Romania : 200 years of Fresnel's theory of wave optics

The Romanian Post is continuing its series of special cancellations devoted to the International Year of Light and light-based technologies ("Anul Internațional al Luminii" in Romanian).
The new postmark below, issued in Constanța on August 14, 2015, is this time commemorating the 200th anniversary of the theory of wave optics, developed by French engineer and physicist Augustin Jean Fresnel (1788-1827).
A big thank you Mihnea for this special illustrated envelope edited for the occasion by the association of philatelists "TOMIS" (the ancient Greek name of the town) of this city of Constanța, located in eastern Romania, on the Black Sea coast :-)

Augustin Jean Fresnel, who curiously was never honored with a stamp in France, is sometimes considered as the founder of modern optics, explaining in particular many optical phenomena in the context of his theory of wave optics, developed from 1815.
But Fresnel is also famous for having developed a new type of lens (called Fresnel lens) used to increase the power of lighting of lighthouses, what the left part of this envelope is reminding us, with the presence of the Genoese Lighthouse of Constanța, built in stones on the 14th century, restored in the 19th century and in operation until 1913.
The stamp (L 3.30) used above is part of a series of four stamps, issued on December 17, 2014, devoted to great inventors (Edison, Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci), Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) here, considered as a genius in the field of electricity, energy, wireless transmission and magnetism.

I have often written on this blog about this period of the 2nd World War when nearly 2,500 Czechoslovak left their country to fight against Nazi Germany in the British Royal Air Force (RAF).
These men and women indeed left Czechoslovakia to join Great Britain and be trained to become paratroopers or pilotes, most of them being dropped into the Moravian hills to provide supplies or propaganda of the Czech government in exile in England to the forces of the Resistance in the country.
Nearly 500 of them were killed in action...

At the end of the war, these combatants return in Prague on August 13, 1945 where they were welcomed as national heroes.
70 years after (to the day), a special illustrated cancellation (design : Ivan Vápenka) was put into circulation on 13 August (srpna) 2015 at the main post office of Prague 1, featuring an aircraft of this period as well as the mention in Czech "Návrat našich stíhačů z raf do vlasti" ("Return of our RAF fighters in the homeland").
This cancellation was applied to the letter above (thank you very much Slavek !) franked with the stamp (13 CZK) issued on November 5, 2014 to commemorate two anniversaries : the 75th anniversary of 17 November 1939 (closure of universities by Hitler after a student demonstration against the Nazi regime) and the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution of November 17th, 1989.

80th birth anniversary of opera singer Maria Bieșu in Moldova

80 years (to the day) after her birth in Volintiri (south-east of the country), the Post of Moldova has released on August 3, 2015, a special cancellation dedicated to the opera singer Maria Bieşu (1935-2012), one of the brightest contemporary Moldovan artists.
It is that postmark, put into circulation in Chișinău (MD-2012), which was applied on the illustrated envelope below (design : Maria Maximenco, print run : 5,000) printed specifically for the 80th anniversary of the birth of Maria Bieşu. Thank you very much Nicolae :-)
Maria Bieşu, university professor, academician, prima donna of the National Opera of Moldova and winner of many international contests, was awarded the Order of the Republic in 1992, the highest honor of the Republic of Moldova.

Maria Bieşu began her artistic career in 1960 in Moldova (a prepaid postcard was issued on this subject in 2010) but her opera singing's talent burst from 1965 when she worked at the La Scala theatre in Milan and played her first major roles in Italian, in the operas "Aida" and "Il Trovatore" by Verdi or "Madama Butterfly" by Puccini.
She then participated in many festivals and international competitions, winning in particular the title of best "Cio-Cio-San" (the first soprano role in the opera "Madama Butterfly") in the world in 1967 at the International "Miura Tamaki" canto contest.
The souvenir sheet above (L 6.20), issued on September 15, 2007, paid tribute to Maria Bieşu (while she was still living, which is very rare in Moldova) and particularly mentioned the 40th anniversary of that title of best "Cio-Cio-San" in the world (Maria Bieşu is featured in the role of this Geisha on the left illustration of this envelope).

