Independence 25th anniversary and chess Olympiad stamps on cover from Georgia

Thank you very much Khatuna for this nice letter sent on November 12, 2020 from Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, franked with different stamps issued in 2016 and 2018!
Georgia declared its independence from the USSR on April 9, 1991 under the mandate of former dissident Zviad Gamsakhourdia, popularly elected as the first President of the Republic on the following May 26. A Military Council then ruled the country before the coming to power of Edward Shevardnadze, the former USSR Minister of Foreign Affairs, in 1992.
The stamp at the top right on this letter (2.90 GEL, print run: 50,000, design: T. Arabidze) was issued on October 24, 2016 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the country's independence.
This stamp, including mentions printed with golden ink (the number 25 among others), depicts the national flag (adopted in 2004 by the new Georgian government after the Rose Revolution), with a crowd in the background gathered in Freedom Square in Tbilisi during the same Rose Revolution in 2003.

The stamp above to the left (0.90 GEL), issued on June 14, 2018, is devoted to the 43rd Chess Olympiad, organized from 23 September to 6 October 2018 in the Georgian city of Batumi, located on the shores of the Black Sea.
These Chess Olympiads (1st edition in 1927) are a biennial (since 1950) international chess competition, involving teams of four players in two categories (open and women).
Nearly 180 countries were represented in Batumi in the "open" category (won by China ahead of USA and Russia) and 146 countries in the "women" category (also won by China ahead of Ukraine and Georgia).
The 3rd stamp above (0.20 GEL) is part of a souvenir sheet (5 stamps) issued on July 6, 2018, dedicated to stage decorator and costume designer Petre Otskheli (1907-1937). Attached to the modernist movement, his scenographic constructivism had a great influence in the art of the stage and decoration in Georgia. He was executed in 1937 during the Stalin's Great Purge.

On October 1, 2020, the Deutsche Post put into circulation a stamp (€ 0.95) paying tribute to one of the most popular footballers in German history, Fritz Walter (1920-2002), on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth.
This stamp, designed by Heribert Birnbach and printed in sheetlet of 10 stamps (with mention of his main titles and awards in the margins), was used on the First Day cover below, with cancellations from Kaiserslautern (Land of Rhineland-Palatinate), his birth city. Thank you very much Jens!
Fritz Walter marked the history of the city club, 1. FC Kaiserslautern (1. FCK), playing there throughout his career (more than 380 games between 1939 and 1959 and 327 goals scored) and winning the German championship in 1951 and 1953. The city stadium, built in 1920, was named after him.

But Fritz Walter made history in German sport by being the captain of the team that won the World Cup in 1954 in Bern, after Germany's victory in the final (3-2) against Hungary.
This victory is nicknamed in German "The Miracle of Bern" because the Hungarian team was at its peak and widely favorite ...
Fritz Walter, featured on this stamp with the trophy of this 1954 World Cup, thus personified by this victory the German renewal of the post-war period.
Fritz Walter played 61 national team games between 1940 and 1958, scoring 61 goals and captaining 30 times.
Jens completed his postage with two stamps (€ 0.10, issued on December 18, 2018 and € 0.05, issued on April 13, 2017) being part of the ongoing definitive "flowers" series (started in 2005), a winter eranthe and a phlox here, to reach the postal rate for a shipment in Europe (€ 1.10) up to 20g.

"Christmas 2020 - Nativity" joint s/s with the Vatican City, on FDC from Austria

For the first time in the history of the two countries, the postal administrations of Austria and Vatican City put into circulation, on November 20, 2020 (Austria) and November 10, 2020 (Vatican), a joint issue, a souvenir sheet (2 stamps), devoted to the theme of Christmas and the Peace Light of Bethlehem in particular.
To note that the Vatican Post also issued the 2 stamps separately.
The Austrian version of this joint souvenir sheet (print run: 260,000, 55,000 for the Vatican version), designed by Kirsten Lubach and printed in the Netherlands by Joh. Enschedé, is present on the FDC below with a "Merry Christmas" cancellation from Linz, capital of Upper Austria. Thank you very much Edna!
This postmark represents the Child Jesus over the Star of Bethlehem, also present on the left stamp (€ 1.00), with the baroque church (consecrated in 1725) of the famous Christkindl pilgrimage sanctuary in Steyr (Upper Austria) in the background.

