Série EUROPA 2013 sur lettre de Slovénie

EUROPA 2013 stamp set on a cover from Slovenia

Like many other postal administrations, the Slovenian Post has chosen a contemporary postal mean of transport and another one older to illustrate the two stamps of its EUROPA series issued on March 22, 2013.
Designed by Edi Berk, this series was used on the cover below posted on June 10, 2013 in Ljubljana, the country's capital. Thank you very much Petra :-)
These two stamps have been printed each on sheet of 8 stamps + 1 label, with some examples of postmarks in the margins, as it's the case for the two stamps below.

The stamp to the left (€ 0.64) features a "Krpan" mail bike currently used by the Post of Slovenia in the main cities of the country.
Specially designed for mail delivery in 2001 by Matevž Fortuna, this yellow bike is manufactured by the company Vizija sport d.o.o. in Logatec.
This bike is named after Martin Krpan, a hero of the Slovenian literature created by writer Fran Levstik (1831-1887).
The other stamp (€ 0.92) depicts a postal stagecoach dating from the second half of the 18th century. This type of coach was able to be used on the postal route linking the cities of Vienna, Ljubljana and Trieste in three days.
The arrival of the railways gradually put an end to the use of these postal coaches...

Emission commune Italie/Saint-Marin 2013

Italy/San Marino 2013 joint stamp issue

On June 7, 2013, the postal administrations of Italy and San Marino have issued an interesting (and impressive by its size !) souvenir sheet dedicated to the 550th anniversary of the determination of the border between the two countries.
It is the Italian version of this sheet designed by Marco Biordi, consisting of 4 stamps (€ 0.70 each), that was used on the letter below posted on the first day of issue in Verona. Thank you very much Giovanni :-)
To note the special postmarks featuring the Basilica of San Zeno, a Romanesque church built from the 11th century.

It is indeed on June 27, 1463 that the "Pacts of Fossombrone" were signed and allowed San Marino to expand its territory with the three castles of Fiorentino, Montegiardino and Serravalle (the castle of Faetano was incorporated one year later).
These four castles are featured in the part surrounded by a red line on the map of San Marino to the right on this souvenir sheet above.
This event then put an end to years of hostility between the small Republic and the Malatesta, an Italian family which ruled over Rimini. This family fell into disgrace with the pope and San Marino people then took the opportunity to sign an alliance with the Church on September 21, 1461. This conflict ended in 1463 with the victory of San Marino, after which Pope Pius II attributed to the Republic these three castles...
This episode is both the last war and the last territorial expansion of San Marino in history.
An excerpt from the Papal Bull of Pope Pius II regarding the integration of the three castles is also included on the left side of this souvenir sheet.

Série EUROPA 2013 sur lettre d'Azerbaïdjan

EUROPA 2013 stamp set on a cover from Azerbaijan

A big thank you Mahir for this beautiful cover sent by registered mail on May 31, 2013 from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan :-)
Mahir has franked his letter with the complete EUROPA series (2 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet), designed by Khasay Mirzoyev, issued on February 25, 2013, this year devoted to postal vehicles or postman van.
If I'm not wrong, Azerbaijan is issuing EUROPA stamps since 1998 whereas the country is not officially a member of the European postal organization PostEurop...

The two single stamps (20 and 60 qepiks, print run: 20,000 each) feature some more or less old postal vehicles used by the Post of Azerbaijan ("Azərpoçt").
The stamp (1 Manat) of the souvenir sheet (print run: 10,000) depicts a little postal stagecoach drawn by a single horse. I do not know exactly when this type of postal vehicle was used ?
Some other postal vehicles are included in the margins of this sheet as well as other means of mail transport : train, plane, boat.
Some landmarks of Baku are also depicted in the margins, such as the three Flame Towers (top right), a residential complex inaugurated in 2012...
To note that the two EUROPA stamps of this series were also issued in a booklet of 8 stamps (4 of each) as well as some unperforated versions of the complete set (booklet, m/s, stamps).

Mahir finally used another stamp (50 qepiks) on the other side of his letter above. That stamp was issued in a souvenir sheet (print run: 20,000), issued on April 11, 2013 composed of five stamps and devoted to different lighthouses of the Caspian Sea (Absheron Peninsula).
The Boyuk Zhire lighthouse above is located on an island off the city of Baku.

