"Lieutenant and Lieutenant ad interim 2022" stamps on cover from the Order of Malta (SMOM)

Timbres "Lieutenant et lieutenant ad interim 2022" sur lettre de l'Ordre de Malte (OSMM)

Suite au décès du 80ème grand maître de l'Ordre Souverain Militaire de Malte (OSMM), Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto, en 2020 puis du décès du Lieutenant du grand maître, Marco Luzzago, en 2022, qui dirigeait l'Ordre jusqu'à l'élection du 81ème grand maître, le scientifique portugais Ruy Gonçalo do Valle Peixoto de Villas Boas (né en 1939) a été désigné Lieutenant ad interim le 7 juin 2022.
L'avocat canadien Fra' John Timothy Dunlap (né en 1957), membre du Souverain Conseil a été nommé Lieutenant du grand maître le 13 juin 2022 par le pape François puis a prêté serment le 14 juin 2022 dans l'église Santa Maria in Aventino. 
Following the death of the 80th Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM), Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto, in 2020 and then the death of the Lieutenant of the Grand Master, Marco Luzzago, in 2022, who led the Order until the election of the 81st Grand Master, the Portuguese scientist Ruy Gonçalo do Valle Peixoto de Villas Boas (born in 1939) was appointed Lieutenant ad interim on June 7, 2022.
The Canadian lawyer Fra' John Timothy Dunlap (born in 1957), member of the Sovereign Council, was appointed Lieutenant of the Grand Master on June 13, 2022 by Pope Francis and was sworn in on June 14, 2022 in the Church of Santa Maria in Aventino. 

Le 16 septembre 2022, l'administration postal de l'OSMM à Rome a mis en circulation 2 timbres (1,20€, tirage : 5000), imprimés en France par Cartor en feuillets de 9 timbres chacun, consacrés respectivement à la nomination de Ruy Gonçalo do Valle Peixoto de Villas Boas comme Lieutenant ad interim et à celle de Fra' John Timothy Dunlap comme Lieutenant du grand maître.
Ces 2 timbres ont été utilisés sur la lettre ci-dessus avec TAD du 7 novembre 2024 (avec, comme de coutume, la mention "Poste Magistrali").
Les armoiries de l'Ordre de Malte figurent sur le timbre à droite, celles de Fra' John Timothy Dunlap étant reproduites sur l'autre timbre (croix blanche sur fond rouge du drapeau d'état et blason de la famille Dunlap).
Le 3 mai 2023, Fra' John Timothy Dunlap a été élu 81ème grand maître de l'OSMM, une élection rendue possible par les révisions apportées en 2022 par le pape François à la constitution de l'Ordre, qui ont supprimé l'exigence traditionnelle pour le grand maître de prouver une ascendance noble.
On September 16, 2022, the SMOM postal administration in Rome put into circulation two stamps (€1.20, print run: 5,000), printed in France by Cartor in sheets of 9 stamps each, dedicated respectively to the appointment of Ruy Gonçalo do Valle Peixoto de Villas Boas as Lieutenant ad interim and that of Fra' John Timothy Dunlap as Lieutenant of the Grand Master.
These two stamps were used on the cover above with postmarks of November 7, 2024 (with, as usual, the mention "Poste Magistrali").
The coat of arms of the Order of Malta appears on the stamp on the right, those of Fra' John Timothy Dunlap being reproduced on the other stamp (white cross on red background of the state flag and coat of arms of the Dunlap family).
On May 3, 2023, Fra' John Timothy Dunlap was elected the 81st Grand Master of the SMOM, an election made possible by Pope Francis' 2022 revisions to the Order's constitution, which removed the traditional requirement for the Grand Master to prove noble ancestry.
