80 ans du Zoo de Paris

80 years of Paris Zoological Park

After 3 years of work and 6 years of closure, the Zoological Park of Paris has reopened its doors to the public, 80 years after its creation in the Bois de Vincennes (southeast of the capital).
Part of the French National Museum of Natural History, this Zoo offers a world tour of biodiversity with 180 different species and over 1,000 animals.
The public can now discover five biozone areas (Patagonia, Savanna-Sahel, Europe, Guyana, Madagascar) offering to the animals concerned some optimal living conditions.
To commemorate both its reopening and its 80th anniversary (1934-2014), the French Post has issued (general sale on June 23, 2014) a special stamp dedicated to this Paris Zoo.

It is that stamp (€ 0.98, print run : 1200000), designed by Eric Viennot, that appears on the two First Day Covers above and below (thank you very much Roland !).
The FDC cancellation of June 15, 2014 (the preview sale of the stamp took place during the Stamp exhibition "Planète Timbres" organized not far from the zoo), also designed by Eric Viennot, reproduces the logo of the zoo.
The "big rock", a symbol of the park, is featured on this logo as well as on the stamp on white background.
The contours of the large aviary are also included on this large sized stamp.
The four animal species depicted on that stamp illustrate the commitment of the park for the conservation of biodiversity : a lemur (crowned sifaka), a jaguar, a flamingo and a giraffe.

The illustration to the left on the envelope above allow to see this "big rock" as well as some giraffes in their "natural" environment !

Timbre EUROPA 2014 en Andorre (poste française)

On May 23, 2014, the French Post in Andorra issued its EUROPA stamp whose theme this year is devoted to national musical instruments.
The designer of that stamp, Helena Guàrdia Ribo, chose to feature a buna, a type of bagpipe instrument having the particularity of being composed of three drones facing down.
It is that stamp (€ 0.83, print run : 50000), with its dated corner of April 7, 2014, that was used on this special cover below sent from the last Stamp exhibition "Planète Timbres" held in Paris from 14 to 22 June 2014.
To note the temporary postmark of the French Post in Andorra at this stamp show, including a pen and the mention Phil@poste.

To note also the signature of Stéphanie Ghinéa, who laid out that stamp, on this envelope to the right.
This bagpipe, unique in this region of the Pyrenees, would have arrived in Andorra after an appearance in Catalonia at the Romanesque period.
Helena Guàrdia Ribo has chosen to feature this instrument at that time drawing her inspiration (for background) from pictorial art and ornamental motifs of Andorran Romanesque paintings.
The buna is at the heart of one of the most famous legends of Andorra, El buner d'Ordino, telling the story of this musician attacked by wolves, who took refuge on top of a pine. He managed to stampede the wolves by playing his instrument all the night...
A stamp devoted to this legend was issued in the Principality in 2002.

Hommage à Benjamin Rabier en France

Tribute to Benjamin Rabier in France

Born 150 years ago in the town of La Roche-sur-Yon (Vendée), Benjamin Rabier (1864-1939) marked the beginning of the 20th century in France through his illustrations and cartoons, often featuring animals, which remained in our collective memory...
The souvenir sheet (print run : 700,000) put on general sale on June 23, 2014 by the French Post, perfectly evokes these representative illustrations of Benjamin Rabier.
It is that sheet (layout by Patte & Besset) consisting of two stamps designed by Sophie Beaujard and engraved by Pierre Bara, that appears on the first day cover from Paris dated June 14, 2014 below.
The preview sale of this sheet was also held at the Benjamin Rabier's multimedia and art library of La Roche-sur-Yon and at the Castle of Valençay (Rabier died in Faverolles not far from Valençay) with the same FDC postmark designed by S. Coffinet.

The two stamps are featuring a portrait of Rabier as well as his famous cartoon character created in 1923, Gideon the duck (out of its egg here).
Until 1939, Rabier published 16 albums devoted to the adventures of Gideon and its animal friends.
Benjamin Rabier published in 1906 a remarkable edition, fully illustrated by the Fables of La Fontaine, and later the Roman de Renart and the Natural History of Buffon.
In 1921, Léon Bel was inspired by a drawing by Benjamin Rabier to become the famous logo of his brand "The Laughing Cow".
All the work of Rabier (illustrations, cartoons...) translated perfectly the human expressions and little quirks in an animal world.

