EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on cover from North Macedonia

On May 8, 2020, the North Macedonian Post put into circulation a stamp and a souvenir sheet as part of the EUROPA series, the theme of which this year was dedicated to ancient postal routes ("Стари поштенски рути" in Macedonian).
This stamp (144 MKD, print run: 8,000), printed in a sheetlet of 9 stamps, and this numbered souvenir sheet (144 MKD, print run: 5,000) were used on the cover below sent on October 31, 2023 from Skopje, the capital.
The EUROPA stamp is dedicated to a Roman bas-relief representing a carriage ("Journey to the underworld") walled up today in the church of the village of Maria Saal, Austria, a place of pilgrimage known for its St Mary's sanctuary.
This bas-relief, which seems to constitute the oldest representation of a postal transport (?), was discovered in a tomb in the ancient Roman city of Virunum (Carinthia, southern Austria).

To note that this same bas-relief is also featured on EUROPA 2020 stamps issued by Bosnia-Herzegovina (HP Mostar), Montenegro, Bulgaria and Slovenia.
I don't know exactly from which old document the souvenir sheet's stamp was designed but it seems to represent three (crowned?) postal messengers on horseback. The margins of this souvenir sheet reproduce part of the famous Peutinger Table (13th century), a copy of an old Roman map showing the main roads and towns of the Roman Empire, with a representation here of the historical region of Macedonia at the time.
Curiously, the EUROPA logo is not correct on the stamp and in the top margin of the souvenir sheet, the stylized letterbox (present on the isolated stamp) being missing...

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) souvenir sheet on FDC from Bosnia & Herzegovina (Sarajevo)

Happy to share with you this nice official FDC of May 8, 2020 with postmark from Sarajevo, concerning the EUROPA series (2 stamps), in the form of a souvenir sheet here, dedicated to the ancient postal routes ("Drevne poštanske rute" in Bosnian).
These two stamps were put into circulation by the Post of the Federation of BiH in Sarajevo, one of the three postal operators of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), together with the Post of Republika Srpska (Pošte Srpske) and the Croatian Post of Mostar (HP Mostar).
These two stamps (2.50 BAM, print run: 20,000 each), designed by Tamer Lučarević, were printed in the same sheetlet composed of 10 stamps (5 of each), in a booklet composed of 6 stamps (3 of each) as well as in the souvenir sheet (print run: 20,000) present on this envelope.

This series illustrates in particular the postal route between Sarajevo and Istanbul (Constantinople) at the time of the Ottoman Empire, operated by messenger pigeons.
These birds were indeed used for centuries, mainly to transmit military information, until the beginning of the 20th century when the telegraph was considered more reliable.
At the time of the Ottoman Empire, Sarajevo had its own messenger pigeon post, located in Bijela tabija (white fortress), part of the Vratnik Fortress (667 meters above sea level) which still dominates the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This postal link by messenger pigeons between Sarajevo and Constantinople was operated until 1860. A pigeon market existed until that year in the heart of Sarajevo.
The stamp above left shows a pigeon and an aerial view of Sarajevo and the Miljacka River, the other stamp depicting the arrival of this pigeon in Istanbul, with the Nuruosmaniye Mosque (mid-18th century) and its two minarets in the foreground.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) s/s on cover from Kazakhstan

Merci beaucoup Sergey !
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Kazakhstan Post had to suspend many stamp issues in 2020, postponing some at the very end of the year, such as the EUROPA souvenir sheet finally put into circulation on December 30, 2020.
As a reminder, the theme chosen by the PostEurop association for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2020 was devoted to the ancient postal routes ("Ежелгі пошта бағыттары" in Kazakh).
This souvenir sheet (800 KZT, print run: 10,000) including a trapezoidal-shaped stamp, designed by G. Altayeva, was used on the cover below sent by registered mail on May 18, 2021 from the city of Petropavlovsk (north of the country). Thank you very much Sergey!

