"Moon landing cover" postmark on postal stationery and cover from Czech Republic

On the occasion of the Autumn "Sběratel" Collectors' Fair ("Podzimní veletrh Sběratel"), held in Prague on September 5th and 6th, 2025, the Czech Post put into circulation a special postmark dedicated to a rare philatelic item: a letter that traveled to the moon during the Apollo 15 mission in 1971, which was on display at the event.
This "Moon Landing Cover" postmark, depicting a letter in front of the moon, was applied on September 6, 2025, to the postal stationery below (permanent rate "B" - standard domestic mail up to 50g in economy mode - currently 31 CZK), which was put into circulation on September 3rd, 2025. Thank you very much, Slavek!
The illustration on the left shows this famous letter that traveled to the moon in 1971.
In 1971, the Apollo 15 crew secretly took 400 envelopes to the moon, 100 of which were addressed to the German philatelist Hermann Walter Sieger. This initiative was motivated by profit: each astronaut was to receive $7,000, a considerable sum at the time. Sieger was not to sell them, however, until after the astronauts had retired from the space program.

The envelopes were stamped multiple times (notably with the "First Man on the Moon" stamp issued in 1969) and then concealed inside Commander David Scott's spacesuit. Only 100 of these envelopes physically reached the Moon, and two were officially delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. Upon their return, they were stamped and notarized to give them historical and collector value.
However, Sieger broke the agreement and immediately began selling the envelopes, causing a scandal.
Under pressure from Congress, NASA sanctioned the astronauts: they were removed from the Apollo program and forced to reimburse the money. In 1983, Alfred Worden, a member of the Apollo 15 mission, sued the U.S. government and obtained the return of the confiscated envelopes.
Today, the so-called "Sieger envelopes" are extremely rare. In 2024, one of them was acquired by the Czech philatelist David Kopřiva. This was the letter that was exhibited at this "Sběratel" Collectors' Fair.

This same postmark was applied to the cover above, which includes three identical stamps (16 CZK) issued on November 8, 2017, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Czech Astronomical Society ("Česká astronomická společnost").
This stamp (design: Vladimír Suchánek) depicts a starry sky above an observatory (apparently the Štefánik Observatory, founded in 1928 in Prague).
The Czech Astronomical Society, founded on December 8, 1917, is a voluntary association of professional and scientific astronomers, amateur astronomers, and members of the public interested in astronomy. Its aim is to popularize science, particularly through events  such as the "
European Researchers’ Night" or "Science on the Streets".

"The Wonder of the Universe" souvenir sheet on cover from Sri Lanka

On September 25, 2025, the Sri Lankan postal administration released a beautiful series (ten LKR 50.00 stamps, print run: 300,000 each) entitled "The Wonder of the Universe", illustrating various spectacular elements and phenomena observed in the vastness of the universe.
These 10 round-shaped stamps have also been printed in a souvenir sheet (print run: 10,000), with two central labels, used on the cover below, sent on October 21, 2025, from Ampara, a city in the east of the island. Thank you so much, Sashika!
The first stamp features the Pillars of Creation, a famous image of interstellar dust columns taken in 1995 by the Hubble Space Telescope. The structure is located approximately 7,000 light-years from Earth in the Eagle Nebula, at the heart of the open cluster M16.
The next stamp depicts a total solar eclipse, while the third stamp shows Sagittarius A*, a supermassive black hole at the galactic center of the Milky Way, with a mass of approximately 4.3 million solar masses, and an intense radio source located in the direction of the zodiac constellation Sagittarius.
The fourth stamp features the Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, a spiral galaxy located approximately 2.55 million light-years from the Sun in the constellation Andromeda.

The fifth stamp depicts the Crab Nebula, a pulsar wind nebula and supernova remnant in the constellation Taurus, in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way. It and its central Crab Pulsar resulted from the explosion of the massive star SN 1054 as a historic supernova, observed around 1055 by Chinese astronomers during the Song Dynasty.
The Orion Nebula (M42), a diffuse nebula that shines in both emission and reflection in the heart of the constellation Orion in the Orion Arm of the Milky Way, is illustrated on the following stamp. It is one of the most spectacular nebulae, and the most intense nebula visible from the Northern Hemisphere, observable with binoculars.
The next stamp features the Great Red Spot, a gigantic anticyclone in Jupiter's atmosphere. Approximately 15,000 kilometers long and nearly 12,000 kilometers wide, it is currently slightly larger than Earth. Winds blow at around 700 km/h.
Stephan's Quintet, a visual grouping of five galaxies located in the constellation Pegasus, discovered by the French astronomer Édouard Stephan at the end of the 19th century, is featured on the 8th stamp.
The Pleiades star cluster (M45), an open cluster of stars (approximately 3,000) visible to the naked eye from both hemispheres, in the constellation Taurus, is depicted on the 9th stamp.
The last stamp shows the rings of Saturn, the most prominent planetary rings in the Solar System, first observed by Galileo in 1610.