Amitié franco-allemande - TAD spéciaux

Franco-German friendship - Special postmarks

Merci beaucoup Olivier :-)
On May 19, 2013, two special postmarks have been issued in France and Germany devoted to the friendship between the two countries, 50 years after the signing of the Élysée Treaty, also called Franco-German friendship Treaty.
I was lucky enough to receive the beautiful covers and philatelic souvenirs below regarding these French and German cancellations. Thank you very much Olivier :-)

The French postmark above was available in Strasbourg on the occasion of the European Parliament's open day.
It was designed from a photograph of two "builders" of this Franco-German cooperation, Konrad Adenauer and Charles de Gaulle, taken at the signing of this Elysée Treaty in Paris on January 22, 1963.
As a reminder, this Elysée Treaty sets out the objectives of enhanced cooperation between Germany and France primarily in the fields of international relations, defense and education.
Olivier has of course used the stamp issued jointly with Germany on January 3, 2013 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this Treaty !

The same thing above but with the German version (postmark and stamp) !
The cancellation of the Deutsche Post has been designed from the same photograph and includes also the years of death of Konrad Adenauer and Charles de Gaulle.
To note that this postmark, normally issued from the city of Pforzheim (Baden-Württemberg), was curiously also available on the same day at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and this letter has been sent from France with a German cancellation without any problem ??
This city of Pforzheim, located not far from the French border, was probably chosen because it was almost completely destroyed by the Royal Air Force at the end of the World War II...

Olivier was finally able to make this interesting philatelic item above, with the two joint stamps and their postmarks, but also the diptych EUROPA issued the same day by the French Post with its FDC cancellation, just beautiful !

Timbre EUROPA 2013 en Russie

EUROPA 2013 stamp from Russia

The EUROPA stamp issued by the Russian Post in 2012 was designated the most successful stamp in the competition organized by PostEurop (jury selection) among the fifty EUROPA stamps issued that year.
I do not know if the new EUROPA stamp, issued on April 26, 2013, will meet the same success ?
It is that stamp (15 rubles, print run : 480,000), devoted to postal vehicles, that has been used on this nice cover below mailed on May 13, 2013 from St. Petersburg. Thank you very much Yuri :-)
That stamp, designed by V. Beltyukov, features a postal sleigh pulled by three horses (Troika) in a snowy landscape, used in the country in the 18th century.

To note that this stamp was issued in a sheet of 8 stamps with mentions in Russian and English in the upper and lower margins.
This sheet was issued with an error in the words in English ("postal mens of transport" instead of "postal means of transport") and a new correct version in limited edition (how many ?) was reissued...
Yuri has completed his postage with four self-adhesive stamps being part of the 6th definitive series (12 stamps) issued on October 1, 2009, devoted to different Kremlins of the country : those located in Astrakhan (1.00 rubles), Zaraisk (1.50 rubles), Rostov (3.00 rubles) and Nizhny Novgorod (4.00 rubles).

Relations "médicales" Algérie-Chine...

Algeria-China "medical" relations...

Just after the country's independence and the departure of the French in 1962, the Algerian authorities launched in March 1963 an emergency appeal to the international community in order to help injured and bruised people after years of war.
In April 1963, China was the first country to respond to this appeal by sending a medical team of 13 experts who then settled in south-western Algeria.
50 years later, the Algerian Post has commemorated the installation of this first Chinese medical team in the country (and also in Africa) by issuing, in preview sale on 16 and 17 April 2013, a special stamp.

I was lucky to receive the interesting FDC above (thank you very much Omar !) regarding that stamp (15 Dinars), designed by K. Krim, with a FDC cancellation from Tlemcen :-)
That stamp features a caduceus, a short laurel or olive staff entwined by two serpents surmounted by wings, often used as a symbol of medicine, with also the rod of Asclepius that has only a single snake and no wings (as the example shown on the illustration on this envelope to the left)...
The wings were depicted on that stamp with the colors of Chinese and Algerian flags, the rest of the stamp being composed of a map of Africa on a red background (also the two colors of China).
To note that this stamp is not a joint issue with China.

