"Dolls - 80 years of diplomatic relations" joint stamp set with Russia, on cover from Dominican Republic

Diplomatic relations between the USSR and the Dominican Republic were established on March 8, 1945.
Tourism has traditionally been the driving force behind the development of bilateral relations. Cooperation in the field of higher education and vocational training for Dominican citizens in Russia plays an important role in Russian-Dominican relations.
Furthermore, the Russian Federation and the Dominican Republic share common cultural traditions in decorative and applied arts, including traditional faceless dolls.
Such toys appeared in Russia in ancient times: it was believed that evil spirits could not penetrate a faceless doll and therefore could not harm either children or adults. Today, faceless dolls are an important part of the cultural heritage of both countries.
On July 22, 2025, the postal administrations of Russia and the Dominican Republic put into circulation a beautiful joint series (2 stamps) illustrating this theme of faceless dolls, as part of the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Dominican version of this joint series (design: Alejandro Vignieri and photograph by Mario Adams, print run: 15,000 for each stamp) was used on the cover above, sent on July 30, 2025, from Santo Domingo, the country's capital. Thank you very much, Alejandro!
Muñecas Limé, also known as Dominican faceless dolls, are a renowned craft of the Dominican Republic and Dominican households. Over 40 years ago, in 1981, potter Liliana Mera Limé began sculpting small clay dolls in Moca, in the Cibao region.
Each red clay (or corn flour) figurine was given a smooth surface, devoid of facial features. Thus, Muñecas Limé (Limé dolls) became faceless Dominican dolls and a symbol of the country's ethnic and cultural diversity.
The stamp above left (100 DOP) depicts a contemporary Limé doll, created by Mario Emilio Adams Diaz.
The other stamp (75 DOP) features Russian folk dolls, "Girl and Violinist", from the Kursk region, created by Ekaterina Chernook.
Russian folk dolls are made from fabric, birch bark, and straw. Once used as amulets against evil spirits, they are now a symbol of Russian culture.

"150 years of diplomatic relations" joint stamp with Peru, on cover from Dominican Republic

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations on April 6, 1874, Peru and the Dominican Republic have developed close ties of friendship and cooperation, as well as a broad bilateral agenda on issues of mutual interest.
This relationship, based on shared values and principles such as the promotion and defense of democracy, human rights, the full validity of international law, and development cooperation, has led to the identification of areas of convergence in areas as diverse as health, tourism, the fight against corruption, air services, judicial cooperation, drug trafficking, and climate change.
Over time, and thanks to this broad agenda, the Dominican Republic has become one of Peru's main partners in the Caribbean, not only politically and diplomatically, but also economically and commercially.
On November 13, 2024, the postal administrations of Peru and the Dominican Republic put into circulation a joint issue (2 stamps and 1 stamp respectively) dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the establishment of these diplomatic relations

The Dominican version of this stamp (150 DOP, unknown print run), imperforated, was used on the above cover sent recently (no date on the cancellation...) from Santo Domingo, the capital of the country. Thank you very much Alejandro!
This stamp shows on the right the Government Palace of Peru, the seat of government in Lima, the official residence of the President of the Republic, and the seat of the executive branch.
This building (architects: Claude Antoine Sahut Laurent, Ricardo de Jaxa Malachowski) was built between 1926 and 1938 in a French-inspired neo-baroque style.
The left part depicts the National Palace, located in Santo Domingo, which houses the offices of the executive branch (presidency and vice-presidency) of the Dominican Republic.
Designed in a sober neoclassical style by Italian architect Guido D'Alessandro at the request of Dominican President Rafael Trujillo, its construction began in 1944 (centennial of Dominican independence) and it was inaugurated in 1947. The National Palace, with its 18-meter diameter dome, is considered one of the most beautiful buildings constructed in the Dominican Republic.
The coats of arms and flags of both countries are featured in the lower part.
To note that the two countries had already issued a joint series in 2018 (historical and friendship ties).

