Artwork by Catalan sculptor Josep Viladomat on FDC from Andorra

Artworks made by Catalan sculptor Josep Viladomat i Massanas (1899-1989) have already been reproduced on several Andorran stamps in the past, particularly in 1966 (100 years of the New Reform) and 2002 (Nu sedent) on stamps issued by the French Post in the Principality.
Josep Viladomat, who settled in Andorra after the Spanish Civil War, is indeed one of the artists having marked the world of culture in the Principality in the 20th century, especially in the town of Escaldes-Engordany.
On May 6, 2016, a new stamp (€ 0.80, print run : 60,000, designed and engraved by Pierre Bara) was put into circulation, dedicated to the same sculptor through the Escaldes-Engordany Art Center (CAEE), featured on the right.
Thank you very much Olivier for this nice FDC regarding that stamp !

This Escaldes-Engordany Art Center, located in a typical granite house built between 1932 and 1934 (architect : Celestí Gusi) for monks, is a cultural space housing a collection of Romanesque art models of Andorra but but above all fifty works of Josep Viladomat, including the plaster sculpture depicted at the left on that stamp.
This statue is a prototype of "La República", a work in bronze (4.5 meters high) being part of the monument "La República (Homenaje a Pi i Margall)" erected in 1934 in the center of the Plaza de la República in Barcelona.
Josep Viladomat was the author of many realistic works of this type, female nudes inspired by Greek sculptors or French sculptor Aristide Maillol.

EUROPA 2016 (Think Green!) stamp set on FDC from Latvia

A big thank you Normunds for this nice official FDC (print run : 1,500) sent on May 9, 2016 (Europe Day) from Riga regarding the EUROPA set (2 stamps) issued by the Latvian Post (Latvijas Pasts), devoted this year to the theme of the preservation of environment around the slogan "Think Green!" ("Domā zaļi!" in Latvian).
As for the EUROPA series issued in 2015 (old toys), the artist Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja designed this FDC as well as the stamp below to the right.
These two stamps (€ 0.78, print run : 200,000 each) correspond to the sending of a regular Class A letter to the European Union and have the distinction of having been printed each in a sheetlet of 8 stamps (4 tête-bêche pairs).

A little squirrel ("Vāvere") is staged on the illustration of this envelope as well as on the stamp designed by Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja, with a focus on the importance of upporting waste sorting and recycling (we can notice the recycling's symbol, consisting of 3 arrows in a triangle, on the envelope and in multiple copies on the stamp).
The second stamp was designed from the common drawing (design : Doxia Sergidou / Cyprus Post) chosen by PostEurop to celebrate this year the 60th anniversary of the first CEPT- EUROPA stamps, expressing the world's aspiration for a better and cleaner environment.

Portugal-Brazil joint stamp issue : Lubrapex 2016 stamp exhibition

Merci beaucoup Luis !
After São Paulo in 2012, the International Philatelic Exhibition LUBRAPEX 2016 (22th edition) was organized in Portugal from 26 April to 1 May 2016, in the town of Viana do Castelo (country's north-west coast).
After a Brazil-Portugal joint stamp issue in 2012 dedicated to great poets (Portuguese Fernando Pessoa and Brazilian João da Cruz e Sousa), a new joint issue between the two countries was put into circulation on April 26, 2016 for this exhibition, this time featuring ethnological objects (ornaments).
The two stamps (€ 0.80, print run : 115,000 each) issued by Portugal were used to frank the nice letter below sent on May 3, 2016 from the city of Braga. Thank you very much Luis !

This 22nd edition of LUBRAPEX coincided with the 50th anniversary of the creation of this stamp exhibition (the first edition took place in 1966 in Rio de Janeiro) initially involving postal operators and collectors from Brazil and Portugal and, since 1992, other Portuguese-speaking countries. To note that this LUBRAPEX exhibition is the oldest bilateral philatelic exhibition (Brazil-Portugal) organized in the world.
LUBRAPEX 2016's logo is featured on these two stamps, inspired by a pendant filigree crafted from golden silver and enamel (Portuguese Popular Art Museum), a characteristic jewel from this region of Viana do Castelo.
The other stamp shows a tribal headdress from Brazil, made of feathers, cotton and vegetables (Portuguese National Ethnology Museum).
To note that the Brazilian Post issued these two same stamps in a souvenir sheet and the Portuguese Post also put into circulation a sheetlet consisting of 7 different stamps and 1 label, depicting similar objects originating from seven other Portuguese-speaking countries.

