"100th anniversary of the March 1st Movement" stamp on FDCs from South Korea

In 1910, Korea was annexed by the Japanese empire, which installed a military administration characterized by an economic and cultural looting of the country, accompanied by increased repression.
After the end of the First World War, several movements for self-determination swept through many parts of the world.
Korea's strong desire for independence has been marked by a series of vigorous independence movements that have occurred not only in Korea but also in other parts of the world.
On March 1, 1919, a group of 33 independent activists read the Declaration of Independence in Tapgol Park in Seoul. Subsequently, mass demonstrations took place simultaneously in many parts of the country, including Seoul, Pyongyang, Jinnampo, Anju, Euiju, Sunchon, Wonsan ...

On February 28, 2019, the Korean Post issued a stamp (330 won) to mark the 100th anniversary of this March 1st Movement ("Samil Undong"), one of the first popular Korean protests against the Japanese occupation and one of the most important of the Korean independence movement (March 1st is now a holiday in South Korea).
That stamp, designed by Park, Eun-kyung, was printed in a sheet of 16 stamps with an illustrated top margin, half of which (with 2 stamps) is present on the First Day cover above, with Nambusan's cancellations (dated March 5, 2019). Thank you very much Ji-Ho!
That stamp, as well as the top margin, reproduces a work (dating from 1986) by the painter and calligrapher Suh Se-ok (born in 1929) devoted to the demonstrations during this day of March 1, 1919 in the Tapgol Park (with its central pavilion in the background).

The First Day postmark seems to represent Yu Gwan-sun (1902-1920), a Korean high schooler who became a figure in these resistance movements from 1919, arrested and died in prison at the age of 17, following bad treatment.
The official logo of this 100th anniversary is present on the stamp as well as in this top margin, the second half of which being present on the 2nd FDC above (also including 2 stamps).
This margin represents the Declaration of Independence read and proclaimed this March 1, 1919 (South Korea will be definitively independent in 1948 after the partition of the Korean peninsula).
Following these demonstrations, the Japanese repression caused 7000 deaths and 40 000 arrests ...

This Red Book indicates that 15% of mammal species and 10% of bird species in Kyrgyzstan are endangered, representing about 92 species of threatened animals (insects, fish, reptiles, birds and mammals) but also 65 types of plants.

A big thank you to the staff of KEP for sending this official FDC above (print run: 400) with cancellations from Bishkek, about this series designed by Vladimir Melnic!
A fifth species included in this Red Book, the Asian Red Deer or Maral (Cervus elaphus asiaticus), is shown on the left on this envelope.
These 4 stamps (print run: 8000 each) represent the whole animal in its environment with a detail of the head on the left.
The marbled polecat is a species, considered vulnerable by IUCN because of the destruction of its habitat, which frequents the semi-desert to desert areas and the steppes of central Eurasia.
The Pallas's cat or manul lives in the cold and arid steppes of Central Asia, once hunted for its fur and now protected by law in Kyrgyzstan.

The Turkestan lynx, a subspecies of the Eurasian lynx, is endemic to Central Asia and considered vulnerable by IUCN.
The Himalayan brown bear, living in the region of the Himalayas, is known to have probably inspired the legend of the Yeti.
KEP has put into circulation the 4 maxicards above (print run: 300 each) for the 4 stamps of this series, reproducing the original drawings by Vladimir Melnic that inspired this series.

The beautiful souvenir sheet below (print run: 2000) including the 4 stamps of this series, was also put into circulation.

170 years of the first French postage stamp - FDC from Paris dated March 14, 2019

170 years ago (on January 1, 1849), the first series of French postage stamps was issued (3 values : 20 centimes black, 40 centimes orange and 1 franc red vermilion), representing the Roman god Cérès, designed and engraved by Jacques-Jean Barre (1793-1855), engraver at the Monnaie de Paris.
On the occasion of the "Salon Philatélique de Printemps", held in Paris from March 14th to 16th, 2019, the French Post has put into circulation a special imperforated souvenir sheet (20 stamps) to commemorate 170 years of this first French postage stamp.
The 20 stamps of this souvenir sheet (nominal value: €0.88) are inspired by the "20 centimes black" intended for the franking of letters of less than 7.5 grams (from post office to post office) at the time (stamp removed from sale on October 29, 1850).

One of the stamps extracted from this souvenir sheet (print run: 90,000, selling price: €17.60) is present on the special cover above, with its First Day cancellation (design: Valérie Besser) from Paris on March 14, 2019. Thank you very much Jean-Claude!
This souvenir sheet has been printed using typography technique as it was the case for this stamp of 1849, printed at the time in sheet of 150 stamps.
During this Stamp exhibition in Paris, the French Post also offered the public a reissue of this sheet of 150 stamps (nominal value: €0.20), printed only in 6,000 copies (selling price: €55).

