EUROPA 2018 (Bridges) stamp set on FDC from Romania

As in previous years, the Romanian Post issued, on April 12, 2018, a series of two EUROPA stamps (design: Victor Telibaşa) declined in sheet of 32 stamps each, in a mini-sheet of 6 stamps each, as well as in 2 versions of souvenir sheets of 4 stamps (2 of each).
Before the national birds in 2019, the theme chosen by the PostEurop organization for EUROPA stamps issued in 2018 is "Bridges" ("Poduri" in Romanian).
Thank you very much Dorin for this very nice illustrated envelope sent by registered mail from Bucharest (office No 37) on the first day of issue, including these 2 se-tenant stamps, extracted from one of the 2 souvenir sheets of 4 stamps (print run: 7,200 for each souvenir sheet)!
The stamp on the right (L 3.50) represents the Bridge of Lies ("Podul Minciunilor"), one of the symbols of the city of Sibiu (Transylvania, center of the country).
This bridge (10 meters long), built in 1859 on the site of an old wooden bridge, was one of the first cast iron bridges in Europe, allowing to pass from the lower town to the upper town of the medieval district of Sibiu.

Several legends are linked to this bridge, especially the one predicting that a person who lies on this bridge makes it move and make weird noises ... Other legends claim that merchants of the nearby market were thrown from this bridge when they cheated customers, the same when virgin women were lying about their supposed virginity ...
The other stamp (L 16) shows an aerial view of the Anghel Saligny bridge located in Cernavodă (south-east of the country), a metal railway bridge built between 1890 and 1895 by the Romanian engineer Anghel Saligny (1854-1925).
Built 30 meters above the Danube river, this bridge was part of the railway line connecting Bucharest to Constanta, replaced in 1987 by a new 2-way railway bridge (to the left on the stamp).
The illustration on this envelope evokes an artistic reconstruction (from 1907) of the Trajan's Bridge, an ancient Roman bridge built on the Danube river in the south-west of present-day Romania (border with Serbia).
Built in 105 for the deployment of Roman troops during the Dacian Wars, this bridge was the longest in the world for more than 1000 years!

My first cover received from Bear Island (Bjørnøya), Norway !

After a letter received from Longyearbyen (Svalbard Archipelago) and another one from Jan Mayen island, I'm happy to share with you this new special letter from Norway, this time sent from Bear Island ("Bjørnøya" in Norwegian).
Thank you very much Rune for this letter sent on April 16, 2018 from this isolated island, located in the western part of the Barents Sea (bordering the Norwegian Sea), between Metropolitan Norway and the Svalbard Archipelago!
Rune had the good idea to use on this letter the series of two stamps (NOK 10 and NOK 20), issued on 22 February 1996 by the Norwegian Post, devoted to Svalbard (landscape and polar bear).

This island was discovered by Willem Barents and Jacob van Heemskerk in 1596 and bears this name because of a polar bear swimming nearby (no bears live there today it seems).
Considered as terra nullius until the Svalbard treaty, Bear Island has been officially under Norwegian sovereignty since 1920.
Despite its isolation, this island has had some commercial activities in the past (coal mining, fishing, whaling) and currently hosts only one meteorological station (Herwighamna in the northern part).
Declared a nature reserve in 2002, Bear Island is marked by a great diversity of seabirds such as fulmars, puffins or guillemots, a bird symbolized on the postmark applied to this letter.
To note that this postmark curiously includes only the latitude (74° 30' North) of the meteorological station of the island (longitude 19° 00' East) ...

Tribute to great Korean scientists - Science in Korea (4th part)

Merci beaucoup Ji-Ho !
After 3 previous series (3 stamps issued each time) issued in 2015, 2016 and 2017, the Korean Post has put into circulation, on March 21, 2018, a fourth series (3 stamps also) devoted to the theme of "Science in Korea".
Three scientists from different periods of the country's history, Gim Jeong-ho, Yi Cheon and Choi Hyeong-sup, are in the spotlight this year, all inductees of the Korea Science and Technology Hall of Fame, three "distinguished scientists and engineers who brought honor to Korea"...
I was lucky enough to receive the three First Day covers below regarding this series, with postmarks from Nambusan. Thank you very much Ji-Ho!