As mentioned yesterday on this blog, the Czech Post issued on May 29, 2013, a new stamp in its "For Children" series this year dedicated to the famous character of the Little Mole ("Krteček" or "Taupek" in French) by Czech director and author of children's cartoons Zdeněk Miler (1921-2011).
This issue reminds me a lot of memories of my childhood when the French television showed this cartoon featuring this little mole with a awkward gait, living all sorts of adventures with her friends Mishka the mouse, Zajic the rabbit or Jezek the hedgehog...

It is that self-adhesive stamp (permanent 'A' rate corresponding to the price of a domestic ordinary letter up to 50g, i.e. currently 10 CZK) that appears in two copies on the nice official FDC above. Thank you very much Bret :-)
That stamp features the Little Mole aboard a rocket, as it's also the case on the FDC cancellation from Prague and on the other special postmark above to the left, designed by Otakar Karlas who laid out the stamp and the book 10 stamps in which it was issued.

This special cancellation was offered to the public in the post office N° 1 of Prague from May 29 to June 4, 2013.
I was also lucky to receive the special cover above (thank you very much Slavek) with that cancellation issued on the last day !
In the fifty episodes of this cartoon broadcasted between 1957 and 2002, its' worth noting that the characters are not voiced and that their speech is reduced to short non-figurative exclamations.
In the early 1950s, Zdeněk Miler who had to design an animated film for children having flax processing for theme, had the idea to feature this little mole after stumbling over a molehill during a walk in the forest...

Bret was kind enough to send me the First Day sheet above regarding that stamp ("Krtek a raketa") as well as the booklet of 10 stamps below :-)

The cover of this booklet above includes the illustration of the stamp (right) and the engraving on the First Day Cover (left).

20 ans de la constitution andorrane

20 years of the Andorran Constitution

On February 2, 1993, the parliament of Andorra (General Council) adopted the first constitution in the history of the Principality. It was then approved by referendum on March 14, 1993 by 74% of the population.
On April 28, 1993, it was signed by the syndic général and the Andorra's two co-princes, the Bishop of Urgell and the President of the French Republic (François Mitterrand).
This constitution, consisting of 107 articles, finally entered into force on May 4, 1993 and then allowed the Principality to have a political line outward and to become an independent, constitutional, democratic and social state with this particular political system of co-principality.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of this constitution, the French Post in Andorra issued on March 15, 2013, a special stamp (€ 0.63, print run: 70,000) designed by Father Moles.
It is that stamp, with this stylized tree with seven branches (such as the number of Andorran parishes), that was used on this nice cover above posted on May 10, 2013 on the parish of Escaldes-Engordany. Thank you very much Olivier :-)
The postmark was specially issued on the occasion of the general assembly of the Philatelic Association "Philandorre" held that day in this parish.
This cancellation depicts one of the treasures in this parish, the Romanesque church (12th century) Sant Miquel d'Engolasters with its small nave and its impressive 17 meters high bell tower.
To note that the Spanish Post in Andorra has curiously not expected this year the issue of a stamp devoted to this 20th anniversary of the constitution while the 10th anniversary (in 2003, the same by the French Post) and the 15th anniversary (in 2008) were commemorated...

Timbre EUROPA 2013 sur lettre de Slovaquie

EUROPA 2013 stamp on a cover from Slovakia

On May 9, 2013, the Slovak Post has issued a single stamp as part of the EUROPA issues whose theme this year, chosen by PostEurop, is the "Postal vehicles".
It is that engraved stamp (€ 0.90, print run : 300,000) that was used to frank the cover below mailed on May 20, 2013 from Bratislava, the Slovak capital. Thank you very much Robert :-)
That stamp depicts a postal bus (a post horn is included on the door) used in the early 20th century on the Czechoslovak roads. In 1927, 326 postal vehicles were in circulation on 2,650 km of roads.

This postal bus was manufactured from a Škoda 125 chassis equipped with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine (top speed : 60 km/h, consumption : 10 to 15 litres per 100 km).
The bus bodywork was designed by the company Sodomka located in Vysoké Mýto.
The other stamp above to the right (permanent rate T2 50g, i.e. € 0.45 currently), issued on April 26, 2013, is part of the annual series of the Slovak Post dedicated to "technical monuments", a windmill located in Holíč here.
This Dutch-type windmill, with a cylindrical stone structure, was built in the 1880s and operated until 1926.
In the 19th century, more than 5,000 watermills were used in Slovakia as well as about 20 windmills primarily used for the flour production.

