Presidential Election in Czech Republic - Special postmarks (1st and 2nd round)

Merci beaucoup Slavek !
On January 12 and 13, 2018, the first round of the presidential election in Czech Republic took place, the second election of this type by direct universal suffrage, the first one leading to the election of Miloš Zeman in 2013, who was candidate for a new 5 years' term.
On this occasion, a special postmark (similar to the one released in 2013), designed by Miloslav Bláha, was issued on 12 and 13 January 2018 by the post office No 12 of Prague Castle (Hrad), with the mention "Volba prezidenta" ("Election of the President").
This cancellation was applied on January 12, 2018 with an unusual red ink, on the letter below. Thank you very much Slavek!

This postmark is featuring the official flag of the President of the Republic, including the national motto "Pravda vítězí" ("Truth prevails").
The self-adhesive stamp (permanent rate "E" for a shipment up to 50g to Europe - 35 CZK currently), issued on January 20, 2017, is devoted to the Bohemian Crown Jewels.
As a reminder, that stamp depicts the three objects of these jewels preserved in St. Vitus Cathedral of Prague : a gold Royal scepter (created during the reign of Emperor Maximilian II in the mid-16th century), a gold Royal orb (late 16th century) and the crown of Saint Wenceslas (14th century).

After this first round with 9 candidates (only men!), outgoing President, Miloš Zeman, was opposed in the 2nd round, organized on 26 and 27 January 2018, to Jiří Drahoš, a pro-European candidate.
This campaign took place in a climate of mistrust towards the European Union and in particular the policy about migrants.
Miloš Zeman, despite a fragile state of health, was re-elected with 51.37% of the votes cast.
On January 26 and 27, 2018, the same type of cancellation was put into circulation during this second round of the presidential election.
This postmark was applied on January 26, 2018 on the nice letter above, franked with one of the two stamps (27 CZK) of the series "UNESCO World Heritage" issued on September 7, 2016, the historic center of Prague here. St. Vitus Cathedral, featured on that stamp, is part of this Prague Castle.
Slavek also used one stamp being part of the definitive series devoted to folk architecture in the country, a facade of a house in the village of Bušanovice (5 CZK, issued on December 19, 2012) here.

Tribute to architect Jože Plečnik on cover from Slovenia

On June 7, 2017, the Czech Post had already put into circulation a stamp dedicated to Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik (1872-1957) on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of his death.
Jože Plečnik, considered to be Slovenia's greatest architect and urban planner, worked mainly in Ljubljana, his hometown, but also in Prague, Vienna or Belgrade.
On September 29, 2017, the Slovenian Post issued a very nice miniature sheet (print run: 40,000, design: Borut Bončina) consisting of 3 stamps, dedicated to Jože Plečnik and in particular to 3 of his emblematic achievements in Ljubljana.
Thank you very much Petra for this letter sent on January 5, 2018 from Ljubljana, franked with this miniature sheet!
To note that this letter has been taxed (imprint "T" on the right), the current rate for an international shipment (up to 50g) seems to be €1.54, this miniature sheet having a nominal value of €1.46...

With Czech Republic, Slovenia submitted in 2015 an application for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List entitled "The timeless, humanistic architecture of Jože Plečnik in Ljubljana and Prague", including 5 sites in Slovenia and Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord in Prague, erected according to the Plečnik project between 1929 and 1932.
In his hometown of Ljubljana, where he spent 40 years, he designed projects for urban solutions, squares, bridges, public spaces, buildings, monuments and churches.
The 3 stamps of this miniature sheet are devoted to some of these sites such as the National and University Library (€ 0.40), Plečnik's most important  monumental public building in Slovenia, the Garden of All Saints in Žale Cemetery (€ 0.48), the most important cemetery in Ljubljana where Plečnik is buried, the church of St  Michael on the Marsh (€ 0.58), one of the most original buildings built by Plečnik between 1937 and 1940.