Émission commune Palestine-Turquie

Palestine-Turkey joint stamp issue

Very happy to share with you today this historic letter for me as it was sent from Palestine and as it concerns a joint stamp issue (with Turkey) !
A big thank you Hazem for this cover sent on May 27, 2014 from the city of Al-Bireh located in the West Bank near Ramallah :-)
A Philatelic Bureau (the only one in the West Bank ?) is located in this Al-Bireh post office.
Hazem used the souvenir sheet, issued on December 12, 2013, constituting a joint issue with Turkey, entitled "Shared History", featuring two iconic mosques of the two countries.
To note that some FDCs of December 12, 2013 have been issued regarding this Palestinian m/s while the mint version is available only since April 8, 2014...

To note also that since 2013, Palestinian stamps (printed in Dubai) include the words "State of Palestine" instead of "The Palestinian Authority", following the recognition on November 29, 2012, by the General Assembly of the United Nations, of Palestine as a UN non-member state...
This status has not been recognized by Israel which may, postally speaking, be problematic since the mail to or from Palestine passes systematically through the Jewish state.
The Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) in Istanbul, named after the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior, built between 1609 and 1616 and famous for its six minarets, is depicted on one of the two stamps (1000 Mils) being part of this m/s.
The other stamp shows a part of the al-Aqsa Mosque, built in the 7th century in Jerusalem, which is part of a group of religious buildings (with the Dome of the Rock, for example) built on the Temple Mount. That stamp shows the dome as well as the first minaret, known as al-Fakhariyya, built in 1278 in the southwest corner of the mosque.
This mosque, as well as the rest of the Old City of Jerusalem listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is under Israeli control since 1967.
Finally, to note, contrary to the Turkish m/s, the presence of the two flags of Turkey and Palestine in the right margin on this souvenir sheet.

As it was the case in the previous edition of the Salon du Timbre 2012, three "LISA" ATM stamps have been issued exclusively during the nine days of the last Stamp exhibition "Planète Timbres" held from 14 to 22 June 2014 in Paris.
Each LISA was issued in two versions of non-thermic and thermic paper (LISA 1 and LISA 2) each available through two different machines, i.e. 6 machines installed in total.
60000 or 70000 copies of each LISA were released (30000 or 40000 for each thermic or non thermic paper).
These three LISA ("Ecopli" postal rate, currently €0.59), LISA 2 thermic paper version, are included on the nice special cover below, together with their respective postmarks dated June, 16 2014.

The LISA at the top right, designed by Arnaud d'Aunay, mentions the first World War with these French soldiers in the terrible trenches in the northeast of France and the flags of the Allied forces (France, Russia, Great Britain).
The LISA on the bottom left, designed by Geneviève Marot, is devoted to Vincennes Castle and the Zoo of Paris celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.
The last LISA, designed by Claude Perchat, shows the Institut de France and the Pont des Arts in Paris.
This LISA also mentions the 87th Congress of the FFAP which was organized during this stamp exhibition "Planète Timbres" (a stamp was also issued about this topic, I'll speak about very soon on this blog).

Séries EUROPA 2014 au Portugal

EUROPA 2014 stamp sets from Portugal

Merci beaucoup Luis :-)
Such as many European postal administrations, the Post of Portugal (CTT) has decided to issue its EUROPA series (theme : "national musical instruments") on May 9, 2014, the Europe Day.
As it was the case in previous years, three stamps as well as three miniature sheets (2 stamps each) were issued, two of them including the mentions "Azores" and "Madeira" (as a reminder, these stamps can however be used on letters sent from mainland Portugal).
I was very lucky to receive this complete set on the three registered cover below sent on June 11, 2014 from the city of Braga. Thank you very much Luis :-)

The cover above is franked with the stamp (E20g, print run : 185,000) and the souvenir sheet (print run : 60,000) devoted to mainland Portugal and to a traditional bagpipe from the north-east of the country, the Gaita Mirandesa or Gaita de Fole, from the region of Miranda.
The Gaita, often accompanied by caixa drum (as shown in the margin of the sheet to the left), was played in the villages, on the eve of celebrations or weddings.
This medieval bagpipe is now the subject of study and collection of information from the oldest in order to rebuild this ancient instrument in an authentic way...