"150 years since the birth of astronomer Nicolae Donici" postmark on card from Moldova

On September 13, 2024, the Post of Moldova put into circulation a special postmark dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the astronomer and astrophysicist Nicolae Donici (1874-1956), sometimes nicknamed the "Einstein of Moldova".
At the age of 21, he devoted himself to astronomical research, focusing his observations mainly on the Sun and the Moon. He developed a spectroheliograph that was the most efficient in Europe after the First World War.
In 1913, he was elected a member of the International Union for Solar Research, being then the Russian representative to the "Eclipses" Commission. He left Bessarabia in 1940 to continue his research in Germany and France (Meudon Observatory).
His main work concerned the solar spectrum, comets, and the planet Saturn. He is also responsible for unique photographs of solar prominences and he also studied the phenomenon of the extension of the Earth's shadow on the Moon during solar eclipses.
A star, asteroid 9494 discovered in 1971, was named after him.

This postmark, designed by Veronica Coroli, was applied by the main post office in Chișinău (MD-2012) on the card above. Thank you very much Nicolae!
The stamp on the top right (4.20 L) is part of the EUROPA series (design: Vitaliu Pogolșa) issued on May 7, 2009, illustrating that year the theme of astronomy, in the framework of the International Year of Astronomy that commemorated the 400th anniversary of the first observations made with an astronomical telescope, by Galileo (1564-1642) in particular.
This stamp was dedicated to Nicolae Donici, including his portrait and the astronomical observatory he created in his village of Dubăsarii-Vechi in 1908.
Galileo was featured on the 2nd EUROPA stamp (4.50 L) of this series, used at the bottom left on this same card.
The 3rd stamp above (3.30 L) is part of a series "Children's Drawings" (2 stamps), issued on December 8, 2023, reproducing here a drawing by Bianca Bandalac (13 years old) entitled "Generation of equality of different peoples".

On the occasion of the issue of this EUROPA 2009 series, the Post of Moldova had also put into circulation two postcards (print run: 2,000 each) dedicated respectively to Galileo and Nicolae Donici. It is this last card (back above) that Nicolae used.
It should be noted that the Post of Moldova had already issued, in 2003, a stamp paying tribute to Nicolae Donici and that the Romanian Post put into circulation in 2024 a prepaid envelope to also celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth.

On September 14, 2021, the Ukrainian Post issued a stamp (tariff "V" for non-priority domestic letter up to 50g, 9 UAH) dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the astronomical observatory of the Ivan-Franko National University of Lviv.
This stamp (design: I. Medvedovska, print run: 130,000), printed in sheetlet consisting of 9 stamps, is present on the nice official FDC (print run: 2,500) below, with postmark from Lviv. Thank you very much Roman!
This astronomical observatory of the University of Lviv was founded in 1771 by the Jesuit College in Lviv, making it the 17th oldest observatory in Europe.
It was closed around 1783 and restored as part of the University of Lviv in 1900 as an Institute of Astronomy and again as an Observatory in 1912.
Scientific operations were interrupted by World War II, and then the astronomical observatory became part of the University of Lviv in 1945.

This observatory now allows research work on observational and theoretical studies in cosmology, relativistic astrophysics and stellar astrophysics.
Lviv University is the oldest higher education institution in present-day Ukraine, founded in 1661 when John II Casimir, King of Poland, granted it his first royal charter. In 1940, the university was named after Ivan Franko (1856-1916), considered (along with Taras Shevchenko) as one of the most influential authors of Ukrainian literature and political thought during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Roman completed his postage with 3 identical stamps, part of the definitive series issued since 2017 by Ukrainian Post, dedicated to coats of arms of country's towns and villages, Shatsk here ("X", 20 UAH, issued on December 31, 2018), located in the north-west of the country, not far from Poland and Belarus.