A view of this elegant souvenir sheet issued on March 14, 2019 above, with in box 13, a "head-to-tail" (or "tête-bêche") version of this stamp.
Contrary to the "head-to-tail" stamp in box 93 on the sheet of 150 stamps, this stamp is not really "head-to-tail" since only the central part (with Ceres profile) is reversed.
The potential print run of "head-to-tail" pairs for this first stamp issued in 1849 is estimated at 200,000 copies (the oldest "head-to-tail" used on letter is dated January 13, 1849).
Compared to the stamp of 1849, the mentions "REPUB FRANC" and "POSTES" were replaced by "FRANCE" and "LA POSTE 2019" on this new stamp.

"Skanderbeg on European engravings" m/s on cover from Albania

As part of the commemoration of the 550th anniversary of the death of Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg (1405-1468), national hero of the Albanian community, the Albanian Post issued on November 6, 2018 a series of two stamps devoted to this character through old European engravings.
These two stamps (150 lekë, print run: 135,000 - 250 lekë, print run: 105,000), designed by Laert Kraja, were each printed in a sheet of 24 stamps as well as in the numbered souvenir sheet (unknown print run) used on this beautiful letter sent by registered mail on February 21, 2019 from Tirana, the capital. Thank you very much Sabri!
As a reminder, Skanderbeg (Skënderbeu in Albanian) was a nobleman considered a national hero for his resistance to the Ottoman Empire (his famous helmet with a goat's head is included on the coat of arms of Albania, over the two-headed eagle).

The stamp on the left (150 lekë) represents a portrait of Skanderbeg engraved in 1602 by Dominicus Custos (1560-1612), a Flemish painter, printer and engraver who worked in the service of Emperor Rudolph II in Prague.
Skanderbeg is represented in an elliptical frame including the words "George Castriot Skanderbeg - Prince of Epirus and Albania".
The other stamp (250 lekë) reproduces an engraving (by Georgio Bartholdo Pontano) being part of a book published in 1609 entitled "Scanderbegus hoc est vita et res strenue feliciterque gestae, Georgii Castrioti, Epiri regis, ob magna facta Scanderbegi dicti, contra Turcarum immanitatem et perfidiam" in Latin.
Skanderbeg is featured with a sword in his right hand, symbol of his power and his victorious battles, and with his famous helmet in the bottom right.

"Mărţişor - International Music Festival 2019" stamp on FDC from Moldova

The arrival of spring in Moldova (but also in Romania or Bulgaria) marks a time of celebration in the country, coupled with the idea of revival, this season symbolizing rebirth, purity, hope and a new beginning in life.
In Moldova, we celebrate Mărţişor at dawn on March 1, when inhabitants welcome the arrival of spring and offer each other mărţişoare as gifts to bring happiness and good luck.
On March 1, 2019, the Post of Moldova released a new stamp devoted to this tradition of Mărţişor - symbol of Spring ("Mărţişor - simbol al primăverii") and in particular to the International Music Festival Mărţişor ("Festivalul Internațional de Muzică Mărțișor") organized for the occasion.
Thank you very much Nicolae for this beautiful official FDC (print run : 250) with postmarks from Chișinău (MD-2012), regarding this stamp!

That stamp (5.75 L, print run: 100,000), designed by Vitaliu Pogolşa, was printed in a sheetlet of 6 stamps + 2 vignettes.
In Moldova, Mărţişor ("March") is worn attached to the breast throughout the month of March and is then hung on a flowering tree, hoping that all the year will be flowery.
Mărţişor is a thin strap made of two braided yarns, one being white (spring) and the other red (winter), to which one can attach a small figurine made of fabric, wood or metal (a heart, a letter, a flower, a horseshoe...) playing the role of lucky charm.
A Mărţişor consisting of G-clefs is shown on the illustration on the left on this envelope, another Mărţişor, consisting of two hearts, appearing on the stamp and the postmark.
(Infinite!) red and white piano keys are also featured on the stamp, evoking this International Music Festival Mărţişor whose 53rd edition took place in Chişinău (National Palace Nicolae Sulac) and in the rest of Moldova (including Transnistria) from 1 to 10 March 2019.

Nearly 50 musical performances were presented to the public during the 10 days of this festival, mainly Moldovan but also with artists from about fifteen countries.
Nicolae completed his postage, to reach the current rate for a priority shipment up to 20g to France (11 L currently) with another stamp on the back of this envelope above.
That stamp (5.75 L) is part of the series (2 stamps) issued on March 1, 2016, about this same Spring Festival Mărţişor.