To illustrate this theme of ancient postal routes, the Kazakh Post chose to evoke ancient sites located on the Silk Road, this ancient network of trade routes between Asia and Europe; gradually abandoned from the 15th century.
We imagine that this network also allowed the transport of messages and letters, on a Silk Road which crossed the southern part of the territory of current Kazakhstan, in particular Otrar (lower left on the stamp), a ghost town which was part of the Khwarazmian empire, and Turkestan and its Mausoleum of Khawaja Ahmed Yasawi (12th century), an important place of pilgrimage in Central Asia, depicted at the top right on the stamp.
Another mausoleum, that of the religious mystic Arystan Bab, built in the 14th century (rebuilt in the 18th then at the beginning of the 20th century) near the villages of Kogam and Otrartobe, is depicted at the bottom left in the margin of this souvenir sheet, the right side evoking the remains of the ancient city of Sauran, abandoned after the end of the Silk Road and the start of the various invasions of this region.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on cover from Albania

After missing the year 2019, the Albanian Post finally put into circulation on February 22, 2021 (due to Covid-19 pandemic), its EUROPA 2020 series (1 stamp, 1 souvenir sheet, 1 booklet) illustrating the theme of the ancient postal routes ("Rrugët e lashta postare" in Albanian).
The stamp (150 lekë, print run: 69,000) and the souvenir sheet (250 lekë, print run: 9,000) making up this pretty EUROPA series, designed by Artion Baboçi, were used to stamp this letter sent by registered mail on March 17, 2021 from Tirana, the capital. Thank you very much Sabri!
This series is devoted to an old Roman road, the Via Egnatia, which crossed the Balkan region, taking up an old route already used by the Persian, Greek or Macedonian armies.

This route was strategic, in particular for the transport of messages, between the west and the east of Europe, constituting a part of the Roman road connecting Rome to Constantinople.
After sea transport from Brundisium (the current city of Brindisi in Italy), the Via Egnatia began in the port of Dyrrachium (the current city of Durrës in Albania), with secondary branches to Buthrotum (Butrint) and Apollonia (Illyria), then head east through Thessaloniki then Constantinople.
The various postal stations implemented on this route are described on the famous Peutinger Table (13th century), a copy of an old Roman map showing the main roads and towns of the Roman Empire.
This stamp and souvenir sheet are featuring postal messengers (with postal horns) on foot and in a chariot drawn by a horse at the time of this Via Egnatia, presumably from the port of Dyrrachium (with a ship in the background) on the stamp.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) m/s on cover from Montenegro

This miniature sheet No 00029 was used to stamp the letter below sent on April 14, 2021 from Podgorica, the capital.

This stamp is featuring a Roman bas-relief representing a carriage ("Journey to the underworld") walled up today in the church of the village of Maria Saal, Austria, a place of pilgrimage known for its St Mary's sanctuary.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on cover from Greenland

On September 14, 2020, the Greenland Post put into circulation a very interesting series (2 stamps), illustrating the EUROPA theme chosen that year by the PostEurop organization, the ancient postal routes ("Allakkisarnermi aqqutitoqqat" in kalaallisut).
These two stamps, designed by the artist Robert Dam (born in 1964), each printed in a sheet of 10 gummed stamps and in a booklet made of 12 self-adhesive stamps (6 of each), are present on the nice letter below sent on January 19, 2021 from Tasiilaq. Thank you very much Roland!
This series reminds us that Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974), an aviation pioneer, carried out a mission to Greenland from July to August 1933 as part of a study to establish a commercial route between Newfoundland, Canada and Europe, via Greenland.