These 3 stamps (330 won, print run: 252,000 each) were printed by Cartor Security Printing in the same sheet of 18 stamps (6 of each).
Designed by Shin, Jae-yong, these stamps include, as for previous series, some pictograms (printed with a blue metallic ink) referring to the works of these scientists, also featured on the postmark.
The two stamps above are dedicated to Gim Jeong-ho (1804-1866), a cartographer of the Joseon Dynasty who greatly contributed to the geographical development of Korea through his compilation of traditional maps, especially the three large maps called Daedongyeojido , Cheonggudo and Dongyeodo. Daedongyeojido was the result of 30 years of research and constitutes the most authentic geographical map of the Joseon Dynasty, almost identical to the current map of the Korean peninsula.

Yi Cheon (1376-1451), honored above, was an engineer and a former military officer, who took the lead in the development of science and technology at the time of King Sejong the Great (Joseon Dynasty).
With Jang Yeong-sil, he demonstrated his talent and participated in the production of various astronomical instruments such as the abridged armilla, armillary sphere, and hemispherical sundial.
He also contributed to the development of the typography of the Joseon Dynasty by making Gyeongjaja and Gabinja, metal movable type prints, and also created the standards for weights and measures, which became the groundwork of science and technology in this period.

The last stamp of this series above is devoted to Choi Hyeong-sup (1920-2004), engineer in hydrometallurgy and metallurgy, who established the basis of the administration of science and technology in Korea.
As the first president of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), represented in the background on the stamp, he contributed to the rapid development of this scientific institution.
Choi Hyeong-sup was also Minister of Science and Technology for seven and a half years, an unrivaled record at this office in South Korea.

"International Personalities (2017)" stamp set on cover from Albania

On December 12, 2017, the Albanian Post (Posta Shqiptare) put into circulation a series of three stamps devoted to distinguished international personalities ("figura të shquara ndërkombëtare"), German Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin (1838-1917), French Edgar Degas (1834-1917) and Austrian Stefan Zweig (1881-1942).
Thank you very much Sabri for this beautiful letter, stamped with this complete series, sent on March 26, 2018 from Tirana!
Designed by Llazar Taçi, these 3 stamps were respectively printed at 183,000 (20 lekë), 3,000 (90 lekë) and 73,000 (140 lekë) copies.

Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin (100 years of his death) was a German general and engineer, founder of the Zeppelin company and inventor of the famous airships bearing his name.
The fire of the LZ 129 Hindenburg in May 1937 in Lakehurst (USA) has definitively closed the history of large airships for commercial use even if some Zeppelin NT (new technology) were designed from the 1990s.
Edgar Degas (100 years of his death) was long regarded as the "painter of the dancers" despite a career much more diverse (painting, sculpture, drawing ...).
One of his works "Blue Dancers" (1897, Pushkin Museum in Moscow) is reproduced in the background on the stamp.
Stefan Zweig (75 years of his death) was a writer and journalist whose work was considerably influenced by Freud, with a permanent focus on the psychology of the characters he staged ("Amok" in 1922, "Confusion"in 1926 ...). Affected by the events preceding the Second World War and the rise of Nazism, he left Germany for England and Brazil, where he ended his life in 1942.

Tribute to architect Jan Kaplický on FDC from Czech Republic

On 4 April 2018, the Czech Post put into circulation a new stamp (permanent tariff 'E' for a letter up to 50g to Europe, 35 CZK currently) dedicated to Czech architect Jan Kaplický (1937-2009), famous for his Futuristic projects inspired by nature (cobwebs, butterfly wings, fish scales ...), defying some of the main foundations of modern architecture.
Designed by Alan Záruba and partially engraved by Martin Srb, that stamp appears on the official FDC below (print run: 3,400), with postmarks from Prague including his initials. Thank you very much Bret!
That stamp is dedicated to Jan Kaplický's project for the Czech National Library, in an avant-garde style, finally abandoned in 2007 by the Prague Municipality after sharp criticism, especially by the then President of the Republic (Václav Klaus).

Nikdy na to nezapomenu!"
To note this illustration on the left on this envelope, including France's motto (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity) and the words "To, že smím žít a pracovat ve svobodné zemi je privilegium.
Nikdy na to nezapomenu!" ("The fact that I can live and work in a free country is a privilege. I will never forget it!").

