"Natural harbours" joint m/s with Malta, on FDC from Curaçao

Malta and Curaçao are small islands, both located close to large continents (Africa and Europe for Malta, South America for Curaçao).
Harbours or natural ports characterize the landscape of these two territories, which have allowed them over time to defend themselves against numerous invaders.
This "Natural harbours" theme was chosen to illustrate a very nice joint Malta-Curaçao issue, put into circulation in the form of two souvenir sheets, on August 20, 2013, respectively devoted to aerial views of Grand Harbour (Malta, in particular housing Valletta) and Schottegat, Willemstad's natural harbour. The souvenir sheet (1000c) issued by the postal administration of Curaçao (Cpost International), an island of the Lesser Antilles located off the coast of Venezuela, a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands since 2010, was used on this pretty letter.

To note on this envelope the presence of the First Day cancellation and an additional cachet (without indication of place or date) with the mention "Curaçao", including the flag and a map of the island.
The natural harbour of Schottegat, located on the south-eastern coast of Curaçao, is the largest and most important port on the island, combining many activities: terminals for cruise ships (Otrobanda), oil refinery, transshipment center, container terminal...
The Dutch took possession of Curaçao because the island was a rich source of salt which they needed to preserve their food, especially herring. They occupied the island in 1632 and it was during this time that the Dutch West Indies Company saw the value of this natural harbour and founded the capital of Curaçao, Willemstad, on its banks.
The center of Willemstad, with its colorful architecture inspired by the historic regions of the Netherlands, as well as its harbour's entrance ("Handelskade" district in particular), has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997.

"National flag 35th anniversary" s/s on FDC from Curaçao

The flag of Curaçao, an island of the Lesser Antilles located off the coast of Venezuela, a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands since 2010, was officially adopted on July 2, 1984.
This flag consists of a blue field with a yellow horizontal stripe (symbolizing the sun, warmth and joy of the inhabitants) with two white stars in the upper left part, the upper and lower blue parts respectively representing the sky and the sea.
The two stars represent Curaçao (the largest island) and Klein Curaçao (the small one), the 5 points of the stars representing the five continents, where the inhabitants of the island come from.
On July 2, 2019, the Curaçao Postal Administration (Cpost International) put into circulation a nice souvenir sheet (1000c), designed by Martin den Dulk, dedicated to the 35th anniversary of this national flag.
This souvenir sheet is present on the First Day cover below.
To note this additional cachet (without indication of place or date) with the mention "Curaçao", including the flag and a map of the island.

This souvenir sheet is very interesting because it is composed of a multitude of details.
The 5-pointed star of the flag indicates the 5 continents from which all the inhabitants of Curaçao come, in the form of clouds in the sky: North and South America, Europe, Asia / Oceania and Africa.
The flag's shadow has the shape of the island of Curaçao while the flagpole is located at Brionplein, the central square of Willemstad, the capital, where the official celebration of the flag ("Dia di Bandera") takes place every year on July 2.
Two other places where these celebrations take place are also illustrated through maps in the lower part: in Barber (Bandabou, western part of the island) and Bandariba (eastern part of the island).
A refrain of the Curaçao hymn ("Himno di Kòrsou"), adopted in 1978, is finally mentioned in Papiamento, the Creole language of the Netherlands Antilles, spoken in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao with local variants: "To our fatherland we demonstrate honour and loyalty, as to the flag the union of our nation".

"Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers" joint m/s on cover from Curaçao

On March 18, 2009 took place in Santiago the official launch of a set of stamps issued by the Chilean Post as part of the international campaign "Preserve the polar regions and glaciers", in the presence of the Ambassador of Finland, Livo Salmi. A similar demonstration took place the same day in Helsinki for the launch of the Finnish souvenir sheet, in the presence of the Chilean Ambassador, Carlos Parra.
Carlos Parra initiated this idea of a joint issue between a country in the Arctic region, Finland, and a country close to the Antarctic continent, Chile, aimed at raising awareness of the world on the impact of global warming on the polar zones.
This initiative became a concrete project during the official visit to Finland (in May 2007) of the President of Chile. Nearly 40 postal administrations, including France, joined this international campaign by issuing stamps in 2009, sharing an emblem representing an ice crystal, created by the Finnish graphic designer Saku Heinänen.

With 2 years of delay, the postal administration of Curaçao (Cpost International), an island of the Lesser Antilles located off the coast of Venezuela, a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands since 2010, put into circulation (on August 11, 2011) a souvenir sheet devoted to this campaign ("Preservá e regionnan polar ku nan glèchernan" in Papiamento, the Creole language of the Netherlands Antilles, spoken in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao).
Designed by Richmond Gijsbertha, this souvenir sheet was used on this letter sent on October 8, 2020, with a rectangular "Philately 84" postmark and a cachet (without mention of place or date) with mention "Curaçao", including the flag and a map of the island.
The two round stamps making up this souvenir sheet represent respectively this stylized ice crystal (also present in the lower margin) with an ice floe in the background (112c) and Antarctica with the sun shining in the background (405c).

Measures similar to many countries have been taken (closure of schools, curfews, lockdown, closure of borders) with a return to normal in July 2020.
Following the implementation of austerity measures by the local government, protests and riots took place, particularly on June 24, 2020 by angry civil servants.
Around 80,000 people, or half of the population of Curaçao, still depend on food aid today ...