To note that the Post of Moldova also released in 2002 a prepaid envelope celebrating the 35th anniversary of this title of best "Cio-Cio-San" in the world...
Barely four months after her death in Chişinău, a special "In Memoriam" stamp was issued on September 7, 2012 in her honor, again depicting her role of "Cio-Cio-San" in Puccini's opera.
It is that stamp (L 1.20) which was used to the left on the other side of this envelope above.
Nicolae also used two stamps on the right (L 2.00 and L 0.10) belonging to two definitive series respectively issued on March 20, 2013 (fruiting shrubs, sea buckthorn berries here) and March 7, 2015 (coats of arms of Moldovan cities, Căuşeni here).
Finally, to note that this total postage (L 9.50) corresponds exactly to a non-priority letter up to 20g sent to countries of zone A (of which France belongs).

2015 EUROPA stamp set from Ukraine

Pending Albania, Armenia or Kazakhstan, Ukraine is the latest country to have put into circulation this year its EUROPA series (on August 11, 2015) whose theme is devoted to old toys ("Давні іграшки "in Ukrainian).
As it was the case in previous years, this new EUROPA set consists of two stamps (UAH 4.80 and 5.40, print run : 130,000 each), designed by Serhii Kharuk and Oleksandr Kharuk.
These two stamps have been issued each in sheet of 9 stamps (with illustrated margins) as well as in the same souvenir sheet (the format of the stamps being a bit larger) issued in a booklet (print run : 13,000).

A big thank you Tolga for this nice letter above (the official First Day envelope) sent from Kiev on August 16, 2015, franked with this EUROPA series :-)
These two stamps are respectively featuring a wooden cart (with a horse's head) and a young girl on a swing, playing with a kind of rattle...
Two stamps are also part of the postage above, being part of the eighth definitive series (tree's leaves and fruits) issued for the first time on January 14, 2012.
The two stamps above, including years in microtext, were issued again on January 11, 2013 (UAH 2.50, maple) and June 7, 2015 (UAH 0.20, acacia).

Thank you very much also Alexander for this second cover above, sent on the first day of issue from the city of Dnipropetrovsk, also franked with these two 2015 EUROPA stamps (including sheet's margins) !
Alexander also used here the two se-tenant EUROPA stamps issued on April 30, 2010 (theme : children's books).
This series is devoted to the two children's tales  "Mare's Head" and "Gold Shoe" and includes the mention "В-во «А-БА-БА-ГА-ЛА-МА-ГА»", the name of a famous Ukrainian children's books publishing house.
The envelope above was issued on September 8, 2009 to commemorate the 100 years of the Kiev oblast's children's library.

Tribute to upright and incorruptible Bao Zheng in China

On July 24, 2015, China Post has issued a very nice series (2 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) devoted to Bao Zheng (999-1062), a judge and government officer during the Song Dynasty, well-known for having demonstrated extreme honesty and uprightness.
Bao Zheng is known as Bao Gong ("Lord Bao") in China.
During his lifetime, Bao was renowned for his filial piety, his strict attitude and intolerance for injustice and corruption.
Because of this reputation, Bao's name became synonymous with the idealized "honest and upright official" in China and quickly became a popular subject in Chinese literature or opera.

A big thank you Jia Yi for this beautiful cover above including this complete series (design : Chen Quansheng), with special postmarks from Shanghai dated August 8, 2015 :-)
This cancellation depicts the mask of the character of Bao Zheng in Beijing opera, black with a crescent moon on the front.
Black is the color of iron, symbol of incorruptibility, while the moon is yin, like the underworld, and recalls that Bao Gong has the power to descend into the underworld in dream and to conduct interrogations of victims or witnesses...
There are many stories featuring Bao Zheng, such as the "Wild Cat Exchanged for Crown Prince" or "The Case of Executing Chen Shimei" having love infidelity for theme.
This story seems to featured on the stamp above to the right, with the execution of a scholar, Chen Chimei, who became son-in-law of the emperor while he already had a wife...

2015 EUROPA stamp set from Norway

After a notable absence in 2014, Norway is back this year among the European countries issuing EUROPA stamps !
A series of two stamps (design : Madeleine M. Karlström) has actually been issued on June 5, 2015 devoted to the theme of old toys, dolls for girls (14 Kr) and small cars for boys (17 Kr) of course...
Thank you very much Rune for this nice letter sent from Hamar on August 18th, 2015, franked with this series :-)

Toys featured in this series have been imagined and manufactured by Åsmund S. Lærdal (1914-1981) who was at the origin of the toy industry in Norway in the first half of the 20th century.
He first created a publishing company in Stavanger in 1940 and published several picture books for children and various kinds of toys for girls and boys such as the three Anne dolls on the stamp above to the left, very popular in the years 1950s and 1960s, or these cars, called "Tomte toys", made in 1958 from a synthetic resin and PVC mix...
In total, more than 100 million of these cars were manufactured and sold worldwide in over 110 countries !
In order to better sell his toys, Åsmund S. Lærdal understood early the importance of marketing and advertising.

