is part of a series of 5 stamps, issued on May 27, 2009, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Communications.

L'autre timbre (0,60 livre turque) fait partie d'une très jolie série (4 timbres), émise le 30 mars 2007, consacrée aux civilisations d'Anatolie, le peuple des Hittites ici.
Avant de s'effondrer vers 1200 avant J.-C., le royaume des Hittites fut un des plus puissants du Moyen-Orient, occupant la région d'Anatolie actuelle, l'île de Chypre et une grande partie de la Syrie, souvent en conflit avec l'Egypte ou l'Assyrie.
L'histoire et la civilisation des Hittites ont été reconstituées par les chercheurs à partir de la fin du 19ème siècle grâce aux fouilles de sites anatoliens, en particulier Boğazkale où se trouvent les ruines de Hattusa, l'ancienne capitale du royaume. Des milliers de tablettes cunéiformes documentant plusieurs aspects de la vie politique, religieuse et économique du royaume hittite y ont été découvertes.
Le timbre ci-dessus représente un bas-relief sculpté dans une roche basaltique, situé dans la Chambre B du site archéologique de Yazılıkaya, situé au nord-est d'Hattusa, qui a servi peut-être au culte funéraire du roi Tudhaliya IV.
Ce bas-relief est intitulé "12 dieux du monde souterrain" ou "12 dieux porteurs de bêtes à sacrifier".
The other stamp (0.60 Turkish lira) is part of a very nice series (4 stamps), issued on March 30, 2007, dedicated to the Anatolian civilizations, the Hittites here.
Before collapsing around 1200 BC, the Hittite kingdom was one of the most powerful in the Middle East, occupying the region of present-day Anatolia, the island of Cyprus and much of Syria, often in conflict with Egypt or Assyria.
The history and civilization of the Hittites were reconstructed by researchers from the end of the 19th century thanks to the excavations of Anatolian sites, in particular Boğazkale where the remains of Hattusa, the ancient capital of the kingdom, are located. Thousands of cuneiform tablets documenting several aspects of the political, religious and economic life of the Hittite kingdom have been discovered there.
The stamp above represents a bas-relief carved in a basalt rock, located in the Room B of the archaeological site of Yazılıkaya, located northeast of Hattusa, which may have been used for the funeral worship of King Tudhaliya IV.
This bas-relief is entitled "12 gods of the Underworld" or "12 gods carrying beasts to sacrifice".

Heureux de partager avec vous cet intéressant document postal, envoyé le 24 novembre 2557 (2014) depuis la quartier Sam Sen Nai de Bangkok où est situé en particulier le musée philatélique.
En 1912, le roi Rama VI instaura l'ère bouddhiste dont le début fut fixé au 1er avril 543 avant JC, année du passage de Bouddha dans le Nirvana. Donc d'après le calendrier thaï, 2014 correspond à l'année 2557.
Ce document est à l'origine un entier postal (2 baht, date d'émission inconnue) évoquant la figure de proue (une tête de phénix ?) d'une des barges royales ("Suphannahong", reconstruite en 1911 sous le règne de Rama VI) utilisées lors des processions à Bangkok.
Le petit timbre en haut à gauche (15 baht) fait partie d'une série (10 timbres) émise le 10 mai 2011, consacrée aux plages les plus populaires de Thaïlande, Thale Waek ici.
Happy to share with you this interesting postal document, sent on November 24, 2557 (2014) from the Sam Sen Nai district of Bangkok where the philatelic museum is located in particular.
In 1912, King Rama VI established the Buddhist era whose beginning was set for April 1, 543 BC, the year of the passing of Buddha in Nirvana. So according to the Thai calendar, 2014 corresponds to the year 2557.
This document is originally a postal stationary (2 Baht, unknown date of issue) evoking the figurehead (a phoenix head?) of one of the Royal Barges ("Suphannahong" here, rebuilt in 1911 under the reign of Rama VI) used during processions in Bangkok.
The small stamp on the top left (15 Baht) is part of a series (10 stamps) issued on May 10, 2011, dedicated to the most popular beaches in Thailand, Thale Waek here.