The cover above is franked with the stamp (E20g, print run : 185,000) and the souvenir sheet (print run : 60,000) devoted to the Azores and to a traditional string instrument present in the nine islands of the archipelago, the Viola da Terra.
This kind of guitar (12 strings) would have appeared in the Azores when the first settlers arrived from mainland Portugal.
Characterized by a pure sound and melodies sometimes resembling a cry sound, this instrument is also called "Twin-Heart Viola" because these 2 hearts would evoke the nostalgia felt by those who have left the Azores and those who stayed, in a region marked by emigration...

The third cover above is franked with the stamp (E20g, print run : 205,000) and the souvenir sheet (print run : 60,000) devoted to Madeira and to a traditional percussion instrument of the island, called Brinquinho or Bailhindo.
This instrument is mostly played to accompany the folklore dance of Madeira, Bailinho da Madeira.
Visually appealing, it is composed of wooden dolls (usually seven) dressed in traditional clothing and bearing castanets, bottle caps and ribbons.
This handcrafted instrument, which would have continental origins (regions of Minho and Douro), is used by folk groups to keep the rhythm.
Brinquinho sounds are emitted when the musician performs vertical movements.

Hommage aux Martyrs de Tulle en France

Tribute to the Martyrs of Tulle in France

On June 9, 1944, the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" decided to intervene in Corrèze, an important place of the Resistance in France against the German occupation, to quell and discourage members of Resistance, only three days after the Allied landings in Normandy.
This reaction of Germans took place two days after the assault on the city of Tulle by the Resistance. The Nazi commandment decided to make an example in Tulle and to discourage other actions of its kind in France...
Hundreds of men of the city were captured and an arbitrary selection was made : 99 of them were hanged, 149 were deported (101 died in the Dachau concentration camp)...

To note that 18 French railways employees were also assassinated when SS troops took control of the train station of Tulle.
All these victims of Nazi barbarism are now described as "Martyrs of Tulle" and a tribute is paid to them each year (on June 9th) at the monument of the Haut-Lieu de Cueille, place of remembrance, in Tulle.
It is a part of this monument (a bas-relief showing a woman crying) that is included on the FDC cancellation from Paris above, regarding the special stamp (€ 0.66) issued by the French Post to commemorate the 70th anniversary of this massacre of Tulle. Thank you very much Joël :-)
The preview sale of that stamp (print run : 1.2 million), designed by Didier Jean & Zad, took also place on June 9, 2014 in Tulle.
That stamp, rather ugly, evokes three symbolic rows of men (99 hanged, 149 deportees, 101 exterminated) with, in the background, the arms factory in which the men of the city were "parked" and then "sorted"...

Timbre EUROPA 2014 en Espagne

EUROPA 2014 stamp from Spain

Merci beaucoup Josep :-)
The Spanish Post has chosen to pay tribute to one of the greatest flamenco guitarists in the world to illustrate its EUROPA stamp issued on April 23, 2014.
As a reminder, the EUROPA theme this year is "the national music instruments" and that stamp references to the Spanish guitar through a portrait of Paco de Lucía (1947-2014), who died on February 25, 2014 in Mexico.
It is that self-adhesive stamp (permanent rate "B" - Letter up to 20g sent to Europe, i.e. € 0.75 now) that was used on the letter below mailed on June 16, 2014 from Barcelona. Thank you very much Josep :-)

Throughout his career, Paco de Lucía has made significant innovations in the Spanish guitar, was a master of improvisation on stage and was able to fuse flamenco with other musical styles such as jazz, bossa nova, tango or classical music.
He received in 2004 the prestigious Príncipe de Asturias prize for Arts because he was considered as the most universal of the flamenco artists, his style has inspired younger generations and his art became one of the best ambassadors of Spanish culture worldwide.
The career of Paco de Lucía is inseparable from the one of the great figure of flamenco singing Camarón de la Isla (1950-1992).