Nicknamed "Lone Eagle", the American Charles Lindbergh had entered the aviation legend by becoming the first pilot to connect, non-stop and alone, New York to Paris between May 20 and 21, 1927 in 33 hours and 30 minutes, aboard his "Spirit of Saint Louis" airplane.
During this expedition to Greenland, accompanied by his wife Anne, he made several air connections between different localities of the island, aboard a Lockheed Model 8 Sirius plane, nicknamed "Tingmissartoq" ("he who flies like a bird" ) by the Inuit.
In particular, it carried mail, during his last stop between Greenland and Iceland (then the mail was transported by boat to Denmark, via Bergen).
Cha6rles Lindbergh is thus considered to be the first "airborne postman" in the history of Greenland, what these two stamps remind us of, reproducing photographs from this period, kept at the Qaqortoq Museum in which a room has been reconstructed, a bedroom where Lindbergh and Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen slept.
They are pictured on the 16 DKK stamp, the other stamp (18 DKK) showing Lindbergh and his plane "Tingmissartoq", with a Greenland flag in the background.

EUROPA 2019 and EUROPA 2020 stamps on cover from Armenia

Thank you very much Aram for this nice letter sent on January 8, 2021 from Vanadzor, the 3rd city of Armenia (after Yerevan and Gyumri), franked with the EUROPA stamps issued respectively on May 21, 2019 (national birds) and July 3, 2020 (ancient postal routes)!
To note that these 2 stamps (350 drams, print run: 30,000 each) were both printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, in sheetlet of 10 stamps.
A barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) is pictured on the EUROPA 2019 stamp, designed by Ashkhen (Mila) Khandzratsyan, with an environment typical of Armenian flora in the background, an ensemble inspired by Armenian miniatures.
Around 380 bird species have been recorded in Armenia and the eagle (present on the country's coat of arms, along with a lion) is traditionally considered the national bird.

This bird is also depicted on the EUROPA series issued in 2019 by the Estonian Post.
This very nice Armenian stamp was designated the best EUROPA stamp in 2019 following the contest (public vote) organized by PostEurop.
The other stamp, designed by David Dovlatyan, also very pretty, shows a view of the old town of Gyumri, which was the first cultural and political center of Armenia in the 19th century and a milestone on many roads through the countries, economic or postal.
This stamp features in particular a part of the Vartanants Square with the Church of the Holy Saviour (built between 1858 and 1876), heavily damaged by the earthquake of 1988.
The development of this city began in the 19th century when it came under Russian control (it was renamed Alexandropol by Tsar Nicholas I) and was then considered the 3rd commercial and cultural center of the Caucasus, after Tbilisi and Baku.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on cover from Guernsey

On April 1, 2020, the Guernsey Post put into circulation a nice series of 6 stamps having for theme "Mail ships", a topic also chosen by the neighboring Jersey Post, designating the ships of private companies under contract carrying mail from the British Post abroad, from the end of the 18th century.
Among these 6 stamps, illustrated by Andrew Robinson, 2 were printed (in France by Cartor Security Printing) with the presence of the EUROPA logo, in sheetlet of 10 stamps (the case for the 6 stamps).

As a reminder, the theme chosen by PostEurop for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2020 was devoted to ancient postal routes.
The two stamps including this EUROPA logo were used on the cover below sent on December 3, 2020.

The first ships intended for postal transport served the island of Guernsey from 1794, then a dozen boats ensured this connection between Great Britain (from the towns of Southampton and Weymouth) and the Channel Islands (Jersey and Alderney also).
Among these boats, the "Ariadne" featured on the £ 0.68 stamp, a mixed propulsion vessel (sails and steam) commanded by a captain (J. Bazin) from Guernsey, having made its first connection to the Channel Islands in 1824. This ship was dismantled in 1852.
The other EUROPA stamp above (£ 0.85) is dedicated to the steamboat "Alberta", built in 1900 to replace the "Stella", whose maiden voyage between Southampton and Jersey took place on June 2, 1900.
Renowned as a fast vessel at the time, is was withdrawn from service in 1929 and sold to a Greek company in 1930 after completing 75,000 miles and carrying 700,000 passengers.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) s/s on cover from Jersey

