78th Anniversary of Independence" stamp set on FDC from Myanmar

Merci beaucoup Thein !
As has been the case almost every year since 2000 (and also in 1992 and 1998), the postal administration of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (formerly Burma) issued a series of two stamps on January 4, 2026, commemorating the country's 78th anniversary of independence.
The country indeed gained independence from the United Kingdom on January 4, 1948, with the official English name "Burma", officially known as the "Union of Burma".
In 1989, the official English name was changed to "Union of Myanmar" by the dictatorial regime of the generals, but this controversial change was not recognized by the political opposition, several English-speaking countries, or a neighbor like Thailand.
On October 21, 2010, the military junta changed the country's name in English to "Republic of the Union of Myanmar," as well as its flag and national anthem.
These two stamps (200 MMK, print run: 100,000 each, unknown designer), printed in sheets of 50, appear on the splendid official First Day Cover (print run: 1,000) below, along with the cancellations from Yangon, the country's economic capital and largest city (capital until 2006 when it was replaced by Naypyidaw by the ruling military junta). Thank you very much, Thein!

The stamp on the left (and the illustration on the envelope) depicts the Marawijaya Buddha statue, the world's tallest marble statue of a seated Buddha (25 meters high), erected between 2020 and 2023 in Dakshinathiri, in the current capital, Naypyidaw.
This project has been criticized, labeled a "prestige project" for Min Aung Hlaing, who has been in power since the 2021 coup, and perceived as a way for him to increase his public legitimacy by presenting himself as a protector and promoter of Buddhism and to improve his image.
The other stamp illustrates a view of Kandawgyi Lake ("Great Royal Lake") at night in Yangon, with the illuminated Karaweik Pavilion (a concrete replica of a royal barge, built between 1972 and 1974) in the background. It is an artificial lake fed from Lake Inya by underground pipes, created during the British administration to supply the city with water.

Thein also used these two stamps on the other side of this envelope above, along with 11 other identical stamps (1,000 MMK) depicting a Burmese xylophone, issued on July 27, 2017.
Between 1998 and 2000, the postal administration of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (formerly Burma) issued a series of six definitive stamps featuring traditional musical instruments of the country.
These stamps were subsequently reissued regularly, with different nominal values, overprints, or slightly different designs, as is the case with this xylophone stamp.

"Endemic Birds" souvenir sheet on cover from Myanmar

Merci beaucoup Thein !

On August 20, 2025, these nine stamps (200 MMK each, design: Ahmonoo) have been reissued as a souvenir sheet (perforated and imperforated versions, print run: 10,000), used on the spectacular cover below, sent by registered mail on November 24, 2025, from Yangon, the economic capital and largest city of the country (the capital until 2006 when it was replaced by Naypyidaw by the ruling military junta). Thank you very much, Thein!

"Traditional Musical Instruments" souvenir sheet on cover from Myanmar

Between 1998 and 2000, the postal administration of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (formerly Burma) issued a series of six definitive stamps featuring traditional musical instruments of the country.
These stamps were subsequently reissued regularly, with different nominal values, overprints, or slightly different designs.
On November 20, 2025, these six stamps (200 MMK each) have been reissued as a souvenir sheet (unknown print run), used on the cover below, sent by registered mail on November 24, 2025, from Yangon, the economic capital and largest city of the country (the capital until 2006 when it was replaced by Naypyidaw by the ruling military junta). Thank you very much, Thein!
To note that these stamps bear two inscriptions that may seem redundant: "Republic of the Union of Myanmar" at the top and "Myanmar" at the bottom...

The stamp in the upper left depicts a brass gong from Kachin State, the northernmost subdivision of the country, bordering China to the north and east, Shan State to the south, and India to the west.
A traditional Burmese harp, also called saung or saung-gauk, appears on the next (green) stamp. The third stamp depicts a xylophone called "pattala", composed of 24 bamboo strips called ywet or asan suspended above a boat-shaped soundbox. It is played with two padded mallets.
The fourth (purple) stamp shows a brass gong from Mon State, located in the south of the country, between Karen State to the east and the Andaman Sea to the west. Mon State has 566 km of coastline and numerous small islands.
The next stamp features an auspicious drum from Rakhine State, a coastal state on the Bay of Bengal, bordering Bangladesh and separated from the rest of Myanmar by the Arakan Mountains.
The last (orange) stamp features another type of (pot) drum, traditional to Shan State, which borders China to the north and northeast, Laos to the east, and Thailand to the southeast. This state is the largest subdivision of the country, covering nearly a quarter of Myanmar's total area.

