Hommage à Alexei Mateevici en Moldavie

Tribute to Alexei Mateevici in Moldova

On August 28, 2013, the Post of Moldova has issued an interesting souvenir sheet dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of the poet, writer, activist, teacher and theologian Alexei Mateevici (1888-1917).
Alexei Mateevici is considered as one of the greatest poets of Bessarabia with many works like Ţăranii ("Peasants"), Eu cânt ("I sing") or Ţara ("The Country") as well as articles published about religion or Moldovan folklore.
The preview sale of this sheet (print run : 50,000) took place in the village of Zaim (Căuşeni district, south-east of the country) where his family moved from 1893. Mateevici's family is shown on this photograph dating from 1902 (to the left on the official FDC below) in front of their house in Zaim, that is today a Museum.

Thank you very much Sergio for this nice FDC designed by Elena Karachentseva (also the author of this sheet) published at only 300 copies :-)
That stamp (L 5.75) included on this souvenir sheet shows a portrait of Alexei Mateevici while the attached coupon evokes the romantic poem "Limba noastră" ("Our Language") wrote a month before his death.
Five of the twelve stanzas of this poem were chosen to become the national anthem of Moldova in 1994 (music composed by Alexandru Cristea).
To note that the Moldovan Post has already issued several stamps (1998) or postal stationeries (two in 2008) devoted to Alexei Mateevici.
His bust is part of the famous "Alley of Classics" (28 busts devoted to Moldovan political leaders or literary figures), a sculptural complex located in the Stephen the Great Park in central Chişinău.
