EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp on FDC from France

Happy to share with you this First Day cover (May 7, 2020) concerning the EUROPA stamp issued this year by the French Post, illustrating the theme of the ancient postal routes.
This stamp (€ 1.40, print run: 800,000), designed by Stéphane Humbert-Basset and engraved by Line Filhon, depicts in the foreground a Briska-type mail coach (from a photograph of the French Postal Museum) operated in France from 1830-1840 for the transport of mail and / or passengers.
A mail-only trunk, featured on the First Day postmark from Strasbourg applied to this letter, was located at the rear of this type of horse-drawn stagecoach of Austrian origin.
In order to ensure the rapid circulation of official dispatches, the royal power established the horse post ("Poste aux chevaux") from the middle of the 14th century.

This organization was based on two emblematic trades: the "postillons" accompanying the bags of dispatches and letters and the postmasters, having paid dearly for the privilege of holding official post relays positioned every seven miles.
The background of this stamp, the only engraved EUROPA 2020 stamp (with also Monaco), makes it possible to view some of the postal routes set up in France at the beginning of the 17th century, around Paris, Evreux and in the south-west, with routes passing through Bordeaux and the presence of the city of Périgueux, no doubt a nod to the Phil@poste printing house.

These postal routes are extracted from this "geographical map of the posts crossing France" above (collection of the French National Library), established in 1632 by the cartographer Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667).
About forty postal routes are featured on this map, most of them radiating in star from Paris, Lyon, Toulouse or Bordeaux (27 destinations listed in 1790).

"PyeongChang Winter Olympics 2018" stamp set on FDC from Liechtenstein

As has been the case since 2008 (Olympic Games in Beijing), the Post of Liechtenstein has once again had the good idea of calling upon an artist living in the country where these games take place for the design of its series devoted to the winter Olympic Games organized in 2018 (from February 9 to 25) in PyeongChang, South Korea.
After the famous Brazilian neo-pop artist Romero Britto for the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, it is the South Korean artist Sojung Kim-McCarthy, who currently resides in Bournemouth, United Kingdom, who therefore designed this series of two stamps issued on November 13, 2017.
These two stamps are present on the official FDC below, with postmark from Vaduz, with the emblem of the National Olympic Committee of Liechtenstein, consisting of the Olympic rings and the princely crown, on the envelope, the postmark and the two stamps.

These two stamps (printed by Gutenberg AG) illustrate the two disciplines, cross-country skiing (CHF 1.70) and alpine skiing (CHF 2.00), in which the 3 athletes (1 woman, 2 men) from Liechtenstein were involved in PyeongChang.
At these PyeongChang Olympics, Liechtenstein won one medal, the bronze in the women's super G thanks to Tina Weirather, the first Olympic podium for this country since Paul Frommelt (slalom) in Calgary in 1988.
In 19 participations in the Olympic Winter Games (since 1936), the small Principality of Liechtenstein has won 10 medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 6 bronze) in 5 editions, all won in alpine skiing events.
Among these 10 medals, 4 were won by Hanni Wenzel (in 1976 and 1980), the mother of Tina Weirather who retired from sport at the end of the 2019-2020 season.

Joint stamp with Poland (100 years from the birth of John Paul II) on cover from Slovakia

On May 18, 2020, the Slovak Post issued a stamp (€ 1.70, print run: 180,000) dedicated to the 100th anniversary (to the day) of the birth of John Paul II (1920-2005).
This stamp, printed in a sheet of 6 stamps, with an attached label, is a joint issue with the Polish Post (design: Maciej Jędrysik) which curiously put it into circulation on a different date, May 13, 2020 ...
The Slovak version of this stamp was used on the letter below sent on May 21, 2020 from Rožňavské Bystré. Thank you very much Miloš!
John Paul II was born Karol Wojtyła in Wadowice, Poland. He was ordained auxiliary bishop of Krakow in 1958, Archbishop of Krakow in 1963 and appointed cardinal in 1967.
During the conclave of October 16, 1978, he was elected pope, the first Slavic pope in history (his pontificate lasted more than 26 years).