"Solar System" minisheet on FDC from Brazil

Like India or Australia before (among others), the postal administration of Brazil put into circulation, on February 29, 2020, an interesting minisheet dedicated to our Solar System, composed of 9 stamps and 3 labels.
Designed by Meik, this minisheet (print run: 450,000) printed with a special spot varnish (orbits of the planets around the sun in particular), is present on this letter sent by registered mail on June 24, 2021 from São Paulo, with First Day cancellations from Brasilia (the same postmark was put into circulation in Rio de Janeiro). Thank you very much Marcelo!
The Solar System is the planetary system of the Sun, made up of this star and the celestial objects orbiting around it: the 8 confirmed planets (including the Earth) and their 214 known natural satellites, the five dwarf planets (including Pluto) and their nine known satellites, as well as billions of small celestial bodies (asteroids, minor planets, comets ...).

Part of the galaxy called the Milky Way, the Solar System is made up of the Sun (R$ 2.25 stamp at the bottom left), which gravitationally dominates it and provides energy by nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium.
In order of increasing distance from the Sun, the Solar System comprises four internal terrestrial planets, mainly composed of rocks and metals (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars depicted on the R$ 0.20, R$ 0.50, R$ 1.35 and R$ 0.35 stamps) then an asteroid belt of small rocky bodies, including the dwarf planet Ceres. To note that the Earth is represented on the stamp with its satellite, the Moon.
Further on, the four giant planets of the Outer Solar System orbit: two gaseous giants consisting mainly of hydrogen and helium, Jupiter and Saturn (shown on the R$ 2.25 and R$ 2.00 stamps) and two ice giants that are Uranus and Neptune (shown on the R$ 2.00 and R$ 1.35 stamps).
To note also the presence of the 5 dwarf planets of our solar system, Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris) in the upper margin of this sheet (top right) as well as on one of the 3 labels (Ceres).

"Astronomical phenomena" stamp set on FDCs from Taiwan

In order to encourage people to understand astronomical phenomena, the Chunghwa Post of Taiwan released on June 21, 2020, an interesting series consisting of 4 stamps and a souvenir sheet.
These 4 stamps (print run: 648,000, design: Delta Design Corporation) were each printed in a sheet made up of 18 stamps as well as in a single souvenir sheet (print run: 620,000 souvenir sheets).
A big thank you George for these 5 splendid covers each concerning this souvenir sheet and these 4 stamps (in 2 copies), canceled with specific postmarks put into circulation on the first day of issue in 4 different Taiwanese cities!

The souvenir sheet above (with part of the Milky Way in the background?) therefore brings together the 4 stamps of this pretty series, respectively evoking an annular solar eclipse, a comet, a total solar eclipse and a total lunar eclipse.
The postmark above (annular solar eclipse) was applied by a temporary office set up in the Taipei Astronomical Museum.

This same postmark was applied on the cover above including 2 copies of the "annular solar eclipse" stamp (NT $ 6).
An annular solar eclipse occurs when the sun and moon are perfectly aligned with the Earth, but the apparent size of the moon is slightly smaller than that of the sun, i.e. the sun appears as a very shining ring surrounding the lunar disk.
To note that an annular solar eclipse took place on June 21, 2020 (the 15th annular eclipse of the 21st century), the first day of issue of this stamp set, starting in Central Africa, then crossing Asia (including Taiwan) to finish in the Pacific Ocean.

A comet is depicted with a starry sky in background on the 2nd stamp of this set above (NT $ 6), with a cancellation applied here by the Central Taiwan Nantou post office.
Comets are small bodies in the solar system. Those in an elliptical orbit will return after circling the sun and are called periodic comets, such as famous Halley comet, which returns about every 76 years.
Several comets were observed in 2020 such as C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) or C/2020 F8 (SWAN).

A total solar eclipse is shown on the 2 stamps above (NT $ 8), with an associated postmark applied by the Xinzhu Wuzhang post office.
A total eclipse occurs when the sun is completely obscured by the moon. The intensely luminous solar disk is replaced by a black lunar silhouette, and most of the solar corona is visible.
Such an eclipse usually only lasts a few minutes. The sky darkens as if night had fallen.

The last stamp in this series above (NT $ 8) evokes the different phases of a total lunar eclipse, with cancellations from the Taizhong post office.
When the Sun, Earth, and Moon are in almost perfect alignment and the Moon falls completely into Earth's shadow, a total lunar eclipse occurs.
At such times, only the longer wavelength red light from the sun shines on the moon by refraction through the Earth's atmosphere, producing a deep red appearance.