This place is today known for its temporary post office open every year during the Christmas period.
This tradition of the Peace Light of Bethlehem began in 1986 as part of the Christmas charity initiative "Licht ins Dunkel" ("Light in the darkness") organized by the Austrian radio and television broadcaster ORF of Linz and aimed at collecting spontaneous donations to support children with disabilities, the socially marginalized, as well as foreigners needing assistance.
Every year in December, just before Christmas, a child selected from Austrian scout groups known for their particular commitment to social awareness, lights a light in the Nativity Grotto in Bethlehem, then brought back to Austria to spread around the world as a symbol of peace and brotherhood among peoples.
The 2nd stamp on the right (€ 0.85) features Pope Francis holding a lantern containing this Peace Light of Bethlehem, with St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City in the background.

"50 years of Diplomatic Relations with Singapore - Bridges" joint m/s on FDC from Hungary

Merci beaucoup John !
Since 1970, Hungary and Singapore have maintained diplomatic relations and 2020 therefore marks the 50th anniversary of these relations, marked by the entry into circulation, on October 22, 2020, of a nice joint souvenir sheet (2 stamps) between the 2 countries, having for theme the bridges.
Although Hungary and Singapore are small countries far from each other, they share many things in common: just like Singapore, Hungary has an export-oriented open economy, and both countries are of the same view when it comes to basic principles and commitment to strengthening the rules-based multilateral system and free trade.
Singapore is moreover Hungary's largest trade and investment partner among the ASEAN countries and the two countries have growing exchanges in different fields (education, culture, agriculture, defense ...).

The Hungarian version of this joint numbered souvenir sheet (print run: 50,000), designed by graphic artist Imre Benedek, is present on this splendid official FDC, sent on November 13, 2020 from the village of Gencsapáti (west of the country, near the Austrian border). Thanks a lot John!

The First Day cancellation from Budapest is featuring the official logo of these 50 years of diplomatic relations, also present on the envelope at the bottom left.
National flags appear behind a lion and merlion statue in the border of the sheet, while the silhouettes of some iconic buildings in Budapest and Singapore are depicted in the lower margin.
The Széchenyi Chain Bridge (stamp on the left - HUF 300) is a suspension bridge (380 meters long) that spans the river Danube in Budapest, inaugurated in 1849 and today one of the emblems of the Hungarian capital, with the parliament building. This bridge was destroyed by German troops in 1945 and then rebuilt in 1949.
The other stamp (HUF 300) is dedicated to the Cavenagh Bridge (80 meters long), the only suspension bridge and one of the oldest bridges in Singapore, opened in 1870 over the Singapore River, to commemorate Singapore's new Crown colony of the Straits Settlements status. This bridge is now exclusively pedestrian.

Euromed Postal 2020 (Traditional Gastronomy in the Mediterranean) stamp on cover from Spain

To illustrate the theme of the "Traditional gastronomy in the Mediterranean" ("Gastronomía tradicional del Mediterráneo" in Spanish) chosen this year for the "Euromed Postal" joint stamps, the Spanish Post (Correos) has chosen to evoke the "espeto de sardinas", a technique of grilling sardines, typical of the region of Malaga.
This stamp (€ 2.00, print run: 192,000), featuring the Euromed Postal's logo (a stylized hawk) and printed in a sheetlet consisting of 6 stamps, was used on this letter sent on November 13, 2020 from the city of Alicante. Thank you very much Luis!
Like almost all Spanish stamps issued recently, this stamp is special, printed with a silver effect (sardines) and with a cutout around the fish skewer...
Espeto is one of the most popular specialties that can be tasted on the Costa del Sol in the region of Malaga, the main town on the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia.

This simple dish, very easy to prepare, made from sardines (+ olive oil and sea salt) skewered on a cane, which, cooked over the embers of a fire, is eaten in the natural environment offered by the beaches of the Mediterranean. However, the preparation requires a technique, refined over the years by traditional culture, so that the fish is well skewered and remains whole during cooking.
The popularity of espeto dates back to the end of the 19th century, with the arrival of the first tram and railway lines in Malaga, which allowed locals to approach the sea to enjoy days at the beach.
In 1882 Miguel Martínez Soler opened his famous beach bar in the village of El Palo and was the first to skew sardines on a piece of reed and put them on the sand by the fire.
The place quickly caught the attention not only of the people of Malaga, but also of illustrious figures of the time, such as King Alfonso XII himself.
Today, embers are obtained from olive and almond wood, with particular attention to the direction of the wind when grilling the sardines so that the smoke does not affect their taste.