Croix de Záviš à Vyšší Brod - Nouveau timbre tchèque

Záviš' Cross in Vyšší Brod - New Czech stamp

Merci beaucoup Bret :-)
On May 29th 2013, the Czech Post issued two new stamps devoted respectively to this beautiful golden Záviš Cross (26 CZK) and to the famous Little Mole "Krteček" by the Czech illustrator and animator Zdeněk Miler (Permanent 'A' rate).
I will speak later about this last stamp as well as the special "Krteček and the rocket" postmark applied on the first day of issue on this beautiful letter below sent by registered mail from Prague. Thank you very much Bret :-)

Bret has used above to the right two copies of the stamp, designed and engraved by Miloš Ondráček, dedicated to this reliquary two-barred Záviš' Cross, created between 1220 and 1230.
70 cm high and 28 cm wide, this silver cross made of silver and covered with Arabian gold leaves, is composed of 44 precious stones and 174 pearls.
According to the Rožmberk Chronicle (14th and 15th century), this cross, which would be one of the relics of a piece of the cross used to crucify Christ, was bequeathed to the monks of the Cistercian monastery of Vyšší Brod by Záviš of Falkenštejn, hence its name.

That stamp was issued in a sheet of five stamps like the one above that Bret was kind enough to include in his letter !
In order not to be captured by Nazi troops during the annexation of the Sudetenland, that cross was moved in 1939 from the Abbey of Vyšší Brod to the treasure of St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle.
In 2010, the cross was inscribed on the list of Czech national cultural heritage and is part, with the crown jewels and the reliquary of St. Maur, of the most valuable gold artefacts of Czech Republic.
This cross is also considered as one of the top 10 most precious church historical items in the world.

Bret finally sent me the official FDC above (with a postmark from Vyšší Brod) as well as the commemorative sheet below regarding that same stamp :-)
The engraving to the left on the envelope above depicts one of the nine enamelled medallions included on the rear side of this Záviš' Cross, devoted to portraits of saints (with their names in Ancient Greek) : Georgius, Georgcos, Paulus, Thomas, Theologus, Petrus (here), Ionnes, Demetrius and Athanasius.

This stamp, a real work of art, will probably be one of the best ones issued in 2013 by the Czech Post !

Journée mondiale sans tabac 2013 en Moldavie

World No Tabacco Day 2013 in Moldova

The Post of Moldova has commemorated the World No Tobacco Day ("Ziua mondială fără tutun") by issuing, on May 31, 2013, a special postmark in Chișinău, the capital of the country.
It is that explicit cancellation that was applied on this nice illustrated envelope below (issued in 2009) depicting a fountain in the "Stefan cel Mare si Sfint" Park. Thank you very much Sergio :-)
Sergio has used to the right a stamp (L 1.20, print run : 50,000), issued on September 10, 2011, to educate people regarding the effects of smoking on health...
It is indeed the sentence "Smoking is unhealthy" ("fumatul dăunează sănătăţii" in Moldovan) that is included on this stamp, designed by Vitalie Roşca.

This stamp (and its as much explicit design) features the harmful effects of the toxic smoke from a cigarette when inhaled in a human body, in particular in the lungs.
WHO marks each year this World No Tobacco Day to highligh the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.
Nearly 6 million people die each year due to tobacco, including more than 600,000 dying from exposure to second-hand smoke...
The second stamp above to the left (L 2.40) is part of a set of 3 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet, issued on December 10, 1994, devoted to the participation of the Moldova's football team to the preliminary round of the European Championships held in England in 1996.

Timbre EUROPA 2013 sur lettre du Kazakhstan

EUROPA 2013 stamp on a cover from Kazakhstan

Very happy to write about this cover from Kazakhstan, posted in Almaty on May 29, 2013, with you as Vladimir (thank you so much !) used some stamps belonging to my favorite topics : EUROPA and Olympics :-)
For its EUROPA 2013 stamp issued on April 9th (200 Tenge, print run : 220,000) devoted this year to the theme of "Postal vehicles", the Post of Kazakhstan (Kazposta) chose a rather original illustration showing a postman on a camel probably delivering mail in the vast steppes of the country...
That stamp reproduces a work dating from 1916 by the painter Nikolai Khludov (1850-1935) who went to live in Almaty from 1877 where he taught drawing.