"150 years of the UPU 1874-2024" stamp on cover from Dominican Republic

In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) celebrated its 150th anniversary. On October 9, 1874, 22 countries gathered to sign the Treaty of Bern, creating the General Postal Union, which would later become known as the Universal Postal Union (from 1878).
150 years later, the UPU now unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, having realized its founders' vision of establishing a single postal territory to serve people everywhere.
The UPU's theme for its 150th year, "150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations", recognizes this accomplishment, and reinforces its commitment to serve peoples for the decades and centuries to come.
Throughout 2024, the UPU organized a series of events and campaigns in celebration of its rich past, dedicated present and promising future, in particular using the hashtag #UPU150 on social media.

The UPU, a specialized agency of the United Nations (since 1947) headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, is the second oldest international organization after the International Telecommunications Union, and constitutes the main forum for cooperation between global postal sector players.
On October 26, 2024, the Dominican Postal Institute (Instituto Postal Dominicano - Inposdom) put into circulation a stamp dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the UPU.
This stamp (150 DOP, print run: 10,000) was used on the above cover sent recently (no date on the cancellation...) from Santo Domingo, the capital of the country. Thank you very much Alejandro!
This stamp simply reproduces the official logo of this 150th anniversary, created by the UPU.
The Dominican Republic has been a member of the UPU since October 1, 1880.

"60 years of diplomatic relations with the Dominican Republic" joint set on FDC from Morocco

Merci beaucoup Pierre !
On March 25, 2021, the postal administrations of Morocco and the Dominican Republic put into circulation a joint series (2 stamps) on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
This series devoted to sites of the two countries listed as World Heritage by UNESCO should have been issued in 2020 but was postponed due to the global Covid-19 pandemic (hence the stamps already printed with the year "2020").
The Moroccan version of this joint set, two se-tenant stamps (print run: 50,000 each) designed by Noureddine Noury and printed in France by Philaposte, are present on this nice official numbered FDC (No 001215), sent on July 5, 2021 from the city of Meknes. Thank you very much Pierre!

The Dominican Republic is one of the main partners of the Kingdom of Morocco in this Caribbean region, Morocco being one of the only 3 African countries (with Egypt and South Africa) to have an embassy in Santo Domingo (since 2009). Moreover, the Dominican Republic has always been alongside Morocco regarding the integrity of its territory and the question of Western Sahara.
The first stamp of this joint series (3.75 dirhams) is dedicated to the Alcázar de Colón, considered the first fortified palace built in the Americas (in 1514), located in the colonial part of Santo Domingo, listed as a World Heritage Site in UNESCO in 1990. This building is the only known residence that belonged to the family of Christopher Columbus in the New World.
The other stamp (9 dirhams) illustrates another UNESCO World Heritage site (since 2012), the Kasbah of the Udayas, located in Rabat, the capital. Built in the 10th century by the Almoravids as a defense fort, this kasbah, an Arab-Muslim architectural masterpiece, then became the home of Sultan Moulay Ismail in Rabat. This site has housed the National Museum of Jewelry since 1915.

"250th birth anniversary of Beethoven" stamp on cover from Dominican Republic

Merci beaucoup Alejandro !
Many postal administrations (Germany, Ukraine, France, Jersey, Guernsey, Serbian Republic of Bosnia, Monaco, Vatican City, Moldova, Portugal, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Lebanon, Romania, SMOM, Gibraltar, Austria, Croatia, Brazil, Faroe Islands, Liechtenstein, Serbia, Costa Rica, Poland, Israel, Mexico, Vietnam, Malta, Azerbaijan, Uruguay, HP Mostar, Macau, Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Albania, Spain, Guatemala ...) have issued stamps in 2020 commemorating the 250th anniversary of the birth of the German composer and pianist Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), probably one of the most famous musicians around the world, with Mozart.
On March 19, 2021 (one year late due to the Covid-19 pandemic), the Dominican Postal Institute (Instituto Postal Dominicano - Inposdom) put into circulation a stamp on this theme, used on this letter sent recently (unfortunately no postmark ...) from Santo Domingo, the capital of the country. Thank you very much Alejandro!