This stamp (0.75 dinars, print run: 200,000), designed by Yassine Ghorbel, is present in 2 copies on the First Day cover above (with additional postmarks from Tunis). Thank you very much Mourad!
I really love this stamp, featuring the United Nations headquarters in New York (with a world map in the background) as well as the official logo of this 75th anniversary of the United Nations (United Nations emblem, mention "UN75", with the associated slogan "Shaping our future together" in Arabic).
To note also this discreet Tunisian flag at the top left and this stylized blue arrow at the top right, indirectly included in the "UN75" logo at the number 75.
Tunisia is a member of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2020-2021 for the 4th time in its history, having based its candidacy on its ability to build bridges of trust, dialogue, solidarity and cooperation between all member states, positions that have brought Tunisia respect and appreciation at Arab, African and international levels.

"Viticulture" joint set with Malta, on cover from Slovakia

On October 24, 2020, the postal administrations of Slovakia and Malta put into circulation a nice joint series (2 stamps) dedicated to viticulture.
The Slovak version of this joint set (2 se-tenant stamps + label) was used on this letter sent on November 11, 2020 from the small town of Rožňavské Bystré (center-east of the country). Thank you very much Miloš!
These 2 stamps (€ 1.65, print run: 100,000 each), designed by Miguel Farrugia (Malta) and Adrian Ferda (Slovakia), were printed in a single sheetlet consisting of 10 stamps (5 of each) + 2 labels evoking the International Year of Plant Health.
As a reminder, t
he United Nations (in collaboration with FAO) declared 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH), an opportunity to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment, and boost economic development.

The stamp above on the right is dedicated to Maltese viticulture through a vineyard (15,000 vines) located in the Siġġiewi region (south of the main island), operated by "Ta 'Betta Wine Estates" producing 3 types of different wines.
Viticulture in Malta has very ancient origins, introduced by the Phoenicians, developed by the Greeks and Romans, put to sleep during the Muslim occupation and then developed again with the arrival of the Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
The other stamp is dedicated to a wine produced in the region of Skalica (Little Carpathians, western Slovakia), one of the 6 major wine regions of the country, called "Skalický rubín", benefiting from a protected designation of origin (PDO) since 2017.
A bottle of Skalický rubín (vintage 2019) from the Slovak National Collection of Wines produced by "Tureček winery" is pictured in the foreground on this stamp, with a vineyard located on Vintoperk hill in the background.
Slovakia has nearly 600 producers who develop nearly 10,000 hectares of vines for a production mainly for the national market.

"World Children’s Day 2019" stamp set on cover from Kosovo

World Children's Day was first established in 1954 and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare.
November 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
World Children's Day offers each of us an inspirational entry-point to advocate, promote and celebrate children's rights, translating into dialogues and actions that will build a better world for children.
The year 2019 therefore marked the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which undoubtedly prompted the Kosovo Post to issue a series of stamps on this theme ...

These 4 stamps (print run: 6,000 each), put into circulation on November 20, 2019, dedicated to World Children's Day ("Dita ndërkombëtare e fëmijëve" in Albanian), were used on this nice letter sent on October 26, 2020 from the town of Prizren, located in the south of the country. Thank you very much Sabri!
This series was designed by D. Luta (€ 0.50 and € 0.60) and L. Ademi (€ 0.80 and € 0.90) with a somewhat surprising design, as usual for recent stamps from Kosovo : a family photo with 2 children, a girl and a boy inside helmets (American football and motorbike?), a child with his toys a with a starry sky and the national flag in the background, children making a puzzle in the shape of a geographical map from Kosovo ...

To note that this postal rate (rather unusual) corresponds to a priority letter up to 20g sent to countries of the Zone B (countries outside Europe and the former USSR republics).
Many thanks Nicolae for the official FDC from Chișinău (MD-2012) below (print run: 300) regarding this new stamp!

This stamp features the headquarters of the United Nations in New York as well as the official logo of this 75th anniversary of the United Nations (United Nations emblem, mention "UN75", without the associated slogan "Shaping our future together" here).
The illustration on the envelope shows the emblem of the United Nations as well as an arrow in gradient of blue (this arrow is indirectly included in the logo "UN75" at the number 75).
To note that the Post of Moldova had the good idea to issue this stamp 75 years to the day after the ratification of the United Nations Charter (111 articles), on October 24, 1945 by 51 signatory countries.
This Charter of the United Nations or "Charter of San Francisco" is the treaty that defines the goals and principles of the United Nations as well as the composition, mission and powers of its executive, legislative, judicial and administrative organs.
The Republic of Moldova became a member of the UN on March 2, 1992, a few months after its declaration of independence, and has never been a non-permanent member of the Security Council to date.

