Nouvelle lettre d'Australie

New Cover from Australia

A little change of scenery today with this letter from the antipodes !
Thank you very much Ben for this colorful surprise :-) Unfortunately, as you can see, I received this letter without any cancellation...
Lets' begin with these beautiful butterflies on the right being part of a series of 4 stamps, issued on May 4, 2004, representing species living in the Australian rainforests. That was the last definitive issue, which began in 1996, devoted to the Nature of Australia.
This one was dedicated to the humid tropics region of Queensland, particularly the Daintree forests in the north-east of the country. This region was included on the list of natural World Heritage sites by UNESCO in 1988. This unique biotope contains the largest number of plant and animal species threatened in the world and is home to 65% of species of butterflies living in Australia, whose red Cethosia cydippe (5c) and blue Hypolimnas alimena (10c) on this cover :-)

The 20c stamp is also part of the Nature of Australia set consisting of 4 stamps issued on April 10, 1997, devoted to the wetlands of the Kakadu National Park, located in the Northern Territory. This Park is one of the 25 sites in the world to be both classified as a cultural and as a natural heritage site by UNESCO since 1981. The Park is inhabited by humans (aboriginal territory) for more than 40.000 years and is home to many rare or endemic species such as Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), the largest living reptile, on this stamp. It's the same Crocodile that also appears on the two 30c stamps issued on March 10, 2004 with 2 other values.
I've already mentioned in a previous post the "Air Balloon" on the left. The last 50c stamp is one of the 3 stamps issued on March 4, 2008 to announce the holding of the World Youth Day (WYD), an event organized by the Catholic church, in Sydney from 15 to 20 July 2008. On this occasion, Pope Benedict XVI will make his 1st visit to Australia and nearly 500.000 people are expected at the final Mass in his presence at Randwick Racecourse. The stamp shows the Pope greeting during a Mass and is the first Australian stamp representing a foreign head of state.
The Australia Post has put up for sale on this occasion two FDC with the same stamp in a 9 carat gold version (500 copies at $129.95) and in a sterling silver version (5000 copies at $29.95) !
Note that Australia Post very often shows living people on its stamps through its "Australian Legends" series or its athletes...

(ANZAC = "Australian and New Zealand Army Corps").

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old :
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them".

Ben also sent me this beautiful FDC document above issued on April 16, 2008 with the souvenir sheet of 5 stamps devoted to ANZAC Day, celebrated annually on April 25 to commemorate Australian and New Zealand soldiers during WWI (Gallipoli in Turkey in particular).
(ANZAC = "Australian and New Zealand Army Corps").
We find the words "Lest We Forget" on this sheet, which often appears on the commemorative Anglo-Saxon stamps dealing with this period, such as the last British series of 8 November 2007 commemorating the 90 years of the Passchendaele Battle.
These five stamps capture the different faces of Australia and Gallipoli during this Day, considered as the most important national celebration in the country.
Each stamp features an extract of the 4th stanza of the poem "For the Fallen" by Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), recited each year during the ANZAC Day :

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old :
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them ".

It's worth noting finally the original cross-shaped FDC cancellation held at Soldiers Hill (VIC) !

3 nouveaux courriers d'Allemagne !

3 new covers from Germany !

A short geographical trip today beyond the Rhine river...but a long journey in time between 1968 and 2008 !
Thank you Thomas for this first letter mailed on June 13, 2008 from Wurzen :-)
The yellow large-format stamp was issued on May 8, 2008 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Christoffel Blind Mission (CBM). The German pastor Ernst Jakob Christoffel created this Christian mission in 1908 in Turkey to improve the living conditions of blind, deaf, mental or physical disabilities people. 18 million people through more than 1000 projects in 113 countries today enjoy the support of the CBM.
Again, congratulations to the Deutsche Post for the simple but so explicit design ! But what means the text in Braille in the left margin ?