Abbaye de Pontigny en France

Pontigny Abbey in France

With La Ferté, Clairvaux and Morimond, the Pontigny Abbey is considered as one of the four great daughter houses of Cîteaux Abbey from which emerged branches of the Cistercian Order in the early 12th century.
Cîteaux Abbey was then the head of several hundred monasteries having marked for more than 700 years the spiritual, economic and social life of the Christian world.
900 years ago (on May 1114) began the construction of the Pontigny Abbey (and other monastic buildings) in the department of Yonne in northern Burgundy.
To celebrate this anniversary, a special stamp (€ 0.61, print run : 1,500,000), created and engraved by Pierre Albuisson, was put on general sale on June 10, 2014.

It is that stamp that appears on the first day cover above, with postmark from Pontigny (89) of June 7, 2014. Thank you very much Joël :-)
The preview sale of that stamp took also place on June 7, 2014 in Paris (Carré d'Encre), where the same FDC cancellation (depicting the apse of the abbey), designed by Sophie Beaujard, was offered to the public.
The stamp shows a view of the Romanesque style north transept as well as a detail of a stained glass, symbolizing both the sobriety of this Cistercian order. A decree indeed stipulated that these stained glasses had to be white, without a cross or any representation...
Despite some works done in the 17th century, the style of this abbey is still today an example of sobriety and purity and its length (119 meters) makes it the largest Cistercian abbey in France...
To be precise, this stamp actually features the Cathedral Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Edme, the old abbey church of the monastery of Pontigny.

Patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO en Andorre

UNESCO World Heritage in Andorra

On June 16, 2014, the French Post in Andorra issued a new stamp dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the inscription of the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A rather unusual way, that stamp (€ 0.98, print run : 50,000) was issued in a sheetlet of 10 stamps with a top margin mentioning this anniversary.
It is that top sheet (with 2 stamps) that was used on the first day cover below with the postmark normally issued in the Principality.
This cover has however been sent without any problem from the last "Planète Timbres" stamp exhibition in Paris, without passing through the Principality of Andorra...
This postmark shows a topographic representation of these two valleys (Madriu and Perafita-Claror) and the Spanish border in the south-east of the country.

Stéphanie Ghinéa, who has laid out that stamp (from a photograph by Alex Téna), was present at this Paris exhibition on June 16, 2014 and was kind enough to sign this letter above to the left !
This Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, located in the parish of Escaldes, is the only place in Andorra to be a UNESCO World Heritage site (since 2004).
According to UNESCO, "the cultural landscape of Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley offers a microcosmic perspective of the way people have harvested the resources of the high Pyrenees over millennia".
This valley occupies about 10% of the country (70% of all species of birds in Andorra have been recorded here). It consists of beautiful mountain scenery, glaciers, lakes and wooded valleys. Marked by pastoralism (in example the shepherd's stone house on that stamp), this valley is characterized by a communal land-ownership system dating back to the 13th century.

A second FDC cancellation, with the mention "Salon Planète Timbres", was offered to the public in Paris regarding that same stamp.
It is that postmark that was applied on the other cover above. Thank you very much Stéphane :-)
To note that the French Post in Andorra had already issued stamps devoted to that same valley in 2004 (to announce the application of this site to UNESCO) and 2005 (to announce its inscription).
The Spanish Post in Andorra had also issued stamps devoted to this valley in 2005 (for its inscription on the World Heritage) and 2012 in the context of the EUROPA issues ("Visit ...").

Tribute to victims of World War I in Czech Rep.

Such as many postal administrations (France, Serbia, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand...), the Czech Post has issued on June 11, 2014, a beautiful and very moving souvenir sheet dedicated to WW1 and in particular to the the military and civilian victims of that conflict that marked the beginning of the 20th century.
I've received the two official FDCs below each including one of the two stamps (29 CZK each) of that souvenir sheet designed by Jan Maget. Thank you very much Bret :-)
To note the FDC postmark from Prague with this barbed wire cross and this dead dove in the center...

