"Charity around Taiwan" m/s on cover from Yungho (Taipei)

On the occasion of the philatelic exhibition PHILATAIPEI 2016 (World Stamp Championship Exhibition) held in Taipei from 21 to 26 October 2016, the Chunghwa Post has put into circulation several series of stamps devoted to the different thematic days.
For example, this very nice souvenir sheet (2 stamps) issued on October 22, 2016 to celebrate the "Charity Day" with the theme "Charity around Taiwan" through loving hearts...
Thank you very much George for this nice letter sent on January 10, 2017 from Yungho (a district of Taipei), franked with this souvenir sheet.

To note the stamp on the left (NT $ 17), heart-shaped, including a bird in flight composed of small loving hearts. This bird, with a four-leaf clover in the beak, is a symbol of good fortune and spreads love and joy all over the world...
The other stamp (NT $ 25) is an allegory of the concept of charity with this character seeming to sow small hearts, forming themselves a bigger heart.
The background of this souvenir sheet is of course in pink color... there is a risk of heart overload ;)

Malaysian Serama (Chicken bantam breed) - FDC from Malaysia

To celebrate the New Year of the (Fire) Rooster, started on January 28, 2017, the Malaysian Post has released, on January 10, 2017, a series consisting of 3 stamps + 2 miniature sheets devoted to the theme of Malaysian Serama ("Ayam Serama" in Malay), considered to be the smallest breed of domestic hen in the world.
A big thank you Khor for these two official FDCs, with cancellations from Ipoh (Perak), regarding respectively the 3 stamps and the miniature sheet !

This bantam variety of poultry (Gallus gallus domesticus), weighing between 350 and 500g, appeared in the 1970s in the state of Kelantan, by cross-breeding wild fowl with bantam breeds from Japan or Malaysia.
This breed is characterized by a muscular body and a protruding chest, almost vertical wings and a beautiful vertical plumage at the tail.
Many competitions are organized throughout Malaysia to designate the most beautiful specimens of Malaysian Serama, generally divided into 8 categories, 6 of which are featured on the 3 stamps above : Serama A (adult male below 350g), Serama Remaja (adolescent male), Serama B (adult male between 350g and 500g), Serama Induk (female), Serama Muda (young male) and Serama Tanpa Lawi (adult male without tail sickle feathers).

One of the two miniature sheets in this series above (RM 3) was designed in a very different style, from a Chinese painting (author : Dr. Wong Kum Peng).
It's worth noting the octagonal shape of both the sheet and the stamp.
The Chinese characters on that stamp can be translated as : "The golden rooster calls, to announce the dawn and celebration of a glorious new day".

25 years of diplomatic relations with UK - special postmark in Moldova

After a postmark put into circulation in 2016 (relations with Romania) and a previous one on January 16, 2017 (relations with Hungary), a third postmark was issued by the Post of Moldova on January 17, 2017 on the same topic, this time devoted to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Moldova and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Designed by Lilian Iaţco, this postmarks depicts the Orthodox Cathedral of the Nativity in Chişinău next to the Westminster Abbey in London where almost all British monarchs have been crowned since the 11th century.

This cancellation was officially unveiled on January 17, 2017 at the Post of Moldova's headquarters in Chişinău (MD-2012) in the presence of the UK Ambassador to Moldova and the Moldova's Deputy Foreign Minister.
On this occasion, a special envelope (design : Lilian Iaţco, print run : 5,000) was also put on sale, as well as a personalized (L 1.20) stamp (2009 model, printed in sheet of 24 stamps) representing the two same monuments (without the bell tower for the Cathedral of Chişinău).
Thank you very much Nicolae for this envelope above including both this postmark and personalized stamp !
The left side shows the Moldovan flag as well as 25 flags of European countries (of which 12 will be the subject of a similar cancellation), which recognized the independence of Moldova in 1992.
To note also this map of Europe to the right on this envelope, without Kosovo (probably because Moldova has not recognized its independence)...