The other €0.55 stamp in the middle was also issued on May 8, 2008 with another stamp (bearing the EUROPA mention) forming part of the "Greetings for all occasions" series of the German Post. Two other stamps, "everything is fine" and "Congratulations", had already been issued on February 7, 2008. This stamp features the words "Thank you" ("Danke" in German). For this series, the German Post has had the good idea to choose the pop-art American artist James Rizzi ! It was the 1st time that his works were found on stamps but also the 1st time that the German government appealed to a foreign living artist...
The 10 pfennig stamp down on the right celebrated Stamp's Day in 1976. It shows a "Salvaguardia" post office's sign dating from 1770, when the postal service was run by the Thurn and Taxis & the Kaiserliche Reichspost.
Surprising to find Karl Marx (1818-1883) on a stamp on this side of the wall, isn't it ? Yet he appears well on the last stamp of the Deutsche Bundespost in the upper left ! This stamp was issued in 1968 to commemorate 150 years of the birth of the famous anticapitalist at the origin of Marxism...

The letter above is actually a Postal Stationery with one of the two Rizzi stamps ("Congratulations") issued in February 2008 ! Note the third fish with the signature of the painter in the bottom left on the cover :-)
Thank you very much Igor for this original letter mailed on June 12, 2008 in Norderstedt, not far Hamburg :-)
On June 12 took place the "First Day of issue" of the new series of 4 semipostal stamps for the benefit of social works, devoted to aircrafts. This one represents a twin-engine German seaplane Dornier Do J Wal ("Wal" meaning whale in German) manufactured in the 1920's. The reference in the bottom left margin of each sheet of 10 stamps teaches us that this plane could reach 230 km/h !
It should be noted that one of the three other stamps in this same set shows an A380 with an original way : it is represented in flight but with a rear view...This is this same A380, which is on the pretty special cancellation issued during the airshow in Norderstedt. This postmark also commemorates the 25 years of philately in the region.

Igor also sent me the other interesting letter above with a special cancellation of June 8, 2008. That day, the Dresden Airport organized the "Neighbours Day" ("Nachbarschaftstag") for the Aeronautics enthusiasts. 2008 also marks the 50 years of manufacturing of the first four-engine East-German jet in Dresden, the "152". It's so logical to find this aircraft at the centre of this cancellation.
Igor had the good idea to choose a stamp representing one of the most famous monuments of Dresden, the Semper Opera ! This stamp was issued on November 13, 2003 to commemorate the 200 years of the birth of its architect, Gottfried Semper (1803-1879). Its construction will begin in 1838, it will then be burned in 1869, bombed in 1945, flooded in 2002 but will be saved at each time...
The postage was completed with a €0.15 "letter box" ATM.

Arts traditionnels en Turquie

The Turkish Post definitely likes the large-format stamps. A new proof with these two letters received recently !
The first one was mailed on June 5, 2008 from the town of Kuşadası, a summer resort on the Aegean Sea. Thank you very much Vural :-)
The right stamp, issued on June 22, 2005, is part of a 2 stamps joint issue with Belgium, on the theme of the art of weaving. It represents a carpet ("Halılar" in Turkish) from the region of Hereke (not far from Istanbul), where were founded imperial factories in 1843. For more than 3.000 years, the Turkish craftsmen are masters in the art of carpet weaving in silk or wool, in particular through the unique technique of the double knot. The motifs of Hereke's carpets, often made of flowers (as on the stamp), are dating from the Ottoman period.

The other 70 Y. Kuruş stamp of this series shows a Flemish tapestry from the 16th century entitled "Humanity attacked by the seven deadly sins" and preserved in the Royal Museums of Art and History of Brussels. Note that contrary to the Turkish stamps, the two Belgian values (with a different layout) don't mention that this is a joint issue with Turkey. But this mention is included in the margins of the sheets of 10 Belgian stamps.
The 70 Y. Kuruş stamp on the left was issued on July 3, 2005 to announce the holding of the 22nd International Congress of Architecture in Istanbul. This Congress is organized every 3 years by the UIA (International Union of Architectes) and had as its theme "Cities : Grand Bazaar of architectureS" rather appropriate for Istanbul ! We find this statement symbolized in the triangular orange logo in the upper right on the stamp, the work of the German graphist designer Andreas Uebele, congratulations !
The stamp shows a magnificent view of Istanbul with the Galata Tower and the Golden Horn in the foreground and, it seems to me, the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia in the background...
The 23rd UIA Congress will take place from June 29 to July 3, 2008 in Turin, Italy.