The engravings on these two FDCs, designed by Vaclav Fajt, respectively feature different helmets and hats of the troops present in this conflict and portraits of war heroes in front of a two-headed eagle (symbol of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which Czechoslovakia was then attached ?) and with a lion lying in the foreground.

Bret also sent me this souvenir sheet below with these 2 stamps as well as 3 labels.
The flags of the countries engaged in the WWI in the top margin are the only colored part of this sheet : the Entente Powers (Russia, France, Britain, Japan) and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Italy).
Some mentions are included on the outer frame of this souvenir sheet : the names of famous battles (Sedan, Verdun and Marne in France, Halič in Slovakia, Tannenburg in Poland), the name of the main belligerent countries, the number of soldiers mobilized (42 million for the allies and 23 million for the Central Powers), the leaders of the countries concerned (Wilhelm II, Tsar Nicolas II, Franz Joseph I, Sultan Mehmed V...) as well as the number of military casualties (5 million for the Allied Powers and 8 million for the Central Powers).

This last mention (8 million soldiers killed for the Central Powers) seems wrong since the estimate number is more than 4 million military casualties (and more than 5 million civilian casualties)...
The two labels at the top left and right evoke some swearings by Czech soldiers during this World War.
The label on the left is interesting as it features the engagement of the Czechoslovak Legion volunteers in France, in Bayonne. This company was then nicknamed "Nazdar Company".

Bret was finally kind enough to send me the two First Day documents above and below regarding these two stamps.

Médaillés olympiques du Belarus à Sotchi

Olympic medalists from Belarus in Sochi

On February 7, 2014, the opening day of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, the Post of Belarus issued a nice souvenir sheet dedicated to these games, evoking the Olympic flame.
Despite its smaller delegation (only 26 athletes) since its first participation in the Olympic Winter Games in 1994, the team of Belarus engaged to the Sochi Olympics got the best result in its history (Summer and Winter Games combined) with six medals, including five in gold !
Engaged in five sports (biathlon, alpine skiing, cross country skiing, freestyle skiing and short-track), the delegation of Belarus has finished at an excellent 8th place at the nation's ranking, with 4 medals won in biathlon and 2 in freestyle skiing (Men's and Women's aerials).
To note that, since 1998, Belarus has always won at least one Olympic medal in freestyle skiing (aerials) !

On May 2, 2014, a series of three stamps and one souvenir sheet was issued to honor the Olympic medalists in Sochi. It is that set (design : Yelena Medved) that was used on the registered cover above sent from Minsk on June 3, 2014. Thank you very much Alexander :-)
To note the mention "Département de prestation de services" in French on the postmarks with a misspelling ("Department" instead of "Département")...
The souvenir sheet (rate "P" for an airmail letter up to 20g sent abroad, print run : 15,000) is dedicated to one of the stars of these Sochi Olympics, Darya Domracheva, and her three gold medals won in biathlon (pursuit, individual and mass start).
This sheet indicates that Darya Domracheva was awarded the title of "Hero of Belarus", the highest title that can be bestowed on a citizen of the country (since its creation in 1995, this title was awarded to only ten people).
The three other stamps (rate "M" for an airmail postcard sent abroad, print run : 80,000 each) respectively evoke the gold medals won by Anton Kushnir (freestyle skiing) and Alla Tsuper (freestyle skiing) and the bronze medal won by Nadezhda Skardino (biathlon).
The medals depicted on these stamps were printed using the technology of relief stamping and selective varnishing.

Anniversaires et célébrations 2014 à Maurice

Anniversaries and events 2014 in Mauritius

Mauritius Post has issued, on May 28, 2014, its second series (of only 3 !) of stamps planned for this year, entitled "Anniversaries & Events", consisting of 4 stamps.
A big thank you David for this registered cover below sent the first day of issue from Port Louis, franked with this complete set :-)
The Rs 14 stamp evokes the 10th anniversary of the creation of the Ombudsperson for children's office, whose job is to ensure that the rights, needs and interests of children (as defined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child) are duly taken into consideration by all public and private bodies on the island.