On April 7, 2020, Jersey Post put into circulation a nice set of 6 stamps having for theme "Mail ships", designating the ships of private companies under contract carrying mail from the British Post abroad, from the end of the 18th century.
Among these 6 stamps, illustrated by the master of engraving Martin Mörck, 2 were printed (in France by Cartor Security Printing) with the presence of the EUROPA logo, in sheetlet of 10 stamps (the case for the 6 stamps) but also in a souvenir sheet.
As a reminder, the theme chosen by PostEurop for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2020 was devoted to the ancient postal routes.
It is this very pretty souvenir sheet, with mentions (including the profile of Queen Elizabeth II) printed with a special silver ink with metallic effect, which was used on the letter below sent on December 7, 2020.

The first ships intended for postal transport served the island of Jersey from 1794, then a dozen boats ensured this connection between Great Britain and the Channel Islands (Guernsey and Alderney also), as illustrated in the margin of this souvenir sheet (link with the English coastal towns of Southampton and Weymouth).
Among these ships, the "Cygnus" pictured on the £ 0.84 stamp above.
In 1857 a new company started to operate between Weymouth and the Channel Islands and France, the "Weymouth and Channel Islands Steam Packet Company", with two ships, the "Cygnus" and "Aquila". Built in 1854, the "Cygnus", a mixed propulsion ship (sails and steam), made its first stop in Jersey on April 11, 1857.
The other EUROPA stamp above (£ 1.05) is dedicated to the steamboat "Isle of Jersey", built in 1930, which operated between England and the Channel Islands between 1931 and 1959, with another similar ship, the "Isle of Guernsey". During World War II, it served as a naval hospital ship and was then sold in 1960, renamed "Lydda" and operated in Libya.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on FDCs from Azerbaijan

On July 28, 2020, Azermarka put into circulation its pretty EUROPA series, composed as usual of 2 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet, this year illustrating the theme of the ancient postal routes ("Qədim poçt marşrutları" in Azeri).
A big thank you Azar for sending by registered mail, on November 24, 2020 from Baku, these 2 official FDCs (print run: 300 each) concerning respectively the souvenir sheet (1.5 manat) and the 2 stamps (0.5 manat and 0.6 manat)!
I really love the design of this series created by Vugar Eyyubov and printed in France by Cartor Security Printing.

The souvenir sheet above (print run: 50,000) is devoted to the establishment in 1501 of the first postal routes by Shah Ismail I (1487-1524), who was Shah of Persia from 1501 to his death and founder of the Safavid dynasty.
The dynasty founded by Shah Ismail I for more than two centuries, was one of the greatest Persian empires and at its peak among the most powerful empires of its time, ruling all of present-day Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia, most of Georgia, North Caucasus, Iraq, Kuwait or Afghanistan ...
He was also a prolific poet who, under the pseudonym Khatai, greatly contributed to the literary development of the Azerbaijani language.
A messenger on horseback on this postal route is featured on this souvenir sheet, mingling the legs of the horse with fortifications built at the time to protect this route.

The 2 stamps of this series above (print run: 120,000 each) also represent postal messengers on horseback (called "gasid") with in the background, different cities (some of which are not located in Azerbaijan today) located from the 16th century on this postal network: Baku, Shamakhi and Tabriz (0.5 manat), Derbent, Shamakhi, Nakhchivan, Ganja and Yerevan (0.6 manat).
To note that these 2 stamps were also issued in the same booklet of 8 stamps (4 of each, imperforated on one side, print run: 20,000 booklets) and that imperforated versions of the whole series (booklet, s/s, stamps) were also put into circulation with a very limited print run.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp on cover from Spain

Merci beaucoup Luis !
To illustrate the EUROPA theme of the ancient postal routes ("antiguas rutas postales" in Spanish) chosen this year by PostEurop, the Spanish Post "Correos" put into circulation, on May 14, 2020, a stamp with a rather surprising design, associating an old dirt road on the left (with an old map of the postal network, on a yellow background) and a current tarmac road on the right (with an extract of a road map around the city of Cuenca).
This stamp (permanent rate "B" for a shipment in Europe - currently € 1.45, print run: 180,000), printed in a sheetlet consisting of 6 stamps (with an upper margin showing a rural postman on a bicycle), was used on this cover sent on November 13, 2020 from the city of Alicante. Thank you very much Luis!

