March, 2 : Memorial Day in Moldova - Postal Stationery

Each year, on March 2 specifically, the Republic of Moldova commemorates a Memorial Day ("Ziua Memoriei"), to pay tribute to the victims of the armed conflict of 1992 to restore the integrity and independence of the country.
On March 2, 1992, the civil war of Moldova, or War of Transnistria, has indeed started between Moldovan troops and those of the Transnistrian army supported by neighboring Russia and Ukraine...
Transnistria, a strip of land separated from the rest of Moldova by the Dniester River, refused a status of autonomy proposed by Chișinău, advocating an incorporation into the Russian Federation.

A cease-fire was signed between the two parties in July 1992 after a conflict having killed nearly 300 people and having made 40 missing and 3,500 soldiers wounded among Moldovan troops...
A kind of status quo remains since 1992 with a Republic of Transnistria de facto independent but unrecognized by the international community.
To commemorate the 20 years of this conflict as well as this Memorial Day, the Post of Moldova has issued, on March 2, 2012, the interesting postal stationery above.
Thank you very much Sergio for this envelope bearing the FDC cancellation from Chişinău :-)
The illustration to the left evokes the Dniester River, today still separating Transnistria from the rest of Moldova, while the stamp (L 1.20) reproduces the monument "Mother of Sorrows" by sculptor Iurii Canaşin, located in the Memorial Complex "Eternity" in Chişinău.
I've already mentioned in a previous post the other stamp above (L 0.25) belonging to a definitive set of six stamps, issued on February 15, 2011, devoted to different mansions of the country.

Sergio has also used two other stamps on the back of the envelope above, designed by Vitaliu Pogolşa and issued in 20,000 copies.
I've also already mentioned on this blog the stamp to the right, part of a set of two stamps, issued on December 26, 1992 to celebrate the country's admission to UPU (Universal Postal Union).
The other stamp (L 3.00) is part of a series of four se-tenant stamps (issued on March 31, 2001) devoted to the Corn Crake (Crex crex), a migratory bird species nesting on the ground, today endangered (maybe explaining the presence of the WWF logo on the series) because of the destruction of its habitat...