Printing error on new Czech "Charles IV" m/s : KAROLUS QUARTUS or KAROLUS QUATRUS ?

Merci beaucoup Bret !
On May 4, 2016, the Czech Post has released a new miniature sheet commemorating the 700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV (1316-1378), King of Bohemia and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
This souvenir sheet (initial print run : 54,500), consisting of one stamp (54 CZK) and two vignettes, is paying tribute to one of the greatest rulers in the history of the country, having left a spiritual and cultural heritage still present today, through the old Prague in particular.
It is that souvenir sheet, designed by Jan Kavan and partially engraved by Miloš Ondráček, which was used to frank the beautiful letter below, sent by registered mail from Prague the first day of issue. Thank you very much Bret !

This miniature sheet, including the arms of the Holy Roman Empire (bicephalous eagle) and Bohemia (Lion) in the upper margin, reminds some of the achievements of Charles IV, in particular the founding of Charles University in Prague (in 1348) through the main vignette showing the King symbolically handing the deed of foundation to St. Wenceslas (after a work of Jindřich Parléř, St. Wenceslas chapel in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague).
It is indeed Charles IV who designated St. Wenceslas, the national hero who was Duke of Bohemia in the 10th century, Saint Patron of Bohemia, of Czech Republic today.
The margins of this miniature sheet also refer to the construction of the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, from 1344 on the initiative of Charles IV, through these elements of Gothic architecture.

Some elements of Charles Bridge as well as a street plan evoking the ambitious project of the Prague's New Town are also featured on that sheet, with a representation of two musicians muses, symbolizing the first golden age of Bohemia under the reign of Charles IV, a great patron of the arts and letters.
The small vignette in the center of that sheet finally refers to the support of Charles IV to agriculture, through the creation of vines or ponds with the introduction of new fish species.
The mention "Charles IV - Father of Homeland" ("Karolus Quartus - Pater Patriae") in Latin is finally present in the bottom of this miniature sheet.
The Czech Post has also put into circulation the numbered commemorative sheet (Pamětní list) above (print run : 3500) including that sheet's stamp and two vignettes, with the FDC cancellation from Prague.

A few days after this issue, some people quickly noticed that the mention "Charles IV" in Latin (at the bottom left) was wrong on this souvenir sheet (as well as on the commemorative sheet mentioned above) with the words "KAROLUS QUATRUS" instead of "KAROLUS QUARTUS" !
The Czech Post then decided to reprint 35,000 miniature sheets with the revised mention "KAROLUS QUARTUS", unsold initial sheets being withdrawn from circulation (stamps, unaffected by this error will be extracted and used in another way for philatelic purposes).
The two versions of this souvenir sheet will be however mentioned in the POFIS catalogue of Czech stamps, with a different identification.
Bret was kind enough to send me the two versions of this souvenir sheet above !

The revised version of this souvenir sheet was used on this 2nd letter above sent by registered mail on May 18, 2016 from Prague, with a special postmark (design : Jan Kavan) put into circulation from 14 to 20 May 2016 at the main post office of Prague 1. Thanks again Bret !
This postmark, featuring the King's crown, includes the mention "700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV" ("700. výročí narození Karla IV").

Bret was finally kind enough to send me, as usual, the official FDC above (print run : 4200, sale price : 68 CZK) as well as the First Day Sheet below, regarding the stamp of this souvenir sheet.

UEFA Euro 2008 and tribute to actress Romy Schneider in Austria

On the occasion of the philatelic exhibition WIPA08 in Vienna, the Austrian Post had issued, on September 21, 2008, a stamp (€ 1.00) paying tribute to the actress Romy Schneider (1938-1982).
That stamp is featuring a beautiful portrait of Romy Schneider (born in Vienna), created by pop art artist Andreas Reimann, chosen to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the birth of this actress, the eternal Sissi, so beloved in France where she performed in many movies, including "The important thing is to love" and "A simple story" for which she received the French César Award for best actress.
To note that postal administrations of Gibraltar, Germany and France (among others) have also issued stamps in her honor.