Ce site de Thale Waek (province de Krabi, sud du pays) est célèbre pour ce banc de sable qui relie 2 petites îles, uniquement une partie de l'année.
Le timbre en bas à gauche (3 baht), émis le 28 mars 2003, est consacrée à la Croix-Rouge thaïlandaise de la jeunesse, fondée en 1922 par le prince Paribatra Sukhumbhand afin d'inciter les jeunes thaïlandais à être de bons citoyens et à offrir des services volontaires à la société.
Le dernier timbre ci-dessus (2 baht), émis le 5 décembre 1994, commémore le 120ème anniversaire de la création du Conseil d'état, en même temps que le Conseil privé (un corps de conseillers nommés par le roi), en 1874, à l'initiative du roi Rama V.
Ce Conseil d'état deviendra plus tard le conseil de ministres constituant le gouvernement national.
Le palais royal à Bangkok ainsi que les portraits des rois Rama V et Rama IX (le roi au pouvoir lors de l'émission du timbre) sont représentés sur ce timbre.

This site in Thale Waek (Krabi province, south of the country) is famous for this sandbank which links two small islands, only a part of the year.
The stamp on the lower left (3 Baht), issued on March 28, 2003, is dedicated to the Thai Red Cross Youth, founded in 1922 by Prince Paribatra Sukhumbhand to inculcate Thai youth to be good citizen and offering voluntary services to the society.
The last stamp above (2 Baht), issued on December 5, 1994, commemorates the 120th anniversary of the creation of the Council of State, together with the Privy Council (a body of councilors appointed by the king), in 1874 , on the initiative of King Rama V.
This Council of State later became the Council of Ministers constituting the national government.
The royal palace in Bangkok as well as the portraits of kings Rama V and Rama IX (the king in power when the stamp was issued) are featured on this stamp.

"Animals around the world" stamps on cover from Switzerland

Le 5 septembre 2019, la poste suisse a mis en circulation une série exotique (4 timbres) intitulée "Animaux du monde", conçue par Claude Kuhn (né en 1948), célèbre créateur d'affiches (de sport en particulier) mais aussi graphiste, directeur artistique et commissaire d'exposition au musée d'histoire naturelle de Berne.
Parmi ses très nombreuses distinctions, Claude Kuhn a été nommé "artiste sportif de l'année" en 1992.
Les 4 timbres de cette série révèlent son style caractéristique, efficace et couleurs percutantes.
Deux timbres (autocollants) de cette série ont été utilisés sur la lettre ci-dessous envoyée le 14 mars 2020 depuis la commune d'Orvin (canton de Berne). Merci beaucoup Tristan !
Le TAD représente l'église réformée Saint-Pierre (construite en 1638, complètement rénovée en 1722), monument historique depuis 1963 (en particulier à cause de sa charpente).
On September 5, 2019, the Swiss Post put into circulation an exotic series (4 stamps) entitled "Animals around the world", designed by Claude Kuhn (born in 1948), famous creator of posters (about sport in particular) but also graphic artist, art director and exhibition designer at the Natural History Museum in Bern.
Among his many distinctions, Claude Kuhn was crowned "sports artist of the year" in 1992.
The 4 stamps in this series reveal his characteristic style, effective with striking colors.
Two (self-adhesive) stamps from this series were used on the letter below sent on March 14, 2020 from the municipality of Orvin (canton of Bern). Thank you very much Tristan!
The postmark represents the Reformed St Peter Church (built in 1638, completely renovated in 1722), a historic monument since 1963 (in particular because of its wooden frame).

The issue of this series coincided with an exhibition in Bern, a project by Claude Kuhn and the Bern Zoological Park in particular, entitled "The animal in me", dealing with questions such as "How much animal is there in humans?",  "What makes animals different from us?" or "Who boasts the title of pride of creation?" ... interesting!

Le 29 novembre 2012, l'USPS avait mis en circulation une jolie série (6 timbres) à l'occasion du 100ème anniversaire de la naissance de Claudia Alta Taylor Johnson (1912-2007), connue sous le surnom de Lady Bird Johnson, qui fut la Première dame des États-Unis d'Amérique entre 1963 et 1969, en tant qu'épouse de Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973), 36ème président américain.
Lady Bird Johnson était alors seulement la 5ème Première dame (First Lady) à figurer sur un timbre américain.
Un des timbres autocollants de cette série (tarif permanent domestique Forever - 0,55$ actuellement) reproduisait le portrait officiel de Lady Bird Johnson à la Maison Blanche, peint en 1968 par Elizabeth Shoumatoff (1888-1980), connue pour avoir exécuté un portrait inachevé du président américain Franklin D. Roosevelt en 1945.