This text is inspired by leaflets of the time supporting this National Library's project by Kaplický.
Through these words, Jan Kaplický probably refers to his exile in the United Kingdom after the failure of the Prague Spring in 1968. He created there in 1982 the London-based architectural and design practice "Future Systems" and was the designer of innovative projects such as the Selfridges Building in Birmingham (2003) or Media Centre of the Lord's Cricket Ground in London (1999) for which he received the prestigious Stirling Prize, awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

That same stamp was used on the 2nd envelope above, with the classic postmark of the first day of issue by the main post office of Prague 1, where took place on April 4, 2018, the 100th edition of the exhibition devoted to stamp production ( "100. Známková tvorba výstavka"), what the illustration on the envelope reminds!

EUROPA 2018 (Bridges) stamp set on FDC from the Republic of Artsakh

On March 30, 2018, the Postal Administration of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic ("Artsakh Post"), now called the Republic of Artsakh, put into circulation two EUROPA stamps (350 and 450 drams), devoted this year to the theme of bridges, especially the Bridge of Jarvanes and the old Bridge of Karavaz.
I was lucky enough to receive the beautiful official FDC below sent from Stepanakert, the capital (to note that no specific place is mentioned on the postmark), franked with this EUROPA 2018 set. Thank you very much Serg!
These 2 stamps, designed by Armen Ghukasyan (and printed in Moldova by Nova Imprim) were each issued in a sheet of 10 stamps and in the same sheetlet of 8 stamps (4 of each) and 2 vignettes.
As a reminder, stamps issued by this self-proclaimed Republic mainly populated by Armenians, are not recognized either by UPU nor by the European postal organization PostEurop managing (since 1993) these EUROPA issues each year.

This territory, disputed between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which is not recognized by the international community, however, issues its own stamps with the mention "Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh" and then "Republic of Mountainous Karabakh" replaced last year by "Republic of Artsakh".
The stamp above on the left is dedicated to the Bridge of Jarvanes built in stone over the Tumi River, 2.8 kilometers northeast of the village of Tumi, in the district of Hadrut (south-east of the territory).
This bridge (length of the span: 5.30 meters) was probably built in 1246 at the same time as the main church of Gtich monastery located nearby.
The other stamp shows the 3 only still standing spans of the old Bridge of Karavaz (5th and 7th century) built over the Arax River, at the foot of Mount Diri in the Kashatagh district (south-west of the territory), at an altitude of 248 meters.
Following measurements in the 1970s, this bridge originally composed of 11 arches, has a length of 130 meters, a width of 6 meters and a height of 12 meters.
Lastly, as in previous years, the EUROPA logo present on these 2 stamps and the FDC postmark is not in conformity (the letter R in particular).

"Salon Philatélique de Printemps 2018 - Sorgues" stamp on FDC from France

After Belfort in 2016 or Paris in 2017, the 39th edition of the Salon Philatélique de Printemps ("Spring Stamp Exhibition") was held from April 6 to 8, 2018 in the city of Sorgues (Vaucluse).
As usual, a stamp (€ 0.95, print run: 800,000) was thus devoted to Sorgues, created and engraved by Sophie Beaujard, put into circulation on April 9, 2018 (general sale).
This nice panoramic stamp is present on the First Day cover below, with postmarks from Paris (design: Claude Perchat). Thank you very much Joël!

This city of Sorgues is marked by a rich heritage, in particular a papal palace built between 1317 and 1324 for pope John XXII, 16 years before the palace of the popes in Avignon.
Located at the confluence of the Ouvèze and Rhône rivers, this city was industrialized in the 19th century with the appearance of many paddle wheels feeding different factories (flour mills, oil mills, silk spinning...).
These wheels are featured on the stamp to the right as well as on the cancellation.
The city hall (neo-classical style), inaugurated in 1859, is represented in the center on that stamp, with the fountain to the left, renovated in 2014.
The suspension bridge of the Armeniers (span of 157 meters), inaugurated in 1926, is also present on that stamp, in the background on the right.