It is that stamp which was used on the left on this nice cover sent on May 6, 2016 from the small town of Sankt Jakob im Rosental (south of the country, near the Slovenian border). Thank you very much Lars !
Another link with France through the 2nd stamp above (€ 0.55) put into circulation on May 16, 2008 at the occasion of the UEFA European Football Championship, held from 7 to 29 June 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.
Austrian Post (contrary to Swiss Post) issued many stamps dedicated to this competition, in particular 16 stamps depicting this same child's face with the colors of the flags of the 16 teams qualified. Two sheetlets (8 stamps each) were issued.

EUROPA 2016 (Think Green!) stamp set on FDC from Malta

As usual, the Malta Post has chosen May 9, 2016 (Europe Day) to issue its EUROPA stamp set, devoted this year to the ecology around the slogan "Think Green!".
It is that set of two stamps appearing on the official illustrated FDC below with cancellations from the city of Marsa (located in the inner area of the Grand Harbour). Thank you very much Silvan !
These two stamps, including the one reproducing the common design chosen by PostEurop to celebrate this year the 60th anniversary of the first EUROPA stamps, have been issued each in a numbered sheet consisting of 11 stamps + 1 vignette, including the EUROPA logo as well as the mention "Think Green" preceded by a green bulb (see the illustration on the left on the envelope).

The € 0.59 stamp (print run : 52,800), also issued in a booklet of 5 stamps, therefore incorporates this joint drawing (design : Doxia Sergidou) proposed by the Cyprus Post, expressing  the world's aspiration for a better and cleaner environment.
The 2nd stamp (€ 2.19, print run : 35,200) was designed by artist Sean Cini, inspired by the design of the joint stamp, with a gray side and a green side, transposed in a Maltese context by highlighting the importance of engendering a "green mentality" (with these two opposite heads).
Inside the green head, as well as on the FDC cancellation, is featured the Ta 'Kola windmill located in Xagħra, on the island of Gozo, built around 1725 and rebuilt in the 1780s.
Symbolizing a type of renewable energy, this windmill is today visited as a museum and is one of the few surviving windmills in the country dating from the Knights' period.

Alan Shepard, the first American into space, celebrated in Moldova

After Yuri Gagarin with a special postmark put into circulation on April 12, 2016, the Post of Moldova ("Poşta Moldovei") issued on May 5, 2016, another cancellation this time devoted to the 55th anniversary of the first manned space flight by US astronaut Alan B. Shepard (1923-1998).
It is that postmark from Chișinău (MD-2012) which was applied to the special envelope below, published by the Post of Moldova in 2015 (No. 7/2015, print run : 5000, design: Corina Levco) having space for theme.

I've already widely written on this blog about that first American astronaut in space's feat, about one month after Gagarin, in particular through another cancellation put into circulation on May 5, 2011 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this flight.
The two stamps above, with a central vignette, are part of the souvenir sheet issued on April 9, 2011 (4 stamps + 2 vignettes) dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first manned space flight, to the first four men sent into space in 1961 specifically, including Yuri Gagarin and Alan Shepard here.
Alan Shepard (L 8.50 stamp) was sent into space on May 5, 1961 aboard a Mercury-Redstone 3 capsule, during a 15 minutes' sub-orbital flight.
Alan Shepard was also later the commander of the Apollo 14 mission that landed on the Moon on February 5, 1971.

The Union of Philatelists of the Republic of Moldova (UFRM - Uniunea Filateliștilor din Republica Moldova) also edited the special numbered envelope above (design : S. Tcaciov, print run : 100) devoted to this 55th anniversary of Shepard's flight. Thank you very much Sergei !
During my stay in Chișinău, I managed to buy this postcard below published by the Post of Moldova in 2014 (No. 6/2014, design : Vitaliu Pogolşa, print run : 500) devoted to Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite orbiting the Earth ("Primul satelit artificial al Pămîntului"), launched by the USSR in 1957, marking the beginning of the Space Race.

