Vétérinaire originaire de l'île de Martinique, Raphaël Elizé (1891-1945) est rentré dans l'histoire en devenant le 1er maire noir élu dans une ville de France métropolitaine, Sablé-sur-Sarthe, en 1929.
Socialiste, Raphaël Elizé fut également un grand résistant pendant la 2nde guerre mondiale mais il sera dénoncé puis arrêté en 1943 et mourra dans le camp de concentration de Buchenwald deux ans plus tard.
Cette personnalité politique du début du 20ème siècle méritait donc à coup sûr l'émission d'un timbre à son honneur, ce qui est désormais fait avec ce nouveau timbre (0,63€, tirage : 1500000) mis en vente générale le 18 février 2013.
Veterinarian and native from the French island of Martinique (West Indies), Raphaël Elizé (1891-1945) has definitely his place in history by becoming the first black mayor elected in a city of mainland France, Sablé-sur-Sarthe, in 1929.
Socialist, Raphaël Elizé was also a member of the French resistance during the 2nd World War, but he was denounced and arrested in 1943 and died in the concentration camp of Buchenwald two years later.
This political figure of the early 20th century certainly deserved for sure the issue of a stamp in his honor, which is now done with this new stamp (€ 0.63, print run : 1,500,000) on general sale on February 18th 2013.

Ce timbre a été créé et gravé par Sarah Bougault qui a également conçu le TAD montrant Raphaël Elizé travaillant à son bureau.
A noter que la vente Premier Jour de ce timbre avait également lieu les 15 et 16 février 2013 au Lamentin (sa ville de naissance en Martinique) et à Sablé-sur-Sarthe.
Ce timbre montre un portrait d'Elizé au centre avec une partie de la façade de l'hôtel de ville de Sablé-sur-Sarthe (dont la place porte son nom) à gauche et une autre vue de cette petite ville de la Sarthe à droite avec en particulier la tour du trésor qui faisait partie de l'ancien château détruit en 1721.
La poste française avait émis un timbre consacré à cette ville de Sablé-sur-Sarthe en 1997.

That stamp was designed and engraved by Sarah Bougault who also designed the FDC cancellation showing Raphaël Elizé working at his desk.
To note that the preview sale of that stamp took also place on 15 and 16 February 2013 at Le Lamentin (his birthplace in Martinique) and Sablé-sur-Sarthe.
That stamp shows a portrait of Elizé in the middle with a part of the facade of the town hall of Sablé-sur-Sarthe (the town hall square is named after him) on the left and another view of this small town of the department of Sarthe to the right with in particular the Trésor tower that was part of the old castle destroyed in 1721.
The French Post had issued a stamp devoted to this city of Sablé-sur-Sarthe in 1997.

Je prépare un livre sur la transmission de la mémoire de la deportation par les objets philatéliques. Ce timbre est le tout dernier puisqu'il vient d' être émis. Parmi les pièces que je montre dans le livre il est le seul concernant un déporté de couleur. Ce qui ajoute au caractère exceptionnel de cette émission philatélique. MC.
