Les Illyriens sont un ensemble de tribus parlant des langues indo-européennes établies durant l'Antiquité sur les côtes nord et est de l'Adriatique, incluant le territoire actuel du Kosovo.
On September 14, 2023, the Kosovo Post (Posta e Kosovës) put into circulation an interesting series (4 stamps: €0.40, €0.60, €0.80, €0.90) illustrating different types of Illyrian fibulae, part I suppose of the collections of the National Museum of Kosovo in Pristina.
Created by four different designers, these four stamps (print run: 5,000), printed in the same sheetlet composed of 8 stamps (2 of each), have been used on the pretty cover below sent on November 15, 2023 from the city of Prizren, located in the south of the country. Thank you very much Sabri!
Illyrians are a group of tribes speaking Indo-European languages established during Antiquity on the northern and eastern coasts of the Adriatic, including the current territory of Kosovo.
La plupart des fibules découvertes au Kosovo l'ont été sur les sites archéologiques de Llashticë, Banja e Pejës et du tumulus de Shiroka (par exemple la fibule illustrée sur le timbre à 0,40€).
Fibulae, brooches usually made of metal, which were used to secure the ends of a garment, were widely used by the Illyrians. Certain types of fibulae were one of the few items used by all Illyrians and some were even used to declare the distribution of Illyrian people.
Illyrians loved ornaments, and on festive occasions their women appeared heavily draped in all manner of jewelry. Several varieties of fibulae have a distinctive evolution in Illyria, notably the brooch consisting of two concentrically wound spirals attached to the pin. This type of fibula is depicted on the €0.90 stamp.
Most of the fibulae discovered in Kosovo come from the archaeological sites of Llashticë, Banja e Pejës and the Shiroka burial mounds (for example the fibula illustrated on the €0.40 stamp).