This stamp (RD $ 250.00, print run: 20,000), designed by Alejandro Vignieri (who signed under the stamp!), was unveiled in collaboration with the German Embassy and the Fundación Sinfonía, created in 1986 with the purpose of rescuing the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic.
The stamp was designed from a famous portrait of the musician (composing the Missa solemnis, part of the score of which is included in the background on this stamp?) dating from 1820, by the German painter Joseph Karl Stieler, exhibited in his birthplace in Bonn.
To note that the official logo of the celebrations of this 250th anniversary, "BTHVN2020", reminding that Beethoven sometimes signed some of his scores and letters with only the 5 consonants of his name, is not present on this stamp.
With his immortal music, Beethoven is considered a radical artist and a creative visionary, having passionately defended the ideals of freedom and brotherhood, in particular through his Symphony No. 9 composed between 1822 and 1824, having deeply influenced the history of music in the 19th and 20th century.

On August 27, 2019, the Dominican Postal Institute (Instituto Postal Dominicano - Inposdom) put into circulation a stamp dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948).
This stamp (RD $ 100.00, print run: 20,000), designed by Alejandro Vignieri, was unveiled in the room "Eduardo La Torre" of the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the presence of Madhu Sethi, ambassador of the Republic of India, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miguel Vargas, and the Director General of Inposdom, Dr. Modesto Guzmán.
A big thank you Alejandro for this FDC sent by registered mail from Santo Domingo, regarding this stamp!

This stamp was designed from one of the many portraits of Gandhi with his famous smiling face, with the flag of India in the background.
Mahatma Gandhi, born in 1869 in Pordanbar (state of Gujarat), nicknamed the "Father of the Nation" in India, was one of the pioneers of the country's independence movement, advocating disobedience, non-violence and the concept of "swaraj" (self-determination).
On January 30, 1948, on the way to a prayer meeting, Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a nationalist Hindu.
Outside India, it seems that a hundred postal administrations have issued or will put into circulation this year stamps dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gandhi, a record I think!

Dominican Republic - Peru joint stamp issue: Historical and friendship relations

On February 7, 2018, the postal administrations of the Dominican Republic (Inposdom) and Peru (Serpost) put into circulation an interesting souvenir sheet (2 stamps) devoted to the theme of historical and friendship ties ("Lazos Históricos y de Amistad") between the 2 countries.
The Dominican version of this souvenir sheet as used on the cover below with First Day cancellation from Santo Domingo on the left. Thank you very much Alejandro!
This souvenir sheet (print run: 25,000), designed by Alejandro Vignieri, pays tribute in particular to two great figures of the independence movement and the struggle against the Spanish occupation in the two countries, Gregorio Luperón (1839-1897) for the Dominican Republic and Ramón Castilla y Marquesado (1797-1867) for Peru.

The portraits of the two characters are featured on these two stamps (RD $ 50.00 each) with the flags of each country in the background.
The lower margin evokes two emblematic and tourist sites of the two countries, the Pico Duarte (3,098 meters above sea level), highest point of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean, and the famous Machu Pichu (2,438 meters of altitude), ancient Inca city in 15th century, one of the symbols of Peru today.
Gregorio Luperón was a patriot, general, revolutionary, minister of war and provisional president of the Dominican Republic (in 1879-1880).
Ramón Castilla y Marquesado was a caudillo, president of Peru 4 times but especially a military figure, participating in several battles against Spain, and a political figure (abolition of slavery, development of the economy, modernization of the state).

UPAEP 2016 (Olympiads) stamp set on cover from Dominican Republic

As a reminder, UPAEP (Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal) is a restricted union of the UPU, established in 1911, bringing together about thirty countries and territories.
Such as EUROPA stamps, America-UPAEP stamps are issued every year since 1989, with on average between 15 and 20 participating countries.
After the topic "fight against human trafficking" in 2015 and before "tourist places" in 2017, the theme chosen for these UPAEP stamps in 2016 was devoted to the Olympiads, presumably to celebrate the first Olympic Games in history ever organized in South America, in Rio de Janeiro.
As it is the case each year since 1989, the postal administration of the Dominican Republic (Instituto Postal Dominicano or INPOSDOM) has put into circulation, on October 18 2016, a UPAEP series consisting of 4 se-tenant stamps.
Thank you very much Alejandro for this beautiful letter sent by registered mail on April 3, 2017 from Santo Domingo, the capital, franked with this complete set!