Another example of the reissue of stamps from this definitive series is the "Xylophone" stamp reissued on July 27, 2017 with a nominal value of 1,000 MMK, used in 11 copies on the other side of the envelope above.

"150 years of the UPU 1874-2024" stamps on FDC from Myanmar

In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) celebrates its 150th anniversary. On October 9, 1874, 22 countries gathered to sign the Treaty of Bern, creating the General Postal Union, which would later become known as the Universal Postal Union (from 1878).
150 years later, the UPU now unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, having realized its founders' vision of establishing a single postal territory to serve people everywhere.
The UPU's theme for its 150th year, "150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations", recognizes this accomplishment, and reinforces its commitment to serve peoples for the decades and centuries to come.
Throughout 2024, the UPU will roll out a series of events and campaigns in celebration of its rich past, dedicated present and promising future, in particular using the hashtag #UPU150 on social media.

The UPU, a specialized agency of the United Nations (since 1947) headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, is the second oldest international organization after the International Telecommunications Union, and constitutes the main forum for cooperation between global postal sector players.
On October 9, 2024, World Post Day, the postal administration of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar put into circulation a stamp dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the UPU.
This stamp (200 MMK, print run: 200,000), printed in a sheet of 50 stamps, was used in 4 copies on the above cover sent by registered mail, with First Day cancellation (UPU emblem) from the general post office in Yangon, the economic capital and largest city of the country. Thank you very much Thein!
This stamp uses the graphic charter submitted by the UPU to member countries on the occasion of this 150th anniversary: official logo at the top with associated slogan (in English here) and flag of the country at the bottom right (and short mention "Myanmar" here).

Thein used six stamps on the other side of his envelope above, in particular a stamp (100 MMK, design: Wai Zin Paing) issued on December 12, 2019, depicting an Indian roller (Coracias benghalensis), a sedentary bird living in the tropical regions of southern Asia from Iraq to Thailand, and in particular in northwestern Myanmar.
The other two stamps (1000 and 2500 MMK), issued on July 27, 2017, are devoted to traditional instruments of Myanmar, respectively a xylophone and a harp.
These stamps are reminding us the design of the definitive stamps issued in 1998 and 1999 on the same theme.

Myanmar (formerly Burma) has been a member of the UPU since October 4, 1949.

"ASEAN Post 2024 - General Post Offices" joint stamps on FDCs from Myanmar

On August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, five countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand) founded the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a political, economic and cultural organization whose principal aims include accelerating economic growth, social progress, and sociocultural evolution among its members, alongside the protection of regional stability, in the context of the Cold War.
ASEAN is today composed of 10 member countries, after the accession of Brunei Darussalam in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos in 1997, Myanmar in 1997 and Cambodia in 1999, an entity of 625 million inhabitants (9% of the world's population) and the 7th largest economy in the world.
In 2007, a first joint issue (10 different stamps) dedicated to emblematic buildings in each country was put into circulation to celebrate the 40th anniversary of ASEAN.

The last joint issue involving the 10 ASEAN member countries was in 2019 and had the theme of traditional costumes.
Since 2017, the "ASEAN Post" logo has been present on these joint stamps.
On August 8, 2024, in reference to the date of the creation of ASEAN (57th anniversary), a new "ASEAN Post" joint issue was put into circulation, illustrating the theme of the general post offices of each of the 10 countries.
On that day, the postal administration of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar issued an attractive stamp dedicated to the central post office of Naypyidaw (or Nay Pyi Taw).

This stamp (200 MMK, print run: 200,000), printed in a sheet of 50 stamps, was used in four copies on the two different FDCs above sent by registered mail, with postmarks from the general post office (GPO) in Yangon, the economic capital and largest city of the country. Thank you very much Thein!
By decision of the ruling junta, the capital of the country was moved from November 2005 to Naypyidaw, in the center of the country (Mandalay region).
The central post office in Naypyidaw (its red facade is shown on this stamp) is therefore recent, inaugurated on June 27, 2007 in the Zabuthiri district.