The stamp above to the right (Rs 25) is devoted to the 25th anniversary of the introduction of mobile telephony in Mauritius.
The other two stamps (Rs 8 and Rs 15) are devoted to two anniversaries regarding religious figures : the 150 years of the death of Jacques-Désiré Laval (1803-1864) and the 200 years of the arrival of Reverend Jean Joseph Lebrun (1789-1865) in Mauritius.
Arrived in Mauritius in May 1814 (the island then belonged to the English recently), the Protestant missionary Jean Joseph Lebrun founded a year later in Port Louis the first free public school.
He is now regarded as the founder and pioneer of free public education for all in Mauritius at a time when education was reserved for children of high and middle class and when the abolition of slavery was not still effective...
Father Laval was a French priest and missionary arrived in Mauritius in 1841. He devoted all his life to defend, educate and care for the most vulnerable populations (black poor people for most of them).
Known honorifically as the "Apostle of Blacks", he was beatified in 1979 by Pope John Paul II.

Timbres émis en France les 6 prochains mois

During my visit to the Philatelic exhibition "Planète Stamps" in Paris on June 16, 2014, some cards like the one below were offered to the public free of charge.
These cards, referring to the philatelic program of the French Post for the 2nd half of 2014 are pre-stamped and valid for a shipment up to 20g anywhere in the world.
Some stamp designs are not included and in particular the stamps/booklets/souvenir sheets issued during the next "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" early November...

Among my favorite stamps: the Marquise de Pompadour, the souvenir sheet devoted to the First Battle of the Marne in September 1914 as well as the stamps dedicated to Keith Haring (a "birth" stamp designed by this artist had already been issued in 2003) and to French cartoonist and illustrator Maximilien Wox.
To note the confirmation of an interesting joint issue between France and various countries of the Indian Ocean on October 13, 2014, devoted to the green turtle...

The other side of this prepaid card above with one of the special postmarks (this one refers to the first World War) from Paris, dated June 16, 2014, issued during this Stamp Exhibition "Planète Timbres" about which I will speak again very soon on this blog :-)

Émission commune Japon-Suisse

Japan-Switzerland joint stamp issue

In a message posted on this blog on February 23, 2014, I spoke about a letter received from Switzerland, franked with the two joint stamps issued between this country and Japan to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of their bilateral relations.
This time I was lucky to receive this letter from Japan, sent on June 12, 2014 from the city of Sendai, franked with the Japanese version of this joint set. Thank you very much Keiko :-)
As a reminder, these two stamps are featuring a typical landscape of the Swiss Alps in spring (left) and Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms (right).

The Swiss Post has issued these two stamps in the same sheet of 8 stamps (4 of each) while Japan Post released the leaflet below also including eight other stamps devoted to other landmarks of Switzerland (old city of Bern, Bernina Massif, Swiss Alps Jungfrau -Aletsch...), listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites for most of them.

To note that Japan Post has made a habit of issuing this type of sheet regarding joint stamps with other postal administrations.
I like the logo of this 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Switzerland, included in the middle right margin, with the flags of the two countries, connected by an arch, forming a happy face.
A jury composed of representatives of both countries chose this logo designed by Swiss graphic designer Francesca Porro focusing on the key points of this anniversary : the close ties between the two countries and joy !

After a booklet dedicated to the popular cartoon "Čtyřlístek" by Jaroslav Němeček in 2012 and another one devoted to the Little Mole "Krteček" by Zdeněk Miler in 2013, the Czech Post has issued, on May 28, 2014, a new booklet (10 stamps) featuring this time the two puppets Jů and Hele by the Czech artist, illustrator and cartoonist Stanislav Holý (1943-1998).
A big thank you Bret for this official FDC below regarding that stamp (permanent domestic rate 'A', letter up to 50g) with a postmark from Prague :-)

That stamp represents the two characters Jů and Hele, sitting, with another puppet, Muf, flying in the background.
To note that it is Stanislav Holý's son, Matěj Holý, who has made the graphic arrangement of that stamp.
Stanislav Holý focused on comics from 1960 in particular with his character Mr. Pip. In 1971, he graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague.
But Stanislav Holý is best known for his children books as well as his "Friendship Studio" (inspired by Sesame Street) for the Czech Television, dedicated to children, in which he featured his main two characters, Jů and Hele but also Hary Šoumen (Harry Showman), Muf Supermuf, Tryskomyš (Jetmouse), Šamšula and many others...