During his pontificate, John Paul II made 104 international apostolic journeys including 3 visits to Slovakia, in 1990, 1995 and 2003.
John Paul II was a tireless defender of peace, respect for human rights and human dignity and his charisma brought new dynamism to the Catholic Church.
He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2011 and then canonized by Pope Francis in 2014.
On the stamp above, John Paul II is represented in prayer, with a halo, with his birthplace in Wadowice in the background, the label showing him with the Slovak cardinal Ján Chryzostom Korec (1924-2015) during his visit in Nitra in 1995.
After years of hiding and imprisonment under the communist regime, Ján Chryzostom Korec was appointed bishop of Nitra in 1990 and cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1991.
Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican is depicted in the margin of this sheet, also with the birthplace of John Paul II and landscapes of Nitra.
Other postal administrations (Hungary, Romania, Azerbaijan ...) have also issued stamps dedicated to the 100th anniversary of this pope and another joint Poland-Vatican issue will be issued later this year.

Merci beaucoup Nicolae !
The International Museum Day is an event organized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), held evrey year since 1977, around May 18th.
This international day aims to raise awareness among the general public about the current challenges facing museums in the development of society on an international scale.
On May 18, 2020, the Post of Moldova put into circulation a special postmark dedicated to this International Museum Day ("Ziua Internațională a Muzeelor").
Designed by Maria Maximenco, this cancellation from Chişinău (MD-2012) has been applied to the beautiful envelope below. Thank you very much Nicolae!

This postmark also includes the logo of ICOM, established in 1946, the only organization of museums and museum professionals in the world (30,000 members in 137 countries) with the mission to promote and protect the cultural and natural heritage, present and future, tangible and intangible.
Nicolae used an envelope issued by the Post of Moldova in 2013 (print run: 5,000, design: Alexandr Kornienko) including illustrations of the country's three main national museums: the National Museum of Archeology and History, the National Museum of Fine Arts and the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History.
The 2 stamps above (1.20 L - National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History and 2 L - National Museum of Archeology and History) are part of a series (3 stamps) issued on May 3, 2014 devoted to the same theme of national museums.

Nicolae completed his postage, to reach the postal rate for a priority shipment (up to 20g) to France (11 L currently) with 3 other stamps including 2 on the other side of this envelope above (with June 2, 2020 standard cancellations).  The 7.75-ruble stamp (then 7.75 L from February 1, 2006) is part of a series of 4 stamps issued on July 20, 1992, representing the same supersonic aircraft, with different colors. The other stamp (6 coupons - 0.06 L) is part of an old definitive series, issued on August 7, 1993, consisting of 8 small stamps (values between 2 and 50 coupons) and 2 large stamps (100 and 250 coupons). As a reminder, after its first stamps denominated in rubles (from June 23, 1991), the Post of Moldova issued stamps denominated in coupons (between August 2, 1993 and November 29, 1993) and then in Leu.
This stamp was put back into circulation from December 15, 1995 (100 coupons = 1 Leu).
Finally, to note that the Post of Moldova had already issued postmarks dedicated to this International Museum Day in 1998, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2018.

"2020 International Year of Plant Health" souvenir sheet on cover from Serbia

The United Nations (in collaboration with FAO) declared 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH), an opportunity to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment, and boost economic development.  According to the FAO, plants make up 80% of the food we eat and produce 98% of the oxygen we breathe. Yet, they are under constant and increasing threat from pests and diseases (up to 40% of the world's food crops are destroyed each year).
This theme will be illustrated this year on stamps (Switzerland, Luxembourg, Moldova, United Nations, Vatican City, Latvia, Portugal, Turkey, Serbia, Italy, Tunisia, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Finland ...), special cancellations (Moldova), prepaid cards (Poland), ATM stamps (Spain) or € 2.00 commemorative coins (Belgium).

On April 22, 2020 (in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis), the Serbian Post put into circulation an interesting souvenir sheet (108 dinars, print run: 15,000) to illustrate this theme, with the presence of the official logo of this International Year of the Plant Health ("Međunarodna godina zdravlja biljaka" in Serbian).
This numbered souvenir sheet (No 5676) was used on this letter sent on June 4, 2020 from the city of Novi Sad. Thank you very much Dusan!
Designed by Nadežda Skočajić, this souvenir sheet is featuring a kind of hourglass symbolizing the transformation of flowers into fruits (apples here), which seems to be protected by two human hands, an adult hand and a child's hand, probably to remember that this plant health issue concerns all generations ...