Tribute to pedagogue, writer and archaeologist Eduard Štorch on Czech FDC

On March 4, 2018, the Czech Post issued a new stamp (19 CZK) dévoted to Eduard Štorch (1878-1956), Czech pedagogue, writer and archaeologist, on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of his birth.
Thank you very much Bret and Slavek for these two covers sent on the first day of issue, with respective postmarks from Ostroměř (north of the country), his hometown, and Prague!
That stamp, designed by Zdeněk Daněk, shows a portrait of Eduard Štorch as well as a prehistoric cave entrance and mammoths in the background.

These mammoths probably refer to his best known novel "Mammoth Hunters" (1918) whose history takes place between 30,000 and 20,000 years ago, during the period of the Upper Paleolithic (Gravettian).
Eduard Štorch was indeed the author of many stories for the youth putting in perspective the life of the prehistoric men.
Eduard Štorch was first a teacher and pedagogue, having experimented with new learning techniques, combining classical education with outdoor activities.
Štorch was also a passionate self-taught archaeologist, conducting his own research, especially around Lobeč, in the region of Mělník (Central Bohemian Region).
I really like this official FDC above (print run: 3,200) with this prehistoric flint object on the postmark and this surreal illustration on the left showing a mammoth next to a group of contemporary people around a fire!

On this first cover, another stamp (16 CZK) was used, issued on November 8, 2017 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czech Astronomical Society.
Two se-tenant stamps were used on the 2nd letter above with cancellations from Prague.

"Craftsmanship - Leatherworker" stamp on FDC from France

The French Post started in 2016 a series devoted to craftsmanship, highlighting various crafts in France and the rare, traditional or innovative craftsmanship of these craftsmen.
After stone sculpture and jewelery in 2016, art ironwork and cabinetmaking in 2017, a new stamp was put into circulation on April 3, 2018 (general sale) having this time leatherworker for topic.
That stamp (€ 1.30, print run: 800,010), created by Florence Gendre (as it was the case for the stamp "jewelery" in 2016) and engraved by Pierre Albuisson, is present on the First Day cover below, with cancellations from Paris (Carré d'Encre), designed by Patte & Basset, of March 30, 2018.

Leatherworker designs and manufactures everyday objects such as handbags, belts, fashion accessories, small leather goods (cases, pouches, keychain, wallets, purses) as well as office, travel, sports items (briefcase, suitcase, kit, backpack) or leather items for animals.
In France, factories and workshops are characterized by high quality production, especially for luxury brands with a worldwide reputation (Vuitton, Hermès, Lancel, Longchamp).
The development of this craftsmanship began in 1749 with the creation of the Royal Leather Manufacture.
That stamp is rather successful, with the illustration of a finished product on the left (a handbag) and techniques of working leather to the right (roulette to cut tanned skins, assembly of different leather parts from a needle).

"Flora from Albania" stamp set on cover from Tirana

After a series (3 stamps) issued in 2016, the Albanian Post (Posta Shqiptare) put into circulation on November 1, 2017, a second series (2 stamps) devoted to the flora of Albania ("Flora shqiptare").
Thank you very much Sabri for this nice cover, stamped with this complete stamp set, sent on March 26, 2018 from Tirana!
These two se-tenant stamps, designed by Petraq Papa, are dedicated respectively to the blue bugle (Ajuga reptans) and the blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus).

The stamp on the left (150 lekë, print run: 153,000) depicts a blue bugle ("Ajuga e Piskoit" in Albanian), a perennial plant with blue flowers (flowering between April and July), common in Central and Boreal Europe, as well as in the western part of Asia.
The other stamp (250 lekë, print run: 103,000) features leaves and berries of blueberry ("Boronica" in Albanian), a shrub common in Eurasia and North America, mainly in mountainous regions.
To note a curiosity: that stamp also includes the Latin name of the plant, contrary to the other stamp including only the denomination in Albanian ...