"Dinosaur" and "Fauna" stamps on cover from France

Thank you very much Pierre for this interesting letter sent on January 18, 2018 from the "Paris Louvre" post office, with these specific postmarks including the coat of arms of the city of Paris!
Pierre used here some rather old stamps (with "RF" mentions, replaced today by FRANCE), 3 of which were put into circulation in a souvenir sheet (4 stamps) on June 19, 2000, with francs/euros double denomination.
This souvenir sheet, entitled "Regards sur la nature" ("Looking at nature"), was issued in collaboration with the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) in Paris, whose collections are among the largest in the world with those of the National Museum of Natural History in Washington and the Natural History Museum in London.

These 3 stamps are dedicated to a species of dinosaur, Allosaurus (a skeleton is exhibited in the paleontology gallery of the MNHN), a species of butterfly (Agrias sardanapalus), native to South America, part of the collections of the MNHN's department of entomology (50 million insects), and a reticulated giraffe, one of the flagship species of the MNHN's Great Evolution Gallery.
The 4th stamp above (€ 0.46) is part of another souvenir sheet (4 stamps), issued on March 24, 2003, dedicated to overseas birds, a purple-throated carib (Eulampis jugularis) here , a hummingbird species living in the Caribbean, especially in Guadeloupe and Martinique.
To note finally this rather unusual green inkprint "ECOPLI" on the envelope, this postage (€ 1.79) covering the price for an Ecopli shipment up to 100g (€ 1.56 currently).

"Falcon" definitive stamps on three covers from the United Arab Emirates

On January 31, 2007, the United Arab Emirates postal administration (Emirates Post) released the first part (7 stamps) of a new definitive series, representing a stylized falcon, one of the symbols of this country made of 7 emirates: Abu Dhabi (whose capital is also the country's capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain.
This country, like other countries of the Arabian Peninsula, is indeed well known for falconry, this traditional method of hunting by desert men, called the "Sport of Princes". With camel and horse racing, falconry is a big passion in this country and is an integral part of the local culture.
A gold hawk, emblem of the Quraysh branch, appears on the coat of arms of the country (it is also present on the arms of Kuwait or Syria).

Two of these definitive stamps were used on the three special covers above and below sent from three different UAE's post offices: Al Ras (a locality of Dubai) with these two-color (blue and red) postmarks of January 8, 2018, Abu Dhabi Central Post office on January 13, 2018 and Dubai I suppose with this mechanical cancellation of January 10, 2018 with only the mention "Emirates Post". Thank you very much Pierre!
Among the 7 stamps issued on January 31, 2007, some of them were reissued several times, such as the 2 Dirhams stamp, reissued on April 2, 2009 and December 29, 2011.
The 2 Dirhams stamp used on these envelopes thus includes the "2011" year, the 4 Dirhams stamp being part of the first issue of 2007.

Falconry was inscribed in 2016 by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a registration application supported by 18 different countries, including the United Arab Emirates or France.

"Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics" stamp on cover from Hungary

Merci beaucoup John !
The Hungarian Post had not issued any stamp in 2014 for the Sochi Olympic Winter Games (stamps had been issued for the previous winter games) but a stamp (HUF 445) was put into circulation on February 2, 2018 on the occasion of the 23rd Olympic Winter Games ("XXIII. Téli olimpiai játékok" in Hungarian) held from 9 to 25 February 2018 in Pyeongchang, Korea.
That stamp (print run: 200,000, printed in sheet of 50 stamps), designed by Luca Héjja and László Ördögh (Graphasel design studio), was used on the nice letter below sent on February 9, 2018, the opening day of these games, from the village of Gencsapáti (west of the country, near the Austrian border). Thank you very much John!