It seems that a second envelope of the same type was issued, certainly to include the flags of the countries of Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey) and the rest of the world (China, South Korea, USA, Japan, Israel) which will also be concerned this year with the issue of a postmark devoted to the 25th anniversary of these diplomatic relations.
The other 3 stamps on the right (values in rubles) used on the other side of this envelope above are part of the first definitive series (5 stamps) issued on May 24, 1992, depicting the country's coat of arms.
The 4th stamp on the left (5 rubles), issued on August 8, 1992, features the statue of the Capitoline Wolf, the symbol associated with the legend of Romulus and Remus and the foundation of Rome, located in front of the National History Museum of Chişinău since 1990.
As a reminder, these stamps with ruble values were withdrawn from circulation on October 1, 1994. A transitional currency, the Moldovan cupon, was used between August 2 and November 29, 1993, when it was replaced by the Moldovan Leu (1 Leu = 1000 cupons).

A big thank you Terence for this interesting postcard sent on December 4, 2016 from Ruwi, one of the main business districts of Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman !

Happy New Year of the Rooster - FDC from Hong Kong

Today 28 January 2017, the year of Fire Monkey is giving way to the year of Fire Rooster according to the Chinese lunar calendar.
Many postal administrations are issuing stamps about this topic each year, such as the Hong Kong Post with the 6th part of its 4th series devoted to the Lunar New Year, issued on January 7, 2017 and composed of 4 stamps depicting roosters in various artistic forms.
Designed by KAN Tai-keung, these 4 stamps were printed by Joh. Enschedé B.V. in sheet of 25 stamps each.

One of the 4 stamps of this series ($ 3.70) was used on the card above with its associated FDC cancellation. Thank you very much Ellis !
That stamp shows a rooster made from seashells, with peach flowers in the background, symbols of perfect love and marriage, longevity and a peaceful life.

In that same series, a souvenir sheet ($ 10) was also put into circulation, representing a rooster and embroidered peony flowers, announcing a joyful year.

"Sustainable mobility" stamp set on FDC from Brazil

On September 22, 2016, the Brazilian Post (Correios) issued two se-tenant stamps (R$ 1.70, print run : 240,000 each) devoted to the theme of sustainable mobility ("mobilidade sustentável" in Portuguese), with a focus on urban scenes where means of transport and different mobility options are in line with the requirements of comfort, safety and durability.
These two stamps (design : Adriana Shibata), in two copies each, appear on the FDC below with cancellations from Brasilia.
Thank you very much Marcelo for this nice cover sent on December 12, 2016 from São Paulo !

The first stamp represents a VLT ("Veículo leve sobre trilhos" or "light rail"), a form of urban public transport with less capacity and speed than a train or subway but a higher capacity and speed than a tram.
Other means of locomotion (skateboard on a dedicated runway, bus) as well as a disabled person in wheelchair, are also present on that stamp.
The other stamp is devoted to the pacified coexistence between pedestrians on the one hand and a bicycle and a car on the other hand, stopped at a crosswalk, with a metro station in the background.
A visually impaired person is also featured on that stamp, walking with a cane following a dedicated track.

Gold medalists at the Rio 2016 Paralympics on stamp and FDC from Malaysia

This seems to be a new trend... more and more postal administrations have dedicated stamps in 2016 to medalists at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
Is it to compensate for the absence of medals won at the Olympic Games (for example in Latvia), on principle of equality (as in Slovenia, Belarus or Kazakhstan) or did these postal administrations smell a new lucrative market ?
Let's just consider that these stamps allow to highlight these Paralympic athletes who have as much (if not more) merit than Olympic athletes !