Nicolae was finally kind enough to send me the nice maxicard above designed from the postcard (number 8/2019, print run: 2,400, design: Lilian Iaţco) including this "Mărţişor 2019" stamp.
The two vignettes of the sheetlet in which this stamp was printed, are present on the other side of this card below, with First Day cancellation and the Mărţişor that I was also lucky to receive in this envelope!

Cute cat and lucky pig (soft paper) on cover from Switzerland

I must admit that I did not know that the pig was a symbol of luck in the German-speaking countries mainly, including Switzerland ...
In Germany, Austria or Switzerland, it is still customary to enter the New Year by munching on a marzipan pig, called "Glücksschwein" ("lucky pig").
The predominant role of the pig originated in the Germanic tribes that inhabited Central Europe and Scandinavia during Antiquity, the latter considering the wild boar as a sacred animal, guarantor of strength and fertility.
The domestic pig then maintained a central position by being economical, providing a considerable amount of meat and breeding rapidly.

In the German language, this popular belief has influenced the terminology commonly used today: when a person is lucky, they use the expression "Schwein haben", which literally means "to have pig"!
On March 7, 2019, the Swiss Post put into circulation a very special self-adhesive stamp (1 CHF, design: Janine Wiget), printed by Joh. Enschedé on a fluffy paper, having the shape of a little pig, smiling and with a 4-leaf clover in the mouth.
That stamp is present on the right on the pretty letter above sent the first day of issue from Geneva (post office "Filiale 1200 Genève 21 Les Pâquis"). Thank you very much Jürgen!
The other stamp (1 CHF), too cute, is part of a series of 4 stamps (dog, cat, rabbit, horse) issued the same day, devoted to our four-legged friends, a cat here.
Designed by Christian Kitzmüller, this series shows close-up animals faces, as if they were sitting in a photo booth and were suddenly surprised by the click of the camera...

90th anniversary of the Trutnov Philatelic Club - special postmark on cover from Czech Republic

Merci beaucoup Slavek !
On February 22, 2019 (from 8 am to 4 pm), a temporary post office was set up in the Podkrkonoší Museum (referring to this region of Bohemia at the southern foot of the Krkonoše Mountains) in the northern town of Trutnov, near the Polish border.
This office provided visitors with a special postmark (design: Paulina Skavová) dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the creation of the Trutnov Philatelic Club ("Klub filatelistů Trutnov").
This cancellation was applied on this very nice letter below, franked with a stamp (19 CZK), issued on March 2, 2005, part of the definitive series "flowers" in progress (started in 2002, design: Anna Khunová), a fuchsia flower here. Thank you very much Slavek!

This postmark is featuring Permoník, the name of a demon living and keeping mines in Czech and Slovak folklore.
The character shown here (with his shield and mention "90") is inspired by one of the sculptures at the foot of the Krakonoš fountain in the center of the square of the same name in Trutnov.
Krakonoš (or Rübezahl) is a fantastic being or a giant from the Giant Mountains region, who can take different appearances (monk, miner, wild hunter or tree stump).

Tribute to environmentalist Hannelore 'Loki' Schmidt on FDC from Germany

After a stamp dedicated to the 5th Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Helmut Schmidt (1918-2015) issued on December 18, 2018, the Deutsche Post has put into circulation, on March 1, 2019, a stamp dedicated to his wife, Hannelore ' Loki 'Schmidt (1919-2010), on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of her birth.
That stamp (€ 0.45, postal rate for a domestic postcard), designed by Andreas Ahrens and printed in sheetlet of 10 stamps, is present in two copies on the FDC below, with cancellations from Berlin (D-10117). Thanks a lot Jens!
Born in modest circumstances in Hamburg, Hannelore Schmidt developed a special passion for nature as a child, influenced by her working-class parents. Her desire to study biology has failed because of high tuition fees.

Throughout her life, Hannelore Schmidt acquired a wealth of knowledge in the fields of botany, biology, geology and nature conservation.
When her husband (they married in 1942), Helmut Schmidt, became Federal Chancellor in 1974, she devoted herself entirely to his interests and quickly became the most famous environmental advocate in Germany, especially regarding the protection of native wild plants, through a foundation created in 1976 dedicated to nature conservation and environmental education.
Several recently discovered plant species as well as a species of scorpion have been named after her.
It should be noted that the Deutsche Post also issued a souvenir sheet on March 1, 2019, including that stamp, as well as the recent stamp dedicated to Helmut Schmidt.