The 2nd letter above allows us to share another Turkish traditional Art : marbling ("Ebru" in Turkish).
Thank you Baris for this cover mailed on May 12, 2008 from Bursa :-)
The Turkish Post has issued two stamps, on December 6, 2007, dedicated to this paper marbling technique which date from the mid-19th century in Turkey.
Note that these two stamps were surcharged (+10 Y. Kuruş), who benefits from this surcharge ?
These patterns are obtained by the flotation of colors on the surface of a liquid solution and then by the application of these colors on a sheet of paper (or on a fabric...). The result is close to a marble surface, hence the name of this Art !
The today's marbled paper are often made with floral patterns, as on the stamp and illustration of the cover above.
The last stamp in the upper left, not cancelled, is part of the definitive series representing the Turkish provinces. It is part of a set of 16 stamps issued on December 4, 2007 and represents the province of Tunceli (called Dersim until 1936), located in Anatolia in the east of the country and with a Zaza predominantly population, speaking Zazaki, close to the Kurdish language.

Courriers de Chine

Covers from China

41 days before the opening of the 29th Summer Olympics in Beijing !
I take this opportunity to wish good luck to the whole French Olympic team :-))
On 8 August 2006, 2 years before the start of these games, the Chinese Post issued its 1st set of stamps devoted to sports.
We find these 4 stamps on the pretty cover below mailed on June 4, 2008 from the city of Tianjin (天津). Thank you Zhang Jia Ming :-)
Each stamp represents a sport with the pictogram used during these games.

From left to right :
Basketball, with 12 teams qualified for men and women (France is not represented...), the events will take place in the Wukesong Olympic Gymnasium.
The 11 sailing events will take place at the Qingdao sailing center. France will be represented in all 11 events...I'm crossing my fingers !
The 6 individual events and 4 team events in fencing will take place in the Fencing Hall in the National Convention Center. This is the sport which has generated the most medals to France, I hope it'll continue !
The Chinese team will be the favorite, at home, in the artistic gymnastics events taking place in the National Indoor Stadium.
The last stamp on the left is part of the splendid defintive series representing Chinese birds (congratulations to the artist, Huang Huaqiang). It was issued on February 1, 2002 with two other stamps, constituting the first issue of this series, and represents a Yellow-bellied Tragopan, a vulnerable pheasant species living in mountain forests in south-eastern China.

Not so common to receive a letter from China stamped with a souvenir sheet !
Thank you very much Tse Lai Kwong for this nice cover mailed on May 23, 2008 from Tianjin, Dagang District :-)
This sheet was issued on July 28, 2007 to announce the 6th congress of the All-China Philatelic Federation (probably the equivalent of our French FFAP...), which took place on 28 and 29 July 2007 in Beijing.
It represents a bronze plate, dating from the Western Xia Dynasty, a state founded by the Tangut (1032-1227). This object was used to rapidly transmit the orders of the Emperor. I don't know if the four characters on this piece are in tangout or Chinese ? And what do they mean ?
It's worth noting that this beautiful sheet has been printed in offset and also engraved.

On May 12 this year occured a terrible earthquake of magnitude 7.9 in China, in the Sichuan province. The epicentre was located in the Wenchuan district, 80 km from the city of Chengdu. The human toll could reach more than 80.000 people dead and nearly 400.000 injured.
Many countries have offered their assistance to the Chinese government and a great solidarity with this affected region was born across all China.
The Chinese Post issued on May 20, only 8 days after the disaster, a semipostal stamp (1.20+1 yuan) to help relief workers and victims. This stamp is unusual because the surcharge of 1 yuan does not appear directly on the stamp but on an attached label. This stamp appears in the upper right on the cecogram above (Thanks Zhou Fan !).
Also note the red inkpad in the lower left with the coordinates (longitude and latitude) of the epicentre of this earthquake...