"Postcrossing" stamp on FDC from Brazil

Since 2011, around thirty postal administrations have dedicated stamps to Postcrossing (Belarus, Romania, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hungary, Moldova, Ireland, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland, Czech Republic ...).
As a reminder, Postcrossing is a project created in 2005 by the Portuguese Paulo Magalhães, consisting in sending and receiving postcards (randomly) from all over the world.
To date, this website brings together almost 800,000 members from 207 different countries or territories (nearly 60 million cards received), but remains rather confidential in France with only 17,000 members (8,500 in Brazil).

On July 14, 2020, the Brazilian Post Correios put into circulation a stamp (R $ 2.45, print run: 600,000), designed by Daniel Lourenço, dedicated to this Postcrossing project, used in two copies on the cover above, with First Day cancellation from São Paulo, sent on September 24, 2020 from São Paulo (SPM = São Paulo Metropolitan). Thank you very much Marcelo!
I really love this stamp, very poetic, showing two characters (a man and a woman) exchanging postcards. To demonstrate the randomness of the practice, postcards were placed as if they were falling on either side.
The man lives in Lisbon, the capital of the country where Postcrossing was founded, and the woman in Paris, where Eiffel Tower monument is a recognizable tourist spot all over the world.
One of the postcards that appears on the stamp depicts Rio de Janeiro with Christ the Redeemer and the dotted line running through the entire stamp refers to a postcard's journey around the world.

"Year of the Ram 2015" stamp on cover from Turks and Caïcos Islands

Thank you very much Zhou for this letter from the Turks and Caicos Islands, sent on November 2, 2020 from the Providenciales Island (nicknamed "Provo" as mentioned on the postmark), in the northwestern Caicos Islands, forming with the Turks Islands this archipelago (30 islands) constituting a British overseas territory of the Caribbean, located in the southeast of the Bahamas, north-east of Cuba and north of Haiti.
Known today for its beaches and offshore financial services, this territory issued its first stamps in 1867 (profile of Queen Victoria) with mention "Turks Islands", the first stamps with mention "Turks and Caicos Islands" being issued in 1900.

Most stamps issued in recent years have as their theme the fauna, flora and the British royal family or some abusive series having absolutely no link with this archipelago ...
It seems that no stamps have been issued by the Turks and Caicos Islands Post Office since 2015, the above stamp ($ 1.20) being part of a sheetlet consisting of 6 stamps, put into circulation on November 24, 2014 to announce the New Year of the Ram (or the Goat) according to the Chinese lunar calendar.
This Year of the Ram, which began on February 19, 2015, marked then, in Asia, a period of holidays and the beginning of the spring festival.
The goat, 8th animal of the Chinese zodiac, is considered to be creative and imaginative but also hesitant or capricious ...

Sepac 2020 (Art from the State Collection) stamp on cover from Monaco

After the old residential houses in 2019, the theme chosen for the Sepac stamps in 2020 is entitled "Art from the state collection" and, if I'm not mistaken, 11 of the 13 European postal administrations (all except Gibraltar and the Vatican City) members of the Sepac association (Small European Postal Administration Cooperation) issued a Sepac stamp this year.
This is the case of Monaco with a stamp (€ 1.90) put into circulation on June 25, 2020, dedicated to a work by the painter Eva Gonzalès (1849-1883) which is part of the collections of the princely palace of Monaco.
As a reminder, the Principality of Monaco has participated in these Sepac issues since the beginning in 2007 (landscapes) and this year issued its 11th Sepac stamp.

This stamp (print run: 40,000), including the sepac logo at the bottom left and printed by Phil@poste in sheetlet of 10 stamps, was used on the letter above, sent on November 16, 2020 from Monaco (with a postmark of the OETP - "Office des Émissions de Timbres-Poste").
The work reproduced on this stamp is entitled "L'indolence" (circa 1872), by the French impressionist painter Eva Gonzalès (1849-1883), from a bourgeois family of Spanish origin and whose grandfather was from Monaco.
Along with Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzalès is one of the three women painters who participated in the beginnings of Impressionism even if she refused to participate in the Impressionist Salons.
In 1869, she entered the workshop of Édouard Manet, of which she was a student and model. She exhibited for the first time in 1870.
After a series of stamps issued by the Post of Guinea in 2009, it seems to me that Monaco, through this stamp, is the 2nd country to dedicate a stamp to Eva Gonzalès.