As for the Rio Games in 2016, that stamp mentions the Hungarian Olympic team ("Magyar Olimpiai Csapat") as well as the number of gold medals (176) won by Hungary at the Olympic Games.
In Pyeongchang, the Hungarian delegation consisted of 19 athletes (10 women, 9 men) engaged in 6 sports (alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, short track speed skating and speed skating).
Before these games, Hungary had won only 6 medals (2 silver, 4 bronze) at the Olympic Winter Games, only in figure skating, the last one at the Lake Placid Games in 1980!
The greatest medal luck at these games was in short track speed skating, the discipline featured on the stamp, with brothers Shaoang Liu and Shaolin Sándor Liu in particular.
On February 22, 2018, the two Liu brothers, along with Csaba Burjan and Viktor Knoch, won the first gold medal in Hungarian history at the Olympic Winter Games in the Men's 5,000m Relay event.

India-Belarus joint stamp issue : 25 years of diplomatic relations

The margins of this souvenir sheet are dedicated to the buildings of the National Library in Minsk (on the right), inaugurated in 2006, and the Lotus Temple (a Bahá'í House of Worship) in Delhi, opened in 1986.

As a reminder, these 2 same buildings are present on the sheetlet above put into circulation by the Belarus Post.

A big thank you Bret for sending these two official FDCs (print run: 3,300 each) regarding these two stamps (Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games), with cancellations from Prague!
The engraving on the envelope above, by Jaroslav Tvrdoň, also shows a biathlete, during the cross-country skiing phase.
In Pyeongchang, the Czech team consists of 96 athletes (28 women, 68 men) engaged in 13 of the 15 Olympic disciplines.
On the eve of the closing ceremony of these Olympic Games, Czech Republic won 7 medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze), Ester Ledecká having made history, being the first athlete in history at the Olympic Winter Games to win a gold medal in two different sports (Super-G in alpine skiing and parallel giant slalom in snowboard) during the same edition!

In Pyeongchang, the Czech Paralympic delegation will consist of 24 athletes, engaged in 2 sports (alpine skiing and sledge hockey).

10th Anniversary of Chişinău / Iaşi Twinning - special postmark from Moldova

On January 24, 2018, the Post of Moldova issued a special cancellation devoted to the 10th anniversary of the twinning ("10 ani de înfrățire") between the cities of Chişinău, capital of the country, and Iaşi, the 4th largest city in Romania.
Iaşi was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia between 1564 and 1859, then one of the two capitals of the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia between 1859 and 1862, and was even the capital of Romania between 1916 and 1918.
We can thus understand these historical links between the two cities, Iaşi being located in the east of Romania, not far from the Moldovan border.

It is this postmark, designed by Maria Maximenco, featuring the coats of arms of the two cities, which has been applied on this illustrated envelope above sent from Chişinău (MD-2012). Thank you very much Nicolae!
To note that stamp (L 1.75), issued on December 20, 2013 in sheet of 8 stamps, and its customizable label dedicated to this twinning, representing the city halls of Chişinău and Iaşi.
That stamp represents a traditional ornament "Tree of Life" ("Pomul vieții") often represented in Moldovan craftsmanship, having inspired the new touristic brand of the Republic of Moldova.
The other stamp above (L 5.00) is part of a series dedicated to emblems of Moldovan cities (issued on March 7, 2015), Chişinău here.
The envelope used here (print run: 5,000), issued on January 2, 2016, is dedicated to the 580th anniversary of the founding of Chişinău with on the left, an illustration showing old photos of iconic city's landmarks : the same City Hall (c. 1900), Nativity Cathedral, Triomphal Arch, Ştefan cel Mare monument.

Nicolae has used two other stamps on the back of this envelope above including one (L 1.00) belonging to the same series dedicated to emblems of Moldovan cities, Ungheni here.
The other stamp (L 1.75) was issued on October 21, 2015 to pay tribute to actor Mihai Volontir (1934-2015), who died on September 15, 2015 at the age of 81.
The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union adopted on May 17, 2017 the decision proclaiming 2018, European Year of Cultural Heritage ("Anul european al patrimoniului cultural").
This European year is also celebrated outside the EU, what the postmark above to the left, put into circulation by the Post of Moldova from 2 January to 31 December 2018, reminds us.
This cancellation from Chişinău (MD-2012), designed by Lilian Iaţco, features in particular one of the female national costume elements, the traditional blouse called "ie", a Mărţişor (symbol of Spring) and a pottery.