"Centenary of the Solar Eclipse in Sobral" stamp on FDC from Brazil

The year 2019 marks the centenary of the solar eclipse observed on May 29, 1919, which was an extraordinary event for science.
The measure of the starlight deflection by the Sun indeed confirmed Einstein's General Relativity Theory that deeply changed our conception of the Universe.
Decisive observations were done in Sobral (Ceará), Brazil and also on Principe Island, by British astronomers. The results were publicly disclosed in London on November 6, 1919 marking a revolution in science: Einstein's theory had supplanted Newton's gravitational theory.
That event made Einstein, a scientist formerly known only to his colleagues, the best-known scientist of all time!

On May 29, 2019, the Brazilian Post Correios commemorated the 100th anniversary of the observation of this solar eclipse in Sobral by issuing a stamp (R $ 2.15, print run: 240,000) designed by Rodrigo Cassaro, a member of the National Observatory.
This stamp is present in two copies on this nice letter sent on August 22, 2019 from São Paulo (SPM = São Paulo Metropolitan), with the First Day cancellation from Sobral. Thank you very much Marcelo!
This stamp was designed from a photograph of this eclipse by the British astrophysicist Arthur Stanley Eddington and another one (unclear I find) in the lower part, representing the preparation of the observation teams that day ...
During this eclipse, the longest in 500 years (total time of almost seven minutes), the sun was located in the constellation Taurus, among the Hyades star cluster, which provided a rich background of brighter stars that might be captured in the images.
In the end, Eddington found that the stars appearing near the Sun had indeed deviated from the positions shown on celestial charts (what is schematized on the First Day postmark) so Einstein was right!

40th anniversary of the first "Space Mail" - prepaid card from Czech Rep.

Merci beaucoup Slavek !
On March 1, 2018, the Czech Post put into circulation a new postal stationery ("A" rate for domestic mail up to 50g - 19 CZK at present) dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the first Space Mail ("40. výročí zahájení Kosmické pošty").
"Space mail" means the transport of a stamped letter in space, in this case during the Soviet Soyuz 28 mission, a capsule that took off on March 2, 1978 from Baikonour with two cosmonauts on board who joined the space station Salyut 6, in orbit with a resident crew (Soyuz 26).
I was lucky enough to receive this card (design: Petr Prušek, print run: 3,500) with its associated special postmark from Prague dated March 2, 2018. Thank you very much Slavek!

The illustration on the left shows this 1st letter sent to space, dated March 8, 1978, with the signatures of the two crew members of Soyuz 28, the Soviet Aleksei Gubarev (commander of the mission) and Czechoslovak Vladimír Remek (born in 1948).
During this mission, the first one of the Intercosmos program (partnership between USSR and Eastern Europe countries), Vladimír Remek was the first man to go into space by being neither Soviet nor American.
The crew of the Soyuz 26 mission, already present in the station Salyut 6, Georgi Grechko and Yuri Romanenko, also signed on this envelope, franked with one of the six stamps of a series issued in 1977, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the first Earth's artificial satellite, Sputnik 1.

Another stamp (16 CZK) was used on the back of this postal stationary above, issued on November 8, 2017 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czech Astronomical Society.

Bret (thank you very much!) also sent me the "mint" version of this card above.
The pre-printed stamp represents the historical logo of the Czechoslovak communication sector "ČS SPOJE" as well as a satellite (or a space station?) in orbit.

85th birthday of graphic artist Vladimír Suchánek - Special Czech postmark

On February 12, 2018, the main post office of Prague 1 put into circulation a new special postmark on the occasion of the 85th anniversary (day to day) of the famous Czech graphic artist and stamp designer, Vladimír Suchánek (born in 1933).
Vladimír Suchánek designed 27 stamps for the Czech Post between 1996 and 2018, including the definitive series devoted to the 12 signs of the zodiac.
His first stamp (in 1996) was dedicated to photographer Josef Sudek and the most recent (in 2018) paid tribute to another graphic and stamp designer, Jiří Bouda.

This postmark, designed by Jiří Slíva, was applied on the very nice letter above, franked with two identical stamps (16 CZK), created by Vladimír Suchánek, issued on November 8, 2017 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czech Astronomical Society.
To note this additional label (5 CZK) to reach the current tariff (35 CZK) for a priority shipment up to 50g to European countries.
This postmarks depicts a composition consisting of a clarinet, a dip pen and a score of the song "Happy Birthday".

