"75th Anniversary of the 1948 Agreement with Alderney" joint s/s on cover from Guernsey

Following the WWII Liberation of Alderney on May 16, 1945 the pre-war population was slow to return. A first post war States meeting was held in January 1946. By the end of 1946 less than 50% of the pre-war population had returned.
Property boundaries were difficult to define. By 1947 the States of Alderney had little sense of direction and no evident solutions or money to resolve the enormous problems which had to be confronted.
This led to the proposal that Guernsey take over responsibility for Alderney's most important public services.
These were termed "transferred services" because responsibility for them was transferred to Guernsey.  By virtue of the Alderney (Application of Legislation) Law, 1948 Guernsey acquired the right to legislate in all matters necessary to discharge the duties conferred upon it to run the transferred services.

On November 3, 2023, a mixed souvenir sheet was put into circulation, engraved by master Martin Mörck, consisting of a stamp with the mention Guernsey and a stamp with the mention Alderney (as a reminder, these stamps can however be used throughout the territory of the Bailiwick of Guernsey), dedicated to the 75th anniversary of these 1948 Agreement.
This souvenir sheet was used on the above cover sent on July 6, 2024 from Guernsey (no indication of a specific location on the postmark).
Each of the stamps (£2.00) represents the facade of the Court House of Alderney (left) and Guernsey (right). The respective flags of Alderney (red St. George's Cross on a white background with a gold lion in its center) and Guernsey (red St. George's Cross on a white background with a gold cross pattée in its center) can be seen flying in front of these two buildings.
Also noteworthy on this envelope is the application of special Guernsey Post's cachets on the occasion of the ParisPhilex stamp exhibition organized in Paris from May 30 to June 1, 2024.

Alderney is an island (2000 inhabitants) being part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, located 30 km northwest of Guernsey.
From 1983, specific stamps to Alderney were issued, valid however throughout the territory of the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

Established in 2002, the Alderney Wildlife Trust (AWT) is a conservation charity dedicated to protecting the island's wildlife and environment for years to come. The Trust cares for the marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments and works to protect the island's wildlife while helping people feel more in touch with nature.
The AWT Trust is one of 46 Wildlife Trusts working in the British Isles, managing over 130 hectares of land for wildlife in Alderney - quite substantial on an island of just 800 hectares.
The AWT also manages over 20km of footpath to ensure public access to the Island's countryside whilst minimising the impact on the wildlife that lives there.
The two stamps above illustrate some of the actions carried out on the island by the AWT: learning through nature in the community (£0.79) and planting woodland for the next generation (£1.35).

On February 5, 2015, the Guernsey Post put into circulation for Alderney a series of 6 stamps + 1 miniature sheet dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the publication of the novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", written by the British Lewis Carroll (1832-1898).
As a reminder, Alderney is an island (2000 inhabitants) being part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, located 30 km northwest of Guernsey. From 1983, specific stamps to Alderney were issued, valid however throughout the territory of the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
The miniature sheet (£ 3.00) in this series, designed by illustrator Keith Robinson and printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, was used on the letter below, sent on April 1, 2019 from Alderney.

This miniature sheet evokes in particular the scene of the tea party during which the Mad Hatter (on the left in the margin) explains to Alice that he and the March Hare are constantly taking tea because, when he tried to sing for the Red Queen, she condemned him to death because he was "beating time".
When Alice arrives, the tea party is animated by changes of position at the table, insoluble enigmas and stories without logic, all things that annoy Alice terribly ...
A third character, the dormant dormouse, is part of this emblematic scene of this novel.

"Peter Pan" souvenir sheet on cover from Alderney

On November 4, 2010, the Guernsey Post issued a series of 6 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet for Alderney, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937), better known as JM Barrie, a Scottish writer and playwright, famous for creating the character of Peter Pan.
As a reminder, Alderney is an island (2000 inhabitants) being part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, located 30 km northwest of Guernsey. From 1983, specific stamps to Alderney were issued, valid however throughout the territory of the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
The souvenir sheet (£ 3.00) of this series, designed by the graphic design studio "Two Degrees North" (based in Guernsey) and printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, was used to stamp the letter below, sent on April 1, 2019 from Alderney.

In 1902, JM Barrie became a major playwright, particularly with two of his plays triumphing on London stages (The Admirable Crichton and Quality Street).
The character of Peter Pan appeared for the first time in a fantasy novel entitled "The Little White Bird".
Barrie developed Peter Pan's character to create the play "Peter Pan; or, The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up" which premiered in London in 1904. Tinkerbell (featured in the left margin on this sheet) is also appearing in this play.
A novel version of Peter Pan, "Peter and Wendy" was published in 1911.
Peter Pan is featured on this souvenir sheet with Neverland in the background, this fictional island that is accessed by dreaming or flying, mainly accessible to children, according to the work of JM Barrie.
The illustrations in this series are based on Geraldine McCaughrean's 2006 book, "Peter Pan in Scarlet", a kind of modern sequel to the 1911 "Peter and Wendy".

"The Life of Beatrix Potter" souvenir sheet on cover from Alderney

On July 31, 2013, the Guernsey Post issued a series of 6 stamps for Alderney entitled "The Life of Beatrix Potter" to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the death of this English naturalist and writer, known primarily for her illustrated children's books, featuring animals.
These 6 stamps, designed by the Guernsey design agency "The Potting Shed" and printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, were also issued in the souvenir sheet used on the cover below, sent on April 1, 2019 from Alderney.
Alderney is an island (2000 inhabitants) being part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, located 30 km northwest of Guernsey.
From 1983, specific stamps to Alderney were issued, valid however throughout the territory of the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

This rather successful series depicts Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) in her region of Cumbria (north-western England) where she drew her imagination for writing, among other things, 23 tales between 1902 and 1930.
I love the first stamp of this series (40p) showing Beatrix Potter returning from a walk to her home village of Near Sawrey, with this rabbit in the foreground, probably a nod to her first tale "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" published in 1902 or "The Tale of Benjamin Bunny" published in 1904.
The other stamps feature Beatrix Potter, with Lake District landscapes in the background, in the presence of other animals (duck, mouse, dog, cat, rooster).
In her tales, Beatrix Potter exploits anthropomorphism, the attribution of animals to human characteristics (feelings, speech, walking on two feet, wearing clothes ...), even if they keep many of their animal characteristics, contrary to many other tales of the same type ...