Singapore has its first UNESCO World Heritage site

During the last World Heritage Committee held in Bonn from 28 June to 8 July 2015, the Singapore Botanical Gardens became the first ever site of the country to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site !
I've already spoken on this blog about this garden created in 1859 on its current location under the leadership of the founding father of the city of Singapore (and also Emeritus naturalist), British Sir Stamford Raffles.
A nice set (4 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) had actually been issued in 2009 to mark the 150th anniversary of this garden, as well as ATM stamps in 2010...

On 7 August 2015, the SingPost has released two very large se-tenant stamps (120 mm x 40 mm) on the occasion of this registration of the botanical gardens at UNESCO.
A big thank you Terence for this wonderful First Day Cover regarding this series :-)
To note the FDC cancellation featuring the white bandstand also present on the top stamp above, as well as the standard cachet from the area of Paya Lebar where the Singapore Post Centre is located.
As it was the case for the series issued in 2009, these two stamps have been designed by graphic artist Eng Siak Loy, designer of the year in 2007 in Singapore.
UNESCO has registered these gardens as a World Heritage site because it demonstrates the evolution of a British tropical colonial botanical garden into a modern world-class garden, a scientific institution and a place for conservation and education...

Tribute to the authors of the Moldovan national anthem "Limba noastră"

Merci beaucoup Nicolae :-)
On 22 July 1995, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova officially decided that five stanzas (1, 2, 5, 8 and 12) of the poem "Limba noastră" ("Our Language") became the new anthem of the country, then replacing "Deșteaptă-te, române!"("Awaken thee, Romanian!"), the Romanian national anthem used between 1991 (independence of the country) and 1994.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the official adoption of this national anthem, the Post of Moldova has released on July 22, 2015, a special cancellation in Chișinău (MD-2012).
That postmark was applied to the letter below, a prepaid envelope (L 1.00, print run : 50,000) designed by Oleg Cojocaru, put into circulation on March 16, 2008. Thank you very much Nicolae :-)

This letter above is exceptional as it allows to pay tribute to the author of this poem "Limba noastră", Alexei Mateevici (1888-1917), as well as the composer of the music of this anthem, Alexandru Cristea (1890- 1942) !
This envelope was actually issued to mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of priest Alexei Mateevici priest, considered as one of the greatest poets of Bessarabia.
Many stamps or philatelic documents have been issued in the past by the Moldovan Post in honor of Mateevici, in particular a nice souvenir sheet issued in 2013.
Nicolae used above the souvenir sheet issued on July 17, 2015 in a series dedicated to famous personalities (about which I spoke recently on this blog), commemorating the 125th anniversary of the birth of Alexandru Cristea, composer, professor and conductor.
The document above is very special because the first verse of "Limba noastră" is included 3 times : on the envelope on the top left, on the bottom margin of the souvenir sheet as well as on the special postmark !

"ASEAN Community" joint stamp from Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam

During the Summit of Heads of State and Government of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) held in Singapore in 2007 to mark the 40th anniversary of the creation of this political organization, the establishment of an economic community between these 10 countries of Southeast Asia was decided.
A first joint issue (10 different stamps) was issued in 2007 by the 10 member countries.
This community, similar to the European Economic Community (EEC), will officially be launched on December 31, 2015, constituting an entity of 625 million people (9% of the world population) and the 7th largest economy in the world...
As a reminder, ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok in order to mainly develop the growth, economy and stability of this region.

To celebrate the upcoming creation of this ASEAN Community, the 10 ASEAN member countries (Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei) have decided to issue a joint stamp.
Following a stamp design contest (stamp and postmark), the proposal of the Vietnamese Post was chosen among 55 projects (30 stamps and 25 postmarks).
The official date of issue was August 8, 2015 to commemorate (to the day) the 48th anniversary of ASEAN.
A big thank you Terence for this beautiful mixed FDC above including 2 stamps from Singapore and 2 stamps from Malaysia with their respective cancellations (from Johor Bahru for Malaysia).
This envelope is interesting because the bottom part features some emblematic landmarks of the 10 ASEAN countries : Merlion (Singapore), Omar Ali Saifuddin mosque (Brunei), Petronas Towers (Malaysia), Ho Chi Minh mausoleum (Vietnam), Angkor Wat (Cambodia), Monas (Indonesia), Rizal monument (Philippines), Golden Rock (Myanmar), Wat Arun (Thailand) and Pha That Luang (Laos).