Like this work, most of Khludov's paintings are devoted to Kazakh evrey day scenes in the early 20th century.
To note that this stamp was issued in two different sheets, both consisting of 10 stamps, one of them including two pairs of tête bêche stamps (the stamp used above was extracted from the "normal" sheet).
Vladimir has also used above a stamp in two copies (25 Tenge) issued on April 2, 2008 to celebrate the stop of the Olympic torch relay of the Beijing Games that day in Almaty, the largest city in the country.
The Post of Kazakhstan had also issued on August 10, 2008 two other stamps devoted to these Beijing games.

A short post to share with you this interesting souvenir from the French city of Rezé (department of Loire-Atlantique) where was organized by the "Cercle des Associations Philatéliques de l'Arrondissement Nantais" (CAPAN), on 25 and 26 May 2013, the "Championnat philatélique interrégional " Philaouest regarding five FFAP affiliated philatelic groups (22 departments in total) located in the western part of France.

To note the special postmark below with a different mention ("59th Brittany Regional Philatelic Championship" in French) and the portrait of Anne of Brittany (1488-1514) as well as the arms of the Dukes of Brittany (ermine and fleur-de-lys).

I will talk about Anne of Brittany ("Anne de Bretagne"), who was Queen of France two times, with more details in 2014 because a stamp will be issued to commemorate the 500th anniversary of her death.
On the occasion of this philatelic championship, the LISA (ATM stamp) above was issued, designed by Claude Perchat (printed on a LISA 2 thermic paper, print run : 20,000).

Gastronomie, costumes et design en Slovénie

Gastronomy, folk costumes and design in Slovenia

Thank you very much Petra for this nice cover mailed on April 26, 2013 from Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital :-)
The stamp to the right (€ 0.27), issued on January 25, 2013, is part of the series of the Slovenian Post devoted to ancient costumes now part of the national heritage.
Designed by the Studio Arnoldvuga+, this stamp is based on a work by the painter Franz Kurz zum Thurn und Goldenstein, dating from 1838, showing a fisherman dressed in his Sunday best and his wife in the region of Trnovo near Ljubljana at the end of the 18th century.

The stamp at the bottom (€ 0.58), issued on November 23, 2012, is dedicated to Slovenian industrial design and in particular to the ETA 80 telephone designed in 1978 by the freelance designer Davorin Savnik.
Manufactured by the company Iskra and exhibited in the greatest museums (Museum of Modern Art in New York...), this phone, now a timeless cult object, is considered as the most awarded and copied in the world !
The last two se-tenant stamps above (€ 0.77 each), also issued on November 23, 2012, are part of the annual series of the Slovenian Post dedicated to gastronomy.
The Carniolan sausage or "Kranjska klobasa" (named after this historic region of Slovenia) and sautéed potatoes or "Pražen Krompir" are on the menu here. Bon appetit !
Festivals are taking place each year in Slovenia regarding these two dishes and the recipe for these sautéed potatoes was part of the first original Slovene cookbook published in 1868 by Magdalena Pleiweis...

Édit de Milan et CICR en Serbie

Edict of Milan and ICRC in Serbia

As it was the case in Italy, Vatican, San Marino or Bosnia and Herzegovina (Croatian Post Mostar), the Post of Serbia has also commemorated the 1700th anniversary of the promulgation of the Edict of Milan by issuing, on April 5, 2013 a stamp and a souvenir sheet.
It is that sheet (112 dinars) and that stamp (50 dinars) that were used to the left on this nice cover sent by registered mail on June 3, 2013 from the city of Bela Crkva. Thank you very much Emanuel :-)
To note this mysterious inkmark "Pošiljalac sam frankirao" applied to the right ?
As a reminder, Constantine I, Roman Emperor from 306 to 337, enacted, with Licinius, this Edict of Milan in 313, establishing the freedom of worship and placing the Christian god over his role as emperor.
This Edict then put an end to centuries of persecution of Christians who were a minority in the Roman Empire at that time...