Bret was kind enough to send me the commemorative sheet above including the same postmark, with the stamp (16 CZK, design: Vladimír Suchánek) issued on May 18, 2016, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the first performance of the comic opera "The Bartered Bride", work by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884).
This sheet, numbered between 0168701 and 0170400, was published at only 1,700 copies.

"100 years of the Czech Astronomical Society" stamp on FDC from Prague

On November 8, 2017, the Czech Post issued a stamp (16 CZK) devoted to the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Czech Astronomical Society ("Česká astronomická společnost").
That stamp (design: Vladimír Suchánek), representing a starry sky above an observatory (the Štefánik's observatory it seems, founded in 1928 in Prague), is present on the official FDC below (print run: 3,500 ) with cancellation from Prague. Thank you very much Bret!
I really like the illustration on this envelope (sun and moon), an engraving by Bohumil Šneider.
This Czech Astronomical Society, founded on December 8, 1917, is a voluntary association of professional and scientific astronomers, amateur astronomers and members of the public interested in astronomy.

On November 8, 2017, the Czech Post put into circulation 2 new sets of stamps, in particular 2 new stamps in the splendid series "Works of art on postage stamps" devoted respectively to a painting "Tempter" by Norbert Grund (1717-1767) preserved in the National Gallery of Prague and a work (nude woman) of 1972 by the photographer Taras Kuščynskyj (1932-1983).
These 2 stamps (32 and 38 CZK), printed in sheetlet of 4 stamps, have been used to frank the beautiful letter below sent by registered mail from Prague on the first day of issue. Thank you very much Bret!
I will write again soon on this blog about these 2 stamps of the artistic series.

A third stamp (16 CZK) was issued on November 8, 2017, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Czech Astronomical Society, also present on this letter on the top left.
A 4th commemorative stamp (10 CZK) composes this postage, issued on April 6, 2011 to commemorate 200 years of teaching at the Prague Conservatory (music, song, theater, dance).

EUROPA 2009 (Astronomy) stamp set from Albania

Merci beaucoup Sabri !
The year 2009 was declared "International Year of Astronomy" by the United Nations and this topic of astronomy was also chosen by the postal organization PostEurop for the EUROPA stamps issued that same year.
The Albanian Post, participating in these CEPT and EUROPA issues since 1992, had issued on December 11, 2009, an EUROPA series consisting of two stamps and one numbered souvenir sheet devoted to this theme of astronomy.
This complete set (design : Spiro Vllahu) was used to frank the nice cover below sent by registered mail on January 20, 2016 from Tirana. Thank you very much Sabri !

The two stamps (200 and 250 lekë) were each issued in sheetlet of 10 stamps as well as in a booklet (print run : 6,000 only) also including the souvenir sheet (350 lekë).
I'm not sure of identifying all modules, spacecraft or celestial bodies present on this series, in particular (on the souvenir sheet) a view of the Earth from the Moon with the presence of the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM), the spacecraft used during the American Apollo space program from 1961 to 1972 to land men on the Moon.
A satellite and a space shuttle are also featured on this souvenir sheet while the two stamps are respectively depicting some planets of the solar system (and a parabolic satellite communications antenna) and different modules having been apparently used on the planet Mars.

A new tribute to a stamp designer in Czech Rep.

The Czech Post is continuing this year its exciting series devoted to the tradition of the production of postage stamps in Czech Republic and Czechoslovakia.
Its first stamp issued in 2012 (on January 20) pays tribute to Josef Liesler (1912-2005) to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth.
This stamp (10 Kč) appears at the top right on the nice new registered letter of the Czech Post below, posted in Prague the first day of issue :-)

Three other stamps are used including the 6 Kč one, also issued on January 20, 2012, completing the current definitive series devoted to folk architecture. This stamp shows a typical half-timbered house located in the village of Vidim (Central Bohemia). To note that the year "2011" appears curiously on this stamp ?
The horizontal stamp on a blue background (21 Kč) was issued on June 16, 2010 to commemorate the 600 years of the Prague's old town astronomical clock, one of the tourist attractions of the Czech capital. You can see on this stamp the four wooden statues that "come alive" every hour : Vanity and Greed to the left, Death and the Turk to the right.
I've already mentioned on this blog the last stamp above (21 Kč), issued on June 1, 2011, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Jan Kašpar's first powered flight.

