3 Princes Moldaves

3 Moldavian Princes

The History of Moldavia is very complex. The Republic of Moldova(RM), independent since 1991, is indeed only a part of the great region of Moldavia, another part of which is today in Rumania. This Rumanian region bears moreover always the name of Moldavia also... This separation thus has nothing natural, the 2 parts having the same roots, but is the result of successive wars with the Russians who seize the current RM for the 1st time in 1812. She will be joined then briefly to Rumania in 1918 before being again annexed by the USSR a little later....

Thus before 1812, Princes of Valachie and of Moldavia reign over this territory. The most known being Etienne le Grand about whom I have already spoken in a previous message. Moldavia emits regularly stamps in honour of these various princes, as this series of 1999, among which 3 princes appear on this postcard :

One finds there in the chronological order:
  • Bogdan II Musat, on green background, Prince of Moldavia from 1449 to 1451. One does not know large thing of him. He is the father of the famous voïvode Etienne the Great (Ştefan III cel Mare).
  • Bogdan IV Lapusneanu, on red background, Prince of Moldavia from 1568 to 1572. Born in 1555, he is proclaimed Prince in 1568 when his father Alexandru IV Lapusneanu abdicates. He reigns then under the regency of his mother until her death in 1570. He then only reigns but, weak and inexperienced, he is reversed in 1572 by Ioan II Voda, invested by the Turks. It thinks then that, after having joined Moscow, the tsar Ivan the Terrible, showing it of heresy, made sew him in a bag before throwing it to water in 1575…
  • Simion I Movila, on maroon background, Prince of Valachie from 1600 to 1602 then of Moldavia from 1606 to 1607. He is imposed Prince de Valachie by the Poles then driven out by his predecessor Mihai Viteazul. He will become then Prince of Moldavia in 1606 when his brother Ieremia Movila died.
To note that 3 other values and 1 Miniature-sheet were also emited on this October 16th, 1999. From left to right: Constantin Cantemir, George III Duka and Ilias Alexandru :

As for the M/S, it represents Alexandru Lapusneanu, the father of Bogdan IV above:

The "first day of issue" postmark depicts the emblem of the Princes of Moldavia. We find moreover this emblem on the coat of arms of the Republic of current Moldavia.

This coat of arms consists of a shield divided horizontally into two parts: the upper part is red, and the lower part is blue with a superimposed auroch's head showing between its horns an eight-pointed star. On its right the auroch's head is flanked by a five-petalled rose, and on its left by a slightly rotated crescent. All heraldic elements present on the shield are of golden (yellow) colour. The shield is laid on the breast of a natural eagle holding in its beak a golden cross, in its right claw a green olive-tree branch and in its left claw a golden sceptre.
