Stamp design and music in Czech Republic

Merci beaucoup Bret :-)
On January 20, 2015, the Czech Post issued two new stamps respectively devoted to the 75th anniversary of the birth of stamp designer Oldřich Kulhánek (13 CZK) and the 75th anniversary of the death of the composer and conductor Vítězslava Kaprálová (17 CZK).
I've already mentioned on this blog the work of Oldřich Kulhánek through a commemorative sheet issued by the Czech Post on February 26, 2013 (referring to his birthday in 1940), nearly a month after his death in Prague (on January 28, 2013).
These two new stamps were used in 2 copies on the nice cover below sent by registered mail from Prague on the first day of issue. Thank you very much Bret :-)

I also already widely mentioned on this blog the round stamp above to the left, issued on November 26, 2014, dedicated to Jára Cimrman, Czech imaginary heroes who would have, among other many things, invented the round stamp...
The stamp dedicated to Oldřich Kulhánek (design : Jan Kavan, engraving : Miloš Ondráček) shows his portrait to the right as well as various portraits appearing on Czech stamps designed by Kulhánek : Petr Vok of Rožmberk, Kaspar Maria von Sternberg, Premysl Otakar II, Otto Wichterle and King Jirí of Podebrady (from left to right).

Bret also sent me the official FDC above about the same stamp devoted to Oldřich Kulhánek, depicted in profile with a laurel wreath on his head, on the First Day cancellation from Prague.
On the engraving to the left are featured different designs characteristic of his style and in particular his meticulous work on hand's drawing.
Oldřich Kulhánek did not design only stamps but was also a complete graphic artist and was also the author of banknotes and numerous works of art.

This stamp was issued in sheets of 30 stamps as well as in the booklet above (print run : 20,000), composed of 8 stamps and 4 coupons.
This coupon includes the mention "Theatrum Mundi", meaning "theater" or "rules of the world" in Latin, used by the theorist Eva Petrova to qualify the metaphorical description of Kulhánek of the condition of today's world...

The illustration of that same coupon appears on the left on the cover of this booklet above, next to a biography of Oldřich Kulhánek.
We again find his work around hand's representation on this coupon as well as two portraits : a distorted picture of Stalin dating from 1968 and a motif from his sarcastic lithographic "Funny Money" series.
Kulhánek was arrested in 1971 and detained and placed under surveillance by the state police who accused him of defamatory drawings toward communist leaders...
He was allowed to publish again his works only after the regime fell in 1989.
The mention to the right on this cover reminds that this stamp is part of the series dedicated to the tradition of Czech stamp design.

Bret also sent me the FDC above (with postmark from Brno) regarding the other stamp issued on January 20, 2015, dedicated to the composer and conductor Vítězslava Kaprálová (1915-1940).
Despite a very short life (she died of tuberculosis at 25 in France), Kaprálová, born in Brno, is the author of nearly 40 compositions (concerto for piano and orchestra, Military Sinfonietta...), mostly for piano and conducted orchestras in Prague and other European cities (including London), a rarity for a woman in the early 20th century.
I really love the graphic style of that stamp, designed by Marina Richterová, the author of other Czech stamps issued recently (Mozart, Kafka...) but also a stamp issued in the Vatican City last year (Shakespeare).
The symbol of the bindweed flower (present on the stamp and engraving on the envelope) recalls the commitment of Vítězslava Kaprálová to her husband, the Czech author Jiří Mucha, or her friendship with Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů.

As usual, Bret has also been kind enough to send me the two First Day sheets above and below regarding these two stamps :-)
