Congrès des mathématiciens à Séoul

Congress of Mathematicians in Seoul, Korea

From 13 to 21 August 2014 will take place in Seoul, Korea the 27th International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), the largest international gathering of the community of mathematicians and the most important event in the field of pure and applied mathematics.
It is during this Congress organized under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), held every four years, that some prestigious awards are presented such as the Fields Medal (often considered the Nobel Prize of Mathematics), the Nevanlinna Prize, the Gauss Prize or the Chern Medal.

To evoke the organization of this Congress, the Korea Post has released on July 15, 2014, a series of three special stamps (print run : 334.000 each) designed by Shin Jaeyong.
These three stamps have been issued in a same sheet composed of 15 stamps (5 of each) and 3 labels.
These stamps are devoted to some of the most important mathematical theorems of history, such as Pascal's triangle, a triangular array of the binomial coefficients, on the stamp (540 won) above.
Thank you very much Ji-Ho for these three FDCs with postmarks of July 17, 2014 from Busan, about this whole stamp set :-)
To note that this triangle was however already known before in Far East and Middle East but it's the French Blaise Pascal who published a treaty ("Treatise on Arithmetical Triangle") in 1654, demonstrating 19 of its properties.

This is probably the most famous mathematical theorem that is featured on the second stamp (300 won) above, the Pythagorean theorem, relating the lengths of the sides in a right triangle (the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides).
To note the presence of this International Congress's logo in the top margin and the three vignettes of this sheet, as well as on the FDC cancellation.
This logo includes two golden spirals growing at the rate of golden ratio. It symbolizes both the letter "S" (referring to Seoul) but also the taegeuk (harmony of yin and yang) of the Korean flag.

The last stamp (300 won) of this series above is devoted to the Euler's theorem (1736) giving necessary and sufficient conditions of a graph having an Eulerian tour...
Euler (1707-1783), a Swiss mathematician and physicist who made important discoveries in different fields such as infinitesimal calculus and graph theory, is considered as one of the greatest and most prolific mathematicians of all time.
Finally, to note that some parts of these stamps were printed with a special varnish.