Bicentenary of steam navigation in France

On 22 and 23 April 2016, the French Post has released (preview sale) a new stamp (€ 1.25, print run : 1,000,320) dedicated to the bicentenary of steam navigation and to its inventor, the Marquis de Jouffroy d'Abbans (1751-1832).
This preview sale took place in Paris (Carré d'Encre) but also in Roches-Bettaincourt (52), his hometown, and Baume-les-Dames (25) where his first steam engine prototype operating oars, called "Palmipède" was tested on the Doubs river.
A big thank you Joël for this first day cover from Paris regarding that stamp, with a postmark designed by Claude Perchat, inspired by the statue of Jouffroy Abbans built in 1884 in Besançon (cast in 1942).

On July 15, 1783, two years after having created his company in Lyon to exploit his invention, Jouffroy Abbans made a spectacular public demonstration (10,000 spectators) sailing on the Saône river (between the Archbishop of Lyon and the Barbe island) on board of his new boat, "Pyroscaphe" (46 m long and 4.6 m wide, with side paddle wheels).
It is that scene which appears to the left, next to the portrait of Jouffroy Abbans, on that stamp created and engraved by Pierre Albuisson.
This feat changed the world of transport and amplified the effects of the industrial revolution of the 19th century.
Forced into exile during the French Revolution and then returned to France from 1795, he inaugurated in 1816 the first steam navigation service (regular line) on the Seine river, what the notion of "bicentenary" is reminding us on that stamp.

Thank you very much Olivier for this nice letter posted on May 5th 2016 in a mailbox located in the Andorran town of Ordino, managed by the Spanish Post (Correos) !
The stamp (€ 1.15, print run : 80,000), issued on April 22, 2016, is the EUROPA stamp issued this year by the Spanish Post in Andorra, with a theme devoted to ecology through the slogan "Think Green" ("Pensar en verd" in Catalan).

As a reminder, a joint design was chosen by PostEurop to be reproduced on the EUROPA stamps issued this year as part of the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the issue of the first EUROPA stamps.
The project of the Cyprus Post (author : Doxia Sergidou) was chosen for this joint stamp, symbolizing man's responsibility (through a human hand) to turn gray (environmental pollution) into green (renewable energy...).

Merci beaucoup Nicolae !
On April 24, 2016, the Post of Moldova has released a new stamp dedicated to folk traditions and Christian festivals in particular ("Sărbători creştine şi tradiţii populare") through the celebration of Palm Sunday ("Floriile" in Romanian).
Designed by Elena Karachentseva, that stamp (L 1.75, print run : 200.000) appears on the special envelope below (design : Maria Maximenco, print run : 10,000) published on the occasion of Easter ("Sfintele Paşti"), sent on April 25, 2016 from Chișinău (MD-2012). Thank you very much Nicolae !

To note the special cancellation, valid from 25 April to 9 May 2016, dedicated to these Easter festivities celebrated in particular on Sunday, May 1 this year by the Orthodox.
This postmark (as well as the envelope's illustration) shows Easter symbols in the country : willow branches as well as decorated eggs and traditional Easter cake in Moldova (called "pasca" or "cozonac"), its round shape reminding the sun.
Willow branches with catkins (a symbol of fertility) and a palm leaf are featured to the left on this stamp above dedicated to Palm Sunday, the Christian feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter, reminding the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

Nicolae completed his postage with three other stamps used on the other side of that same envelope above, being part of the beautiful series (6 stamps) dedicated to wildflowers, issued on April 15, 2016.

Thank you also Nicolae for having sent me the card above published by the Post of Moldova in 2015 (No. 13/2015, design : Maria Maximenco, print run : 1000) for these Easter celebrations.
On the maxicard below (with that same cancellation) appears a stamp (L 3) being part of the "Easter" series (2 stamps) issued on April 2, 2009, showing painted eggs from the late 20th century, part of the collections of the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History in Chișinău.

10 years of the handover of Macau to China

Merci beaucoup Kevin !
After more than 400 years of Portuguese presence, the last European colony in Asia, Macau, was officially returned to China on December 20, 1999, becoming a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, a status similar as Hong Kong.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this return to the "motherland", the Macau Post issued a series of 3 stamps (1.50 patacas each) and one souvenir sheet on December 20, 2009.
The three stamps of this series were used on the nice letter below, sent on April 28, 2016, with a postmark including the mention "ECAP" ("Estacao Central para Atendimento do Publico"), the main post office in Macau. Thank you very much Kevin !