Alejandro Vignieri is the designer of almost all the stamps issued by INPOSDOM since 2008 and was kind enough to sign on this envelope.
Through these 4 stamps (RD $15, print run : 80,000 each), the Dominican Post wanted to recall the sporting disciplines in which the Dominican athletes were distinguished at the summer Olympic Games.
Since its first participation in 1964 at the Games in Tokyo, Dominican Republic has won a total of 8 medals (3 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze), in athletics (3 medals), boxing (2 medals), weightlifting (1 medal) and taekwondo (2 medals).
At the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, the Dominican delegation was composed of 29 athletes engaged in 11 sports and won a bronze medal in taekwondo (Luisito Pié in the men's 58kg event).
It should be noted that the issue of these 4 stamps (each including the UPAEP logo and the Rio 2016 Games logo) coincided with the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Dominican Olympic Committee.

Dominican Republic-Switzerland joint stamp issue : Natural landscapes

On November 17, 2016, the two postal administrations of Switzerland and the Dominican Republic (Instituto Postal Dominicano or INPOSDOM) put into circulation a joint series of 2 stamps devoted to natural landscapes of the two countries, in order to celebrate the 80 years of their diplomatic relations.
It was rather a so-called "parallel" issue since the two postal administrations issued different stamps, featuring water landscapes in Switzerland and mountain landscapes in the Dominican Republic.
After the Swiss version, I'm happy to share with you my first letter received from the Dominican Republic, franked with the Dominican version of this joint issue (two RD $60 stamps). Thank you very much Alejandro for this beautiful letter sent by registered mail on March 21, 2017 from Santo Domingo, the capital!

Alejandro (Vignieri) is the designer of almost all the stamps issued by INPOSDOM since 2008 and was kind enough to sign on this envelope.
As in the case of the two Swiss stamps, this series was printed in a sheetlet composed of 8 se-tenant pairs of stamps, with mention of this joint issue in Spanish in the top margin (above) and in German in the lower margin.
The Matterhorn, the most famous mountain in Switzerland (4478 meters high), as well as the Pico Isabel de Torres (855 meters high), located near the city of Puerto Plata (northern Dominican Republic), are depicted on the two stamps above.
This Pico Isabel de Torres is accessible via a cable car "El Teleférico" (inaugurated in 1975, the only cable car in this Caribbean region) and a botanical garden and a replica of the statue of Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro are located at its summit.
After using stamps from the Spanish West Indies between 1861 and 1865, the country issued its own stamps from 1865 (without mentioning the name of the country, only for domestic postal traffic). The first stamps including the name of the country were issued in 1880, one year before the Dominican Republic was admitted to the UPU.

Switzerland-Dominican Republic joint stamp issue : Natural landscapes

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, Switzerland and the Dominican Republic put into circulation, on November 17, 2016, a joint set of two stamps devoted to natural landscapes of the two countries.
It is rather a so-called "parallel" issue since the two postal administrations issued completely different stamps, featuring water landscapes in Switzerland and mountain landscapes in the Dominican Republic...
The Swiss version of this issue, consisting of two se-tenant stamps (CHF 1.00 each), printed in a same sheet composed of 8 pairs of stamps, was used on the letter below sent on the first day of issue from Lausanne.

To note the special cachet on the bottom left specially edited by the Swiss Post between November 3 and 6, 2016, during the last "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" in Paris. This cachet refers to a stamp series "Nocturnal Animals" (4 stamps, one representing a tawny owl) issued on May 4, 2016.
The two stamps above (design : Brigit Herrmann), bearing the respective flags of the two countries (with a rectangular Swiss flag instead of a square one ??), represent the Lakes of Fenêtre, a wild site of Val Ferret (2500 meters high) in the Swiss canton of Valais and the famous Dominican beach of Bavaro, located on the north coast of the seaside resort of Punta Cana (eastern end of the country).

The Matterhorn, the most famous mountain in Switzerland (4478 meters high), as well as the Pico Isabel de Torres (793 meters high), located near the city of Puerto Plata (northern Dominican Republic), are depicted on the two stamps above issued by the Dominican Post.
The Dominican Central Cordillera is composed of the highest peaks of the Caribbean (more than 3000 meters high), curious that one of these summits was not chosen on this series...
Interestingly, the two countries, having good diplomatic, economic and cultural relations, have some similarities : their number of inhabitants (10 million for DR, 8.5 million for Switzerland) and country's area (48,000 km2 for DR, 41,000 km2 for Switzerland).