Thank you also to Minh for this other cover above franked with that same stamp (4 copies) issued by the Vietnamese Post :-)
To note that the cancellations (First Day's one from Hanoi and standard's one from Tan Dinh, a district of Ho Chi Minh City) are curiously dated August 7, 2015 while the official date is August 8, 2015 ?
That stamp depicts a flower including the flags of the 10 ASEAN member countries, with 2 pigeons in the background, one handshake at the bottom and golden ears of rice, symbol of agriculture, still very present in this region.
The emblem of ASEAN is included at the center of this flower (with the words "One Vision, One Identity, One Community") as well as on the FDC cancellation, surrounded by 3 lines symbolizing the "three pillars" of this new Community : politics and security, economics and socio-cultural aspect.
The small stamp on the top left is part of a definitive series (12 stamps) issued on May 15, 2009, depicting different types of bamboo lamps.

2015 EUROPA souvenir sheet from Sweden : beloved toys !

As it was the case in 2013 and 2014, the Sweden Post has again put into circulation this year (on March 26, 2015) its EUROPA series as souvenir sheet with two stamps (14 Kr each).
A big thank you Rune for this nice cover sent on August 14, 2015 from Torslanda (part of the municipality of Gothenburg), franked with this beautiful souvenir sheet designed by Eva Wilsson (from photographs by Per Myrehed) and partially engraved by Lars Sjööblom.
As a reminder, the theme chosen by PostEurop for these EUROPA series in 2015 is dedicated to "old toys" even if the Swedish Post has mentioned "Älskade Leksaker" ("beloved toys") on the top right on that sheet...

Sweden Post has chosen to feature on these two stamps as well as in the margin to the right, different toys manufactured in Sweden in the first half of the 20th century and belonging, for most of them, to the collections of the toy museum in Stockholm.
The upper stamp depicts a small figurine on a cast iron plane (manufactured by Skoglund & Olson, 1920s/1930s) while the second stamp shows a sheet metal horse on a 4-wheels board (probably manufactured by Enköpings Leksaksfabrik in 1910) as well as a hinged wooden donkey (Brio, 1950s).
Toys featured on the margin to the right : traffic signs (1930s/1940s), a sheet metal Volvo PV car (Brio, 1940s/1950s), a teddy bear made by Andy FalkHelsingborg (1940s/1950s), a sheet metal rail car (Skoglunds Fabriks AB Gnosjö, 1950s), a girl doll made from celluloid by Celloverken Vinninga (1940s/1950s) and several wooden houses (1930s/1940s).

New "Animals look at us" stamp booklet in France

I'm not a fan at all of the many booklets of self-adhesive stamps issued in France every year but I rather like the one issued on July 31, 2015, entitled "Animals look at us" ("Les animaux nous regardent").
This booklet (print run : 2.7 million, design : Corinne Salvi) consists of 12 stamps (permanent "Priority Letter 20g" rate, currently € 0.76) showing close-up eyes of various animals (6 birds, 2 fish, 3 reptiles, 1 amphibian).
The objective of this booklet is to remind us the importance of biodiversity on our planet and to consider the threats to some species (1 mammal in 4, 1 bird in 8 or 1 amphibian in 3 is currently threatened with extinction...).

A big thank you Roland for this nice cover above regrading one of the stamps of this booklet :-)
This cover was sent during the preview sale of this booklet at the "Carré d'Encre" in Paris, with a cancellation (also designed by Corinne Salvi) without any "First Day" mention as usual for booklets.
The stamp above shows an eye of Southern white-faced owl (Ptilopsis granti), a nocturnal owl species living in sub-Saharan Africa.
To note that this species is not considered particularly endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Here is above the cover and the 12 colorful stamps of this booklet !