In Rio 2016, Malaysia won the first 3 gold medals in its history (Olympic and Paralympic Games combined), it was no doubt worth the issue of a special stamp "Paralympics Golden Moments in Rio 2016" devoted to these 3 athletes !
It was done on December 20, 2016 with that stamp (95 sen) appearing on the official FDC above, with cancellation from Ipoh representing a Malaysian tiger, the mascot of the national team during these Rio 2016 games. Thank you very much Khor !
The same mascot is featured in the upper margin of the sheet (15 stamps), a part of which appearing above on the right, in which that stamp was printed.

Two different "PF 2017" postmarks on covers from Czech Republic

From December 27, 2016 to January 2, 2017, the post office (012) of Prague Castle put into circulation a special postmark devoted to the new year, including as usual the mention "PF 2017".
As a reminder, PF refers to the words "Pour Féliciter" ("To congratulate"), from the French language, but only still used today in that country and Slovakia. This mention is only used in written language and can mean either "Happy New Year" and "Best Wishes".

This postmark was applied on December 31, 2016 on the nice letter above, franked with one of the two stamps of the series "UNESCO World Heritage" issued on September 7, 2016, the historic center of Prague here. Thank you very much Slavek !
St. Vitus Cathedral, featured on that stamp, is part of the Prague Castle and the rooster on the postmark is located at one end of this religious edifice.

Another special "PF 2017" cancellation, designed by Jan Kavan, was put into circulation from 1 to 31 December 2016 by the main post office of Prague 1.
This postmark was applied on December 30, 2016 on the 2nd letter above, franked with the Christmas stamp, issued on November 5, 2014, representing a work by Czech illustrator and writer Josef Lada (1887-1957) showing a scene of the Nativity, entitled "Bethlehem in Winter" (National Gallery of Prague), dating from 1942.

"Months in folk tradition" minisheet on FDC from Moldova

The Post of Moldova ("Poşta Moldovei") devoted its first stamp issue of the year 2017 to folk traditions, accompanying in particular the first 3 months of the year (January, February, March).
A very nice minisheet composed of 3 stamps (L 5.75 each) + 1 coupon (print run : 64,200 sheets), designed by Lilian Iaţco, was thus put into circulation on January 5, 2017.
Thank you very much Nicolae for this beautiful official FDC (print run : 400) with cancellations from Chişinău (MD-2012), regarding this minisheet !
In the popular Moldovan (and Romanian) tradition, months are the "12 sons of the year" or the old branches of a tree, often associated with meteorological observations and their repercussions on the lives of the inhabitants in rural areas.

Thus, the month of January ("Gerar" or "Calindariu") marking the beginning of the year, announces the weather in the coming period : if the month of January is cold, it will snow in February and if not, a beautiful and mild weather is announced in March and April.
The month of February (Făurar" or "Luna Lupilor") is considered as a cruel month announcing great frosts and snow storms (2 weeks when everything freezes and 2 weeks when the thaw begins).
This month is devoted to agricultural preparations which will begin the following month when the weather will be milder.
March ("Mărţişor" or "Mart") marks the arrival of spring, a period of celebration in the country, associated with the idea of renewal, this season symbolizing rebirth, purity, hope, the beginning of new activities in life.
In Moldova, Mărţişor is celebrated at the dawn of March 1, when inhabitants welcome the arrival of spring and offer each other mărţişoare as gifts to bring happiness and good luck.
I do not know exactly what this young blonde woman is referring to on the coupon ?
I suppose this series will continue in the next years with the following three months, April ("Prier"), May ("Florar") and June ("Ciresar")...

Protection of nature and UNESCO World Heritage stamps on cover from Portugal

Si cela pouvait inspirer d'autres administrations postales...
Happy to share with you this new letter sent from Lisbon on December 16, 2016 by the Portuguese Post (CTT), franked with real stamps !
If it could inspire other postal administrations...
The stamp on the left (€ 0.68) is part of a series of 4 stamps, issued on September 30, 2011, devoted to the protection of the environment and in particular to the use of water and waste recycling.
That stamp is specifically devoted to the treatment of wastewater.