"Endemic bird species" stamps on FDCs from Myanmar

On October 9, 2022, the Post of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar released the first stamp of a series dedicated to different species of endemic birds in the country.
This stamp (200 MMK, print run: 200,000), designed by Ahmonoo, is present on this lovely illustrated envelope with First Day postmark from the
General Post Office in Yangon. Thank you very much Thein!
This stamp is dedicated to the White-throated Babbler (Argya gularis), a passerine species common to the regions of Mandalay, Sagaing, Magway, Bago, Yangon, Kachin and Ayeyawady.
These gregarious birds feed in small groups. Because they are mostly seen in groups of six or seven, they are figuratively called "seven-sister birds" in Myanmar.
They lift and flap their tails and hop in search of food. Male and female are the same color. Their size is relatively large and their tail very long, pale eyes and a white throat, upper breast contrasting with rufous-buff remainder of underparts.

This bird is not particularly threatened in the country (according to the IUCN) where it has however been completely protected since 2018.
The 2nd stamp of this series (200 MMK, print run: 200,000), issued on November 23, 2022, is present on this 2nd pretty illustrated envelope above with First Day cancellation from the General Post Office in Yangon
This stamp is dedicated to the Hooded Treepie (Crypsirina cucullata), a species of the corvidae family, characterized by its silvery plumage, its long tail and its black head.
This bird, with near threatened status according to the IUCN, lives mainly in the central plains of Myanmar (regions of Mandalay, Sagaing, Magway, Kachin).

To note curiously on this series the simple mention "Myanmar" instead of "Republic of the Union of Myanmar" as usual...
To date, two other stamps have been put into circulation in this same series, at the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2023.

"2nd Forum dedicated to the protection of the tiger" joint stamps on FDC from Myanmar

On the initiative of Russian Federation, the organizing country of the 2nd International Forum devoted to the protection of the Tiger, 9 countries (unless I'm mistaken) among the 14 countries of the world where species of tigers still live in the wild, have put into circulation a joint series dedicated to this Forum.
On September 5, 2022, the day of this Forum organized in Vladivostok, the postal administration of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar put into circulation a series of 3 stamps (200 MMK) including the logo of this 2nd Tiger Forum (a human hand on a tiger footprint) as well as the mention "Myanmar - Russia" (one of the tigers is represented in front of the Moscow Kremlin).
This series is present on this attractive illustrated envelope with First Day cancellations from the General Post Office in Yangon. Thank you very much Thein!
Among the 10 subspecies of tigers, 2 live in Myanmar, the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) and the Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti), quite similar (both featured in this series?).

This 2nd Tiger Forum was an opportunity to present the results of the implementation of the Global Tiger Recovery Program adopted in 2010 during the 1st Tiger Forum organized in Saint-Petersburg, and to define other objectives and concrete actions to ensure the conservation of a sustainable global tiger population.
The 9 countries that participated in this joint issue are Russia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, North Korea, China, Myanmar, Malaysia (souvenir sheet issued on March 17, 2022, with overprint) and India.
The 5 other countries participating in this Forum: Bhutan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand and Nepal.
It seems that this Myanmar stamp set is the very first in the country having the tiger for theme.

"Yangon University 100th anniversary" souvenir sheet on FDC from Myanmar

Yangon University, founded in 1920, is Myanmar's oldest university and has played an important role in the life of the nation by nurturing future leaders and undertaking ground-breaking research.
Today, the University is going through a process of revitalization, with about twenty departments ranging from anthropology to zoology and covering all major arts and science subjects as well as law.
Research is increasingly focusing on the application of academic disciplines to the challenges facing development in Myanmar. In recent years, the University has established new links with leading universities in the ASEAN region, wider Asia, Europe and North America to broaden and intensify its research output and develop its international profile.
On May 20, 2020, the Post of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar put into circulation a souvenir sheet (200 MMK) dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the establishment of this University of Yangon (Yangon, the economic capital of the country, was the capital until 2006 when it was replaced by Naypyidaw by the ruling military junta).

This souvenir sheet (print run: 100,000) is present on this attractive illustrated envelope with First Day cancellation from the General Post Office in Yangon. Thank you very much Thein!
Yangon University was founded in 1920, when University College (Rangoon College, secular) and Judson College (affiliated with Baptists) were merged by the University Act.
Yangon University has been at the center of civil discontent throughout its history. The three national strikes against the British administration (1920, 1936 and 1938) began on this campus. Leaders of the Burmese independence movement, such as General Aung San, U Nu, Ne Win, and U Thant, are among the most notable alumni of this university.
The tradition of student protest at the university continued in the post-colonial era in 1962, 1974, 1988 (300 deaths during peaceful demonstrations demanding the establishment of democracy), 1996 or 2014.
The stamp of this souvenir sheet (including the university's emblem featuring a peacock) shows in particular the Convocation Hall, one of the emblematic buildings of this university where, among other things, the graduation ceremonies take place.

