Centenaire de la LPO en France - Plis Premier Jour

Protection of Birds in France - Special FDCs

Merci beaucoup Roland :-)
100 years ago, the League for the Protection of Birds ("Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux" or "LPO" in French) was founded to prevent the announced extinction in Brittany of a bird species in particular, the Atlantic Puffin, due to a heavy poaching.
This species, which has not disappeared even if it is still threatened today, has become the emblem of the LPO, the equivalent of the Panda for the WWF somehow...
Therefore logical to find an Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) on one of the four stamps issued by the French Post (general sale on May 14, 2012) in a miniature sheet devoted to the 100th anniversary of the LPO !
This sheet (print run : 2,000,000) appears on the beautiful First Day Cover from Paris ("Carré d'Encre") below, dated May 12, 2012. Thank you very much Roland :-)

The First Day postmark above, designed by Sarah Bougault, was offered to the public only in Paris. It features a head of Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), a threatened bird of prey (very rare in France and Europe) also depicted on one of the stamps of this set.
To note the signature of Noëlle Le Guillouzic, the designer of this series, in the upper margin of the sheet above, its layout being due to Valérie Besser.
To note also that these four stamps are the first commemorative stamps (except stamps issued in booklets) issued in France with the postage rate of the Green Letter (first step), i.e. € 0.57 currently.
The two other species in this series are the Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica) and the Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax), two birds especially threatened because of their habitat's destruction and intensive agriculture.
Just one regret : the absence of the Latin names of the species of birds depicted on these stamps...

The LPO has now a network distributed throughout the French territory (nearly 10,000 shelters devoted to endangered species), with its 5,000 volunteers and 45,000 members who support the organization's chief missions : protection and preservation of species but also education, awareness, and protection of biodiversity in general.
This probably explains the fact that the preview sale of this series took also place in more than 20 other French cities, including Vannes (see the cover above) and Clermont-Ferrand (the cover below) !
The four stamps of this sheet indeed appear on the First Day Cover from Vannes (Department of Morbihan) above with a different postmark (designed by Aurélie Baras), depicting the logo of the LPO. Thank you very much François :-)

The Natural History Museum Henri-Lecoq in Clermont-Ferrand (Department of Puy-de-Dôme) therefore also hosted this preview sale, with the same FDC cancellation as in the other twenty cities in France.
Thank you very much Jean-Claude for this First Day souvenir above from Clermont-Ferrand, franked with the "Osprey" stamp :-)

Jean-Claude was kind enough to also send me the nice maxicard above, specially edited by the LPO and the Philatelic Association "PhilaPostel" in the region of Auvergne.
Jean-Claude has used the self-adhesive version of the "Atlantic Puffin" stamp, the only one of this series having also been issued this way (only available in full sheet of 42 stamps...).