Bret was kind enough to send me the First Day sheet above regarding that stamp as well as the booklet of 10 stamps below :-)

The cover of this booklet above includes the illustration of the stamp (right) and the engraving on the First Day Cover (left).

350 ans des services postaux au Brésil

350 years of postal services in Brazil

On November 19, 2013, the Brazilian Post (Correios) has released a souvenir sheet (three R$ 3.00 stamps) commemorating the 350th anniversary of the establishment of postal services in the country.
Entitled "350 years of the Post - History, People and Action", this souvenir sheet (design : Paulo Baptista, print run : 210,000) was used on the first day cover below (with postmark from Rio de Janeiro) mailed on April 24, 2014 from Sao Paulo. Thank you very much Marcelo :-)
To note the presence of two logos in the margin at the bottom left on this sheet, about this 350th anniversary and the Brazilian Post emblem (which was modified in 2014).

The 3 stamps of this sheet evoke important dates in the history of postal services in Brazil.
The year 1663 is considered as the year when the regular postal services were established in Brazil. The associated stamp to the left features a stylized caravel, an extract from the letter of the king of Portugal regarding the appointment of Lieutenant João Cavaleiro Cardoso as head of the postal service in the captaincy of Rio de Janeiro. A map of the 15 hereditary captaincies, a form of territorial administration of the Portuguese colonial empire, is also included in the top margin.
The stamp in the middle evokes the year 1852 when the electric telegraph was inaugurated in Brazil. The lower margin shows a Breguet electric telegraph (commissioned for the first time in 1844 in France).
The year 2013 included on the last stamp shows the current role of the postal administration in the national integration, with pictures related to the mail delivery and sorting.

70 ans du débarquement en Normandie

Normandy landings 70th anniversary

The French Post has issued on June 10, 2014, its 8th stamp (since 1954) devoted to the landing of Allied troops in Normandy, one of the major acts of the 2nd World War, which took place on June 6, 1944.
It is this time the painter and press illustrator Nicolas Vial (b. 1955) who designed that stamp (€ 0.66, print run : 1,200,000) illustrating this key moment of landing on one of the five Normandy beaches.
Nicolas Vial designed here his 10th stamp for the French Post since 2003 (Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union).
The preview sale of that stamp was held on 5, 6 or 7 June 2014 in 13 cities of Normandy as well as in Paris.
A postmark with First Day mention, designed by Aurélie Baras, was offered to the public only in Paris and three cities of Calvados (Ouistreham, Caen, Bayeux) and one city of La Manche (Sainte-Mère-Eglise).

I was lucky to receive the two First Day Covers above and below with cancellations from Paris. Thank you very much Roland and Joël :-)
The illustration to the left on the envelope above shows the code names of the 5 beaches of Normandy (Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword) where nearly 160,000 American, British, Canadian (mostly) soldiers landed during the assault Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944.
Soldiers of the French Army of Liberation, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Norway or Australia were also part of this operation, preceding the Battle of Normandy, which allowed to fight Nazism and to free France and Europe.

More than 5,000 ships and 1,200 aircrafts engaged to parachute troops also participated in this landing which allowed the Allies to open a front in the West, paying the price of a heavy human toll, on the Omaha beach in particular (2500 U.S. soldiers killed on D-Day).
This operation ended on August 30, 1944 (liberation of the city of Rouen) when German troops cross the Seine river with a terrible record of 600,000 deaths (soldiers and civilians) and many almost ruined cities...

Thank you very much Stéphane for this 3rd first day cover above, with a postmark (without First Day mention) from the town of Argentan (Orne) !
That same postmark was also available in 6 cities of Calvados and 2 others of La Manche.
No peace dove on this cancellation but some jubilant French with American soldiers.
The city of Argentan was destroyed nearly 80% between June and August 1944 after many Allied bombing and terrible fighting between U.S. troops and those of the third Reich...