EUROPA 2018 (Bridges) stamp set on FDC from Iceland

After Castles in 2017 and before National Birds in 2019, the theme chosen by PostEurop, the association of European public postal operators, for EUROPA stamps issued in 2018 is dedicated to bridges.
I'm happy to post my first letter concerning these EUROPA 2018 stamps, a nice First Day cover sent on February 15, 2018 from Reykjavík, capital of Iceland. Thank you very much Benedikt!
I like the simplicity of the cancellations, evoking the shape of a bridge, with only the mention "First Day" ("Útgáfudagur").
These two stamps (print run: 150,000 each, design: Borgar H. Árnason from photographs by Jonas Jacobsson and Hans-Olav Andersen) were printed by Cartor Security Printing in sheetlets of 10 self-adhesive stamps.

The stamp on the left ("50g to Europe", ISK 225) represents the footbridges over the estuary of the Elliðaá River, opened in September 2013, connecting them to a larger system in the Reykjavík metropolitan area. Measuring 4,5 m in width and 36 m in length for a height of the support structure of 18 m, these bridges represent a new era in transport with increased emphasis on diverse forms of transport.
The other stamp ("50g outside Europe", ISK 285) is dedicated to the suspension bridge over Jökulsá glacial river at Breiðamerkursandur, in the south-east of the island.
Started in 1966, the construction of this bridge (110 meters long, one of the longest in the country) lasted 9 months and it was inaugurated in 1967.

"Beer culture" stamp on FDC from Belgium

The beer culture in Belgium was inscribed in 2016 by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
According to UNESCO, "Making and appreciating beer is part of the living heritage of a range of communities throughout Belgium. It plays a role in daily life, as well as festive occasions.
Almost 1,500 types of beer are produced in the country using different fermentation methods. There are certain regions, which are known for their particular varieties while some Trappist communities have also been involved in beer production giving profits to charity.
In addition, beer is used for cooking including in the creation of products like beer-washed cheese and, as in the case of wine, can be paired with foods to compliment flavours".

The Belgian Post (bpost) has already dedicated many stamps to this beer culture in the past, particularly this interesting series (6 stamps) in 2012 featuring the 6 Belgian Trappist beers (Achel, Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren).
On January 29, 2018, a souvenir sheet (5 different stamps at the "1 World" tariff - € 1.35 at present, print run: 60,907 sheets) was put into circulation concerning this beer culture in Belgium.
One of these stamps is present on the nice cover above sent from the city of Wavre where took place the preview sale of this series on January 27, 2018. Thank you very much Johan!
Designed by Leen De Pooter, these 5 stamps evoke different themes around beer: the know-how, diversity, hop culture, beer and gastronomy, the social aspect.
The stamp devoted to hop culture (a plant adding bitterness and other flavours to beer and acting as a natural preservative and stabilizing agent) was used on this envelope, including 2 yellow hop cone pictograms, also present on the cancellation.

"Pyeongchang Olympics" stamp on FDC from Slovakia

Previous to a stamp dedicated to the Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang, issued on February 23, 2018, the Slovak Post put into circulation, on January 19, 2018, a stamp (€ 1.00, print run: 200,000, design: Peter Uchnár) on the theme of the Olympic Winter Games of Pyeongchang, organized from 9 to 25 February 2018 in South Korea.
A big thank you Miloš for this nice official FDC below regarding that stamp, with cancellations from Bratislava (pictograms of winter sports)!
To note that this stamp, representing a skier, does not mention these Pyeongchang Olympic Games but only the emblem of the Slovak Olympic Committee ("Slovenský Olympijský výbor").