The stamp on this last letter above reminds me some very good memories as it represents the Marble Boat, one of the many monuments of the Summer Palace (Yiheyuan), which I had the chance to visit in 2004 :-)
This stamp is part of a set of 6 stamps and a souvenir sheet issued on May 10, 2008, with mixed offset/intaglio printing. The Summer Palace is located beside Kunming Lake, not far from Beijing. This extraordinary site, on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998, was looted and destroyed by the Anglo-French troops (blasted French !) in 1860 and then in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion. The Empress Cixi will rebuild the Palace by spending astronomical sums...
This masterpiece of the art of Chinese landscape garden is composed of many pavilions, temples, bridges...I especially remember this incredible painted corridor with its more than 700 meters length !

3 nouvelles lettres de Croatie !

Three new covers from Croatia !

I've received many beautiful letters from all over the world in recent weeks...
Thank you to all of you ! But the result is that their publications on my blog is coming with an important delay...
I dedicate this Thursday to Croatia through the three beautiful letters below.
The first postage is composed with the 2 stamps (kn 3.5 and kn 5), issued on May 9, 2008, from the EUROPA series whose theme is "The Letter" this year.
The EUROPA logo complies with with the recommendations of PostEurop (including in the margins of the sheets !). The Croatian Post has even used the same typeface in writing Pismo ("Letter" in Croatian)... Thank you very much Dubravko for this letter mailed from Belišće :-)

The Croatian Post had the very good idea to make the link between this issue and the 2005-2008 period, dedicated to literacy in the world by the United Nations.
The stamp on the right represents a sealed letter, reminding that the sealing wax was invented by the Chinese before being widely used in France from the 16th century...
Note that a glossy varnish was applied by thermography on the seal on the stamp ! This reminds the French stamp issued recently celebrating 40 years of the 1st heart transplant in Europe, with a similar varnish on the heart :-)
The stamp on the left symbolizes the sending of a letter by airmail, with an airplane in the upper left embossed printed !
Practically all European countries have now issued their EUROPA stamps this year, you can always choose your favourite on the PostEurop website. I'v' a preference for the funny Slovak stamp, with this cat writing with a real mouse !

Thank you very much Dragan for the 2 next letters mailed from Rijeka on June 9, 2008 :-)
The Croatian Post issues since this year some new types of stamps called "commercial" stamps. This is the case of the kn 2.30 stamp above with its advertising attached label for a famous German automobile brand and its current slogan "Das Auto"...
The stamp, issued on May 8, 2008, celebrates the most famous model of the make : the beetle, recalling that this is the best selling car in the world (20 million cars) until 2003 when its production was interrupted.
Note that this car appeared on a French stamp in 2000 as part of the "Youth Collection" devoted to ten old cars...
The Croatian Post has already issued its 2nd "commercial" stamp on May 16, 2008, devoted to the Croatian Adris Group, specialized in tobacco and tourism. I'm not a fan of these new types of stamps but they have the merit of not hide behind some pseudo personalized stamps...To be continued...

The 2nd round kn 3.50 stamp also found on the letter above (in a full version), was issued on May 14, 2008 to announce the European Football Championship ending in Switzerland and Austria at the end of this week. Note that the Croatian Post wisely chose a round-shaped stamp, referring to the represented balloons, as for the Euro 2004 in Portugal.
I love the simplicity of this stamp with these balloons flying in the sky...This stamp will not bring luck to the Croatian team, eliminated by Turkey in the quarter-finals. Germany is qualified for the finals even if Germans were beaten by Croatians in the preliminary phase...
The last kn 1.80 stamp commemorates the White cane safety Day ("Dan bijelog štapa" in Croatian), celebrated every October 15 in Croatia since 1996. This stamp was issued on October 15, 2006 to raise awareness of the problems in our societies encontered by the blind and visually impaired and for greater tolerance towards these people.
The stamp includes logically an embossed text in Braille (the first one of its kind in Croatia ?) meaning "White cane Day". Note the pictogram in the upper right on this stamp, also found on cecograms, about which I've already spoken on this blog...
Congratulations Dragan for our two cities coat of arms appearing on the letters :-)
To conclude, it's worth noting the curious shape of the Rijeka cancellation, not completely round ??