"Fire of Notre-Dame de Paris" Czech prepaid cards edited by PRESSFIL

It is the first time that I have received this type of prepaid card, with the PRESSFIL logo, a Czech company (based in Plzeň) specializing in the edition of occasional postcards but also of specialized books and materials for collectors, philatelists in particular.
These cards are produced in collaboration with the Czech Post, with a classic pre-printed "post horn" stamp (permanent domestic priority rate "A" - 26 CZK currently) but I do not know the date of issue or the print run of the two cards below, evoking the terrible fire of April 15, 2019 which destroyed the spire and the roof covering the nave, choir and transept of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Thank you very much Bret for sending these two PRESSFIL prepaid cards!
From 24 to 30 April 2019, the Czech Post has put into circulation a special postmark dedicated to the Notre-Dame Cathedral and in support to its renovation following this terrible fire.
It was the largest disaster suffered by the Cathedral since the beginning of its construction in 1163, which moved much of the planet Earth and prompted many calls for donations for its reconstruction.
Designed by Jan Kavan, this postmark put into circulation by the Prague 1 main post office was applied (as of April 30, 2019) on these two cards.

This postmark represents the famous facade of the Cathedral (with its disappeared spire in the center), with fleur de lys (symbols of royalty in France) on each side and the mention "Jsme s Vámi" ("We are with you").

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on cover from Switzerland

Thank you very much Jürgen for this nice letter, sent on May 20, 2020 from Geneva, stamped with the EUROPA 2020 series (2 stamps) issued on May 7, 2020, devoted to the theme of the ancient postal routes (theme rephrased in "Historical Postal Routes by the Swiss Post ...)!
To note this interesting postmark (Geneva 1) depicting the facade of the main post office, located Mont-Blanc street, built between 1889 and 1892 by Geneva architects John and Marc Camoletti.
These two EUROPA stamps (CHF 1.00 each), designed by Jürg Glauser, were printed by Joh. Enschedé (Netherlands) in a unique sheet composed of 16 stamps (8 of each) with mentions EUROPA and the theme of this issue (in German, French, Italian and English) in the upper (and lower?) margin.
This is the case for the two se-tenant stamps used on this letter, with margin and mentions in French.
The EUROPA logo on these stamps is again non-compliant (inadequate font for the letter R)!

This series is very well designed because it evokes an old postal route between Rheinhausen (Germany) and Mantua (Italy), passing through Swiss territory (Basel, Zurich and Gotthard Pass), distributed over the two se-tenant stamps.
These two stamps entitled "Switzerland-Germany" and "Switzerland-Italy" respectively were designed in collaboration with the German Post and its EUROPA souvenir sheet on the same theme, in particular the postal routes set up from 1627 by the Frankfurter postmaster (and organizer of the imperial post) Johann von den Birghden (1582-1645).
We also see on this series different postal messengers of this era, traveling on horseback (and playing the horn), on foot or by boat.
To note that this route was previously managed by the famous Thurn und Taxis family who, in the 14th century, had set up a courier service for the Republic of Venice. In 1490, the brothers Janetto and Francesco de Tassis (Germanized form of Taxis) founded an European postal system on behalf of the later Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I.

"Stay at home and healthy" stamps on cover from Germany (private post "Brief und Mehr")

Thank you very much Maxim for this very interesting letter, sent on June 10, 2020 from the German city of Münster (North Rhine-Westphalia), where the private post "Brief und mehr" ("Letter and more") has its headquarters ...
Created in 2006, "Brief und mehr" is one of the many German private posts, operating in the Münsterland region, with more than 2.000 regular customers (companies, public institutions and individuals).
This private post has its own mailboxes (different from that of the Deutsche Post) and points of sale, which can be geolocated.
"Brief und mehr" is regularly issuing its own stamps such as the two ones used on this cover, printed in the same booklet made up of 10 self-adhesive stamps (5 of each).

This booklet was put into circulation on April 6, 2020 within the framework of the health rules to be applied to fight against the epidemic of Covid-19 in Germany, with these two slogans "Stay home, Save lives" in English and "Bleiben Sie gesund" in German ("Stay healthy").

To note that this letter passed through the Netherlands, the city of Schiedam (near Rotterdam) in particular, where a "Postage Paid - PostNL" mark was applied.
I suppose "Brief und mehr" has signed an agreement with PostNL concerning letters sent abroad?