The second stamp (€ 0.72) is part of an interesting series (4 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) issued on June 30, 2014, dedicated to the Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications, on the list of UNESCO World Heritage since 2012.
According to UNESCO, "this site, extensively fortified from the 17th to 19th centuries, represents the largest bulwarked dry-ditch system in the world. Within its walls, the town contains barracks and other military buildings as well as churches and monasteries.... these fortifications began when Portugal regained independence in 1640. Designed by Dutch Jesuit padre Cosmander, they represent the best surviving example of the Dutch school of fortifications anywhere".
That stamp shows in particular an aerial view of the fort of Santa Luzia, built between 1641 and 1687.

Stamps of the 3rd part of the "Haunted Canada" set on cover from Toronto

After the first 2 parts (5 stamps each) issued in 2014 and 2015, the Canadian Post put into circulation on September 8, 2016, the third and final part of its series entitled "Haunted Canada", a "spine-tingling" series evoking various ghost stories recounted by Canadians in several parts of the country...
Three stamps from this series were used on the pretty cover below sent on December 11, 2016 from the first post office of the City of Toronto. Thank you very much Tristan !
The two postmarks refer to this first post office, built in 1833 when the city of Toronto did not yet exist (founded in 1834) and was called York.
These 5 stamps (domestic rate up to 30g, currently $ 0.85), issued in a booklet of 10 self-adhesive stamps (2 of each) as well as in a souvenir sheet (gummed version), have been printed with an holographic foil !

Some elements as well as the mention "Haunted Canada" (in French and English) are printed on each stamp (illustrations by Sam Weber) with this holographic foil.
The first stamp on the left evokes the Hag of Bell Island (Newfoundland and Labrador), a beautiful girl who frightens and lures her victims into a swamp before turning into a disgusting old witch.
The stamp in the center is about the story of the Phantom Bell Ringers of Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island), in reference to the day when the bell of the Kirk of St. James Church rang when there was no one in the neighborhood, with the exception of 4 women dressed in surreal white.
These bell ringers would have announced the tragic fate of 4 women who drowned that day during the sinking of the Fairy Queen in 1853...
The last stamp is devoted to the Lady in White of  Montmorency Falls (Quebec), the ghost of the future bride Mathilde Robin, who threw herself from the top of the fall to the announcement of the death of her fiancé during the battle of Montmorency in 1759.

Saint-Pierre & Miquelon : special cancellation of January 1, 2017 !

After a mechanical pictorial cancellation put into service on January 1, 2016, devoted to the bicentenary of the retrocession of Saint Pierre and Miquelon to France, a new mechanical cancellation of the same type (blue ink) was put into circulation on January 1, 2017.
This cancellation was applied on the prepaid envelope below, valid for a shipment up to 20g, domestic (currently € 0.43) and worldwide (€ 0.85 to France, € 1.17 to the USA and Canada, € 1.49 to the rest of the world). Thank you very much Joël !

This cancellation from the city of Saint-Pierre includes a map of the archipelago as well as a slogan evoking the heritage, history and philately of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.
This illustrated cover (sale price : € 2.00 in 2015, unknown print run) was put into circulation on August 14, 2015 (if I'm right) and evokes the île aux Marins ("The Island of the Sailors"), a small island of the archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, located a few hundred meters off the port of Saint-Pierre.
The visual of the preprinted stamp is the same as one of the two engraved stamps (nominal value of € 0.30 initially) of a series issued on May 29, 2002, showing a net mender at work.

A beautiful photograph (by Thierry Vogensthal) of this island in winter is depicted on the other side of this envelope above, with in particular the church Notre-Dame des Marins.
This small island had a high activity until the end of the 19th century thanks to cod fishing with a village having counted up to 600 inhabitants.
Uninhabited since 1963, the island experienced a revival of activity in the 1980s with the renovation of the old fishermen's houses and public buildings. Currently, the île aux Marins is only inhabited in good season (from May to September).