The Slovak delegation consists of 56 athletes (15 women, 41 men) in Pyeongchang, engaged in 7 sports (alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, figure skating, snowboard, ice hockey and luge).
To date, Slovakia has achieved in Pyeongchang its best result since its first participation in the winter games in 1994, with 1 gold and 2 silver medals, all won by Anastasiya Kuzmina in biathlon (she was already Olympic champion in 2010 and 2014).
Since the Vancouver games in 2010, Slovakia has won all its medals in biathlon, hence this illustration on the envelope, dedicated to this sport...
The other stamp above (€ 0.10) is part of the nice definitive series (first Slovak series denominated in Euros) issued on January 2, 2009, dedicated to Romanesque art, to the church of Saint John the Baptist of Pominovce (12th century) here.

Tribute to painter Léonard Foujita on FDC from France

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of the French-Japanese painter Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita (1886-1968), the French Post has put into circulation, on January 29, 2017 (general sale), a stamp reproducing one of his works, "Le quai aux fleurs, Notre-Dame", painted in 1950, the year of his definitive return to Paris with his wife Kimiyo.
Foujita then donated this work to the National Museum of Modern Art - Pompidou Center in 1951.
That stamp (€ 1.90, print run: 600,000) is present on the First Day cover below, with cancellations from Paris (design: Angélique Andrillon of the communication agency "La p'tite agence"). Thank you very much Joël!
The same postmark was offered to the public on January 26, 2018 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Reims (he is the author of the chapel of Our Lady of Peace in this same city).

Student at the Fine Arts school in Tokyo, Foujita decided to settle in Paris in 1913. He quickly became friend with artists and writers such as Picasso, Braque, Max Jacob, Apollinaire, Kisling, Soutine and Modigliani.
Foujita will be one of the most original figures of the Montparnasse of the Roaring Twenties with his round glasses and black bangs and then will undertake many trips, including in his native Japan then will return to settle in Paris at the beginning of the year 1950 and will be naturalized French in 1955.
Influenced by Michelangelo, Poussin or Rodin, Foujita was successful with his personal style, his milk-white background that captures the light and subtle contours of his subjects in black ink.
Steeped in European modernity, he retained a sobriety and oriental precision, combining "the rigor of the Japanese trait to the freedom of Matisse", as he himself said.
Painter above all, Foujita was also a draftsman, illustrator, sculptor, ceramist, photographer, filmmaker, fashion designer and designer.
To note that a painting by Foujita ("Cat" 1926) had already been reproduced on a stamp of Wallis and Futuna in 1983.

"70 years of the promulgation of the constitution" m/s on cover from Italy

The Constituent Assembly of the Italian Republic was the active parliamentary chamber between June 25, 1946 and January 31, 1948, responsible for writing a constitution for the Italian Republic, which had just replaced the Kingdom of Italy after the civil war (having opposed the Royal Italian Army and the Italian Resistance to the members of the Fascist Italian Social Republic).
Adopted by 453 votes to 62, the Constitution of the Italian Republic was promulgated on December 27, 1947 and came into force on January 1, 1948.
On December 27, 2017, the Italian Post issued an interesting souvenir sheet consisting of a self-adhesive stamp (€ 0.95, design: Maria Carmela Perrini, print run: 400,000) dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the promulgation of this constitution.

This souvenir sheet and two extracted stamps were used to frank the letter above, with cancellations of the first day of issue from Cuneo (Piedmont region). Thank you very much Paolo!
The stamp was designed from a photograph taken during the promulgation of this constitution, representing in the center the provisional Head of State, Enrico De Nicola (who was the first president of the Republic between 1946 and 1948), with on the left the President of the Council, Alcide De Gasperi (head of government between 1945 and 1953, considered as one of the Fathers of Europe) and on the right the President of the Constituent Assembly, Umberto Terracini.
This signing ceremony took place in the library of the Palazzo Giustiniani in Rome, the current residence of the President of the Senate, official residence of Enrico De Nicola at the time.
The margins of this souvenir sheet represent the first and last page of this constitution, with the emblem of the Italian Republic at the top right and the logo of this 70th anniversary celebrations at the bottom left.