"World War II - 75th anniversary of the victory" prepaid envelope from Moldova

On May 8, 2020, the Post of Moldova put into circulation a prepaid envelope (1.75 L - sale price: 3.50 L) dedicated to the 2nd World War and to the 75th anniversary of the victory ("75 de ani de la victoria în cel de-al Doilea Război Mondial") against Nazi Germany.
Designed by Oleg Cojocari, this envelope (print run: 5,000) evokes the Eternity Memorial Complex in Chișinău, dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who died in battles against the Romanian and German troops during this 2nd World War, in particular during the Jassy-Kishinev Offensive in August 1944 (more than 13,000 Soviet soldiers died, 54,000 wounded during this battle).
Thank you very much Nicolae for sending this envelope on the First Day of issue (postmark: eternal flame) from Chișinău (MD-2012)!

The main monument of this Eternity Memorial Complex is a pyramid composed of five 25-meter tall stone rifles, with an eternal flame in the center, depicted on the pre-printed stamp, next to one of the many bas-reliefs present on this site, paying tribute to these soldiers.
To note that this monument was featured on a stamp issued in 2010 to commemorate the 65 years of the end of the 2nd World War.
The illustration on the left on the envelope shows another monument of this Memorial, a column surmounted by a golden star, with the inscription "1941-1945".
The troops of the Romanian dictator Ion Antonescu, an ally of Nazi Germany, occupied the entire region of Bessarabia (the present territory of Moldova was part of it) from 1941. A hundred thousand Jews were deported or executed when they fled to Ukraine.
From March to August 1944, Soviet troops managed to liberate the territory of Moldova.

Nicolae completed his postage, to reach the postal rate for a priority shipment (up to 20g) to France (11 L currently) with 3 other stamps including 2 on the other side of this envelope above.

The stamp above on the right (50 coupons - 0.50 L) is part of an old definitive series, issued on August 7, 1993, consisting of 8 small stamps (values between 2 and 50 coupons) and 2 large stamps (100 and 250 coupons). As a reminder, after its first stamps denominated in rubles (from June 23, 1991), the Post of Moldova issued stamps denominated in coupons (between August 2, 1993 and November 29, 1993) and then in Leu. Sepac 2019 (Old residential houses) stamp on FDC from Liechtenstein

As a reminder, the Small European Postal Administration Cooperation (SEPAC) is an association of small European postal administrations (13 currently), created in 1999, in order to discuss various philatelic and postal issues specific to these small structures.
Since 2007 (theme : landscapes), stamps having a common theme are issued by some members (11 in 2019, all except Gibraltar and Vatican City) and an election for the most beautiful Sepac stamp has been organized for the first time in 2010.
The Principality of Liechtenstein has participated in these Sepac issues since 2007 and issued, on September 2, 2019, its 10th Sepac stamp, whose theme this year was devoted to old residential houses.
This stamp (1.50 CHF, print run: 60,000), designed by Sereina Giger and printed by Royal Joh. Ensched in 4-colour offset, steel engraving black and gold hot-foil stamping, is present on the official FDC below with postmark from Vaduz.

This stamp, including the Sepac logo, is dedicated to the "Red House" ("Rotes Haus") in Vaduz from a less traditional angle.
This house in its current appearance dates from the years 1902 to 1905, when the sculptor and architect Egon Rheinberger (1870-1936) connected the much older residential building with a stepped gable and the old wine press building with a round tower built according to his own plans.
He thus created a striking architectural complex, which today, alongside Vaduz Castle, is another landmark of the capital and has been a listed building since 1951.
In 1807, after having belonged to a convent for almost 300 years, the house became the property of the Rheinberger family, whose descendants still live there today.
To note this illustration on the left on the envelope evoking a story linked to this Red House, a dispute between two brothers about two chickens. The result of this dispute was that one of the brothers shot the other. On a stone in the path where he was shot, the ghost of the murdered man could be heard complaining for a long time, and the window shutter from where he was shot could not be closed ...

This project consisted in the construction of a dam and a pumping station on both sides as well as a pipeline passing mainly under the sea.
This joint stamp is featuring a satellite view of Turkey and the island of Cyprus, symbolically linked by this pipeline made up of water and flags of the two territories.
At each end of this pipeline is mentioned the dam which was built specially for this project, Alaköprü dam in Turkey (built between 2010 and 2014) and Geçitköy dam in Northern Cyprus (built between 2012 and 2014).
Photographs of these two dams are reproduced on the left on this FDC, with postmarks from the Turkish city of Mersin, the Alaköprü dam being located in the Mersin Province.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp on cover from Åland

When Sweden became a major power in the 1600s, regular mail services between the western and eastern parts of the kingdom became necessary.
Published in 1636, the first postal ordinance of the Swedish queen Kristina stipulated that landowning resident farmers, not the state, were obliged to carry the mail with the assistance of farm hands.
On June 3, 1638, the first postal route left Stockholm via Grisslehamn across the Sea of Åland to Eckerö then the villages of Emkarby, Finby and Vargata in Vårdö, before reaching Finland with Turku as destination.
This route took 4 to 7 days but it could take up to a month in headwind and bad weather, this crossing being then known as the most dangerous postal route in the world (more than 200 postal farmers lost their lives).