ASEAN 2015 joint stamps & other topics on cover from Myanmar

I have already mentioned on this blog this joint issue entitled "ASEAN Community" issued jointly by the 10 ASEAN member countries (Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei Darussalam).
As a reminder, that stamp was officially issued in almost all these countries on August 8, 2015 to commemorate (day to day) the 48th anniversary of the creation of ASEAN.
The Postal Administration of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar was, I think, the only one to issue two stamps (100 and 500 MMK) as part of this joint issue.
These two stamps appear at the top left on this impressive registered letter sent on October 27, 2017 from the city of Bagan (a pity for this registered label applied on a part of the stamps...).
This ASEAN thematic is also in the spotlight on the two other small stamps below (100 and 500 MMK), issued on November 21, 2016 on the occasion of the 23rd ASEAN postal business meeting, organized from 21 to 23 November 2016 in Yangon.

The panoramic stamp (100 MMK) is part of a series of 2 stamps, issued on January 4, 2013 to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Independence Day (from United Kingdom in 1948).
That stamp refers to the country's new capital since 2005, Naypyidaw, and to the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw complex in particular, home to the country's parliament ("Assembly of the Union") made up of the House of Nationalities (Amyotha Hluttaw) and the House of Representatives (Pyithu Hluttaw).
The 3 stamps over that stamp (100, 100 and 200 MMK), issued on January 4, 2016, are dedicated to the same theme (68th anniversary of Independence Day) with in particular a stamp showing a night view of Central Square in Yangon and the former government palace.
The last three stamps (100, 200 and 500 MMK), on top of this letter, were issued on August 29, 2016 on the occasion of the Union Peace Conference - 21st Century Panglong, held in Naypyidaw.
This conference, in reference to the 1st Panglong Conference held in 1947 (which aimed at organizing the struggle for independence and the establishment of a unified Burmese republic), brought together the main ethnic groups of the country to work for national reconciliation and union peace, after years of government led by the military junta...

"27th Southeast Asian Games" sheetlet on cover from Myanmar

Thank you very much Hlwann for this nice registered letter sent on October 27, 2017 from the city of Bagan, famous for its vast Buddhist archaeological site, located in the central plain of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (formerly Burma), the new name of the country since October 21, 2010!
To note this other two-color postmark (blue and red) applied on October 30, 2017 in Yangon, the former capital (replaced in 2005 by Naypyidaw), including the mention "Foreign Post"?
To note also the application of the registered label on a part of the sheetlet used for postage, issued on September 2, 2013 on the occasion of the 27th Southeast Asian Games, organized from December 11 to 22, 2013 at Naypyidaw...

This sheetlet is composed of 8 stamps (4 pairs of identical stamps but with different values, 100 MMK and 500 MMK).
After 1961 and 1969, Myanmar organized for the third time these Southeast Asian games (34 sports) with nearly 4,800 athletes from 11 countries of this region of the world, the 10 ASEAN countries (Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei) + East Timor.
Thailand (284 medals including 108 gold) dominated the medal standings, ahead of Myanmar (231 medals, 84 gold) and Vietnam (245 medals, 74 gold).
These stamps represent the logo of these games, showing an athlete with a ball (the set recalling the map of Myanmar), displaying the colors of the country's flag (green, yellow, red), inside a yellow circle, symbolizing complete perfection and endless prosperity among these 11 countries.
The 2 mascots of these games, Shwe Yoe and Ma Moe, two owls, are also present on 6 of the 8 stamps (holding hands or brandishing a torch).
Owl, a wise and calm animal, is considered a lucky charm in the Burmese tradition.

65 years of diplomatic relations with Russia in Myanmar

Merci beaucoup Edna :-)
The USSR officially established diplomatic relations with Myanmar (Burma at the time) in 1948, the year of its independence (from UK).
To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of these diplomatic relations (with Russia today), the postal administration of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar put into circulation on 10 April 2013, a special stamp (500 kyat) with a panoramic format.
It is that stamp which was used to frank the letter below, posted in Rangoon (Yangon), the country's capital until 2007, on April 22, 2015. Thank you very much Edna :-)

That stamp, bearing the colors (yellow, green, red) of the national flag, adopted in 2010, however is not a joint issue with the Russian Post.
During these 65 years, the USSR and then Russia were rather an ally of Myanmar, Russia often opposing placing sanctions (in the UN Security Council) against the ruling junta or signing a controversial cooperation deal (in 2007) in the field of nuclear research...
That stamp is featuring some landmarks of Moscow to the right (Saint Basil's Cathedral on Red Square, Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower) and, if I'm not wrong, the famous Shwedagon Pagoda reflecting in the Kandawgyi Lake in Rangoon, to the left.

