Série EUROPA 2014 du Vatican

EUROPA 2014 stamp set from Vatican City

If I'm not wrong, the Vatican Post is the only European postal administration having chosen pipe organs to illustrate its EUROPA 2014 stamp series whose theme this year is the "national musical instruments".
It is true that we easily associate this monumental instrument to churches and cathedrals, whose importance was stressed during the work of the Second Vatican Council.
This Council indeed recalled that pipe organ was the most appropriate musical instrument for sacred use by providing "a remarkable splendor to liturgical ceremonies" and by allowing to "powerfully lifts up man's mind to God and to heavenly things"...
A big thank you Matteo for this beautiful cover sent from the Vatican City on August 15, 2014, franked with the two stamps constituting that EUROPA 2014 set :-)

Issued on May 20, 2014, this series (print run : 150,000) respectively features the Biagi organ located in the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome (€ 0.70) and another one located in Saint Peter's Basilica (€ 0.85).
The first organ, made by Luca Biagi (1548-1608) is a masterpiece of art and technique, with wooden carved and painted decorations by Giovan Battista Montano.
It consists of three sections, separated by twisted columns, each surmounted by a statue : the Archangel Gabriel, God the Father and the Virgin.
The other organ, more recent (built by the Tamburini company in 1974), is located in the Choir Chapel on the left side of the nave in St. Peter's Basilica. It is used for all the solemn ceremonies of this basilica, particularly those celebrated by Pope Francis.
To note also the nice special hand cancellation dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, celebrated each year on August 15th by Catholics. The Assumption is the event in which the Virgin Mary would be entered directly into heavenly glory, at the end of her earthly life...