In Spain, the oldest postal routes date back to the time of the Roman Empire, which took advantage of the earlier routes (cursus publicus) set up by the civilization of the Tartessos (southern Iberian Peninsula), the Phoenicians and the pre-Roman peoples.
In the Middle Ages, the poor circulation of correspondence failed to completely eliminate communications, the routes of which were recovered with the expansion of the Christian kingdoms and the development of commerce and cities at the end of this period.
During the Renaissance, Francisco de Tassis managed to articulate the first postal network at European level, which Philip the Handsome was able to take advantage of by appointing him postmaster, thus establishing one of the foundations of the Hispanic monarchy.
The road network then developed and improved (paved roads) from these postal routes, via reforms initiated by the Bourbon dynasty.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp on cover from Georgia

On October 30, 2020, the Georgian Post finally put its EUROPA stamp into circulation, illustrating the theme of the ancient postal routes this year.
While waiting for news from Albania and Kazakhstan, Georgia is thus the last postal administration to have issued a EUROPA stamp in 2020 ...
This stamp (2.70 GEL), printed in sheetlet of 8 stamps with the EUROPA logo in the margins, was used on this nice letter sent on November 12, 2020 from Tbilisi, the capital. Thank you very much Khatuna!
This stamp is interesting because it is dedicated to a philatelic rarity, the "Tiflis Unica" or "Tiflis Stamp", put into circulation on June 20, 1857, that is to say 6 months before the appearance of the first nation-wide stamp of the Russian Empire, used on mail between Tiflis (the old name of Tbilisi) and the little town of Kojori, located about 20km southwest of the capital.

This stamp reproduces a copy of this "Tiflis Stamp" (5 or 6 copies known to date) with the route of this postal link between Tbilisi and Kojori in the background. A postal messenger on horseback operating on this route from 1857 is depicted on the right on this stamp.
This stamp, put into circulation over a very short period of time, bears the words "TIFLIS", "CITY", "POST", "6 kop:" in Russian as well as the coat of arms of the province of Tiflis in the center.
Khatuna used 2 other stamps including one (1 GEL) part of a series (4 stamps) issued on June 14, 2008, dedicated to various Georgian personalities, to the writer, deputy and president of the Georgian Writers' Union Nodar Doumbadze (1928-1984) here.
The 3rd stamp above (0.50 GEL) is part of a souvenir sheet (5 stamps) issued on July 6, 2018, dedicated to stage decorator and costume designer Petre Otskheli (1907-1937). Attached to the modernist movement, his scenographic constructivism had a great influence in the art of the stage and decoration in Georgia. He was executed in 1937 during the Stalin's Great Purge.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamps on FDC from Isle of Man

The year 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower's departure from Plymouth, England, to discover the New World, now known as the United States of America.
This ship has become a cultural icon in the United States history and more than 30 million Americans can trace their ancestry back to the 102 passengers and 30 crew aboard the Mayflower when it arrived in Plymouth Bay (Massachusetts).
The passengers, English religious dissidents ("Pilgrim Fathers") and other Europeans seeking a place to freely practice their religion, founded the colony of Plymouth (which existed from 1620 to 1691), the second permanent English colony after Jamestown (Virginia) founded in 1607.
Among the crew of the Mayflower was the English captain Myles Standish (1584-1656), originating from the Isle of Man (and his wife Rose), recruited by the "Pilgrim Fathers" as military adviser for the defense of the colony of Plymouth.