Nouvelle lettre du Myanmar

A new cover from Myanmar

Thank you very much Kevin for allowing me, through this cover, to discuss once again about Burma (Republic of the Union of Myanmar), which finally comes back on the international scene with many signs of opening (release of political prisoners, limiting censorship, recognition of political parties...). Long may it continue !
This letter was mailed on January 20, 2012 from Yangon, the former capital of the country.
The two identical stamps (100 kyat) at the bottom, issued in 2000, are part of a set devoted to traditional musical instruments, a brass gong from the Kachin State (Burma's north-easternmost State) here.

The two other stamps, also identical, are part of a series of two stamps, issued on January 4, 2010, to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the independence of the country (from United Kingdom in 1948).
This stamp set is very special because the words included on these two stamps appear only in Burmese (the country name and nominal value are usually mentioned also in English).
This stamp (200 kyat) refers to the country's new capital since 2005, Naypyidaw, and to the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw complex in particular.
This building is home to the country's parliament ("Assembly of the Union") made up of the House of Nationalities (Amyotha Hluttaw) and the House of Representatives (Pyithu Hluttaw).

Lettre du Myanmar du 11.11.11 !

A 11.11.11 cover from Myanmar !

A short post to show you a new special letter mailed on this famous date of 11.11.11, this time from the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (formerly Burma).
Thank you very much Thitar for this registered cover mailed from Thingangyun township, located in the eastern part of Rangoon, the commercial center and largest city in the country :-)

Thitar has used six identical se-tenant stamps (10 kyat) about which I do not have unfortunately found any information.
This stamp seems to be part of a set of two stamps issued in 1993, featuring cultural antiquities, maybe a golden statue of Buddha here (dating from which period ?)...

Harpe traditionnelle au Myanmar

Traditional Harp in Myanmar

Between 1998 and 2000, the postal administration of the Union of Myanmar (formerly Burma) has issued a series of six stamps devoted to traditional musical instruments of the country.
Among these six stamps, a stamp (30 kyat) issued in 1999 featured a traditional Burmese Harp, also known as saung or saung-gauk.

This is this stamp that appears in three copies on the registered letter above mailed from the general post office in Yangon, the former capital.
Thank you very much Thitar :-)

Except the mentions "REG" and "YANGON G.P.O.", the hand postmarks are including only Burmese charcaters, including the send date...
This saung-gauk harp (between 13 and 16 strings) would exist since the 8th century, but its music has become familiar in the 18th century when this instrument was used to accompany the Rāmāyana, one of the basic writings of Hinduism.

1ère lettre du Myanmar !

My first cover from Myanmar !

Thank you very much Thitar for this nice registered cover mailed on November 18, 2010 from Yangon (formerly Rangoon), the ancient capital of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (formerly Burma), the new name of the country since October 21, 2010 !
Difficult however to ignore the dictatorial military regime that rules with an iron hand this beautiful country... hoping that all political prisoners will be released soon...
Too bad that the sticker including the registered barcode was affixed on the bottom margin of the souvenir sheet (with one stamp at 100 kyat featuring a family around a globe making grow a plant on the north pole, the region where the ozone (O3) layer is most threatened) below...

I'm however happy to have received this letter because the Post of Myanmar is almost never issuing any souvenir sheets (I wonder if this is not the first one ?).
To note the two different cancellations applied on this block : the blue FDC cancellation of November 18, 2010 and a classic (black ink) hand postmark from the general post office in Yangon.
Btw, as indicated (only in English) in the top margin, this issue commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, adopted on March 22, 1985. This Convention, not restrictive, aims to increase international cooperation to limit the risks that human activities pose to the ozone layer.

To mark the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, on September 16, 2010 (which curiously took place on September 15 in Myanmar as mentioned on the photograph above !), established by the Ozone Secretariat of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Union of Myanmar has organized a National Celebration at the International Business Center in Yangon under the authority of the National Commission for Environmental Affairs (NCEA).
The NCEA's Director General is appearing to the right on the photo above, delivering the 1st Prize (of the design competition for commemorative postal stamp) to Ye Win (23 years old) who have designed this miniature sheet.
Ye Win has besides signed and dated (top left) the registered letter above :)
To note that the 250,000 miniature sheets had originally to be issued on October 24, 2010...