The stamp featuring the Chinese and Macau flags is a joint issue with the China Post (which also issued three stamps to commemorate this 10th anniversary).
The stamp in the center depicts the link between the Senate Square ("Largo do Senado") located in the historic center of Macau and a more futuristic aspect with the "Macau Sky Tower", a telecommunications tower of 338 meters high, opened in 2001, also housing shops and a panoramic restaurant offering the best view on the region. This Senate Square is home to the General Post Office of Macau and the Leal Senado (on the left on this stamp), which was the seat of the Legislative Assembly and of the government when Macau was still a Portuguese colony.
The last stamp on the right shows a night view of the modern districts of Macau with its famous casinos including the "Grand Lisboa" tower (261 meters, opened in 2007) and its special lotus flower-shape.
The ATM stamp at the bottom right, issued on June 30, 2015, features a part of the historic center of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005, the district of "Beco da Felicidade" here.

On 23 and 24 April 2016, the 62th Regional Philatelic Exhibition was organized by the "Amicale Philatélique de Nantes" in the town of Bouguenais (44), located on the Loire river, 6 km south-west of Nantes.

On the occasion of this philatelic event, some philatelic souvenirs were made, as well as a personalized stamp ("Green Letter 20g") and a special postmark.
It is that stamp (type "MonTimbraMoi"), canceled with this postmark, which appears on the special cover above sent from Bouguenais during this exhibition. Thank you very much François !
That stamp, as well as the cancellation, features the Piano'cktail cultural center where this philatelic exhibition was organized.

EUROPA 2016 stamp on cover from Germany

A new EUROPA 2016 stamp in my collection through this letter from Germany, sent on May 2, 2016 from the city of Hamburg. Thank you very much Lars !
As usual, the Deutsche Post has issued (on May 2, 2016) only one EUROPA stamp (€ 0.70) featuring the common design chosen by PostEurop to celebrate this year the 60th anniversary of the issue of the first EUROPA stamps, having ecology ("Think Green!") for theme.
As a reminder, it is the project of the Cyprus Post (author : Doxia Sergidou) which was chosen for this joint "transition to sustainability" stamp, referring to the role and responsibility of man for a greener future.

That stamp (layout by Werner Hans Schmidt), printed in sheetlet of 10 stamps, is featuring the EUROPA logo as well as the words in German "Umweltbewusst leben" ( "Environmentally conscious living").
The postage is completed with a € 0.20 stamp being part of the nice definitive ongoing series devoted to flowers. That stamp, issued on July 7, 2005, depicts a French marigold (Tagetes genus), having the particularity of being edible.
Finally, to note that, contrary to abuses by some postal administrations, this German EUROPA stamp has a nominal value corresponding only to a domestic shipment (€ 0.90 for an international shipment) !

2016 General Assembly of Philandorre - Special postmark from Ordino

After Castelnaudary (France) in 2015, the General Assembly of the Philatelic Association Philandorre was organized this year in the Principality of Andorra, in Ordino parish precisely (north-west of the country).
As a reminder, Philandorre is an association founded in 1977 to promote and develop the philately of Andorra, in particular by publishing philatelic and postal studies.
On the occasion of this General Assembly, a special cancellation was put into circulation in Ordino (AD300) on May 6, 2016, featuring a portrait of Ramon d'Areny-Plandolit.

A big thank you Olivier for this nice cover above canceled with this postmark and franked with the stamp (€ 1.25) issued on November 7, 2015, also dedicated to Ramon d'Areny-Plandolit (1915-1996), to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth.
I do not know exactly what this inkprint "Ordino 09-034", applied on this envelope, means ?
As a reminder, Ramon d'Areny-Plandolit was a famous photographer and philatelist from Andorra, Maximaphily's precursor and initiator of several specialized philatelic associations in the Principality.
Ramon d'Areny-Plandolit was a descendant of one of the few noble families of the Principality of Andorra and family's house, located in Ordino, is today one of the emblematic museums of the country, being the only example of a stately home in Andorra that has reached our days intact.