The 5 other stamps in this series, one of which being also used on this letter (row of blooming crab apple trees along a paved suburban road), with the slogan "Plant for more beautiful streets", reproduce engraved stamps issued in the 1960s, echoing these campaigns for planting trees in cities and parks across the country.
The 5 small stamps above (1c, illustration: Nancy Stahl), issued on June 1, 2012 (and reissued in 2015), represent a bobcat (Lynx rufus), a feline of the genus Lynx living in North America.
The last stamp (10c), issued on January 24, 2003 then reissued in 2006, is the 2nd stamp of the USPS dedicated to American Design, here representing a clock designed around 1805 by a certain Willard, from Massachusetts. The dial is in painted iron and the case in mahogany crowned by a brass eagle.

Joint souvenir sheet with Israel "25 years of diplomatic relations" on FDC from Vatican City

Bloc-feuillet commun avec Israël ''25 ans de relations diplomatiques" sur FDC du Vatican

Le 10 septembre 2019, les administrations postales de l'état de la Cité du Vatican et de l'état d'Israël ont mis en circulation un intéressant bloc-feuillet consacré au 25ème anniversaire de l'établissement de relations diplomatiques entre les 2 pays.
Le 30 décembre 1993, Israël et le Saint-Siège ont en effet signé à Jérusalem l'accord fondamental établissant des relations diplomatiques complètes entre les 2 pays, entré officiellement en vigueur en 1994.
Ce lien unique entre le seul état juif et l'église catholique universelle combine des éléments politiques et spirituels et ce bloc-feuillet commun représente l'église Saint-Pierre et la synagogue de Capharnaüm, symbolisant les relations et l'interaction uniques entre le judaïsme et le christianisme.
Ce bloc-feuillet figure sur cette lettre envoyée le 1er jour d'émission depuis la Cité du Vatican. Merci beaucoup Salvatore !
On September 10, 2019, the postal administrations of the state of the Vatican City and the state of Israel put into circulation an interesting souvenir sheet dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. 
On December 30, 1993, Israel and the Holy See indeed signed in Jerusalem the fundamental agreement establishing full diplomatic relations between the two countries, which officially entered into force in 1994. 
This unique link between the only Jewish state and the universal Catholic Church combines political and spiritual elements and this joint souvenir sheet represents the St. Peter's Church and the Synagogue of Capernaum, symbolizing the unique relationships and interaction between Judaism and Christianity.
This souvenir sheet was used on this letter sent on the first day of issue from the Vatican City. Thank you very much Salvatore!

This souvenir sheet (€ 1.15, print run: 60,000), printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, includes a round-shaped stamp depicting an aerial view of the House of Peter (having an octagonal shape), the margins including a wider view of this archaeological site of Capernaum, located on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee (northeast of Israel, between the Golan Heights and the Galilee), with the ruins of a monumental synagogue in the foreground (dating from the Byzantine era) and St. Peter's Basilica, built on a 4th century Byzantine church, itself built on the presumed archaeological remains of this House of Peter (domus ecclesiae) dating from the beginning of Christianity. 
The flags of the two countries are also present at the bottom left on this souvenir sheet.
On the occasion of the visits to the Holy Land of Popes Benedict XVI and Francis, joint stamps between the Vatican City and Israel had already been issued in 2010 and 2015 respectively.

Un grand merci à la Kyrgyz Express Post, le 2ème opérateur postal désigné (l'autre étant la poste kirghize) du Kirghizstan, pour cette jolie lettre envoyée en recommandé le 14 février 2020 depuis Bichkek, la capitale de ce petit pays d'Asie centrale.
Les 4 timbres utilisés font partie de 4 séries émises entre 2015 et 2019.
Le timbre en bas à droite (75 KGS, tirage : 10000) a été émis le le 2 septembre 2015 à l'occasion de l'Année internationale de la lumière et des technologies fondées sur la lumière.
J'aime beaucoup ce timbre représentant une image stylisée d'une décharge électrique traversant le globe terrestre, un vernis transparent étant appliqué sur une partie du timbre.

I really love this stamp depicting a stylized image of an electric discharge running through the Earth, a transparent varnish being applied to a part of the stamp.