But let's speak again about Josef Liesler through this new stamp designed by Oldřich Kulhánek and engraved by Miloš Ondráček. It's that stamp that appears in two copies on the official FDC above with a cancellation of January 20, 2012 including the signing of the Czech artist.
Josef Liesler was a painter, illustrator and designer of stamps. He has designed more than one hundred stamps for Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic (the EUROPA 2002 stamp devoted to circus seems to be his last stamp).
Liesler has received many international awards including the world's most beautiful stamp by UNESCO in 1975 for his series "International Hydrological Decade" issued in 1974.
His style, too modern and unconventional, close to surrealism has disconcerted many philatelists.
His works, kept in the greatest museums of the world, often symbolize the struggle against occupation as well as fighting for humanism and freedom...

Bretislav (a big thank you !) has also sent me the numbered commemorative sheet above issued on the first day of issue of that same stamp.
The use of the special cancellation of the general post office in Prague, devoted to the Czech tradition of the production of stamps, is very appropriate in this case !

Astronomie - Emission commune Chine/Danemark

Astronomy - China/Denmark joint issue

Merci beaucoup Wang Jia Yi :-)
The China Post had originally planned in 2011 a joint issue with the Deutsche Post (Germany). This issue was canceled and, in October, China announced a joint issue of replacement with Denmark, dedicated to ancient astronomical instruments.
The 2011 stamp program of the Danish Post being fixed, the Danish series of stamps has consequently been issued in 2012 (on January 4), while the Chinese series was issued on December 10, 2011...
I was lucky to receive the beautiful official FDC below with the set of two stamps (in two copies) issued by the China Post in Shanghai.
Thank you very much Wang Jia Yi :-)

These two splendid stamps (mixed offset/intaglio printing) pay tribute to Chinese astronomer Guo Shoujing (1231-1316) and Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) through their respective astronomical instruments, a large equatorial astrolabe called "Abridged Armilla" (without the ecliptic components invented by Arab scholars) dating from 1276 and an "Equatorial Armillary Sphere" dating from 1585.
To note the illustration to the left of this envelope evoking the astronomical observatory of Stjerneborg (Uraniborg site) founded by Tycho Brahe on the island of Ven near Copenhagen.
The shadow tower (Guanxing Tai Observatory, the oldest of China), which allowed Guo Shoujing to calculate the duration of the rotation of the earth around the sun, is also depicted on this cover.
Finally, to note the two interesting postmarks evoking respectively these two observatories as well as an overview of the "Abridged Armilla" of Guo Shoujing.

Thank you very much Peter for this letter above, mailed on January 10, 2012 from Copenhagen, franked with the Danish version of this stamp set :-)
These two self-adhesive stamps, engraved by Martin Mörck, are featuring the same armillary spheres that played, at their respective times, a major role in the development of astronomy, particularly in measuring the positions of celestial bodies...

Série EUROPA 2009 en Azerbaïdjan

EUROPA 2009 series from Azerbaijan

Merci beaucoup Mahir :-)
As a reminder, 2009 was declared International Year of Astronomy by the United Nations to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first use of the telescope by Galileo and also the 40th anniversary of the first steps of man on Moon.
This theme of astronomy has consistently been chosen by PostEurop for the EUROPA stamp series issued in 2009.
Here is below another example through this new interesting registered letter mailed on November 10, 2011 from Baku, capital of Azerbaijan.
Thank you very much Mahir :-)

The Post of Azerbaijan has thus issued, on April 13, 2009, a EUROPA series of two stamps (print run : 50,000 each) and one souvenir sheet (print run : 15,000) above.
This souvenir sheet celebrates the works of Galileo discovered in part through his telescope shown on the stamp (1 manat). His portrait in the bottom margin is based on the drawing by Ottavio Leoni, executed in 1624 and kept today at the Biblioteca Marucelliana in Florence. Galileo's drawings depicting different phases of the moon, taken from his book "Sidereus Nuncius" (1610), are also reproduced to the left on this sheet.
The two stamps to the left are dedicated to the Persian astronomer, theologian and philosopher Nasreddin Tusi (1201-1274), famous in particular for its tables to calculate the positions of the planets, and to the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory (named after Nasreddin Tusi), opened in 1960 in Azerbaijan.

Mahir has also used two other stamps (on the other side of his letter above) being part of the second part, issued on June 20, 2011, of the current definitive series devoted to flowers of the Karabakh region, Ophrys caucasica (10 qəpik) and Galanthus caucasicus (30 qəpik) here.