This probably explains why the Isle of Man Post dedicated 6 stamps, issued on April 22, 2020, to the 400th anniversary of this Mayflower expedition to the New World in 1620.
Among these 6 stamps, designed by Ben Glazier of the London-based "Glazier Design" agency (from 19th century woodcuts), a stamp (permanent "EU" rate for a shipment up to 20g to Europe - currently £ 0.94) including the EUROPA logo (printed very discreetly at the bottom left ...).
This EUROPA stamp, showing some of the Mayflower pilgrims (the ship is pictured in the background) preparing to step ashore at Plymouth Rock for the first time, oddly illustrates the theme chosen by PostEurop for EUROPA stamps issued in 2020, the ancient postal routes.
This stamp is present in two copies on the nice official FDC above, with a specific postmark from Douglas including the EUROPA logo, the illustration on the envelope evoking the first peaceful contacts between settlers and Indians in March 1621, with in particular the Indian Samoset who served as their interpreter.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on cover from Serbia

As usual, the Serbian Post put into circulation, on May 5, 2020, its EUROPA set (2 stamps) this year devoted to the theme of the "ancient postal routes" ("Drevni poštanski putevi" in Serbian).
A big thank you Branislav for this nice cover, sent by registered mail on November 6, 2020 from the city of Sombor (north of the country), franked with these two EUROPA stamps!
To note that these two very pretty stamps (design: Boban Savić) were each printed in a sheetlet composed of 8 stamps + 1 central label representing respectively a carrier pigeon and an old post horn (see example on the left on this envelope).
The EUROPA logo, included on the stamps, also appears on these labels as well as in the upper margin of each sheetlet (see the 2 stamps below).
This series illustrates means of mail transport used over the centuries in the present territory of Serbia, in particular during the time of the Ottoman Empire when a network existed, made up of tatars (postal messengers on foot), a large number of horses, menzulanas (relay stations), inns and caravanserais.

In addition to tatars, proclamations and public orders were carried from the 17th century on by pedestrian messengers called "sahiyas", especially over shorter distances and over difficult terrain where these runners were faster than horses.
Sahiyas were hardy, armed people, appropriately dressed and wore jingle bells under the left knee as a sign of recognition (the tinkle announced their arrival in a populated area and helped them keep the rhythm while striding).
The stamp above on the left (74 dinars, print run: 50,000) represents one of these sahiyas, with the imposing fortress of Golubac (14th century) in the background.
After the Second Serbian Uprising against the Turks in 1815, when news had to be passed on foot and quickly, Prince Miloš I Obrenović used his tatars and later messengers who traveled on coaches, exploiting the existing network of menzulanas on four main roads (Belgrade-Radujevac, Belgrade-Aleksinac, Belgrade-Mokra Gora and Belgrade-Loznica).
This network also included the fast and safe transport of mail on board ships, on the Danube and the Sava rivers, as illustrated by the other EUROPA stamp above (108 dinars, print run: 50,000), with the fortress of Smederevo (or Belgrade?) in the background.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on cover from Kosovo

Since 2006 (the country had not yet declared its independence and was under the administration of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo), stamps with the same theme as the official EUROPA series are put into circulation every year by the Post of Kosovo (Posta e Kosovës).
Variably, these stamps mention (or not) the wording of that theme or the mention EUROPA, without including however the official EUROPA logo, Kosovo being not a member of the PostEurop association, managing these EUROPA stamps.

On June 10, 2020, 2 stamps and 1 souvenir sheet were issued, dedicated to the EUROPA 2020 theme, the ancient postal routes ("Rrugët e lashta postare" in Albanian).