La poste sud-africaine, comme plusieurs autres administrations postales d'Afrique australe, émet régulièrement des timbres consacrés à la faune locale et en particulier au Big five, un ensemble de 5 mammifères mis en avant par les autorités touristiques, le lion d'Afrique, le léopard d'Afrique, l'éléphant d'Afrique, le rhinocéros noir et le buffle d'Afrique.
À l'exception du buffle, ces espèces animales sont très menacées depuis le 20ème siècle...
Le timbre ci-dessous (tarif "carte postale par voir aérienne" - 9,95 rands actuellement) fait partie d'une série (carnet de 2 x 5 timbres + 1 bloc-feuillet de 5 timbres) émise le 9 mai 2014, consacrée à ce Big five.

Ce timbre autocollant (dentelure sur 3 côtés), extrait du carnet, représente un lion (Panthera leo), une espèce jadis présente dans toute l'Afrique du Sud, aujourd'hui principalement confinée (environ 3000 individus vivant à l'état sauvage) dans les zones protégées comme le parc national Kruger situé dans le nord-est du pays.
Les timbres de ce carnet reproduisent des illustrations conçues par Marius Trollip, lauréat d'un concours organisé par la poste sud-africaine en 2013.
Le 2ème prix de ce concours, Annetjie Esterhuizen, a créé les illustrations reproduites sur le bloc-feuillet.
This self-adhesive stamp (perforations on 3 sides only), extracted from the booklet, is featuring a lion (Panthera leo), a species formerly present in all of South Africa, today mainly confined (about 3,000 individuals living in the wild) in protected areas like the Kruger National Park, located in the northeast of the country.
The stamps in this booklet reproduce illustrations designed by Marius Trollip, winner of a competition organized by the South African Post in 2013.

Le président a décrit son pays comme "l'un des endroits les plus dangereux au monde pour une femme"...
Une femme est assassinée toutes les 3 heures en Afrique du Sud et la police enregistre, chaque jour, près de 110 plaintes pour viol.

Organized for 16 days, from November 25 to December 10, 2019, this campaign was supported by the President of the Republic Cyril Ramaphosa who himself denounced this bane, a "great shame for the country", often finding root in "sexist and patriarchal attitudes".
The president described his country as "one of the most dangerous places in the world for a woman" ...
A woman is murdered every 3 hours in South Africa and the police is recording nearly 110 complaints of rape every day.

Qui dit Pâques dit chocolat donc heureux de partager cette lettre envoyée le 14 août 2019 depuis Bruges (je n'ai pas réussi à déchiffrer précisément le nom de la commune sur l'oblitération mécanique...), affranchie avec un timbre évoquant une tablette de chocolat. Merci beaucoup François !
Comme en France, Suisse ou Allemagne, le chocolat est très apprécié en Belgique (plus de 500 chocolatiers y sont répertoriés), le 2ème pays exportateur dans le monde, derrière l'Allemagne.
L'Allemagne, la Belgique et la Suisse sont également les 3 pays où les habitants consomment le plus de chocolat (entre 10 et 11 kilos par an), la France n'étant que 5ème (7 à 8 kilos par an).

As in France, Switzerland or Germany, chocolate is very popular in Belgium (more than 500 chocolate makers are listed there), the 2nd exporting country in the world, behind Germany.
Germany, Belgium and Switzerland are also the 3 countries where the inhabitants consume the most chocolate (between 10 and 11 kilos per year), France being only 5th (7 to 8 kilos per year).

Le 11 mars 2020, la poste tchèque a mis en circulation un splendide bloc-feuillet (2 timbres + 1 vignette) consacré à l'architecte tchécoslovaque Josef Gočár (1880-1945), connu en particulier pour avoir établi le plan d'urbanisme de la ville de Hradec Králové, située au nord-est de la Bohême, au pied sud des monts des Géants.

On March 11, 2020, the Czech Post put into circulation a splendid souvenir sheet (2 stamps + 1 label) dedicated to Czechoslovak architect Josef Gočár (1880-1945), known in particular for having drawn up the urban plan of the town of Hradec Králové, located northeast of Bohemia, at the southern foot of the Giant Mountains.

Josef Gočár's works, dating from the Cubist and functionalist periods, are among the most important in modern Czech architecture.
He began studying at the School of Applied Arts in Prague in 1902 and the "Red Villa" of Josef Bink in Krucemburk is considered as his first independent work.

Ses premiers grands projets conçus en 1909-1910 comprenaient l'escalier de l'église de la Vierge Marie à Hradec Králové, le grand magasin Wenke à Jaroměř ou la structure en béton armé du réservoir d'eau de Lázně Bohdaneč.
Les années suivantes, Josef Gočár a créé les œuvres les plus importantes de son époque cubiste, comme la Maison de la Vierge Noire à Prague ou la "Maison du Spa" à Lázně Bohdaneč. En 1924, il est nommé professeur à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Prague et commence à travailler à Hradec Králové au début des années 1920.