EUROPA 2016 (Think Green!) stamp set on FDC from Romania

As in previous years, the Romanian Post issued on May 4, 2016, a series of two EUROPA stamps declined in sheet of 32 stamps each, in minisheet of 6 stamps each, as well as in two versions of miniature sheets of 4 stamps (2 of each).
The Romanian Post has of course put into circulation a stamp (L 12) reproducing the common design chosen by PostEurop to celebrate this year the 60th anniversary of the issue of the first EUROPA stamps, on the theme of ecology ("Think Green!", "Gândeşte verde!" in Romanian).
As a reminder, it is the project of the Cyprus Post (author : Doxia Sergidou) which was chosen for this joint stamp, referring to the role and responsibility of man for a greener future.

Thank you very much Mihnea for this very nice illustrated letter sent by registered mail from Bucharest (post office 37) on the first day of issue, including these two se-tenant stamps.
To note the interesting FDC cancellation featuring a leaf inside a bulb, no doubt reminding the importance of the development of renewable energies.
As it was the case in 2013 and 2014, the designer Victor Telibaşa designed the 2nd EUROPA stamp above (L 5) showing a rural landscape (with an "eco-friendly" tractor !), largely inspired by the design of the joint stamp (a woman biking, wind turbine, trees, birds and green color).
I do not know exactly if the mountains in the background evoke a real landscape or not, and the same about the two rectangular towers ?

Bicentennial of the War of 1812 celebrated by the USPS

The USPS started in 2012 its commemorations of the bicentennial of the War of 1812 or Anglo-American War of 1812, with a stamp showing the frigate "USS Constitution".
Three other stamps on the same theme were issued in 2013 (Battle of Lake Erie), 2014 (Defense of Fort McHenry) and 2015 (Battle of New Orleans).
The War of 1812 refers to the conflict that opposed the US to the British Empire, between June 1812 and February 1815.
Angered by the attitude of Great Britain towards them and determined to seize the indigenous territories that block their westward expansion, the United States thus declared this war by attacking the British colony of Canada.

The two stamps ("Forever", $ 0.47 currently) devoted to the Battle of Lake Erie (issued on September 10, 2013) and the Battle of New Orleans (issued on January 8, 2015) are present on this very nice letter sent on April 25, 2016 from the spa city of Truth or Consequences (New Mexico). Thank you very much Tristan !
The Battle of Lake Erie is considered as one of the largest American naval victories, through its hero Oliver Hazard Perry, who prevented the British from penetrating further into the Great Lakes.
The Battle of New Orleans, the last of this war, is considered as the greatest American land victory during this conflict. The British came to seize the vast territory acquired by the United States after the sale of Louisiana and were then defeated by the troops of Andrew Jackson, future President of the United States.
Concerning this city of Truth or Consequences, it was founded under the name of Hot Springs and then took the name of the radio quizz show "Truth or Consequences" in 1950, when the host of this show announced that he would air the program from the first town that renamed itself after the show !

EUROPA 2015 (Old Toys) stamp set on cover from Guernsey

Happy to share with you this interesting letter sent on April 29, 2016 from Guernsey, being part of the archipelago of the Channel Islands (a British dependency) in the English Channel off the French coast.
To note that the postmark does not mention any specific city name (only "Guernsey Post Office").
To illustrate the theme of "Old toys" chosen by PostEurop in 2015, the Post of Guernsey issued on May 1, 2015, a series of 6 stamps (design : Robin Carter), two of which bearing the EUROPA logo.

These two EUROPA stamps have been used to frank this cover, featuring (such as the other 4 ones) toys owned or played with by children of the British Royal Family : a "163 Austin J40" pedal car (dating from the 1950s) that belonged to Prince Charles (£ 0.55) and a teddy bear with which children played in the Royal Nursery (£ 0.66).
These two stamps, such as the 4 other stamps of this set, have been printed in Ireland (by BDT International Security Printing Ltd.) each in sheetlet containing 10 stamps, as well as in a souvenir sheet including the 6 different stamps of this series.

Celebration of the 55 years of the first manned space flight in Moldova - overprinted stamp !

On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) became the first man to be sent into space aboard the capsule Vostok 3KA-2, making a complete revolution around the Earth during 108 minutes.
The Post of Moldova ("Poşta Moldovei") had commemorated the 40th anniversary of this USSR feat (less than a month before the first similar flight of US astronaut Alan Shepard) by issuing a special stamp (L 1.80, design : Victor Țurea, print run : 200,000) on April 12, 2001 featuring a portrait of Gagarin and Vostok capsule.
The Post of Moldova also celebrated the 45th anniversary (prepaid envelope issued on April 12, 2006) and the 50th anniversary (souvenir sheet issued on April 9, 2011) of this first manned space flight.