The numbered souvenir sheet (€ 2.00) as well as the two stamps of this series (print run: 13,000 each) are present on the nice cover above sent by registered mail on October 26, 2020 from the town of Prizren, located in the south of the country. Thank you very much Sabri!
This series is not specifically devoted to a former postal route operated in present-day Kosovo. The 2 single stamps, designed by L. Ademi, respectively illustrate mail delivery by a messenger on board a 2-wheeled cart, pulled by a horse (€ 2.00) and a more recent delivery by a postman on foot (€ 1.00).
The souvenir sheet, designed by D. Luta, depicts various means of mail transport used over time, by sailboat, train or carrier pigeon, with a map of Europe in the background.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on cover from Estonia

The old Tartu-Võru road (south-east of the country), also known as the "postal route", has been called the most beautiful paved road in Estonia.
This road, which has followed the same route for centuries, is lined with trees, hedges, hiking trails and road markings (including a postal stagecoach wheel). It is an old trade route, also used in times of war, originally connecting the towns of Tartu, Kirumpää, Vastseliina and Pskov (National Road 2 today connects these towns, leading to Latvia and Russia).
From the middle of the 19th century, this route was traveled by postal stagecoaches and a network of postal stations was established along it, which is why it is called the historical "postitee" ("postal route" in Estonian).
On May 14, 2020, the Estonian Post released its EUROPA series (two stamps, € 1.90, print run: 25,000 each), designed by Triin Heimann and dedicated to this ancient postal route ("vanad postiteed") between Tartu and Võru.

These two EUROPA 2020 stamps were used on this pretty letter sent by registered mail on October 16, 2020 from the town of Laagri (north of the country). Thank you very much Patrik!
The stamp on the left shows a recent photo of the Varbuse postal station built on the side of this road in 1863, restored and converted into the Estonian Road Museum (Eesti Maanteemuuseum) in 2001.
The other stamp shows another postal station along this Tartu-Võru road, the Tille tavern at the beginning of the 20th century. This building no longer exists today.
I really love these two stamps with the presence of one of these road markings along this way, on the right.
Patrik used another stamp above (€ 0.65), issued on October 10, 2017, including a portrait of the current President of the Republic, Kersti Kaljulaid. This stamp is part of a series started in 2008, dedicated to former presidents or heads of government of the country, having ruled the country in the contemporary period or from 1918, following the 1st declaration of independence of the country.
The last stamp above (post horn, € 0.10), issued on January 18, 2017, is part of the last definitive series (design: Indrek Ilves) in circulation since 2016.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on FDC from Bosnia & Herzegovina (Pošte Srpske)

Happy to share with you this nice official FDC of September 3, 2020 with cancellation from Banja Luka, concerning the EUROPA series (2 stamps) dedicated this year to the ancient postal routes.
These 2 stamps were put into circulation by the Republika Srpska (Pošte Srpske), one of the 3 postal operators of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), with the Croatian Post of Mostar (HP Mostar) and the Post of the Federation of BiH in Sarajevo.
These EUROPA stamps (design: Tanja Kuruzovic) have been each issued in sheetlet (8 stamps + 1 label) as well as in a booklet of 4 stamps (2 stamps of each, imperforated on some sides). Each of these stamps has been printed in 20,000 copies (10,000 for the booklet).
I do not know exactly the origin of this old map, showing a priori old postal routes on the current territory of Bosnia-Herzegovina, reproduced on the envelope and on each stamp ...

According to documents from the Ottoman Empire, the first post offices in the territory of present-day Republika Srpska were opened in 1864, in the cities of Visegrad, Zvornik, Bijeljina, Brcko, Gradiska and Brod.
Under this Ottoman rule, there was no regular mail, no postal lines with a specific direction and time of departure and arrival of items. Mail was transported by Tatars on horseback (stamp at 1.80 BAM).
The main postal route was Travnik-Constantinople maintained by the Tatars via Sarajevo, Rogatica, Visegrad, Priboj, Kosovska Mitrovica and further to Skopje and the capital of the Ottoman Empire.
The postal link between Serbia and Bosnia started operating in 1851. When the first railway line in this part of the Ottoman Empire was built in 1878 (stamp at 2.70 BAM), connecting Banja Luka and Dobrljin, the consignments sent to Banja Luka and Gradiška were separated, while other letters were sent by rail to Prijedor, Novi Grad and Dobrljin.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on FDC from Bosnia & Herzegovina (HP Mostar)