His first major projects designed in 1909-1910 included the staircase of the Church of the Virgin Mary in Hradec Králové, the Wenke department store in Jaroměř, or the reinforced concrete structure of the water reservoir in Lázně Bohdaneč.
In the following years, he created the most important works of his Cubist era, such as the House of the Black Madonna in Prague or the Spa House in Lázně Bohdaneč. In 1924, he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and began working in Hradec Králové in the early 1920s.

In Hradec Králové, Josef Gočár designed the city plan, the flood protection plan, residential projects in the Elbe basin, school buildings (J.K. Tyl Grammar School), city center (Ulrich's Square ...).
The 2nd stamp above (23 CZK) evokes some of the architect's achievements in Hradec Králové, such as this J.K. Tyl Grammar School (with this statue "Victor" in the foreground, by the sculptor Jan Štursa) dating from 1925-1927, or the Church of the priest Ambrože, seat of the local diocese, built between 1926 and 1929.
The First Day cancellation above, put into circulation in Hradec Králové, is featuring a map of this city, located at the confluence of the Elbe and the Orlice river.
The engraving evokes an architectural project typical of Josef Gočár's work.

Entre 2000 et 2002, la poste française a mis en circulation une série de 6 feuillets (2 x 5 timbres différents chacun) intitulée "Le Siècle au fil du timbre", consacrés respectivement à 6 thèmes : sports, société, médias et communications, sciences et inventions, transport et photographies de la vie quotidienne.
4 des 5 timbres différents inclus dans le 1er feuillet "Sports" de cette série, émis le 17 avril 2000, figurent sur la lettre ci-dessous qui a transité par la plate-forme industrielle du courrier (PIC n° 25635A-02) de Gonesse Paris Nord. Merci beaucoup Pierre !
A noter que ces timbres comportent une double valeur faciale, en francs et en euros (3 F - 0,46€) et que les sujets ont été choisis par le public parmi des propositions (La Poste avait reçu plus de 700000 bulletins pour les deux premières thématiques, sports et société !).

Autre particularité concernant ce 1er feuillet "Sports", 2 personnalités vivantes sont nommément à l'honneur, l'américain Carl Lewis et le français Jean-Claude Killy, ce qui n'arrive jamais d'habitude (en dehors des chefs d'état au 19ème et 20ème siècle).
Carl Lewis est présent dans cette série pour rappeler qu'il fut le 1er athlète à courir le 100 mètres en moins de 10 secondes en 1984, le timbre consacré au skieur Jean-Claude Killy célébrant ses 3 médailles d'or remportées lors des jeux olympiques d'hiver de Grenoble en 1968.
Les 2 autres timbres ci-dessus évoquent d'autres exploits sportifs français, le titre de champion du monde de boxe (poids moyens) de Marcel Cerdan en 1948 et la victoire de l'équipe de France de football lors de la Coupe du monde organisée en France en 1998.
Le 5ème timbre de ce feuillet "Sports" évoque la 1ère traversée de l'Atlantique par Charles Lindbergh en 1927, à bord de son monoplan "Spirit of St. Louis".
Les six feuillets de cette série ont été retirés de la vente le 12 décembre 2003 donc ce 1er feuillet "Sports" a été disponible pendant plus de 3 ans et demi !
Another peculiarity concerning this first "Sports" sheetlet, two still living personalities are in the spotlight, the American Carl Lewis and the French Jean-Claude Killy, which never happens usually (apart from the heads of state in the 19th and 20th century).
Carl Lewis is present in this series to recall that he was the first athlete to run the 100 meters in less than 10 seconds in 1984, the stamp dedicated to the skier Jean-Claude Killy celebrating his 3 gold medals won at the Winter Olympic Games of Grenoble in 1968.
The two other stamps above evoke other French sport exploits, the title of world boxing champion (middleweight) of Marcel Cerdan in 1948 and the victory of the French football team at the FIFA World Cup held in France in 1998.
The 5th stamp of this "Sports" sheetlet is devoted to the first crossing of the Atlantic by Charles Lindbergh in 1927, aboard his monoplane "Spirit of St. Louis".
The six sheetlets in this series were withdrawn from sale on December 12, 2003, so this first "Sports" sheetlet has been available for more than 3 and a half years!