"National Day 2014 & 2015" stamps on cover from Bahrain

The Independence Day of Bahrain, this small archipelago located in the Persian Gulf, between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, is commemorated on August 15, marking the independence of the country (from United Kingdom) on August 15, 1971.
But the country, a kingdom since 2002, does not celebrate this date, the National Day taking place on December 16, marking the accession to the throne of emir Issa bin Salman Al Khalifa, 11th sovereign, on December 16, 1961.
Upon his death in 1999, his eldest son, Hamed bin Issa Al Khalifa, became the 12th ruler of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Every year, the Bahrain Post issues stamp sets on December 16 to celebrate this National Day.
The two stamps used on the cover above, sent on January 10, 2018 from Adliya, a district of the capital Manama, are part of these "National Day" series issued respectively in 2014 and 2015. Thank you very much Pierre!
As is the case on almost all the stamps issued by this country, the portrait of King Hamed bin Issa Al Khalifa is featured on these two stamps.
The stamp on the left (300 Fils) shows a map of the main island (the Hawar Islands, off Qatar, are artificially close, at the bottom right) with these two hands helping each other, on a Bahrain flag background.
The other stamp (400 Fils) evokes various recent architectural achievements, such as a part of the Sakhir motor racing circuit or this bridge project (45 km long) between Bahrain and Qatar, a project put in suspension following the breakdown of diplomatic relations between the 2 countries on June 5, 2017...

On the occasion of an exhibition organized in Fournival (Oise) from 11 to 13 November 2017 by the local association A3P (Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Heritage), dedicated to expeditionary forces ("corps expéditionnaires" in French) in 1914-1918, a temporary post office issued on November 13, 2017, a special cancellation on the same theme.
These expeditionary forces are troops formed by a country to intervene outside its borders, especially during the 1st World War, for example the Russian Expeditionary Force in France or the American Expeditionary Force (AEF), the name given to the American troops in Europe between 1917 and 1919.

During this same period, France has formed several expeditionary forces, in the East or the Dardanelles for example.
This "Expeditionary forces 1914-1918" postmark was applied on the attractive letter above, franked with a "MonTimbraMoi" personalized stamp ("Green Letter 20g") printed for the occasion (design: Estelle Revelin, initial print run: 120). Thank you very much Axel!
On that stamp, we identify the flags of France, Poland, United States of America, Portugal, United Kingdom, Russia.
I have a doubt about the last two flags that seem to correspond both to Bohemia (a Lion on a red background on the left and horizontal white and red stripes on the right)?

"Campaign for Organ Donation" stamp on FDC from Moldova

The Post of Moldova has dedicated its first stamp of the year 2018 (issued on January 11) to organ donation and in particular to this campaign of the Council of Europe entitled "Bring back hope" to encourage debate about organ donation and to increase organ, tissue and cell donation, by encouraging European citizens to help save lives.
That stamp (L 1.75, print run: 160,000), designed by Maria Maximenco, is featuring the emblem of this campaign, a heart composed of different organs and the mention "Speranţă pentru viaţă" ("Hope for life").
This theme is peculiar in Moldova, a country often in the news for its many cases of organ trafficking clandestine networks.

I was lucky to receive the official FDC (print run: 300) reagrding that stamp, with cancellations from Chişinău (MD-2012). Thank you very much Nicolae!
Nicolae also used the stamp (L 9.50), issued on June 4, 2017, paying tribute to the 4 crew members of a SMURD helicopter, the Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication based in Romania, which crashed on June 2, 2016 in the village of Haragîş, in southwestern Moldova.
In Moldova, as in the rest of Europe, too many patients die waiting for a transplant, what this campaign is reminding us (18 people die every day on average).
In 2015, 143,000 people were waiting for an organ donation and this campaign mentions that a single donor can save up to 8 lives with his organs and help up to 100 lives with his tissues!
This campaign finally reminds that, on average, 40% of families refuse to donate the organs of a recently deceased family member...