A new message today about my last visit to the "Salon du Timbre 2008" :-)
I was there on Thursday, June 19, the First Day of issue of the souvenir sheet about European major achievements and the "Gérard Garouste" stamp.
These are these two issues appearing on the cover below, with their respective FDC cancellations.
Gérard Garouste (born in 1946) is a French painter, sculptor, designer and illustrator. The figurative work represented on the stamp (a gouache on paper) has no title and was painted in 1989 when he made the curtain of the Châtelet theatre in Paris.

The stamps on the miniature sheet symbolize three great achievements in Europe and one stamp in the upper right, announcing the next French presidency of the European Union from July 1, 2008.
To my knowledge, this is the first time that France is issuing a stamp to celebrate this presidency...This stamp is the work of the famous French designer Philippe Starck. He'll also repackage soon the French € 2 coin.
The 3 selected projects are our common currency the Euro, the Erasmus student European exchange program and the new satellite navigation system Galileo. Note that these 3 stamps, and also the blue background of the sheet, were created by Yves Beaujard, creator and engraver of our new Marianne ! These stamps printed in rotogravure seem to be the very first not engraved Beaujard's stamps...
It is worth noting that this issue wasn't initially scheduled in the 2008 Philatelic program, which seems to become a habit since President Sarkozy is governing and seems to adapt the Stamp program according to the current events : Guy Môquet, next France-Israel joint issue, Mediterranean Summit of Paris in july...

Above the MonTimbràMoi stand, the service of personalized stamps by the French Post. It really was not the crowd at this stand as you can see on this photo showing the 2 cameras allowing to portray on site...I've to admit that the price (€1.20 for the internal priority rate stamp instead of €0.55 !) and the fact to show my head on an official French stamp was not encouraging...
But I've finally tried, here is the splendid result :

I especially thought to my readers who can so see me in an original way :-)
Please note that these self-adhesive stamps, available in sheet of 10, were issued on a board with two original and unique illustrations during this Fair : "Dahlias" and "Sea star", as on the board above...
And unlike those available on the MonTimbràMoi website, these boards include in the bottom left the date and hour of issue (instead of the usual bar code) and there's no serial number...

And I didn't left empty-handed the MonTimbràMoi stand ! I was indeed eligible for some little gifts, such as the print above with 4 stamps from the set about cities hosting matches of the Football World Cup in 1998, including Lyon, my city :-)
Each stamp shows an action during game with the colours of the football club of the city (red and blue for the "Olympique Lyonnais" club for example). It reminds the good times when France won international competitions !

An other gift above with an engraving showing the 4 values of the joint issue with Great Britain in 1994 for the opening of the Channel Tunnel.
At the time, this stamp's format was very unusual in Britain...
I was also eligible for a nice FDC of December 12, 1995 about the draw for the qualifying phase of the World Cup in France in 1998 and a lot issued in 2002 about the Salt Lake City Olympic Games (4 stamps, Philatelic document, engraving and a FDC notice). So generous !

Above another gift received at the stand of the CNEP (Chamber of Merchants and Experts in Philately). This pretty small sheet shows the engravings of the 5 stamps of the famous set "Monuments and Sites" issued between 1929 and 1931 : Arc de Triomphe, Mont St. Michel, Reims Cathedral, La Rochelle harbour and Pont du Gard.

Above a Postal Stationery issued by the New Caledonia Post and Telecommunications Office, present during this Exhibition.
This Postal Stationery with a blue pre-printed Cagou stamp is valid for up to 20g mails to France and French overseas territories. A representative stamp of the landscapes of paradise on the islands of this territory has been added, it shows the Luengoni beach on Lifou island...
The Special Exhibition cancellation was affixed making a quite nice document I think :-)
A Special mention also for the 2 nice representatives of the Wallis and Futuna Post Office !

I took advantage of the presence of other postal administrations to purchase some stamps. An other special mention to the Cyprus Post for the many gifts (stamps...) as the FDC of 2004 above with two stamps showing a hare. These stamps are part of a set devoted to mammals of Cyprus. A Dolphin and a Fox complete this series.
Note the word "Complimentary" on this cover...