Protected fauna and prehistoric animals stamps on cover from Gabon

A big thank you Luc and Loick for this lovely 2nd letter from Gabon, sent on September 8, 2020 from the philatelic center in Libreville, the capital!
Gabon issued its first stamps with the mention "République gabonaise" in 1959 just before the independence of the country, after having used (from 1886) overprinted French stamps then French stamps from the colonies with the mentions "Gabon", "Congo français - Gabon" or "Afrique équatoriale française".

The 2 stamps below are part of series issued in the 2000s when Gabon was issuing plethoric sets of stamps. For example, the 500 CFA francs stamp is part of a series, issued on December 20, 2000, devoted to prehistoric creatures, made up of 2 sets of 6 stamps, 2 sheetlets of 9 stamps, 4 sheetlets of 12 stamps and 6 souvenir sheets of 1 stamp!

This stamp depicts a creature of the genus Acanthostega, one of the earliest tetrapods among the earliest vertebrates to have chiridean limbs, having lived in the Late Devonian period, around 360 million years ago.
The other stamp above (225 CFA francs) is part of a nice souvenir sheet (3 stamps), issued on June 5, 2000, devoted to animal species fully protected in Gabon, the leopard (Panthera pardus) here.
The other two stamps in this souvenir sheet are dedicated to the lion and the African fish eagle. To note that similar souvenir sheets had already been issued in 1997 and 1998.
The logo of the Forest / Environment project financed by the Government of Gabon on loan from the World Bank, appears on this stamp. This project, which began in 1993 and ended in 2002, aimed at the sustainable management of forest and wildlife resources in the country.

On 20 May 1120, Pope Callixtus II, on a visit to the city of Volterra (Tuscany), consecrated the new Cathedral, naming it after the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary ("Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta").
The sacred building was raised to the status of "Minor Basilica" in 1957 with the papal bull of Pius XII, who recognized its special ecclesial, historical and artistic importance.
Grandiose in its Romanesque style with a Latin cross plan with three naves, the Cathedral was remodeled and embellished several times over the years, particularly at the end of the 16th century, then restored after the 2nd World War.
This stamp (design and engraving: Maria Carmela Perrini) represents the facade of this cathedral with on the left the campanile dating from 1493.

"National monuments" joint stamp set with Russia, on cover from Mexico

Mexico and Russia formally established diplomatic relations on December 1, 1890 in Mexico City. After the revolution of 1917, Mexico became the first country on the American continent to establish relations with the USSR in 1924.
After the dissolution of the USSR, the 2 countries intensified their relations, economic in particular (Mexico is the 3rd commercial partner of Russia in Latin America), in the fields of defense or space.
In 1984, the USSR and Mexico had already issued a joint stamp dedicated to the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations (this was the 3rd joint issue involving the USSR).
On October 19, 2015, Russia and Mexico this time put into circulation a joint issue (2 stamps) on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the 2 countries, devoted to national monuments.
A big thank you Cecy for this nice letter franked with the Mexican version of this set, sent on October 18, 2020 from the city of Hermosillo (capital of the state of Sonora), located in northwestern Mexico!
To note that the stamps issued by the Russian Post were slightly different ...

This series (print run: 100,008 for each stamp) is featuring two national monuments of the two countries : the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg and the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City.
The Peter and Paul Fortress, built between 1703 and 1740 during the reign of Peter the Great, is the historic heart of the city of St. Petersburg.
As shown on this stamp (above to the right), this fortress is dominated by the spire of the Peter and Paul Cathedral, built from 1712 to 1733 to become the necropolis of the Russian imperial Romanov family. The dome of the Grand Ducal Burial Vault, opened in 1908, the purpose-built mausoleum of the Grand Dukes and Duchesses of Russia, is shown at right on that stamp.
Chapultepec Castle is a palace built in the 18th century on top of a hill near Mexico City, then the summer residence of the Viceroy of New Spain.
This castle became the official residence of Emperor Maximilian in 1864 and then the residence of Mexican presidents until 1935 and turned into National Museum of History from 1939.