"Fauna of the Pădurea Domnească Nature Reserve" stamp set on FDC from Moldova

On March 29, 2018, the Post of Moldova put into circulation a very nice series (4 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) dedicated to the nature reserve "Pădurea Domnească" ("Princely Forest") and in particular to its unique fauna in Moldova, species protected by law for the most part.
This reserve (6,032 hectares), created in 1993 in the north-west of the country (Glodeni district) along the Prut river marking the border with Romania, is a unique area in terms of biodiversity of flora and fauna, marked by the floodplain of Prut river and its prairie forest (nearly 80% of the territory), one of the oldest in Europe.
It should be noted that the Post of Moldova had already issued stamps in the past devoted to this nature reserve, in particular a EUROPA stamp issued in 1999.

Thank you so much Nicolae for these two splendid official First Day covers (print run: 300 each) respectively regarding the series of 4 stamps and the souvenir sheet, with cancellations from Glodeni (MD-4901)!
The emblem of this reserve (a stylized bison) appears on the FDC postmark as well as on the 5 stamps of this series.
Designed by Vladimir Melnic, these 4 stamps above (print run: 162,000 each) represent respectively a black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), a grey heron (Ardea cinerea), a wild boar (Sus scrofa) and a European bison (Bison bonasus).
47 species of mammals and nearly 160 (breeding and/or migratory) bird species have been identified in this nature reserve, especially the largest colony of egrets in the country.
Following an agreement with the Republic of Poland, 3 bisons were reintroduced to this reserve in 2005 (6 specimens live there today).

The souvenir sheet above (L 9.50, print run: 48,000) is featuring a family of black woodpeckers (Dryocopus martius), the female on the left, the male on the right (characterized by this red cap on the head) and their young in the center, in a nest dug in a coniferous trunk.
It should be noted that conifers constitute only 0.5% of the tree species in this "Pădurea Domnească" nature reserve, made up mainly of oaks (36%) and poplars (33%).
The black woodpecker is the largest (up to 51 cm) species of woodpecker in Europe, a species that is not particularly threatened according to IUCN criteria.

In 2017, the Post of Moldova put into circulation a series of 4 postcards (No 19/2017 to 22/2017, print run: 1,000 each) dedicated to this "Pădurea Domnească" nature reserve, representing 4 of the 5 animal species in the spotlight in this new series (all except wild boar).
Some of these cards, designed by Alexandr Kornienko, were used to design interesting maxicards such as the two examples above (European bison) and below (Grey heron).

Easter Post Office in Germany - Special cancellation from Ostereistedt

Thank you very much Jens for this very nice letter from Germany having Easter for topic!
The special postmark of March 27, 2018 was put into circulation in the town of Ostereistedt (D-27404), located in the Land of Lower Saxony (north-west of the country), known to house, for more than 35 years , the Easter post office ("Osterhasenbüro") of the Deutsche Post.
Children (but also adults!) can send each year their letters (37,000 letters received in 2015!) or emails to the rabbit Hanni ("Hanni Hase"), featured on this cancellation, the mascot of this special post office.
Along the same lines, I've already mentioned on this blog the two Christmas post offices of the Deutsche Post located in Himmelpfort (Brandenburg) and Himmelpforten (Lower Saxony)...

Jens used on his letter the two stamps of a series issued on March 1, 2014, devoted to drawings by Peter Gaymann (born in 1950), famous German cartoonist, graphic designer and writer.
Peter Gaymann, alao named "P. GAY", is particularly known for his comics featuring chickens like those present on these two Greetings stamps, "Frohe Ostern" ("Happy Easter") and "Für Dich" ("For you").
I really like the stamp "Frohe Ostern" (€ 0.45) with this rabbit explaining to a hen how to produce ("entwurf") an egg!

New Phil@poste postmarks with "La Poste" mention in France

On the recommendation of ARCEP (the French Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts), the mention "La Poste" has now to be present on all cancellations released in France (First Day or other temporary offices).
This new provision, which came into force on January 1, 2018, is "likely to protect philatelists and the value of their collections, restoring a new value to the La Poste cancellations, facing other philatelic souvenirs, vignettes ... which are sometimes canceled by non-postal postmarks".
This mention "La Poste" must thus guarantee an official intervention of the delegated operator of the universal service.