EUROPA 2018 (Bridges) stamp set on cover from Greece

Happy to share with you this great registered letter, sent from Chania (Crete Island) on March 1, 2019, franked with the EUROPA 2018 series (2 se-tenant stamps) issued by the Greek Post. Thank you very much Spyros!
These two se-tenant stamps (€ 0.90 + € 3.40), issued on May 24, 2018, illustrate the theme of the "Bridges" chosen that year by the European postal organization PostEurop.
They were printed in the same sheet of 16 stamps (8 stamps of each), each in minisheet of 8 stamps and in a numbered booklet (print run: 8,000) composed of 2 pairs of stamps (with different perforations).

The Plaka Bridge (€ 3.40, print run: 552,000) and the Rio-Antirrio Bridge (€ 0.90, print run: 352,000) are in the spotlight on this beautiful series designed by Myrsini Vardopoulou.
Plaka Bridge, built in 1866 over the Arachthos River (north-west of the country), was the largest stone one-arch bridge in Greece and the Balkans and the third largest one-arch stone bridge in Europe. Its stone arch was 40 meters long and curved majestically on the river, 21 meters above the water.
Built upon the orders of the Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz, after two unsuccessful attempts by other builders (in 1860 and 1863), this bridge, which survived the German bombing during World War II, was destroyed following a flash flood in February 2015.
Rio-Antirrio Bridge (2,883 meters long) is a cable-stayed bridge that connects the Peloponnese to mainland Greece between the two cities of Rio and Antirrio, via the A5 motorway.
Inaugurated in 2004, this bridge is today the 3rd bridge with the longest cable-stayed deck in the world.
This bridge was in particular designed to withstand an earthquake of magnitude 7, connecting two tectonic plates in movement.

Tribute to artist / photographer Valérie Belin on FDC from France

On February 25, 2019, the French Post has put into circulation, as part of its series about contemporary artists, a new stamp (€ 2.10, print run: 600,000) dedicated to the visual artist and photographer Valérie Belin (born in 1964 ), living and working in Paris.
Valérie Belin studied fine arts in Versailles and Bourges between 1983 and 1988 when she obtained the French higher national diploma in visual expression. She also holds a diploma in advanced studies (DEA) in the philosophy of art.
Initially influenced by various minimalist and conceptual tendencies, Valérie Belin became interested in the photographic medium in its own right; this is at once the subject of her work and her way of reflecting and creating.
Light, matter and the "body" of things and beings in general, as well as their transformations and representations, constitute the terrain of her experiments and the world of her artistic ideas.

The works of Valérie Belin, sometimes referred to as the "thousand-faced photographer", is articulated in photographic series, each one produced within the framework of a specific project.
Her works have been exhibited around the world and are held in numerous public and private collections.
Winner of the Prix Pictet (awarded each year to reward a photographer for a work on the theme of sustainable development) in 2015, she was made an officer of France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2017.
A characteristic work by Valérie Belin, "Calendula (Marigold) - Black-Eyed Susan exhibition in 2010", is reproduced on this nice stamp, present on the illustrated First Day cover above, with cancellations from Paris of February 22, 2019. Thank you very much Joël!
To note on this envelope the signature of Valérie Belin, who were present at the Carré d'Encre in Paris during the preview sale of her stamp!
Through this work, Valérie Belin does not use photography to show reality but rather to confuse it and wonder about beauty ...
A part of another photograph, "Astrantia Major (Ruby Wedding), 2013" is reproduced on the illustration to the left on this envelope.

"Dongsha Atoll National Park" stamp set on FDC from Taiwan

On October 4, 2007, the Dongsha Atoll National Park became the 7th National Park and the 1st National Marine Park of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

It includes the Dongsha Atoll, a circular atoll 25 km in diameter and a part of the surrounding seas (total area of 3,537 square kilometers).
Also claimed by the People's Republic of China (like many other islands in this region), this atoll has a rich marine biodiversity (fish, jellyfish, squid, sharks, rays, sea turtles, dugongs, cetaceans) and is currently not open to public tourism.
On February 21, 2019 (year 108 locally), Taiwan's Chunghwa Post put into circulation a beautiful series (4 stamps) devoted to this Dongsha Atoll National Park.

Dongsha Coral Reef (NT $ 13) is an ecosystem with a diverse marine life such as this Yellowhead Damselfish (Pomacentrus aurifrons) shown at the bottom left of this stamp.
The last stamp (NT $ 15) is devoted to the seagrass beds covering the lagoons of Dongsha Island and shallow seas around the atoll, providing excellent habitat for many species, where they can both find food and hide themselves, such as the Spotted eagle ray (Aetobatus narinari) present on this stamp.