The souvenir sheet is very interesting because it includes a bust of the Emperor Constantine (4th century, Capitoline Museums in Rome) on the stamp as well as a map of Italy and the Balkan region at that time.
You can see the location of the city of Milan (Mediolanum) but also of the Serbian cities of Belgrade (Singidunum) and Niš (Naissus, the birthplace of Constantine), that were then located in upper Moesia.
The stamp of this series features a bronze bust of Constantine (4th century) kept at the Museum of Niš. The Chi Rho, the Christian symbol that Constantine wore at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312, is finally included on the sheet and the stamp.
The third stamp above to the right (50 dinars), issued on May 8, 2013, is devoted to the 150th anniversary of the founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
A portrait of Henry Dunant (Nobel Peace Prize in 1901), one of its founders, is depicted on that stamp mentioning also the year 1876 when the Red Cross of Serbia was created.
This stamp was issued in sheet of 9 stamp + 1 coupon with mentions in the margins in several languages (in French here !).
Many postal administrations have already issued stamps in 2013 devoted to the 150th anniversary of the ICRC : Germany, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Monaco, Lithuania, Belgium...

Nouveau carnet "Croix-Rouge" en France

New Red Cross booklet in France

Merci beaucoup Jean-Claude :-)
On the occasion of the national quest organized by the French Red Cross from 1 to 9 June 2013, La Poste has issued (preview sale on June 1) a special booklet consisting of 10 self-adhesive stamps (permanent rate "Green Letter 20g", currently € 0.58), entitled "Les petits ruisseaux font les grandes rivières" ("Big rivers are made of small creeks").
The first day of issue of this booklet (print run : 1.4 million) took place in Paris (at the "Carré d'Encre" in the presence of the artist Isy Ochoa) but also at the post office of Aurec-sur-Loire (Department of Haute-Loire).
I was lucky to receive the cover and the beautiful philatelic souvenir below regarding this series of stamps with the special postmark from Aurec-sur-Loire. Thank you very much Jean-Claude :-)

This series of 10 stamps, designed by Isy Ochoa (who had already designed the 24 "Flavors of our regions" stamps issued in 2010), is devoted to the longest river in France, the Loire (1013 km), through different landscapes, from its source (at the Mont Gerbier de Jonc, in Ardèche) to its estuary in Loire-Atlantique.
The special cancellation (without the words "First Day of Issue"), also designed by Isy Ochoa, features this Mont Gerbier de Jonc.
If I'm not wrong, I believe that it is the first time that La Poste is releasing this type of Red Cross booklet on the occasion of this national quest, with a surcharge of € 2.00 per booklet for the benefit of the humanitarian organization.
More than 2.2 million Euros are expected by the Red Cross through the sale of this booklet !

Jean-Claude has also sent me the very interesting souvenir above specially edited by the "Vellave Philatelic Association" !
The ten stamps of this booklet are included, as well as the course of the Loire river in the upper left.
The photo at the top right shows a view of the island (with its castle whose construction began around the year 800) on the Lake Grangent, a water reservoir artificially created on the Loire river by the Grangent dam.
This lake, also depicted on the stamp above at the top, is located near the town of Aurec-sur-Loire.

Liechtenstein : Timbres EUROPA 2013 et Accord douanier avec la Suisse

Liechtenstein : EUROPA 2013 and Customs Treaty with Switzerland stamps

On March 4, 2013, the Post of the Principality of Liechtenstein has probably issued the the most surprising and disconcerting stamp being part of the EUROPA issues devoted this year to postal vehicles !
It is that stamp (1.40 CHF) that appears at the bottom right on the letter below posted on June 4th, 2013 in the capital, Vaduz.
As it was the case last year, this stamp was designed in collaboration with the Liechtenstein School of Art and, after a competition, it is a drawing by a young designer from Schellenberg, Mirjam Büchel (born 1992), that was chosen.

This drawing with a contemporary design, entitled "VehicleWheels", depicts a wheel composed of three different wheels, each of which belongs to a distinct era of postal transport : carriage, bicycle and car. This stamp is featuring the three colors of the flag of Liechtenstein (red, blue and yellow).
Moreover, that stamp symbolizes the close links between the Post and the Principality with the country's mountainous silhouette in the middle !
The same day, the diptych above (2 x 2 CHF) was also issued on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the signing of the Customs Treaty with Switzerland (on March 29, 1923 exactly).
depicts a wheel composed of three different wheels, each of which belongs to a quite distinct era of postal transport

Moreover, the stamp symbolizes the close links between the post and also the mountainous principality with silhouette of countries in the middle! The same day, the diptych above (2 x 2 CHF) was also issued on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the signing of the border agreement with Switzerland (March 29, 1923 exactly).
These stamps show a helicopter view over the border between the two countries (Switzerland to the left and Liechtenstein to the right), with the Rhine valley in the center.
A stamp had already been issued in 1998 for the 75th anniversary of that same Treaty.
Finally, to note in the bottom left on this cover, the special postmark of the Liechtenstein Post ("Laura in Mâcon", designed by Armin Hoop) issued during the "Salon Philatélique de Printemps" organized from 5 to 7 April 2013 in Mâcon, France.