Eminent persons on new stamp set from Moldova

As usual, the Post of Moldova has once again issued this year (on July 17, 2015) a series (4 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) devoted to famous personalities, from Moldova, Romania and Russia this time.
A big thank you Nicolae for these two official FDC below (print run : 500), with postmark from Chișinău (MD-2012), regarding this series, designed by Oleg Cojocaru.
The first stamp (L 1.20, print run : 100,000) celebrates Constanța Tîrțău (1930-2014), a Moldova theater and cinema actress, announcer of the first television broadcast of Radio Moldova 1 in 1958.
Constanţa Tîrţău, whose end of life was very difficult (almost ruined and blind, refusing to see people...) remained very popular in the hearts of Moldovan people.

Gică Petrescu (1915-2006) featured on the L 1.75 stamp (print run : 50,000), was a Romanian singer, very popular in his country and in neighboring Moldova. He sang several types of music but remained the master of the Romanian folk music.
Nicolae Corlăteanu (1915-2005), whose portrait appears on the L 4.00 stamp (print run : 100,000) was a Moldovan writer, professor and academician, having published nearly 500 works mainly devoted to language (including a Romanian-Russian dictionary) and lexicology.
Romantic Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), famous for the ballets "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker" is finally honored on the last stamp above (L 11.00, print run : 50,000) to mark the 175th anniversary of his birth.

To note that other postal administrations have issued or will issue stamps also dedicated this year to Tchaikovsky (Monaco, Macedonia, Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sarajevo), Kyrgyz Express Post or more exotic countries such as Maldives, Guinea or Guinea-Bissau...).
The souvenir sheet above is devoted to Alexandru Cristea (1890-1942) to mark the 125th anniversary of his birth.
Alexandru Cristea, professor, composer and conductor, is best known for having composed the music of "Limba noastră" ("Our language"), a poem written by Alexei Mateevici, the current national anthem of the Republic of Moldova (since 1995).
The first verse of that anthem "Limba noastră-i o comoară - În adîncuri înfundată - Un șirag de piatră rară - Pe moșie revărsată" ("A treasure is our language that surges - From deep shadows of the past - Chain of precious stones that scattered - All over our ancient land") is included in the bottom margin of that sheet.

Euromed Postal and ITU's 150 anniversary stamps on new cover from Croatia

As already mentioned on this blog, many postal administrations have already issued this year stamps or other philatelic products dedicated to the 150th anniversary of ITU (International Telecommunication Union) : Malaysia, Romania, Serbia, Monaco, Uruguay, Bangladesh, Vatican, Switzerland, Thailand, Bulgaria, Russia, Moldova, Kuwait, Portugal, Brazil, Georgia, Egypt...
On 15 May 2015, the Croatian Post has also put into circulation a special stamp (10 kn, print run : 100,000) designed by Dubravka Zglavnik, devoted to the 150th anniversary of ITU, the oldest specialized agency of the United Nations, dedicated to the development of information and communication technologies.
Croatia is, since 1992, one of the 193 full member states of ITU.

It is that stamp which was used on the right on this nice cover sent from Split on August 7, 2015. Thank you very much Edin :-)
That stamp, including the logo of this 150th anniversary, evokes the beginnings of telecommunications with this candlestick telephone, common in the early 20th century (until 1940) with a current globalized digital world in the background.
The other stamp (5.80 kn) and its adjoining label, issued on July 9, 2015, is the Croatian contribution (a first !) to the joint "Euromed Postal" series of this year having the "Boats of the Mediterranean" for topic.
Designed by Dean Roksandić, that stamp (print run : 150,000) depicts a type of boat called "Bracera", typical of the Adriatic Sea since the 16th century, having almost disappeared today.
A replica built in 2011 (reproduced on that stamp ?), called "Our Lady of the Sea", is today sailing Dubrovnik waters in order to promote the Croatian maritime heritage.
To date, 10 other postal administrations have issued the same kind of joint stamp this year : Morocco, Palestine, Slovenia, Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Portugal and Tunisia (also a first for these two countries).

Virgin of Meritxell and EUROPA 2015 stamp on cover from Andorra

Thank you very much Josep for this nice letter posted on August 7, 2015 in a mailbox of Andorra la Vella, managed by the Spanish Post :-)
The stamp ont the left (€ 0.90, print run : 90,000), issued on April 23, 2015, is the EUROPA stamp issued this year by the Spanish Post in Andorra, whose theme is devoted to old toys.
A spinning top ("Baldufa" in Catalan) is depicted on that stamp, consisting of a metal body and a launch system using a wire, being part of the collections of the Toy Museum of Catalonia in Figueres.
Spinning top is a universal and very old toy (this kind of toy was found during archaeological excavations in Egypt or Mesopotamia).