Another gift above with this pretty FDC of 2001 with the four stamps of the set representing crab species living on the island.

Finally, two pre-paid ("Akypo") postcards have also been offered as the one above issued by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation a few years ago...
The stamp on the right (with no face value...) represents one of the beautiful mosaics of Dyonisos found in the Aion House in Pafos on the west coast of the country.

The last postcard issued in 1997 above commemorates the 50 years of the national airline, Cyprus Airways. The 25c stamp reproduces the airline's logo. On the 2 cards appears a 1c stamp entitled "Refugee Fund". This stamp, reissued regularly, has to be affixed in complement on all the letters and postcards mailed from the island in order to finance this fund for the Greek refugees who fled the north after the Turkish invasion in 1974. This process is quite unique in the world, isn't it ?
I also bought many beautiful engraved stamps on the stand of the Slovak Post but no gift was unfortunately offered to me :-(

Mon Salon du Timbre 2008

My "Salon du Timbre 2008"

It was my first visit to the "Salon du Timbre" in Paris, on last thursday, June 19 afternoon !
I've to confess that it was not really restful...Thank you to the children for the sound and thank you to the French "La Poste" for the picture :-)
And what a contrast between the crowded stands selling the "First Day" stamps and the out-of-the-way stands of merchants, the FFAP (French Federation of Philatelic Associations) or the CNEP (Chamber of Philately Merchants and Experts), the location of their respective stands didn't really help them...
A nice success also for the special animations for schoolchildren (calligraphy, origami...) even if I still can not see the link with our world of the philately ??

Who says French Stamp Exhibition, says issue of special ATM :-) And no less than three this time ! They appear on the cover above with their three respective cancellations (with the current French Economic rate €0.50).
At the bottom left, I added 3 of the 13 new "Marianne and Europe" with the corresponding FDC cancellation of June 17, 2008. I've read many criticisms about this new Marianne (by the engraver Beaujard), I must say that I find it rather successful !
Maybe some of you will receive soon a letter like this one :-))

These three ATM were printed in four colors by the French printing house in Périgueux.
I love the one devoted to circus, full of colors, and also the bottom one commemorating the 81st FFAP Congress with a nice view of the Grand Palais in Paris. Note that a pretty engraving stamp was also issued during the fair to announce this Congress.
I was disappointed by the third one in the upper right, representing different monuments of Paris, not very sharp...
For the ATM enthusiasts, above the 6 installed machines (two for each ATM) with at the background left the cancellations stand.

Above close-up view of the two machines (payment only with coins) issuing the ATM showing the monuments of Paris (Notre-Dame cathedral, Sacred Heart, fountain of Innocents). The ATM were at hand in the bottom left, as shown on the machine on the left above. The price printed on the ATM had to be free (from €0.50) or to be selected according to weight and destination.

Above the central stand of the French Post where were available a (excessive ?) list of stamps issued during the 9 days of this Fair. Some interesting issues with the little sheet featuring the new "Mariannes", the "Salon du Timbre 2008" sheet (I'll speak about further), the 6 special sheets about the France-Canada joint issue (I thought to you Garnet !!).

Above a special tribute to the friendly and very courageous "cancellers" (12 different cancellations !). I specify that this photo was of course taken after their permission :-)
I imagine the state of their arms at the end of the Show !

Above one of the 18 Postal Stationery directly printed during this Stamp Fair.
9 included the new red permanent Marianne (see above) and 9 the Van Gogh stamp ("Miss Gachet in her Garden", 1890) (see below), whith the words "France Lettre Prioritaire". This stamp was part of the booklet of 10 self-adhesive stamps issued in 2006, representing works by Impressionist painters.

These Postal Stationery were available with various illustrations : logo of the Show (with six colors : green, blue, orange, pink, yellow and purple) and poster of the Show (3 different around the "Stamp Planet" theme, as the desert above). To mark this event, I did apply the special Phil@poste cancellation, dated June 19, available throughout the Exhibition :-)

These 18 Postal Stationery were printed directly on site thanks to the Meteor DP60 machine, the new digital color printing press of the MGI company. I've to confess that the result is quite impressive !
Above a view of this machine. The Postal Stationery being available on a treadmill on the left side of the machine (see below).