70 years of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising - FDC

Even if this is not a joint issue, the postal administrations of Israel and Poland have logically issued stamps this year to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
I was lucky to receive the official FDC below issued on April 19, 2013 by the Polish Post. Thank you very much Kazimierz :-)
That stamp (3.80 zł, print run : 300,000), designed by Marzanna Dąbrowska, is simply featuring a flower-shaped symbol with the yellow Star of David in its center.
The illustration on the left is based on a famous photograph showing the arrest of Jewish resistance women, among them Malka Zdrojewicz to the right.

N'oublions jamais !
As a reminder, during the Second World War, Germans established many Ghettos in the major cities in Poland to concentrate the Jewish population. The Warsaw Ghetto, with nearly 400,000 residents (30% of the population of the city), was the largest in the country.
In January 1943, following the many deportations to extermination camps, the Ghetto's population was falling to only 71,000 people...
Under the leadership of several Jewish organizations, a resistance force against deportations took place and took control of the Ghetto.
The uprising took place until May 16, 1943 with tragic losses : 7,000 ghetto residents were killed, 6,000 were burned alive or gassed during the total destruction of the Ghetto, the other 58,000 people were deported to the extermination camp of Treblinka and to several labor camps...
The Polish Jewish community almost totaly disappeared during the Holocaust and half of the 6 million Polish people killed during this war were Jews. Let's never forget !

50 ans du club Mercedes-Benz en Rép. Tchèque

50 Years of the Mercedes-Benz Club in Czech Rep.

Merci beaucoup Bret :-)
On May 25th 2013, the Czech Post has released, at the post office No. 1 in Prague, a new special postmark dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Mercedes-Benz Club.
Around the world, nearly 80 clubs representing 90,000 members, are indeed helping to preserve the rich automotive heritage of the Mercedes-Benz brand through numerous public presentations of their classic cars in particular...
It is that postmark, designed by Miloslav Bláha, that was applied on the very nice letter below sent by registered mail from Prague. Thank you very much Bret :-)

This cancellation features the logo of this 50th anniversary with the emblem of Mercedes-Benz inside the number 0 as well as the mention "1963-2013".
Bret has used several stamps for this postage and in particular the stamp dedicated to Mozart, issued on August 31, 2011 in a booklet of 6 self-adhesive stamps.
This stamp, designed by Marina Richterová, was awarded the 2nd place of the Grand Prix of the International Philatelic Exhibition WIPA in Vienna regarding worldwide stamps issued in 2011, behind Liechtenstein (m/s "Year of the Dragon") and ahead United Arab Emirates (m/s "Ghaf tree") !
I've also already mentioned on this blog the 18 Kč stamp (Hoopoe) above, being part of a beautiful souvenir sheet of 4 stamps, issued on September 1, 2010, devoted to the Biosphere Reserve of the lower valley of the Morava, located in the southeast of the country.

The third stamp used on this first letter is also present on the cover above, with the same special postmark devoted to the 50th anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz Club.
That stamp (permanent rate "E" for sending a letter up to 20g to Europe, i.e. 20 Kč currently) is part of a booklet of six self-adhesive stamps, issued on September 5, 2012, depicting some drawings by Czech artist Václav Zapadlík (born 1943), who became famous around the world in the 1990's for its beautiful representations of old cars.
To stay in connection with the cancellation, this stamp shows a Mercedes-Benz 540 car dating from 1936 !

Bret was finally kind enough to send me the numbered commemorative sheet above regarding also the 50th anniversary of this Mercedes-Benz Club in Czech Republic !
It is the same model Mercedes-Benz 540 which seems to have been shown above (in its convertible version) as well as the special postmark at the lower right, printed directly on the sheet...
It is worth noting that autograph, probably written by Václav Zapadlík ?