The other stamp on the right (permanent rate "A", currently € 0.42), issued on January 13, 2015, is dedicated to Romanesque art ("El Romànic") in Andorra, to the statue of the Virgin of Meritxell, patron saint of the Principality in particular.
Andorra is indeed characterized by a rich Romanesque heritage, with about forty remarkable pre-Romanesque or Romanesque churches and chapels (dating from the 11th and 12th century).
Eight of these churches are included on an indicative list proposed by the Principality of Andorra to be listed as World Heritage site by UNESCO.
The French and Spanish Posts in Andorra have already issued many stamps in the past devoted to Romanesque Art and especially a beautiful joint souvenir sheet in 2010.
The original wooden statue of this Virgin of Meritxell, dating from the 12th century, was destroyed during the burning of Meritxell sanctuary in 1972.
This statue was also already featured on stamps several times, for example in 1995 and 2007 by the French Post in Andorra...

Moldova : 40th anniversary of Helsinki Final Act's signing

On August 1, 1975, 35 countries (USSR, USA and most European states) met in Helsinki and signed the Helsinki Accords (or Helsinki Final Act), a text aimed at improving relations between the Communist bloc and the West.
This text consisting of 10 articles (about the territorial integrity of states, non-intervention in internal affairs, respect for human rights, cooperation, refraining from the threat or use of force...) served as a basis for defining the scope and action principles of the CSCE (Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe), becoming the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) in 1995.
On July 30, 2015, the Post of Moldova released a new stamp (L 11) dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the signing of these Helsinki Accords.

That stamp (print run : 200,000), designed by Vitaliu Pogolşa, appears on the official FDC above (print run : 300) with cancellations from Chișinău (MD-2012). Thank you very much Nicolae :-)
The official logo of this 40th anniversary (the blue and white colors probably reminding the Finnish flag) is included on that stamp while the FDC postmark includes the OSCE's one.
To note that the Post of Moldova had issued two stamps in 1992 to mark the country's accession to OSCE (Moldova signed these Helsinki Accords on February 26, 1992).
The lower part of the stamp shows a part of the heads of state during the signing ceremony of this Helsinki Final Act in 1975, in particular Helmut Schmidt (West Germany), Erich Honecker (East Germany) and Gerald Ford (USA).
The left side of the envelope shows the famous Finlandia Hall (designed by Alvar Aalto) in which these Helsinki Accords were signed as well as the Imperial Hofburg Palace in Vienna, current seat of the OSCE Permanent Council.

Czech prepaid card devoted to the 2015 Essen Stamp Exhibition

From 7 to 9 May 2015 took place as every year the International Stamp Exhibition (25th edition) organized in Essen, Germany.
Many foreign postal administrations were present at this philatelic exhibition and in particular the Czech Post that has put into circulation for the occasion (as it was done in recent years) a special prepaid card (permanent rate "E" for a shipment up to 50g to Europe, currently 25 CZK).

It is that card Bret was kind enough to send me from Prague with a cancellation of the first day of issue, May 7, 2015.
Designed by Irena Vyčítalová, this card, printed in 2,500 copies and sold at a price of 30 CZK, is including (top right) the illustration of a Czechoslovak stamp (postal stagecoach on the Charles Bridge) issued in 1966 at the occasion of a stamp exhibition in Prague.
This card, including the words "PostFila Prag" (the Czech Post "Philately" special department), is featuring an illustration to the left, a graphic artwork (collage) made from extracts of old handwritten letters and a photograph showing a woman reading the mail...

9th Indian Ocean Islands Games - FDC from Mauritius

From 1 to August 8, 2015, the island of Reunion organized (for the 3rd time) the Indian Ocean Islands Games, a multi-sport event for athletes coming from seven islands, located mainly in the southwest Indian Ocean : Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar, Maldives and the two French islands of Mayotte and Reunion.
These games are held every four years since 1979, and this 2015 edition is the ninth one, the next edition should normally be organized in 2019 in the Comoros. To note that Sri Lanka, initially involved in these games, finally never participated...
As it was the case in 1985 and 2003 when Mauritius organized these games, the Mauritius Post has put into circulation on August 1, 2015, a stamp (Rs 17) devoted to the 9th edition of these games.
A big thank you David for this official FDC below regarding that stamp, in 2 copies here :-)

