International Day of Human Space Flight is celebrated annually on April 12, commemorating Yuri Gagarin's first human space flight.
It was proclaimed during the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2011, just days before the 50th anniversary of that historic flight.
On April 12, 2026, India Post issued two souvenir sheets on this theme—specifically dedicated to India's human space program—celebrating the country's transition from a mere participant to a leader in space technology and exploration.
A portion of one of these two souvenir sheets (20 INR; print run: 110,000; design: Sh. Suresh Kumar) was used on the cover below, sent on July 29, 2026, from Margao (Goa). Many thanks, Elton!
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), a major component of the Indian government's Department of Space (DoS), has been working for over 50 years to advance space technologies for national development and international cooperation.
ISRO has developed reliable launch vehicles such as the PSLV, GSLV, LVM-3, and SSLV, while also designing—in partnership with academia and industry—satellites for telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorology, navigation, disaster management, and resource monitoring.
India also reached a historic milestone when Shubhanshu Shukla became the first Indian astronaut to join the International Space Station as part of the Axiom-04 mission (June 25 – July 15, 2025).
The stamp in this souvenir sheet illustrates India's advancing space capabilities against Earth, symbolizing a unified future vision. At its center, the Gaganyaan crew module reflects India's human spaceflight capabilities, while the Bharatiya Antariksh Station signifies India's transition into an elite, indigenous space-faring power, aiming to establish a functional, modular space station in Low Earth Orbit by 2035.
The Chandrayaan-3 lander and rover highlight successful lunar exploration. Complementing these is the Human Rated Launch Vehicle (HRLV), designed to carry 2–3 astronauts to 300–400 km orbit.
Additionally, Elton used two se-tenant stamps (5 INR; print run: 306,300; designed by Ms. Kanika)—issued on November 24, 2025—commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, located in the northeastern part of the country.
As the first institute of its kind in India, it was established on the historic site of the Hijli detention camp (shown on the stamp on the right) and has since evolved into a center of excellence for engineering, technology, research, and innovation.
In 2019, the Indian government granted IIT Kharagpur the status of Institute of Eminence, in recognition of its major contribution to academia and industry. Today, the campus spans over 890 hectares and is home to a vibrant community comprising more than 17,000 students, over 770 faculty members, and approximately 930 staff members. The institute includes 21 academic departments, 11 schools, and 25 centers.