Please note that these Postal Stationery should be available only during this fair (according to the charming hostess we couldn't miss because located directly on the right at the entrance !)...
However, in the last French Philatelic "Philinfo" (July-August issue) I received yesterday, these Postal Stationery can be purchased by 5 at a price of €4.20 !
Who is lying ? The two same Marianne and Van Gogh stamps are proposed. In this offer, 3 Postal Stationery include the 3 posters of the Show and 2 other the logo (in green and blue). Are these Postal Stationery different from those sold during the Exhibition ? Wait and see...

Finally, a special souvenir sheet was available during this 2008 Salon du Timbre, as it was already the case during the 2004 and 2006 Stamp Fairs. This sheet was composed with the four stamps "Gardens of Lyon" issued in 2007 and "Gardens of Marseille" issued in 2008.
These sheets have a particularity, they include several gilded elements, applied thanks to the "Heidelberg" machine above. This machine of other times is specialized in hot gilding that newer machines can no longer technically perform !!

On this close-up view above, we see the "virgin" sheet on the left and the same sheet with its golden elements on the right (the various elements, insects, are excerpts from a golden paper roll which parts are shown above).
This paper doesn't contain a single gram of gold, it's a bit like a golden paper for gifts...
Congratulations to the technician from the French Printing house who was operating this machine and who answered to my many questions with great passion and professionalism !
Other news from this Exhibition in an upcoming post :-)

EURO 2008 et photographie en Pologne

EURO 2008 and Photography in Poland

Rideau !
Merci beaucoup Kazimierz :-)
This is the end ! We go home...
I of course refer to the French Football team eliminated last night from Euro 2008 after its 2-0 defeat against Italy :-(
It's true that in view of the playing level of the "Bleus" during the 3 pool matches, we didn't frankly deserve to qualify for the quarter-finals...
We'll console each other with our Polish friends, also eliminated. The Polish Post had however issued a pretty colorful stamp to celebrate this Football Championship ("piłka nożna" means "Football" in Polish).
It's this stamp that appears on the nice FDC cover below. Thank you very much Kazimierz :-)

This stamp (PLN 1.35), issued on May 30, 2008, shows a funny and very colourful illustration around the word "Gooool !" shouted by journalists when a goal is scored :-)
Anna Niemierko, the artist, has also included the Swiss and Austrian flags (the two host countries) and stylized mountains also present on the official logo of this EURO. It's the Polish flag which is included in the illustration on the left on the cover. Very nice !
It was this year the first participation of Poland in a Euro, the team will make up in 2012 at home (the EURO will be organized jointly with Ukraine) !
To my knowledge, France has never issued a stamp to commemorate a Football European Championship, not even in 1984 when France hosted and won it...

Above the other side of this same letter with an additional postage (PLN 1.05).
The small stamp on the left is part of the funny set, issued on September 29, 2006, devoted to letters of the Polish alphabet. I've already earlier mentioned this series which associates each of the 26 letters with different illsutrated words. But which word illustrates this 'L' on the stamp above ?
The other PLN 0.05 stamp is part of the beautiful series (in progress) devoted to Polish cities. This one, issued on January 1, 2004, illustrates the city of Sandomierz (25.000 inhabitants), one of the oldest cities in Poland, located in south-east of the country on the Vistula River. The stamp shows on the right the Gothic Town Hall (14th century) and on the left the brick late Roman portal of St. Jacob church.

I've also already referred to this series of four stamps above, issued on February 29, 2008, devoted to the History of Polish Photography. The Polish Post has chosen to pay tribute to Karol Beyer (1818-1877), considered as the "father of Photography" in the country through four of his works taken from the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw.
The two photographs reproduced on the right, which I didn't speak about, show the Holy Cross Church in Warsaw (1858) and the Russian army at the Castle Square in Warsaw (1861).
These 4 stamps (PLN 1.35 each) have been issued in mini-sheets of 12 stamps. This is the top row from one of these sheets that appear on this beautiful letter mailed on June 14, 2008 from Nowy Sacz, thank you very much Andrzej :-)