To note that, since 2012, the Mauritian Post no longer uses FDC illustrated cancellations but only conventional postmarks including the words "First Day of Issue", the hour and date, and the word "Mauritius" without more precise indication of place...
Thanks to the second postmark above, I know that this FDC was distributed by the Waterfront post office in Port Louis.
That stamp simply reproduces the logo of these games in the island of Reunion, with the title of these games written in French.
The left side of this envelope allows to locate the 7 participating islands in the Indian Ocean, while the lower band shows the mascot of these games, TiBayoun (a kind of hedgehog) in the 14 sports of the games.
The island of Réunion finished these games at the 1st rank (209 medals), ahead Mauritius and Madagascar, Comoros finishing in last place (0 medal) because this delegation left the games from the opening ceremony, after that the Mayotte delegation walked behind the French flag instead of the flag of the games (as stipulated in the Islands Games Charter)...

Sweden-Denmark "WWF charity" joint stamp issue

PostNord AB (its name was changed to become PostNord in 2011) is the name of the holding company resulting from the merger of the two postal administrations of Sweden (Posten AB) and Denmark (Post Danmark) in June 2009.
This company, with around 50,000 employees, is controlled by the Swedish state (60%) and the Danish state (40%).
Despite this common entity, the two countries decide each of their stamp issuing policy.
On May 7, 2015, an attractive joint set (2 self-adhesive stamps) was issued by the two countries, including for the first time the postnord's logo !
I was lucky to receive the Swedish and Danish versions of this joint series on the two covers below. Thank you very much Rune and Peter :-)

Each country has issued these two stamps (designed by the two PostNord graphic artists Ditte Rosenørn Holm and Gustav Mårtensson) in a booklet composed of 10 stamps (6 "fallow deer - protecting our environment" stamps and 4 "wind turbine for a sustainable development" stamps).
These two stamps are actually a charity series with profits from the sale going to WWF (1 Swedish or Danish Krone per stamp).
The objective is to support the WWF, in particular its actions to fight against global warming and for the organization each year of the "Earth Hour" event.
To note on the Swedish letter above, sent from the city of Torslanda on August 14, 2015, the application of a mechanical cancellation (on Sunday, August 16 ??) in Gothenburg, including the words "Glad sommar!" ("Happy summer!") and PostNord :-)

The Danish version of this series was used on the 2nd letter above sent from Copenhagen on July 3, 2015.
The famous WWF "Panda" logo is included on each stamp, at the bottom left, as well as the mention "For the environment's sake" respectively in Swedish ("For miljöns skull") and Danish ("For miljøets skyld").
To note also the presence of two security features on these two stamps : the word "PostNord" punched on the right side and an irregular perforation (top and bottom).
These four stamps are really identical so I guess they were printed in the same place (maybe PostNord's printing house in Sweden located in Kista, north of Stockholm ?)...

In a message published on May 25, 2015, I spoke about the special postmark issued on May 1, 2015 at the occasion of the beginning of the 150th season of the Prague Steamboat Company ("150. sezóna Pražské paroplavební společnosti").
As a reminder, today, two steamboats ("Vyšehrad" and "Vltava") allow tourists to make in one day a round trip on the Vltava river between Prague and the dam of Slapy (30 km south of Prague), passing through beautiful landscapes and the towns of Měchenice, Davle and Štěchovice.

On June 16, 2015, a new postmark (design : Miloslav Bláha) on the same topic was put into circulation in a temporary post office located in the National Technical Museum ("Národní technické muzeum") located in Prague 7.
It is that cancellation, including the logo of the Prague Steamboat Company "PPS" ("Pražská Paroplavební Společnost"), which was applied on the special card above. Thank you very much Bret :-)
The stamp (25 CZK) issued on June 11, 2014, was part of a series of two stamps devoted to historical means of transport, the passenger paddle steamboat Franz Joseph I here.
As a reminder, this boat, with a full capacity of 800 passengers, belonged also to the Prague Steamboat Company and travelled in particular on the Prague-Zbraslav-Štěchovice crowded line from 1880.

That same paddle steamboat Franz Joseph I is featured on the vintage photograph reproduced on the other side of this card above !
On the occasion of this 150th anniversary, an exhibition is organized from 16 June to 1 November 2015 in the National Technical Museum in Prague.
