Poland celebrates Joseph Conrad

Le 3 décembre dernier, la Poste polonaise a émis un timbre spécial pour commémorer les 150 ans de la naisssance de l'écrivain Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), Teodor Jozef Konrad Korzeniowski de son vrai nom.

C'est un écrivain polonais de langue anglaise mêlant roman maritime, philosophie et traditionalisme polonais. Il est considéré, tout comme Stevenson, comme le plus réputé des auteurs de romans d'aventure.
A 17 ans, il devient marin et s’embarque comme mousse sur un voilier français à Marseille, où il apprit le français. Il entrera plus tard dans la marine marchande britannique.
Promu capitaine en 1884, il se fit naturaliser Britannique. Conrad parlait avec une égale facilité le polonais, l’allemand, le français et l’anglais mais il décida d’écrire dans la langue de sa nouvelle patrie.
On December 3, the Polish Post has issued a special stamp to commemorate 150 years of the birth of writer Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski his real name.

He is a Polish-born English novelist mixing sea, philosophy and Polish traditionalism. He is considered, like Stevenson, as the most famous authors of adventure novels.
At 17, he became a seaman and embarked on a French sailboat in Marseille, where he learned French. He will join later in the British Merchant Marine.
Promoted to captain in 1884, he became a Briton citizen. Conrad spoke with equal ease Polish, German, French and English, but he decided to write in the language of his new homeland.

Il fut l'auteur d'une trentaine de romans et nouvelles, dont "Au coeur des ténèbres" qui inspira Francis Ford Coppola pour le scénario d'"Apocalypse Now".
Il commanda presque pour la dernière fois le trois-mâts "Otago" en 1888, dans d'effroyables conditions, qui lui inspira le roman "La ligne d'ombre" en 1917.
C'est ce bateau qui figure sur le timbre et à la gauche de son portrait sur le joli cachet spécial.
Quelques lignes en anglais d'une de ses oeuvres figurent également en arrière-plan sur le timbre. Je trouve ce timbre gravé splendide !! Bravo à M. Kopecki et Jedrysik, ils sont les dignes héritiers du regretté Slania...
Enfin, l'illustration à gauche sur la carte représente le monument en forme d'ancre, en son honneur, érigé à Gdynia au bord de la mer baltique.
He was the author of about thirty novels and short stories, including "Heart of darkness" that inspired Francis Ford Coppola for the screenplay of "Apocalypse Now".
He commanded almost for the last time on the three-master "Otago" in 1888, in appalling conditions, which inspired him the novel "The Shadow Line" in 1917.
This boat appears on the stamp and to the left of his portrait on the nice special postmark.
A few lines in English of one of his works also appear in the background on the stamp. I find this engraved stamp so beautiful ! Congratulations to Mr. Kopecki and Jedrysik. They can be proud heirs of the missed Slania...
Finally, the illustration at the left on the card represents the anchor-shaped monument, in his honor, built in Gdynia at the edge of the Baltic Sea.