Since 1974, a Postal Boat Race has been organized each year in June across the Sea of Åland in order to recall this historically important postal route and pay tribute to these postal farmers who conveyed the mail between Sweden and Åland for almost 300 years.
This race is the theme chosen by the Åland Post on its EUROPA stamp issued on May 8, 2020, dedicated to the ancient postal routes ("Vanhoja postiteitä" in Finnish).
Thank you very much Liisa for this letter sent on May 22, 2020 from Mariehamn, the capital of this Åland archipelago, an autonomous Finnish territory, located in the Gulf of Bothnia, between Sweden and Finland, franked with this stamp!
This stamp ("Världen" or "World" rate - € 2.00, print run: 90,000) was designed from a photograph by David Lundberg showing boats participating in this Postal Boat Race in 2019, as they set off from Grisslehamn. The objective of this race is to cross the Sea of Åland as quickly as possible, over a distance of 44 km (the crossing takes between 3 and 6 hours, depending on weather conditions).

Tribute to conductor Václav Neumann on FDC from Czech Republic

On May 13, 2020, the Czech Post issued a stamp (19 CZK) dedicated to the conductor, violinist and violist Václav Neumann (1920-1995) on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Vaclav Neumann will have contributed a lot to making Czech music of the 20th century known and played. During the 22 years he conducted the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in Prague, he mainly recorded the works of the Czech composers Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček and Bohuslav Martinů.
Thank you very much Bret for sending this official FDC (print run: 2,900) with postmarks from Prague (conductor's baton in motion), regarding this simple design's stamp (design: Pavel Sivko) depicting Neumann on white background, in conducting an orchestra.

To note the illustration on the left on this envelope, a composition from the desk of the conductor and musicians' stands.
After conducting the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig from 1964 to 1968, Václav Neumann was appointed director of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (after Warsaw Pact troops invaded Czechoslovakia) and remained so until his retirement in 1990.
At the end of the 1980s, Vaclav Neumann refused any collaboration with the television and radio of his country, to protest against the repression which had forced so many Czechoslovak artists to silence or to emigration.
Concerned about the political and cultural future of his country, he conducted in particular Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on the occasion of the Velvet Revolution in 1989.
With Rafael Kubelík, he was one of the representative Central European interpreters of the works of Ludwig van Beethoven and Gustav Mahler.

EUROPA 2020 (Ancient postal routes) stamp set on cover from Iceland

On May 7, 2020, the Icelandic Post put into circulation its EUROPA series (2 stamps), devoted this year to the theme of "ancient postal routes" ("Fornar póstleiðir" in Icelandic).
As a reminder, the Icelandic postal service announced the end of stamp issues in 2021 so this series could be the last Icelandic EUROPA set before very long ...
Thank you very much Benedikt for this lovely letter, stamped with this EUROPA 2020 set, sent on May 25, 2020 from Reykjavík, the capital!
These 2 stamps (design: Borgar Hjörleifur Árnason) were printed by Cartor Security Printing, each in sheet of 10 self-adhesive stamps.
These 2 stamps feature different ancient postal routes on a map of Iceland, with a close-up on the northwest peninsula of Vestfirðir (Westfjords).

The stamp on the right ("50g outside Europe", ISK 315) indeed illustrates the first postal route in Iceland, through this peninsula of Vestfirðir, the other stamp ("50g to Europe", ISK 250) representing different old postal routes throughout Iceland.
The history of these postal routes is closely linked to the development of Iceland as a nation and its cultural evolution.
Mail delivery in Iceland dates back almost to the earliest settlements, when merchants and men of importance sent mail and correspondence at their own expense, but it wasn't until about 1776 that the sovereign of Iceland, King Christian VII of Denmark, issued a decree that a postal system should be established in Iceland.
The Icelandic postal messenger in the 18th and 19th century was considered as a hero by the people because he was traveling in a rugged landscape, often with horses, in a country with no roads, no bridges over fast flowing rivers ...