Merci beaucoup Nicolae !
On April 12, 2016, Poşta Moldovei has again celebrated this first space flight of Gagarin (55th anniversary) by reissuing the stamp issued on April 12, 2001 with an overprint applied with a golden ink : "12 aprilie 2016 – 55 de ani de la primul zbor al omului în spaţiu" ("April 12, 2016 - 55 years of the first human space flight").
The initial nominal value was also scratched and replaced by the L 11 value corresponding to the sending of a priority letter up to 20g to most of European and former USSR countries.
It is that stamp (print run : 11,240) which is on the official FDC (print run : 400, design : Lilian Iaţco) above with cancellations from Chișinău (MD-2012). Thank you very much Nicolae !

Nicolae was also kind enough to send me this nice postcard (back above and recto below) published by the Post of Moldova in 2014 (No. 7/2014, design : Vitaliu Pogolşa, print run : 500) devoted to the International Space Station ("Stația Spațială Internațională").
On April 7, 2011, the UN General Assembly declared April 12 as the International Day of Human Space Flight, paying tribute to this first flight of Gagarin in 1961.
On April 12, 2016, the special postmark applied on the other side of this postcard below, was also put into circulation regarding this International Day ("Ziua internațională a zborului omului în spațiu").

I was lucky to receive in 2001 (thank you very much Sergei !) the First Day Cover below regarding the original version of that stamp !

Panorama of the Moselle river loops in Germany

In its series devoted to the most beautiful panoramas of the country, the Deutsche Post has released on April 7, 2016, two new se-tenant stamps dedicated this time to the splendid landscapes of the Moselle valley (Moseltal).
560 km long, this river has its source in France (Vosges) and then passes through Luxembourg and Germany to discharge into the Rhine in Koblenz.
From the city of Trier in Germany, the Moselle river travels between schistose massifs and reveals typical landscapes with many meanders surrounded by vineyards planted on hillside, picturesque villages or castles.

These two stamps (bottom sheetlet's margin) were used to frank this nice letter sent on April 25, 2016 from Hamburg. Thank you very much Lars !

Rio 2016 Olympics - 2nd and 3rd Brazilian stamp set issued in 2015

I had already mentioned on this blog the first stamp set issued on March 24, 2015 by the Brazilian Post (Correios) devoted to the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
As a reminder, a sheet of 20 stamps was issued, consisting of 10 different stamps (each in two copies), dedicated to different sports that will be at the program of these games (9 Olympic and one Paralympic events).
It was actually 20 different stamps since each stamp featured a different background (for the same sport, 2 different stamps per sheet).

On August 6, 2015, a second sheet of the same type was issued, also composed of 20 stamps (commercial letter 1st level - R$ 1.30 currently, total print run : 2.4 million) designed by José Carlos Braga, depicting 9 Olympic and one Paralympic event (judo).
The stamps show athletes with a focus on a characteristic action of each sport : boxing, canoe, fencing, football, golf (a first since 1904 !), handball, table tennis, taekwondo and triathlon.
Four stamps of this sheet were used on the nice envelope above (including the logos of the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games at the top left) sent on April 7, 2016 from Sao Paulo. Thank you very much Marcelo !
To note also the FDC cancellations from Rio de Janeiro, including these same logos.

Marcelo also sent me the same day the second envelope above franked with four stamps from the 3rd sheet devoted to these Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio 2016, issued on December 12, 2015.
Contrary to the first two ones, this third sheet consists of 25 stamps : 22 stamps (representing 10 Olympic and one Paralympic sports) and 3 stamps including the logos of these games.
The four stamps above are devoted to gymnastics, sailing, tennis and Paralympic swimming.
To note that all 28 stamps (issued in these 3 sheets) featuring Olympic sports were again issued in a same sheet (30 stamps at R$ 1.40 including the Brazilian flag on the top left) issued on December 15, 2015.
Each of these 28 "Olympic" stamps is therefore available in 3 different versions !