The card above (inside this prepaid cover) includes the same photograph as the one on the envelope, showing a wooden dwelling house ("Maison Morel") and its adjoining (saline) workshop, being restored by the local association "Safeguarding the Archipelago's Heritage".
This house, built in 1916, was classified as a historical monument in 2011.

A tribute on stamps to the 14th King of Malaysia, at the end of his mandate

Malaysia is a Federation composed of 13 states and three federal territories. It is also a constitutional monarchy whose head of state is a monarch, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong ("supreme ruler" in Malay), more commonly known as the King of Malaysia.
His particularity is to be one of the few elected monarchs (for a 5 years-term) in the world. He is elected among the nine hereditary sultans of the Malay States (the other 4 states, led by Governors, do not participate in this election...).
His role is mainly honorific, the executive power being held by the Prime Minister.

On December 13, 2011, the 27th Sultan of the state of Kedah, Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah (born in 1927) became the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
This King has two peculiarities : he is the only one to rule the country for the second time (he was the 5th Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 1970 to 1975) and was the oldest to accede to the throne (87 years).
In order to pay tribute to him on the occasion of the end of his mandate on December 12, 2016, the Malaysian Post issued a series of 3 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet.
These 3 stamps appear on the official FDC above, with cancellation "Dirgahayu tuanku" ("Long live the King") from the city of Ipoh (state of Perak). Thank you very much Khor !
These stamps illustrate several activities of the Malaysian monarch as religious leader (85 sen), military leader (95 sen) and leader of the nation (1.05 RM), with the royal palace (Istana Negara) in the background.
On December 13, 2016, the Sultan of Kelantan, Muhammad Faris Petra or Muhammad V (born in 1969) officially became the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the 4th youngest King to be elected and the first to come to power without a queen consort (he is divorced).
A series of stamps will be logically issued in his honor in 2017 on the occasion of his installation (date not specified).

Lithuania-Latvia-Estonia joint issue : 10 years of the Baltic Chain

Merci beaucoup !
Since January 1, 2015, euro is the official currency of Lithuania, replacing the litas (1 euro = 3.4528 litas).
After a two-year transition period in which litas-denominated stamps were authorized, only euro-denominated stamps are now accepted for postage from January 1, 2017.
Vera was kind enough to send me these 2 beautiful letters, franked with litas-denominated stamps, posted on December 23, 2016 from the town of Joniškis (north of the country, 14 km from the border with Latvia). Thank you very much !

Vera franked her above letter with the souvenir sheet (print run : 100,000) issued jointly with Latvia and Estonia on August 23, 1999 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Baltic Chain ("Baltijos kelias" in Lithuanian).
This Baltic Chain was a unique and peaceful demonstration, on August 23, 1989, which united the three countries in their drive for independence and freedom.
From 7 p.m. this August 23, 1989, following radio signals, between 2 and 2.5 million Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian citizens formed a human chain of nearly 650 km from Gediminas Castle in Vilnius to Hermann Tower in Tallinn.
These three stamps showing families at this event, with the flags of the 3 countries in the background, were each designed by artists from the 3 countries, V. Skabeikiene for Lithuania.
To note the mention "Freedom" in Lithuanian, Estonian and Latvian ("Laisvė - Vabadus - Brīvība") in the upper margin of this souvenir sheet.

Regarding this joint issue, each country also issued an isolated stamp, such as the one above on the right for Lithuania (1 litas, print run : 500,000).
The other stamp (2.15 litas, design : H. Ratkevicius, print run : 300,000) was issued on April 11, 2009 to celebrate the designation of Vilnius as the European Capital of Culture. That year, Linz (Austria) was the other European capital of culture.
That stamp depicts the monument dedicated to Gediminas (1275-1341), ruler of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania for 25 years, who moved the Lithuanian capital from Trakai to Vilnius.
The Gediminas' Tower is also featured in the background, the only remaining part of the Vilnius Castle built at the beginning of the 14th century.