I had already mentioned on this blog this new regulation, especially on the very first postmark concerned, put into circulation on January 1, 2018 by the Philapostel association for New Year's greetings from Mont-Saint-Michel.
Thanks to Joël, I'm happy to share this time these 3 special covers concerning each of the 3 "institutional" postmarks of Phil@poste, modified since April 1, 2018 to add this mention "La Poste".
These 3 letters were franked with a "Marianne and Youth" definitive stamp (design: Olivier Ciappa and David Kawena), "Green Letter" rate (€ 0.80 now), put into circulation in 2013 and slightly modified from January 1, 2016 (without the mention "20g").
The postmark above (as well as the envelope), dated April 3, 2018, emanates from the Carré d'Encre, the "philatelist shop" and lovers of written letter shop in Paris, where the French stamps' First Days of issue are taking place.

The 2nd cancellation above concerns the headquarters of Phil@poste in Gentilly (94), with this profile of the deity Ceres, reminding us the first French stamps issued in 1849.
To note that this postmark is curiously dated March 29, 2018, ie 2 days before the official release of this new cachet?

The 3rd postmark above (with an old printing press) was put into circulation by the Service des oblitérations philatéliques ("Philatelic Stamping Service") in Boulazac (24) where Phil@poste prints the stamps of the French philatelic program and some stamps of several other countries (Morocco, Monaco, Vatican, Taiwan, Japan, Luxembourg...).
This Philatelic Stamping Service offers a free service, namely the affixing of "First Day" cancellations for a period of 8 weeks after the issue of the stamp concerned.

From March 28 to June 10, 2018, the Postal Museum of Prague is organizing a new exhibition entitled "2296 KILO - Komiksy, ILustrace, Objekty" ("2296 KILO - Comics, Illustrations, Objects"), devoted to comics and illustrations for children ("Komiks & ilustrace pro děti").
This exhibition takes place in collaboration with students from the Faculty of Design and Art "Ladislav Sutnar" (University of West Bohemia in Plzeň), the only university institution in the country dedicated (since 2011) to the practical study of comics.
Ladislav Sutnar (1897-1976) was a famous illustrator and pioneer of information design in Czechoslovakia.

On the occasion of this exhibition, the Czech Post put into circulation, on April 7, 2018, a special postal stationery (permanent tariff 'E' up to 50g to Europe, 35 CZK currently).
A big thank you Slavek for having sent me this postal stationary (unknown print run), with its associated cancellation, of the first day of issue, issued by the main post office of Prague 1!
This postmark, with mention "Komiks & ilustrace pro děti, výstava ateliéru", was designed by students of this Faculty of Design and Art "Ladislav Sutnar".
This postal stationary includes, as usual, a pre-printed stamp reproducing the design of a Czechoslovak stamp (postal stagecoach on the Charles Bridge) issued in 1966 at the occasion of a stamp exhibition in Prague.

"ASPTT Sports Federation 120th anniversary" stamp on FDC from France

In 1898, the Cycling Union of Postes and Telegraphs of the Gironde was created in Bordeaux, with the aim of teaching postmen to bike and thus allowing a faster and more efficient delivery of mail.
The creation of this Union marked the birth of the ASPTT ("Association Sportive des Postes, Télégraphes et Téléphones" in French) throughout France.
In 1945, 47 ASPTT created the ASPTT Union and, in 1965, President Charles de Gaulle restructured the sport in France, relying in particular on ASPTT which were no longer reserved for PTT members only.
The ASPTT Sports Federation, created in 2005, is approved by the Ministry of Sports and is a member of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee.

Poet and theologian Alexei Mateevici's 130th birth anniversary - special postmark from Moldova

Poet, writer, activist, teacher and theologian, Alexei Mateevici (1888-1917) is considered, despite his short life (he died at 29), as one of the greatest Bessarabian poets with many works such as Ţăranii ("Peasants"), Eu cânt ("I sing") or Ţara ("The Country") as well as articles published about religion or Moldovan folklore.
But Alexei Mateevici is best known for his romantic poem "Limba noastră" ("Our Language") written one month before his death, of which 5 of the 12 stanzas were chosen to become the national anthem of Moldova in 1994 (music composed by Alexandru Cristea).
On March 16, 2018, the Post of Moldova issued a special postmark dedicated to the 130th anniversary of his birth.
This postmark was put into circulation in the village of Căinari (Căuşeni district), located in the south of the country, birthplace of Alexei Mateevici.