Happy to share with you this nice official FDC of April 5, 2020 with postmark from Ljubuški, regarding the EUROPA series (2 stamps) dedicated this year to the ancient postal routes.
These 2 stamps were put into circulation by the Croatian Post of Mostar (HP Mostar), one of the 3 postal operators of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), with the Post of the Republika Srpska (Pošte Srpske) and the Post of the BiH Federation in Sarajevo.
These 2 stamps (3 BAM, print run: 10,000 each), designed by Marin Musa, were each issued in a sheetlet consisting of 8 stamps + 1 central label as well as in the same souvenir sheet (print run: 10,000 sheets).
This pretty series is dedicated to the ancient routes that linked the various Roman legions to Rome, also used for postal transport.
This Roman Messenger Service, initially called "vehiculatio" later "cursus publicus", was founded by Emperor Augustus between 27 and 20 BC, initially limited to civilian and military civil servants.

Under Emperor Septimius Severus (192-211), the cursus publicus was divided into two parts: the fast service (cursus velox) which operated horses and light carriages and the slow service (cursus claburalis), which used heavy wagons which could transport up to 500 kg of cargo.
One of the oldest representations of these carriages is a Roman bas-relief called "Journey to the Underworld" walled up today in the church of the village of Maria Saal, Austria, a place of pilgrimage known for its St Mary's sanctuary. This bas-relief, which seems to constitute the oldest representation of a postal transport, was discovered in a tomb in the ancient Roman city of Virunum (Carinthia, southern Austria).
This bas-relief is featured in the lower part on these 2 stamps as well as on the First Day cancellation.
To note that this same bas-relief is also depicted on EUROPA 2020 stamps issued by Slovenia, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Bulgaria.
These 2 stamps also show the obverse and the reverse of the same silver coin minted at the time of the Roman consul Lucius Saufeius (152 BC) respectively representing the head of goddess Roma and an allegory of Victoria driving an ancient chariot (biga) drawn by two horses.
This coin is on display in the Franciscan Museum of the Monastery of Saint Anthony in Humac, an area crossed in the 1st century AD by the very important military road connecting the towns of Salona (Solin), Bigeste (Ljubuški) and Narona (Vid).

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on FDC from Northern Cyprus

As a reminder, the postal administration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not a member of the European postal organization PostEurop (neither UPU) but some EUROPA stamps are however issued since 1975.
On September 10, 2020, a new set of 2 stamps (1.25 and 12.50 Turkish Liras) was issued, devoted this year to the theme of the ancient postal routes ("Eski Posta Rotaları").
These 2 stamps with identical designs (print run: 20,000 each), designed by Görel Korol Sönmezer, were printed in Cyprus, each in sheetlet consisting of 8 stamps.
To note that the date of issue is printed in the lower part of these 2 stamps, as usual.
Tolga was kind enough to send me by registered mail the nice First Day cover below regarding this EUROPA series, with postmark from Lefkoşa, the northern part of Nicosia, capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (recognized only by Turkey).

This EUROPA series is very close to the series issued this year by the Republic of Cyprus (southern part of the island), also depicting a map of Cyprus and evoking some of the old means of mail transport.
Between 1571 and 1878 (period of Ottoman occupation), the coastal town of Larnaca (south-eastern part of the island) was the country's trade center. The first postal office opened in Lefkosia (Nicosia) in 1871, the year in which a postal route between Larnaca and Lefkosia was created, with mail being transported by horses, donkeys or camels.
From 1878, Cyprus being under British rule, post offices opened in the principal cities of the country, the mail being transported by stagecoaches drawn by 6 horses (like the one represented on these 2 stamps).
Steamboats were also used for mail transport, such as the one depicted on these stamps, in particular a line operated from 1833 by the Austrian Lloyd (the largest shipping company in the Austro-Hungarian Empire) connecting Trieste in Beirut, via Istanbul and Larnaca.
An old postal manuscript cancellation (the mention KIBRIS in Arabic) is finally present on these 2 stamps.