"Metal crafts" minisheet on cover from India

Since the Indus Valley civilization (between 3300 and 1900 BC), Indian craftsmen mastered the design of metal crafts with other eras in history where this craft has gone through a golden age (Bronze statues dating from the Chola dynasty, Maurya Empire...).
Some of the current Indian cities or regions are still famous in the country or around the world for this type of craft : Kashmir for traditional households items, Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) for brass objects, Varanasi for sculptures of deities made of brass or copper, Palitana (Gujarat) for its bronze sculptures, Jaipur (Rajasthan) for its engraving and lacquering techniques on copper and brass as well as its bronze sculptures, Bundelkhand for its ornate metal boxes, Sarguja for its lamps, Raigarh for its animal figurines or rice measure bowls...

In collaboration with the National Museum of Delhi, the Indian Post put into circulation on August 26, 2016, an interesting set of 6 stamps (design : Brahm Prakash, print run: 200,000 each) devoted to various metal crafts, a cultural heritage in India.
These 6 stamps (from 5 Rp to 25 Rp) were also printed in a nice minisheet (print run : 100,000) including other metal objects in the side margins.
This minisheet was used on the pretty registered letter above sent from Kolkata, without any cancellation unfortunately. Thank you very much Alka !
The various objects featured here : a kind of iron vase "Surahi", a bronze Shiva-Natarāja sculpture (popular in southern India at the end of the Chola dynasty), a chiseled box with a top "Pandan", a bird-shaped incense burner made of brass, a finely engraved spouted "Lota" in silver and a gold lamp devoted to Gajalakshmi (a representation of the goddess Lakshmi sitting on a lotus flower, flanked on both side by an elephant).

Armenia / Nagorno-Karabakh joint stamp issue : city of Shushi

A big thank you Terence for this interesting postcard (Geghard Monastery) sent on December 8, 2016 from Yerevan, the capital of Armenia !
In addition to this large blue postmark (usual in this country), to note also on this card the FDC cancellations concerning respectively the visit of Pope Francis in Armenia (June 24, 2016) and the 25 years of independence (September 21, 2016 ).
The stamp (240 drams, design : David Dovlatyan, print run : 40,000) used here is a joint issue between the two postal administrations of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh Post), put into circulation on December 30, 2014.

I already wrote on this blog about the version of that joint stamp issued in Nagorno-Karabakh.
That stamp is dedicated to the city of Shushi, located in a mountainous region (at an altitude of 1,400–1,800 metres) of Nagorno-Karabakh, this self-proclaimed republic populated mostly by Armenians, an enclave in the territory of Azerbaijan.
That stamp shows an aerial view of this town of Shushi with in particular the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral, one of the largest churches of the Armenian world, in the center.
The town of Shushi is a symbol for the Armenian community because it was the site of one of the first victories of Armenian troops in May 1992 against the Azerbaijani army, during the Nagorno-Karabakh war that bruised this region between 1988 and 1994.

"Volleyball 1956-2016" pictorial cancellation in Czech Republic

Merci beaucoup Slavek !
On December 29, 2016, the Czech Post put into circulation (main post office of Prague 1) a special pictorial mechanical cancellation devoted to the 60th anniversary of Czechoslovakia's victory at the World Volleyball Championship held in Paris in 1956.
This cancellation, showing that team's iconic volleyball player, Milan Purnoch, was applied to the letter below. Thank you very much Slavek !

At this World Championship, Czechoslovakia won its first gold medal in this competition (ahead of Romania), after two silver medals in the previous two championships (in 1949 and 1952).
Czechoslovakia was again world champion in 1966 at home (in Prague). I do not know if a similar cancellation was issued for the 50th anniversary of this victory ?
With that team, Milan Purnoch (born in 1933) was also European champion in 1955 and 1958.
Slavek used the stamp (20 CZK), issued on August 31, 2011 on the occasion of the 27th European Volleyball Men's Championship held in Austria and Czech Republic that year.