Tribute to physician Rudolf Tomáš Jedlička on FDC from Czech Republic

On February 14, 2019, the Czech Post issued a new stamp (19 CZK) devoted to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the physician, surgeon, radiologist and initiator of many social institutions Rudolf Tomáš Jedlička (1869-1926).
That stamp, designed by Jan Kavan and engraved by Bohumil Šneider, is present on the official FDC below (print run: 3,200), with postmarks (crutch and wheelchair) from Lysá nad Labem, his hometown. Thank you very much Bret!
The illustration on the envelope refers to an X-ray scanner that Rudolf Tomáš Jedlička was the first to use in the country.
Jedlička is actually considered as the Czech founder of X-ray imaging, radiology and therapeutic rehabilitation.

Jedlička encouraged the use of X-ray imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Only a few months after the famous discovery of X-rays, he was the first doctor in Czechoslovakia to use these rays for diagnosis before surgery.
A graduate of the Prague Medical School in 1892, he became an assistant physician at Professor Maydl's surgical clinic in Prague in 1895. In 1901, Jedlička graduated in surgical pathology and therapy and was appointed chief medical officer of the clinic.
In 1914, Rudolf Tomáš Jedlička inaugurated the Prague sanatorium in the Podolí district (featured on the right on the stamp).
In 1913 he also founded the Institute for Disabled Children in Prague, named in his honor Jedlička Institute (depicted on the left on the stamp).
Jedlička died in Harrachov on October 26, 1926 as a result of X-ray exposure.

"Fête du Timbre 2019" in France: when stamp displays its elegance!

After 4 years (from 2014 to 2017) dedicated to dance, a new cycle of 4 years for the "Fête du Timbre" or "Stamp Day" started this year, with the theme of the automobile (vintage cars, motorsport), elegant cars ("voitures de style") this year.
To note that this Stamp Day 2019, organized on 9 and 10 March 2019 in 87 cities (103 cities last year ...) of France, located in 75 different departments (82 last year ...), coincided with the 100th anniversary of the first car model designed by André Citroën, the torpédo 10 HP Citroën type A.
This philatelic event, which takes place every year since 1938 at the initiative of the FFAP ("French Federation of Philatelic Associations"), was called "Journée du Timbre" ("Stamp Day") until 1999. The issue of a specific stamp devoted to this Stamp Day only took place in 1944.

As in previous years, a stamp (€ 0.88) and a souvenir sheet (€ 1.76) were put into circulation this year, designed by illustrator Serge Jamois, specializing in aeronautics and automotive, "Official Painter of Air and Space" since 2000, from photographs by Renaud Le Blan who has made many photographs (in studio or outside) for Citroën, Peugeot, Renault Trucks, Jeep & Dassault Aviation ...
The souvenir sheet and the stamp are present on the First Day cover above, with postmarks from Lyon (69), designed by Marion Favreau.
The stamp (print run: 900,000) represents this first model Citroën Type A 10 HP, the first European car in mass production chain, marketed by Citroën between June 1919 and July 1921 (almost 25,000 vehicles produced).

The souvenir sheet above (print run: 500,000) is devoted to one of the most famous Citroën vehicles in France, the Traction Avant (11B convertible model here?).
Produced by the Citroën manufacturer from 1934 to 1957 (760,000 cars produced), its history is linked in the collective memory to the Occupation during the Second World War, as a car of the Gestapo and as an icon of the Resistance movement.
With its front wheels, this car became the reference in terms of handling, performance and comfort until 1955 and the arrival of the DS model.
In the 87 towns concerned by this "Fête du Timbre", the local philatelic clubs and organizers were offering the public, in collaboration with the FFAP, some philatelic souvenirs (2 envelopes and a postcard, designed by the illustrator Alain Bouldouyre).
For example, these two envelopes above and below, with cancellations from Lyon.

To note this First Day cancellation with the mentions "Les voitures de style" and "Origins - since 1919" (in French and English) as well as the two chevrons of the famous emblem of Citroën.
On the occasion of the centenary of the first Citroën vehicle, the French manufacturer has created a site of the same name "Citroën Origins" with a focus on some of the legendary vehicles of the brand, including the sounds of certain parts of cars (doors, engine , horn ...), I love it!

As it was the case in previous years, for a minimum of €8.00 purchased, the postal stationery above ("Green Letter" postal rate, limited print run) was offered for free, with the pre-printed "Citroën Type A 10 HP" stamp, and postmark from Lyon here.
The front of this postal stationary (below) reproduces the original drawing of this stamp "Citroën Type A 10 HP", with the mention "The stamp displays its elegance" in French.
